After her tumble, Palouseth takes a brief moment longer to take a stock in herself, just as Tuela made routine every night. She flexes claws, limbs, and even flares her wings out before giving them a few flaps. All good to go, love. Only a bit sore.

The relief from Tuelarua was palpable. ’I’m so glad, darling. You’re doing so well. Try again when you’re ready?’

Though there was the slightest edge of apprehension, Palouseth only gave a soft hum of agreement. She needed to practice flying, to do her best so they would eventually become senior weyrlings -- to fly, to flame. To fight for their home, to take her beloved rider to see new sights. Its enough of a bolster to get her running once more, wings flapping hard, and...

Quote:
You start off strong, but then a gust of wind throws you off your game.

The wind seems on her side! The strong gust helps to lift her up into the air, helping her to soar high - higher -- and higher….

Too high.

There's a brief moment of panic, before the calm tidal wave of Tuela's love calms the storm. Okay, she can fix this. With a hard flap of her wings, she straightens the sails out and turns -- faster and sharper than she had been going for! -- before heading back to the group. Amongst the riders, she can see her own Tuela standing there. So far away, so far down. Yet Palouseth can turn this around, make a decent landing as she rapidly approaches her starting area...

Quote:
Nothing seems to stop the wind, and you are now well on your way toward the lake. Splash!

It sails on by her--or rather, she sails right on by as the gust of wind wont allow her to disembark. Struggling to turn around once more, the breeze finally lightens up, though she isn't able to get any sort of control before hurtling into the cold Weyrlake. Palouseth rises, spitting out a mouthful of water and paddling towards shore.

At least water could be somewhat softer than unforgiving land.

[Take Two!]

After La'hisen had soothed his dragon's pride and made certain that he hadn't done anything more than have a rough tumble, Othelloth was ready for his second attempt. His other siblings were having varying amounts of success themselves, from what he could see! It was to be expected. The young man gave the blue a firm pat on the shoulder before withdrawing, and the sleek dragon wiggled a moment before attempting to launch himself into the sky once more.

Quote:
11-15: Psh, this flying thing is smooth sailing! You don't know what all the fuss is about. Except, now that you're here it occurs to you that you don't know how to land. Roll a d4 to see how you do!

With the wind beneath his wings, Othelloth was much more in control of his flying during this attempt! He did not bugle his triumph, but it radiated from his entire being. He could feel La'hisen's own pleasure at seeing him fly with such grace. Really, it was to be expected!

Except, the young dragon wasn't exactly sure how to get back to the ground. His first attempt had been a disaster, putting it mildly, and he had no desire to repeat such a humiliating moment.

Quote:
Nobody said this was going to be easy, but somehow you didn't realize it would be this hard either. Try though you might, you can't quite pull of the smooth landing you've seen all the adults do. But at least you managed to land.

The ground came up much faster than he'd expected, and Othelloth could feel his muscles complain as he tried to slow himself down to an appropriate speed. Somehow, the adults managed to backwing just right and land just so...

He grunted a little at the impact as he hit the ground harder than he'd have liked, awkwardly hopping to keep his balance. Well. Certainly not dignified whatsoever, but he hadn't fallen....

[Take Three!]

He was impatient to go again, but stretched his wings out first to give them a good flap or two. He might be sore later on, but nothing was overly strained. La'hisen thoroughly checked his dragon over before he stepped back once more, satisfied.

Quote:
6-10: It's difficult to get off of the ground to begin with. This requires a lot more muscle strength than you were prepared for, and by the time you're airborne, you are already pretty tired. Roll a d4 to see what happens next.

Othelloth beat mightily to try and gain that effortless sensation of flight once more... and realized just how tired he was. He strained, forcing his aching wings to take him up, up! Surely he could overcome this!

Quote:
Nope, this was a bad idea, and you skid gracelessly along the ground into a heap. Shards.

His tired muscles disagreed with his determination, and after wobbling pathetically in the air, Othelloth felt himself fall. He hadn't managed to get high up at all, and skidded across the ground in disgrace. It was appalling. How could he have failed so miserably? He'd practiced hard with flapping, and...

