Picking his way through the fields, the worst of the winter snows melted and giving way to the first kiss of spring, the stallion was feeling thoughtful as he made his usual rounds. Life had been good to the stallion, and he considered where his life had gone, and where it might yet head. As a youth, he'd never thought he'd be settled down with a mare, with three children now well into adulthood. As a young stallion, he had once thought he'd be on the road until his bones gave out, facing evil, saving the damned, and healing the wounded had been his destiny--or so he'd believed.

But fate had a funny way of working, and the stallion had parted ways with the Angeni of Redemption--and still waited for her return, even after all these years. Where she had gone off to, what personal business she had found herself on, he did not know--but he knew they would meet again. Patience was a quality he had in droves, and he knew that the spirits would meddle in his affairs when the time was right.

He had his mate, he had his children, he had trained Mikaru to become a great knight in his own right, and he was able to serve the Kawani as a healer. Life was good for the stallion and yet... There was still something missing. Did he yearn for the escpadaes of his youth, of doing something more to serve the spirits and the Kawani? Though he traveled often with Nita, seeking out those most in need of healing, he also knew that he was getting older. Mikaru no longer turned to him as he once did, and his children had already grown into fine individuals. Life was quiet, and while he knew to enjoy the peace while it lasted, Galahad couldn't help but feel as if he were called to do more.

So it was, the stallion trotted further from the hills and plains Nita and he had temporarily taken up residence. He'd heard rumor of a Kawani village not far, and while he'd primarily left it alone, a small part of him wondered about the camp. Two-leggers weren't beings he came in contact with often, and much preferred it that way. Still, it was better to be prepared, for Nita's sake if not his own. Besides, though they weren't of the same species, even a two-legger might find him or herself in need of healing or protection. Surely, a look wouldn't hurt.

So it was, the stallion carried forth on his journey, letting the spirits guide his hooves.

Mirza was growing increasingly agitated with these impossible Kawani. Despite his presence, they continued to act as though they could escape his watchful eyes. They were selfish, rash, and greedy. Many thought too highly of themselves, as if their lives were more important than others. They would not hesitate to harm or cheat one another, to act without care for their neighbors. It disgusted him.

He was an enforcer of his laws, and he expected these villagers to follow them. All they had to do was be kind to one another. All he wanted was for them to live harmoniously and cooperatively with themselves and the creatures with whom they share their land... he growled as he glowered down at the remains of the most recent criminal. This fellow had stolen food from a widow and her child; Mirza was still trying to discover what happened to the father. When he figured out who was responsible for this man's disappearance, they would suffer the same fate as this thief who thought it was appropriate to take advantage of a family in need.

Mirza was firmly intolerant to any act he believed to amoral, and his crimes were punishable by death. That was the only punishment which existed. He did not accept redemption, believing that one who could stray so far from the light could never return. Why take that chance, anyway? Redemption took time, and the risk outweighed the benefit.

Still, it it appeared that fear of death was not a motivator for these villagers to alter their behavior. He was still killing at least one villager a month, it seemed. They knew of the lion in the woods: a man-eater, as they called him. He was not some story with which they scared their children. He was a real threat that would descend upon them at any time, yet, still, they behaved as though they were exempt from his laws.

Frustrated, he rose, sauntering deeper into the trees, leaving the criminal at the edge of the woods to be found by the villagers. He knew it would not make a difference. They would never change.
