It was interesting to see the vaunted High Class talking amongst themselves so much with nary a bit of gossip. For all those Lords and Ladies to consider what role they'd prefer, Hunter or Guard. Frankly, Xiyang assumed most of the laziest would choose the latter, as Guards were very seldom called upon to do more than look imposing these days.

Of course that assumed these lions were capable of reasoning that out. If they were, they probably would have supported Kimondo less after the announcement. Or rather, once Xiyang had stood up and made it a choice between herself, a child of Shangyue, and Kimondo, the untainted ruler who had replaced him.

The former Princess understood full well that her presence in the pride was somewhat precarious given her parentage and her own inclinations. Even now, Xiyang had her ambitions and absolutely no interest in wandering the rogue lands and spending each and every day looking for enough food to fill her belly and find a safe place to sleep. She certainly wouldn't mind wielding power within the pride, but any obvious steps she took would surely damn her.

So she bided her time, and subtly showed the Queen and Shaman that she was far smarter than most of the plebian masses. Which was why she would wait and see what those two would prefer she do, in terms of a job. As a Huntress she'd range farther out and spend less time in the heart of Mwezi lands. But there was also the increased chance that she could make contact with potential troublesome elements, as her father had done with the infamous and unmourned Firaga and Tyfu. As a Guard, she'd be kept closer, yes, but also granted a measure of influence within the pride. Xiyang saw pros and cons to both roles, for herself and for the Queen, and so was content to hear what Kimondo would prefer.

She'd be able to work with either, but her long-term plan called for the Queen to make the choice, and thus carry a bit of doubt as to whether it was the right one as the seasons turned to years.

In the meantime, the black lioness derived a dark entertainment from watching her fellows in the High Class figure out what to do. Such fools, never once considering that the pride could not continue to support such a large group of non-contributing individuals. How she loved to watch them writhe!

Somewhere in the dark, out of the way of the busier areas of the pride, Rahim was sitting and dully considering what to make of his future. He looked like his father, but it was well masked by the dark purple in his mane and the black mask over his eyes.. that and the fact he was born after Shangyue's death had helped him blend in over his lifetime but now he was going to have to do something. Contribute something. Get involved with people.

From the outside, it looked like he was suffering the same melodramatic indignation as some of the other high class members. That was certainly how it looked to Delshad, who was rolled over onto his back and staring up at his pensive older brother with a smile on his face.

"You could just be a hunter with me, you know," the younger lion said, "It's actually not that bad. Even with hunt leaders, it's not that hard to skip a couple days here and there. They can't keep track of everybody."

Rahim stared down at Delshad and wondered how his younger siblings had ever properly integrated. He remembered the great fuss they had caused when they were born, it seemed so anti-climatic for them to just be normal hunters and whatnot. Was that what awaited him, too? It was both comforting and upsetting. He still didn't want to have to deal with others.

Xiyang had been enjoying her walk when her red eyes fell upon two familiar forms. Oh, what had she done now to deserve this? Idiot brothers. Well, idiot brother and idiot half-brother. She still didn't understand what had possessed her mother to actually bear cubs to that obnoxious son of Tyfu's, but Parisa could rot in her own grave for all Xiyang cared.

From the posture, she guessed that Rahim was as uncomfortable as most of the High Class, trying to figure out what sort of work he would actually have to do now. Delshad, on the other paw, seemed to be enjoying his older sibling's discomfort. For a moment, Xiyang felt the kinship. But just as quickly she shoved it aside. She needed no brothers mucking things up. Even so...she couldn't resist adding herself to their conversation.

"What's wrong, dear brother?" the lioness asked, slinking in like a shadow. "Afraid of doing an honest day's work?"

Two sets of pale eyes turned on Xiyang when her voice came out of the nearby shadows. She was even harder to see than Delshad but both boys knew exactly who it was the instant they looked over.. and neither expression changed. Rahim still looked uncomfortable and annoyed, Delshad still looked pleasantly oblivious.

"I'm not afraid," Rahim said, "I just don't see why we should have to."

That was a lie, but he sounded more defensive than he wanted to so he chose to lean into it. He'd been at the meeting, he saw what happened to the young lion who had taken this stance and how even Xiyang had stepped in to shut him down.. so at least he sort of knew what to expect when he was saying it. Delshad, on the other hand, hadn't been there and looked surprised at the middle brother's declaration. That wasn't what they were talking about, maybe he was just waiting for like company (meaning someone from the high class) to show up..

He opened his mouth to say something and then shut it again. It would be far more interesting to watch how Xiyang would eviscerate Rahim than to try to cut into it. He stayed comfortably on his back and staring up at them, though.

"You don't see why we should have to," Xiyang repeated slowly. Sarcasm dripped from her tongue with each and every syllable. Oh, such an idiot her brother was. He really should know better than that.

"Well," the lioness continued, "would you like that in alphabetical order? Or perhaps you could wait until the last minute to make your choice and have it carved into you with someone's claws? I'll never understand how Mother could birth anyone so completely oblivious because it's obvious if you had half her brains you wouldn't be allowed to remain after Father's death because you'd be too dangerous to the pride."