La'hisen approached his red-eyed blue, wordlessly taking his head into his hands so he could rub at his eye ridges with calloused thumbs. "You did really well for your first time flying." He said pointedly, able to feel Othelloth's disappointment and frustration with himself. "It just means we know what to work on. I'll give you a good scrub after everyone else is finished, alright?"

Still seething a little, the blue pressed his face against his rider's torso with the tiniest sigh. Yes. He said grudgingly. I would like that. No need to continue to wear the stains of his defeat.

Honestly, Brenva had been working hard to make sure her....now not-so-little Green was up to the task. First flight was a big deal, and the Rider was confident in her other half's abilities. Curious and stubborn as she was, Skalmath had INSISTED on doing things herself, on top of letting Brenva help her. Exercises, small practices, all leading up to this moment. The Rider had managed to get her wild curls tamed back in to a braid, and her gray eyes didn't leave Skal's whirling blue as the tiny one listened to the instructions. Don't go far...Ha! If Skalmath had her way, she'd be exploring EVERYWHERE the second her wings could reliably carry her.

Nonetheless, Brenva's will was pressed against her dragon's, watching, Just be careful, and don't
Don't lecture me, Mine! I can do this! Her eagerness and confidence got a groan from Brenva, who watched as Skalmath darted ahead and used speed and really hard wing-work to lift herself in to the air. She could feel how tired Skalmath was already, but her dragonet's stubbornness had her in the air for a few minutes at least, carrying her with a trumpet of glee until, "SHARDS, Skal watch out!"

And there went the weyrling. She watched her dragonet tumble to the ground, and felt the claw break, wincing. Moving towards her, she cupped the green head in her hands, "I told you tto be careful and less cocky. THis is hard work." I KNOW that, but I wanted to fly.
"You used your wings too much and were exhausted by the time you got off the ground..."

Indarrath and R’uun waited. Patience was one of their specialties. It was totally not because R’uun was fighting a wave of panic, attempting to block horrifying images of his beautiful green spearing herself on some errant tree or flying into a rock or…

Indarrath was his rock, though. She was serene in the face of his worry, soothing it away by pressing herself closer to him. Her proximity was reminiscent of her touch during that fateful Touching, and the Hatching that had come soon after… she had been there, he realised- a guardian and a protector when he needed it. Now it was his turn to be confident for her, to believe in her.

You can do it, Indy. I believe in you. You have the strength and willpower to do this.

Thank you, my R’uun. She crooned as she whuffed warm air about his curly locks, a low and quiet sound meant only for him and their closest neighbours.

As their turn arrived, R’uun’s palms turned sweaty and he dug his nails into the softness of his skin. Just as he had watched Nyara and Mic, now he was watching Indarrath… soon enough, they would fly together, but for now, it was essential she master the basics unencumbered.

She pushed off the ground with strong wingflaps, large muscles bunching and obeying her commands. Wow. He whispered to her, awed as she seemed to take off without a struggle.

1 - 5: You start off strong, but then a gust of wind throws you off your game. Roll a d4 to see whether you're able to correct your trajectory:

A strong gust of wind seemed to knock her off-balance, and he paled as he watched her falter. Come on, Indarrath. You can do it! Just glide until you find the right thermals, and use your strength to keep your body from being pushed downwards. He urged, wishing he could be there to fly right beside her.

R’uunMine... Fear crept into her voice, her eyes tinged with yellow and grey. Disoriented, Indarrath fell back on instinct. She leaned into the training she and R’uun had learnt over the months, maneuvering with the currents.

3
The wind blows you well off course, but you use your tail to turn around, heading back toward the group.

But how to head back? With a questioning flick of her tail, she began a slow curve back to the group, rallying herself to land near them without hurting any of them. If she was careful, and conscientious, and slow enough… She backwinged gently, barely scraping the ground as she settled next to R’uun.

“Well done Indarrath!” He breathed in relief, wrapping his arms around her neck. “You did so well!”
