Anxious Spirit

Dragging the three foot talon halfway across Kells was...not ideal. Ashen Snow had been tested: in strength of mind as well as of the body. The weight of the thing pressed down on him in all areas, it’s implications the worst of all. There truly were mythical beasts in the land. Part of him was excited—who wouldn’t be, knowing even more magic existed?—but mostly he was terrified. He dreamed of deep, dark, watery depths, of drowning and being pulled under to find a featherless, fleshy bird with countless boneless limbs and a beak bigger than his body. He dreamed of the largest vulture possible, its ring of hair stiffened with time and blood, its talons grasping and digging troughs through the land as it grabbed him and pulled him beyond the heavens. Many times, Ash woke up with a start and stared at his surroundings, unnerved at how normal it seemed in comparison.

When he returned to Kale Greenleaf, he would be given even more nightmare fodder.

Oh, why had he done this alone again? Ashen Snow gave an anxious smile at the praise, but it was all starting to get to him. He was going to have to tell the pack, right? But would they believe him? The berserker kept taking his evidence away, after all...Did Greenleaf have any other hunters? He wanted to ask that and more, but the monster hunter of Kells already had his last mission in mind, and so he dutifully listened.

This time, he was to head south towards the deserts. Brr. Ash found the very idea detestable—his fur was thick enough to make him sweat some days even in winter. Spring edging towards summer in the desert heat? Spirits, this was going to suck. And that wasn’t even getting into trying to find something that apparently could LOOK AT YOU AND TURN YOU TO STONE? HELLO?! The kraken and roc were one thing: huge and powerful but still a beast. But the basilisk seemed to be something else, something more: venomous as well as magical...

He gulped the hardest he could remember doing in his short adult life before turning to the southern peninsula.

The desert was as bad as he thought and more. Sand whipped up into his face at a strong wind, and things crawled and slithered there that made him want to turn around and reconsider. Evidence of magical things was one thing, but that didn't stop very mundane and very dangerous animals from existing. Ash saw scorpions, snakes, vultures, and the occasional pony who would snort at him before trotting away to its herd. He licked his lips but knew better than to pursue. The faster he got this done, the faster he could get back to the cold and sane places of Kells.

But it wasn't a shed skin or spines that Ashen Snow found on this journey. Rather, he came across what he thought was a curious cropping of gems jutting out from the hard, dead soil. Upon closer inspection, however, he found that this wasn't as shiny as the gems he had seen on fellow pack members. A brush of his nose saw flakes of the emerald something-or-other flake off, and he blew it off nervously in case it was poisonous. Weird...This didn't look like it could belong to any snake he could think of, unless snakes could suddenly grow horns. Or else this was the tip of its tail for some reason.

It wasn't exactly what he thought Greenleaf had described, but Ash was ready to leave the desert for any reason, and this find was curious enough to call it for him. Carefully he picked the horn (?) up from the ground, feeling how it brittle it truly was between his teeth. He'd have to keep a smooth gait to get it back in one piece...

Object List: 2. Four dull blue/green reptilian spines severed from their source. Each spine is about a foot long, three inches thick, the ridges are covered in sharp needle-like points, and it has dried substantially in the sun. You’ll need to get creative to carry these back.

x x x Fester opened up one eye as he was still laying on the ground. That sleep seemed to have flown by as he opened up his other eye and got up to stretch and yawn at the same time. He flicked his hind leg one at a time to stretch them out too. His limbs felt well rested enough just to do some more running today.
Again, Kale's most recent conversation lingered in his mind... The young wolf thought about his dad, Venom, and his favourite brother, Taint, and wondered if he was doing the right thing up until now. He knew that it would be a sad adventure if he ended up dying without seeing them again. And his mother, Sparks, the one that taught him how to sneak up to other wolves without much sounds made. Ahh he was starting to get the ache and become a little family sick. He made a tiny vow within himself that he will need to find them once more. To be around them again and exchange their newly found skills and even play with them again...

Although the stranger hunter seemed to have had shown him a glimmer of trust, evne for a quick moment, Fester knew not to let his guard down. If Kale strikes, or even attempts to ambust him, he will fight back and won't stop until he gets to dominate the other wolf and even kill if he had no choices left but to do so. Fester just did not like the thought about being used as a pawn for other wolves' personal gains. He's decided to keep a close watch on Kale after they meet again sometime later on today.
His heart and mind seemed to have come to a mutual agreement this early in the day. He felt good. Good to go and good to do anything that he pleases. His eyes took site of a wild field mouse and he pounced on it and it the poor creature in bites. Such is the way of the circle of life.
Starting off early, Fester ran south as instructed. Time to find this monster serpent with poisonous fangs! He was excited. His tail was raised high as he ran through the forest. The wind on him face kept him alert and awake. His white sharp teeth were bared as he ran.

