Bio
Born and raised in Ecruteak City Su Yan lived with his single mother in a rather uneventful life. He often busied himself attending the theatre where he would watch the kimono girls preform with their pokemon. As a young boy, he aspired to be like them as he much preferred the act of performing in time and partnership with pokemon then brutish battles most trainers participated in. He actually approached the kimono girls with this goal in mind and explained his dream to them. They were receptive but thought him a bit too young. They told him to practice and gome back to them when he was a bit older.
So that was what he aimed to do. Su Yan returned home and started thinking up ways he could perform with them. What kind of pokemon would he perform with? All the kimono girls had evolutions of the Eevee line. Should he get one as well?
However, it wouldn't come to be. While he was at the theatre two trainers got into a disagreement, and as trainers do to settle it pokemon were called out. Su Yan, half upset by the fact they were disrupting the show and considering himself a sort of honorary employee decided he should break up the fight before the show was ruined. However one of the trainers didn't have good control of his own pokemon, a Charizard. The pokemon was already wanting to fight and despite the other trainer calling back his pokemon, the Charizard attacked anyway, letting off flamethrowers at the patrons. Many people took heavy burns that day including Su Yan. A significant part of his body was pretty heavily burned, including a large portion of his face, leaving him blind.
This event left him in hospital and recovery for a rather lengthy amount of time, and, pretty much dashed his dreams of performing with pokemon in the way he had hoped. He gives up on his dream for a time.
That was until hearing the broadcast of a contest on the news reinvigorated a fire in him. Experiencing such an event with senses other than the sight was interesting, and perhaps an angle not many people approached it with. So Su Yan attended a few contests in person, getting a better feel for the format before deciding this is what he wanted to do.
Even if it was unorthodox, he would perform with pokemon and bring joy to others as he had intended all those years ago.
And perhaps Joy to himself.
Extra He seems to have a fear of Trainer battles or pokemon that trainers may not have full control over. He's in a weird middle ground. He does not blame the pokemon for what happened, more so the trainer for bringing a pokemon he did not have control over into a civilian environment. However, he is still extra weary around wild pokemon and especially those of trainers raised for battle alone.
He nods along as the professor spoke to him about coordinating. Glad that he agreed or at least said he thought that way. He sometimes felt like the separate schools of Pokemon Training were at odds with one another.
"Yes. I feel raising them only fight is... dangerous." and perhaps rather cruel. Yes, they were working with pokemon, but the performance nature, working in tandem with a pokemon to both make something unique and beautiful always appealed much more to him than the act of letting Pokemon bite and scratch at each other to find a victor. Though, then again his own experiences and biases did color his opinion somewhat, of course. And it was a bias he surely was going to have to overcome, Su Yan didn't want his fear of battles to control him, part of why he wanted to do this in a sort of journey format. Catching pokemon would, in a way ease him into dealing with wild pokemon and, competing with others in a setting with them. Once he felt he was ready, he was sure he could still go home and ask for that job he always wanted.
If they would still have him.
As Elm tells him to stay put he gives a nod, he has as little interest in knocking over, tripping or scattering the professor's work as Elm did. Instead, he makes himself a little more comfortable. Less rigid stance, releasing tension from his shoulders and rubbing a hand along the back of his neck. He doesn't feel like a long time, that the professor is gone. It seems rather quick. With the help of the man's instructions and white cane hitting one of the legs of the table, his hand can find the cool surface of the lab table. "Here?" he ponders aloud, then when it was affirmed he stops to study the pokemon as they were released.
The first was Chikorita.
A strong smell hit his nose and the soft sound of the pokemon. Like wind whistling through long grass, or perhaps the whistle his mother could do when a leaf was pressed to her lips. He reaches out to touch the pokemon. It feels smooth and strange. It was for sure a grass type. But already his mind was working for contest appeal. He quite liked pretty and cute things back when he could see, and those standards were still in place now. just changed in criteria. Her voice was rather silent, and while the smell was pleasant it was unlikely it could be a turning factor in performances (and, he was one of those rare people who loved the smell of glooms, so can he trust his nose at this one?)
Next was Totodile who, from the description, Elm gave and the noise of pure energy that there was already a few fear-based red flags going off in his head. Energetic. Bitey. Hard to control. Of course, he didn't want full subservience of a pokemon, but he also didn't want a pokemon that was hard to predict a possible danger. Su Yan doesn't even dare try and reach out to it, instead, he seems to recoil a bit from it, moving on rather quickly.
The last pokemon squeaked. Like, an adorable, high pitch squeak. The fear melted a bit and was replaced with a small smile as he reaches for the thing, hand recoiling a bit at the mention of flames, old burn wounds still visible on parts of his arm. But that was a Charizard. That was a battle pokemon. This little guy was a blank slate, and, seemed just about as afraid of Su Yan as he was of it. In a way, he felt a bit of comradery there. So hand goes back out, it's met with some of the softest furs he's felt. Cyndaquil seems to lean into the touch and squeaks at him again. It was cute.
He realizes he had been scratching the Cyndaquil's face for a rather long moment and pulls back, trying to appear more professional, as if his license to own a pokemon could be revoked by the professor.
"It's like this Cyndaquil, please. I think we have something in common and I would love to grow together," he speaks at the general direction he had last heard the professor's voice come from.