As for Delshad...he'd wait. He was certainly showing more intelligence by Rahim simply by keeping his mouth shut. Hell, he was probably anticipating a lovely show as she verbally tore the older brother to shreds.

Rahim narrowed his eyes at her. Sarcasm, threat of violence, insult his intelligence.. check, check, check. He wondered if she knew just how predictable she was, if she knew that she wasn't nearly as clever as she thought she was.. the only thing he was sure of was that she was exactly as dangerous as she thought, maybe not for the reasons she thought, though.

"Is that the best you can do?" he asked, "Kimondo won't resort to violence lest she be compared to our dear late father. What reason has convinced you to get a job?"

He was afraid of Xiyang but he wasn't afraid of physically fighting her. In part because he had long ago realized that it wasn't her style. Not unless it was a last resort. Delshad was less certain that she wouldn't find a way to physically shut up the middle brother and he wisely decided to roll back over, stand up and move himself out of the way a bit.

This was going to be interesting.

"Dear brother," the lioness retorted, "whoever said I would injure you? There are plenty here who would do so did they see you acting the Prince you haven't been for years." Really, he had never mastered the art of the silken paw concealing the claws. Hopeless.

"As for myself, a job has been inevitable. It was only a matter of time before the Queen declared it a necessity." Glancing to ensure that both of the boys were paying attention, Xiyang continued. "With the size of the pride, it's impractical to have such a large number of lions who contribute nothing and simply consume resources. Already the Hunters must range fairly far out to find enough meat to bring back for hungry mouths. Another aspect is the belief these priviliged lions have in their own superiority which helped contribute to our own father's rise to power when taken to the extreme. Then there's the fact that any lions who show a negative reaction to this announcement and a reluctance to do their share will be marked as troublemakers, regardless of their former status and reputation. That's a true detriment in the long run. Lastly, if these people go out and work most days, they won't be lying around contributing to the overpopulation." That was a real jab at certain high class lions who did nothing but eat, sleep, and have sex most days and nights.

"But of course, I'm sure you know absolutely all of that already," Xiyang concluded dryly. Not to mention there were several other good reasons to get a job, but she wasn't about to tell Rahim that if he couldn't figure them out on his own.

Whoever said I would injure you?

Rahim rolled his eyes. It certainly hadn't been him, he specifically pointed out that the queen wouldn't as her biggest weakness was her keen interest in avoiding any and all comparisons to her predecessor. Xiyang threatening to hurt him would actually be the most true since she seemed to be one of the ones most invested in the family.

"I'm surprised you sincerely believe that," he said, "I remember you being the only one to take Mother's side when us middle siblings were born and everybody else wanted to push us to just keep our heads down and become hunters or whatever."

Parisa had pushed them all to remember that they were royalty, even though they were born without a father and without a title. He remembered how Liuhe had begged them not to become Lords, and how amazing it had been that even two of them had agreed.

Delshad watched from his newly distant place in the audience with great interest. He was a bit disappointed they had chosen to spar verbally, but he kept that to himself. It was easy to forget that these two were not just his siblings but his aunt and uncle. It just seemed natural to think of himself as part of Shangyue's lineage because of them but he was a grandchild. Add the b*****d lineage.. his perspective on the whole thing was very different than the others and fights like this showed it.

Nobody ever accused him of acting like a prince.

"It is not my responsibility to think for you," Xiyang replied calmly. "You asked for reasons to get a job, and I was magnimonious enough to answer. But even shared parentage won't get you more than that if I don't wish it." Frankly, she was getting bored of Rahim's bullheaded stupidity after just a few exchanges. He obviously wasn't capable of thinking about what others might gain from a situation.

For example, Xiyang had thought it perfect that her siblings would continue to believe themselves utterly important and powerful within the pride. The pride could then turn on them and hopefully rid her of the problems they proposed. The fact that said pride was too lily-livered to consider executions outside of self-defense and Shangyue himself had spoiled the plot.

As for Delshad, well, he showed plenty of sense by staying out of things and observing. Who knew, he might even learn something useful. Xiyang walked past him on her way to her own den, allowing a potentially supportive touch from her tail as she went by.

Rahim rolled his eyes again and didn't say anything as Xiyang strode past him and their younger brother. The purple lion glared at Delshad and then got up to walk in the other direction, away from their sinister older sister.

"Come on, Delshad," he said.

Delshad noticed that Xiyang seemed to appreciate his silence while she put Rahim in his place, but he opted to get up and follow after his brother when he stormed off. Rahim still had to decide and Delshad still had plenty of thoughts..

"Do you really think you're above this stuff?" he asked, catching up to Rahim and matching his pace as they hurried away. If that was really the case, his remark about how easy it was to skip out on a hunt should have been extremely compelling!

"No," Rahim answered, "But that's what I'd rather she thought."

Delshad glanced back over his shoulder in the direction Xiyang had gone. If Rahim was trying to seem smarter than Xiyang thought.. it wasn't really very impressive. Especially since there was no obvious reason to lie about all that stuff. It was just giving her more ways to feel superior to them.

"Sooo.. you gonna join the hunt with me?"

Rahim sighed.

Probably, he thought.

Fin!