Although he had never been so far south or know what the desert may feel like, he can't wait to find out. This will add to another story he could tell his brother once they find each other again! When he had reached the edge of the forest and saw the dried up earth beyond it, he took a wild guess that the next little stretch must be the 'desert'. He panted just a little to catch his breath but he was not completely out of shape at all. His curious eyes scanned the area in front of him and he sneaked forward. The earth felt warm under his feet..It felt strange but pleasing at the same time. He scratched the earth and sniffed around.
There has to be some evidence around this place to bring back. Fangs..scales..feathers..anything will do.. He ran towards a fallen tree and investigated around it and found nothing. he moved onto the rocky patch and also found nothing but bird poop caked ontop of them. Must be vultures, he grumbled, they won't be able to eat this body. I refuse to die out here!
For some unknown reason, his wolf instincts somehow led him to a stream of water again. This wolf was just so comfortable with water that he was pleased to see it. Lapping up the water real quick he investigated this area too. The water was not quiet at all, however, he saw wild salmon splashing upstream and he sneaked along the shore and pawed at one really hard, flinging the fish towards dry land. He pawed at the fish to stop it from splashing about and he bit into it hard and yanked the flesh with his teeth. Fresh food tastes soo goooddd. It was then that when he put his paw down, was he met with something sharp that pricked him. He flinched and looked down..........

Out in the open...in bright day light... there were four noticeable reptilian spines just layed out on the grassy patch between the wild flowers... Just what in the hay happened here? he thought, It looked like a massacre had happened a long time ago.. He pawed at the rest and they all felt prickly.. they were rather long and quite thick... Putting his nose down low, he sniffed it and it has no smell to it. He wanted to lick the bones but had to be carefal. "were these the poisonous fangs he talked about?" he questioned... the bue/green were a nice colour..it reminded him of snakes... He has not really dealt with fighting snakes before. He had seen them from a distance as to not trespass in their paths but he knew how snakes looked like...
And now the real challenge began for Fester. How to take these all back to Kale? The wolf knew he couldn't carry all of it in his mouth since they might shatter or fall apart if he ran. He looked at the potential evidence laying in front of him and realised that he needed them to remain in one piece, if not, in two pieces at the least to make out what it is.......

He did a low sounding yelp as he thought about what to do. leaving the evidence be for a moment he went back to the water to think... Staring down at his own reflection, he used a paw to splash the water again, and played with it a little. Just enough to relax his own body and mind. And that's when an idea popped up. The fish he ate earlier. He could catch them, eat them, gut them, and make use of them!

Through sheer luck, the fish were around eggs season and these fish were big and long. Just like the spines he stepped on by accident. Sneaking upstream again, he pawed at the fish that jumped out of the waters. He didn't just swat at 4 of them but did at least 7 fish random fish. By the time he was done the fish fainted due to lack oxygen and he got rid of the small ones, eating them as snacks. only 4 big ones were left by now and he bit along the stomach area and gutted them out - flesh, eggs, innards- Fester ate all those up without hesitation. He did a sloppy job in gutting the fish but did not care. Next, he moved fast. He grabbed each spine with his teeth and shoved them with little force possible inside each fish. One he'd managed to keep them as a whole piece as he forced it inside a fish. The others, sadly, broke into 2 or 3 parts as he moved the delicate spines into the fish using his mouth and front paws.

When he was done, he dug a deep hole int eh earth away from scavengers and hid 3 fish containing the strange spines in there. He knew he had to carry 1 fish back at a time due to their sizes. He marked his dirt mountain by doing his business on top of it. With that tiring idea in mind of running back and forth between lands, Fester took at least half the day running back to the forest, digging another dirt hole to hide his fish and spines, and then head back to the desert-like place to transfer all 4 fish to wait on Kale once more when he finished retrieving the last of the bunch. Again, if felt like Kale was trying to exhaust his stamina but the young wolf refuse to falter. Laying beside the new dirt mountain back home in the familiar foresty environment, his tongue rolled out of his mouth as he rested. . . From now until sundown, he did nothing but lay low and wait on Kale. Soon night will come and the Berserker will show up once more... He'll be watchful and on guard... if he didn't get poisoned from having touched the spines with his mouth that is....

Apprentice? Is that what Scavenge was? Was all of this treasure hunting a test to see if he had what it took to become a true monster hunter? Scavenge wasn’t sure what to think of that. The freedom to roam and search for treasure was what Scavenge desires most, and monster hunting certainly seemed apt to grant him that. Would it also come with regular meals and a full belly? Fellow adventurers to keep him company? He had dozens of questions for Greenleaf, but now didn’t seem to be the time. He still had more proofs to find.

