"They need a few extra hands to help with the Feeding Pen - there fence needs some repairing and the wherries keep either escaping or going for hands working on it. It's a good excuse to bribe them with food to keep the beasts from getting too curious - or too free." Several had already either been chased back IN to the pen...or snatched up by excited, hungry dragons.
Which was what they were for, but wherries were still wild animals and not everybody was eager to herd them...or find them in odd places.

Chakuri was brimming with excitement at the unusual task they were given, eager to assist. But wherries... They were still very strong animals, and she had little interest in getting bit or kicked by the powerful beasts. "Okay! I think food is probably our best option... You know, keep them distracted, so they don't try and bite our fingers while we're working!"
She... didn't know if a wherry could bite a finger off, but she really wasn't willing to find out.

Heleste, who had been getting ready to move, turned to Chakuri in horror. “They can do that?!” She exclaimed. Suddenly this task sounded a lot less fun. It had been an interesting assignment that sounded like a fun game. Now it sounded more like a tussle with tunnelsnakes. “Wouldn’t the food just encourage them to bite? Maybe if throw the food they will follow?”

"I've heard people complaining about getting nipped before..." Chakuri confessed, some of her enthusiasm diminishing as she considered the task. "Oh! That's a great idea. Then they'll be distracted, and we can fix the fence before they finish! I can go grab the stuff for the fence, if you want to go to the kitchens! Then we can meet in front of the pen!"
