Anwar was absolutely, thoroughly, and complete disgusted with the Myrsky Syntynyt. Oh sure, she’d known intellectually that in the vague time before she’d been born lionesses had been considered lesser beings and had been treated accordingly. She’d been born to one of the first litters after the Warlord had changed the laws to allow females to become Reavers and more.

Laws could be changed back, unfortunately.

She’d hoped for something, to be grandfathered in to a position, but instead they wanted to make her a Valkyrie. To rank her beneath so many of the morons she’d made into Reavers. That was...unacceptable. It said nothing of the female Warlord they’d had either, but as that wasn’t Anwar the dark lioness couldn’t spare a thought for her.

She couldn’t remain. Not and keep her own pride and combat capabilities. Which brought her here, through the harsh desert, to a pride that might just welcome an experienced Captain. She didn’t expect them to allow her to keep her old rank...at least not until she’d proven herself. But experience did count for a fair bit.

“I’ve heard,” the lioness announced loudly to the ears she was certain were listening, “that this is a pride which values its lionesses for all their skills, and not just their ability to bear children. Have I found such a place...or have I been told lies about cowards who would keep their females downbeaten to salve a male’s pride?”

Katranak was overflowing with unspent energy after weeks of near starvation and sand in her eyes, ears, nose and everywhere else. Now that the pride was getting back to normal (mysterious divine rumours aside), she was eager to get back out and about. To start, she was among the volunteers to head out to keep an eye out for newcomers while also helping in the survey to see how the desert itself fared in the supernatural storm. She was glad when a lioness showed up with a challenge. The first since the storm. Her mane was brown but she was obviously strong and capable..

"You heard right," Katranak said, coming out to meet Anwar and taking up a place opposite her. Nearby, Utsaha dutifully found a spot to watch from. This lioness, she noticed, did not look anything like a proper rogue. The jackal had no idea if Katranak noticed it, but it would certainly make the duel more interesting! They got a lot of capable rogues but the ones who looked well-trained were always the most interesting.

"My name is Katranak, I'm a soldier for the Motoujamii," Katranak introduced herself, taking more time than usual since the challenger brought up gender, "Our regents are chosen by popular vote and both are female. Anybody of any gender is welcome here as long as they can prove themselves. If you want in, you'll have to beat me."

And she braced herself.

"Excellent," Anwar replied, pleased to not only hear confirmation of the rumors she'd tracked but also to be facing a fellow lioness. She might have preferred to completely outmatch a male, but beggars couldn't be choosers. She meant to be a chooser in the future, but for the time being she was the supplicant, seeking entry to a pride that would hopefully serve her better than that of her birth.

Without another wasted word, the lioness attacked, lashing out with a forepaw. It was a glancing blow however, and not at all the opening she had desired.

Katranak appreciated that Anwar didn't say anything else (though she was privately annoyed not to get an introduction of any sort) and went right for the fight. This was what would really matter anyway.. she didn't really notice, as Utsaha had, that her opponent didn't seem like a rogue but she did pick up on some implied meaning in the question she had asked. This lioness had something to prove.

Unfortunately, Katranak was ready for her and dodged out of the way, barely struck by the paw thrown at her. She retaliated by rearing up and reaching out with both paws to shove Anwar away from her.

On the side lines, Utsaha was starting to move, circling the fight to keep track of what was happening and bobbing her head up and down as if she were able to help each get out of the way of the blows sent their way. She had too much practice spectating at this point, Kat had high expectations.

The brown-maned lioness cursed under her breath as her opponent shoved her away, upsetting her balance. Rookie mistakes, that's what Anwar was doing, and she hated herself for making them. What she needed to do was calm down, breathe deeply, and recenter herself.

To that end, the former Captain took a few additional steps in the direction of Katranak's shove, putting more space between the two. That should enable her to better set herself up to receive the next blow.

Katranak was almost surprised to be off to such a good start. It seemed like the strange terrain was tripping up her opponent more than a weeks-long break was slowing the Firekin down. She watched as Anwar started to put space between them and quickly closed the gap before it could be of any use against her. This put them too close together for a proper tackle so Katranak reached out with a heavy paw and aimed for Anwar's face.

On the sidelines, Utsaha was impressed that Katranak was not more rusty, and disappointed that this newcomer was off to such a bad start.

Anwar growled as she took yet another blow, her tactical retreat having failed her. It was annoying - she didn't want to lose - but at the same time it was gratifying to meet a lioness of such skill in this pride. It made her all the more determined to win a place for herself.

It didn't help that Katranak was significantly larger than the Stormborn, or that she was using that additional weight to good effect as Anwar's paws batted ineffectually against her opponent.

Roll 3: Hit! (brutal, Kat)

This was possibly the best fight Katranak had ever had, and it was not for lack of a skilled opponent. She was definitely winning in this fight but she wasn't just destroying a random weakling, if there was no challenge to it then even Katranak would have stopped and suggested the lioness was in the wrong place. She was thrilled to have such an exhilarating outlet for all the energy built up during a few stir-crazy weeks.

"Come on," she said, "You can do better than that."

She dodged again and reached out to push Anwar down. If she didn't start doing better, Katranak was aiming to pin her. Utsaha stopped circling around the perimeter of the fight and sat down, starting to lose interest as it appeared only her lioness was getting anything done. This would be an unusual one to discuss later.

It was embarrassing to have her opponent telling her what she already knew. Anwar was frustrated - no, furious - at herself for her miserable performance today. To be losing so badly...it was as if she was the rawest Reaver recruit!

"I know that," she growled in response, managing to evade being completely pinned by wriggling out of the way. The Stormborn flailed at her opponent in passing, knowing that any blow she landed there would be more luck than aim. Still, she had to try something.

Rather than distracting her, the taunting seemed to be helping Anwar. It could go either way, depending on the lion, but Katranak noticed it. She just barely dodged a good hit to the face, and stumbling back she pushed forward to tackle her opponent. She wasn't getting a running start or getting anywhere off the ground, this would just be brute strength but at this point, she had a feeling the lioness wouldn't know how to stay upright in the sand when pressed.

Utsaha laid down, shaking her head.

Sand was definitely treacherous footing, but it was barely worthy of note in the face of how badly Anwar was doing against her opponent. Why, Katranak barely had to do anything at all! And still Anwar was struggling horrifically. She had never, ever, been so badly overpowered in her life and it was making her angry.

Anger was, sadly, never the solution. Two out of four legs slipped on the sand, bringing Anwar down with Katranak on top of her. The smaller lioness hissed her frustration. There was no possible chance of recovery.

Roll 5: Miss (wtf)
Total: 13 - Katranak wins

The fight was over suddenly as they fell to the ground, even Katranak barely kept her footing as it happened. Utsaha chuckled off to the side, noticing as her lioness slipped up at the very last moment. There was no doubt that the challenger had failed to win her way in but Katranak had been so close to a perfect performance. That would definitely make it more interesting to talk about.

With a grunt, Katranak picked herself up and forced Utsaha's snickering out of her mind as she backed up.

"Better luck next time," she said, shaking the sand out of her fur and straightening up, "You can keep trying. Get more practice in the sand and come back in a week."

"Ugh," was Anwar's first reaction to the unsurprising news of her loss.

"Well, I should thank you for this confirmation that your pride doesn't let anything as stupid as gender shape its opinions," the lioness continued. "My name is Anwar, and I won't forget this."

Pulling herself to her feet, the one-time Captain retreated away from the pride's lands. Her tone had been such that it was difficult to say whether it was threat, promise, or gratitude.

One thing was certain. She would return.