Travel to the badlands was horrendous work, but he didn’t worry about hunger. Other animals perished along the way, driven to death by heat and thirst, and Scavenge picked off whatever the vultures left behind. The sun beat relentlessly and Scavenge felt himself slowing to a sluggish pace. For the first time, he was grateful for his skinny form, fur and bones with just a wiry scrap of muscle beneath his skin. No fat meant less insulation for the heat. Still, his coat was thick and he was built for colder climates.

The smell of water hit him like an ice cold reprieve. He raised his head, panting hard as he squinted against the sun. Green stretched desperately against the gold-brown backdrop of wasteland. Scavenge couldn’t push himself to a trot let alone a full run, but he dragged his paws toward the vision swallowing hope that it wasn’t a trick brought on by maddening thirst.

An oasis!

Scavenge crept closer, unblinking, and dipped a tiny toe into the pool. The cool wash of water forced him to shiver and he rushed forward, immersing himself in the shallow pool. He drank until his belly bulged and his guts sloshed. He spent the day lazing next to the pool in a stupor, drifting in and out of the only real rest he’d gotten since he met the badlands. When the sun dropped and the temperature with it, Scavenge finally pulled himself to his feet and set off again, reinvigorated.

He’d spend the evening searching then head back to the oasis after dawn. He could branch out like that, star-shaped, always returning to where he knew he’d have water. Hopefully he could find proof within a night’s journey of the pool.

He found nothing on the first night, nor the second, but on the third he shot southbound from his oasis and right at the zenith of night he caught sight of something strange on the landscape.

A black pit sunk deep into the earth, larger than Scavenger - larger than Greenleaf - monstrous in its circumference. It was a cave of some kind, whether natural or made by some monstrous creature, Scavenge didn’t know. But he did remember Greenleaf mentioning these basilisk creatures lived in tunnels.

Scavenge swallowed, wet his lips nervously, and ducked into the lip of the cave. He kept his head low, crouching and creeping with his tail tucked tight against his belly. Scavenge squeezed his eyes shut and attempted to navigate by nose alone. It wouldn’t do to catch sight of one of these beasties after Greenleaf warned him what their gaze could do.

“Ouch!” His blind meandering led him into something poky. Scavenge squinted one eye open and came face to face with a spiralling green horn. The end shattered where he’d bumped into it.

Scavenge wheeled back, eyes wide. Was this a clue? He stretched toward it, sniffing, but didn’t recognize any of the odors it gave off.

So delicate! If he wasn’t careful, it would break more. How was he supposed to carry something so fragile all the way back to the mountains? Scavenge grimaced as he reached for the horn, grasping it delicately between his teeth. He pulled it free in careful inches, shivering excess energy from his muscles.

He turned and set back toward the oasis. He’d give himself one more day to relax and collect his baring and set out for Greenleaf the following night, his precious cargo in tow.

When Dreams of Amber Starlight had returned to Kale Greenleaf with the roc talon and he immediately had –another- request for her, she could not keep her lip from curling into a snarl, teeth visible on one side of her mouth, and when he dared to call her apprentice when she had only actually agreed to help him with the first request, a growl began to roll low in her throat. “I am not your apprentice,” she snapped, “and when this is through find yourself some other sucker. I’m through.” Amber glared at him, hackles raised, daring him to try and push her. She didn’t care he was almost certainly able to overpower her without even trying – her fury was too close to boiling over. She gathered supplies and headed out, not even caring if she found anything or not, and toying with the idea of never returning to him even if she DID find some evidence of this newest beast. This was the last time she would ever agree to help a stranger without asking a whole lot of questions, that was for sure. Her heart was big and generous but this went way beyond generosity, way beyond the limits of what she’d been willing to give. The only reason she hadn’t quit already was that deep down a kernel of curiosity still burned and she couldn’t help but see it through. Amber was particularly irritated about this portion of the quest, for her sleeping schedule had been turned upside down by necessity, trying to rest during the hottest hours of the day and traveling at night. She was better suited to the chill that night always brings in the desert, entirely overwhelmed by the midday sun beating down on her, and had learned her lesson quickly. She had started smelling water and plants a bit earlier this evening and was doing her best to follow the scent on the intermittent winds. Finally she spied a small oasis and moved into a jog, hoping she’d find something here. Even a beast needed water, didn’t it? As she shifted to be on alert, watching out for it, her irritation at even being here was temporarily forgotten. As she poked around the sands, looking along the water line and under trees, she spied something shiny glinting in the moonlight and moved closer. As she carefully unearthed it, Amber realized it was a delicate horn of some kind, soft rays spiking out in fragments wherever the light hits it, but the color was hard to see in the low light. It seemed quite fragile; every time she moved it, a shard fell off of it onto the sand beneath her paws. She knew she’d have to wrap it in layers to carry it home, and set about rearranging her supplies so that she’d have enough materials to protect it. She turned around to head home as soon as it was wrapped, not caring whether it was the proof that infuriating berserker wanted. It was what she had and it was what he was getting.
