Edmond was so excited that they were going through the Bluestone Mountains today! There had been rumors to be a phoenix sighting on the tallest peak of these mountains and so his mother had started to wander towards the mountains in hopes of finding out the truth of these statements.

Edmond still wasn't quite sure how this hunting business worked. He suspected it was different from his stalking lessons on how to hunt ground prey like rabbits or deer. As a result, today, much like any other day, Edmond pranced around his mother's paws and pestered her with questions.

"What's it mean to hunt monsters? Is it like hunting rabbits? Are we gonna eat the phoenix when we catch it?" He asked and then took pause. "What's a phoenix look like, anyway?" He wondered and then went on. "Do you think it'll be as smart as our other prey?" This caused him to quiet for another moment. Sometimes when they went hunting and they caught something, it would scream in pain if they didn't kill it right away. Edmond hated those sounds. "It... we won't hurt the phoenix, right?" He asked his mother, before his gaze turned to Thyra.

"Keep up, slow poke!" He called to his sister. "You don't wanna get left behind and then have the phoenix swoop in and eat you up when we're not here to save you!" He wagged his tail and grinned at her. "I'm gonna be the best monster hunter. We both are! We're gonna travel everywhere and see every monster ever! It'll be so much fun!" He yipped, making quite the racket in their journeys.

Thyra sighed and rolled her eyes at her brother. She was back next to her mother, who was trailing just behind the bouncy boy-pup, and Thyra was trying her best to walk proudly and gracefully. In reality she looked a bit silly, with her giant puppy paws and small frame, but she thought she looked majestic and that was all that mattered in her mind. Her mother smirked at the two of them, polar opposites but both so dear to her heart. One day Thyra’s puppy awkwardness would fade and she truly would be as graceful as she imagined herself, but today was not that day.

"I don’t want to be a monster hunter, Edmond. You know that already," Thyra said in exasperation. It was true that her hunting skills were improving every day, but she had no interest in using those skills to find some creatures that were just trying to survive like all the other creatures - her family included. Thyra always spoke up at every opportunity about not doing what her mother does when she grows up, and she knew Amber understood and accepted her future choice. She definitely enjoyed getting to see so much of the lands they lived in, and how different all the areas were from one another, but she was already tired of wandering and she knew deep down that she would be ready to find a pack sooner than later and make a home for herself. She even daydreamed herself as one day being the most renowned hunter of her pack, teaching new pack pups how to be as good as she was at finding food for everyone. But that was a long way off, and she knew she would have to practice a bunch to be the best - and her mother was still a great resource for what she wanted to learn. “And I’m not going to get eaten by a phoenix! Mom’s right here,” she retorted. [Thyra: 325 words]

Amber patiently waited for her son to finish his stream of questions, chuckling softly as he kept talking, needling his sister in the process. His pure, unbridled excitement was often bubbling over and she did her best to accept it with grace and patience. She waited until his yips had faded before she replied. “Okay, come over here and we’ll talk about all of that,” Amber said with a soft smile. She stopped walking and waited for him to bound over. “Hunting monsters is not like hunting rabbits. Rabbits are small and they taste good and we hunt them to eat. Monsters are big and they can be dangerous so as we get closer I need you to stay close and quiet. We never know what we might be walking into so we have to sneak up on it just like rabbits, only stay hidden.” She thought for a moment, not exactly sure how to broach the subject of hurting monsters. “Sometimes we do hunt the monsters the same as rabbits to kill them. But sometimes we don’t. It really depends on the creature and what Kale Greenleaf has asked me to do,” Amber said. “Today we aren’t hurting anything, I just need to find some feathers or broken talons and retrieve them. So if we stay quiet we can collect the items and get away safely, okay?” She watched Edmond, such a sweet and kind-hearted pup, doing her best to let him decide if he truly wanted to hunt monsters or not despite her presumption that he would never be able to stomach the job.
