Random Event: Aww, what cute little will-o-the-wisps! They drift and dance around, but evade any attempts to touch them, and eventually fade away.
Notes: Snorre & co are on a viking with an NPC captain.

After the encounter with the giant circle of death, the viking band had done some minor investigations and made the wise decision to head away from it. Snorre hadn't made a good impression on the other newbies in the group that found it with him, but he made up for it (a bit) by being with the captain already when Ivar showed up to report what they had found.

Since then, Snorre was less prone to sending Nanna off to investigate things on her own and instead kept his slithery thrall nearby in case he needed a second set of eyes or a messenger if something else weird as hell turned up. She was a good thrall, though she was only a thrall on a technicality.. there had to be ways to control a snake if you really wanted to it, but Snorre didn't really want and Nanna was fine with that.

It was late in the evening and the band was camped for the night so Snorre and Nanna had gone off for a walk on their own when Snorre started seeing strange lights in the distance.. and he started following them. He was wary after the last strange encounter but he was also intrigued.. and eventually, he was annoyed because when he caught up, they mostly seemed to be leading him and Nanna in a giant circle.

"Do you think we're drunk?"

"...no. We don't even have the means to get drunk out here, idiot."

"Oh... right."

The blonde lion shrugged his shoulders before scratching his belly, feeling rather bored, confused, and tired. He was old enough to not whine about it, but young enough to still feel irritated and tired at the littlest things. The giant mass of decay that they had come across had been fascinating, a story to tell when he was an old man bragging about his glory days. But everything after that had still been boring. They didn't seem to have much success at any raiding, but instead kept finding things that were straight out of the old weird magic stories to scare cubs at night.

"Don't touch them, and you'll be fine." Melkofur was irritated that he hadn't yet been able to find something to take home; he had a prospective wife he wanted to marry, but needed a decent gift to make the offering feel like more than a hollow promise. Strong blood or not, he wanted to make a real impression. And thus far, he hadn't found anything except ghost stories to tell stupid youngsters when he returned. Like Cadwgan.

"Well then what...." Cadwgan was going to finish his thought, but he noticed that Snorre was suddenly near them...following these little spirits? He stared, slack jawed, unsure if he should warn the fool or follow after him. Melkofur just sighed, heavily.

Of the two of them, Nanna was far more captivated by the will-o-the-wisps and so she slithered on ahead a bit as Snorre stumbled to a stop at the sight of two lions suddenly on his path. He'd been hearing their voices but had purposefully not paid them much mind since strange things were going on all around.. he was glad they had a normal source. Even if it was two lions he'd made a terrible impression on before.

"You're seeing them too, eh?" he asked, prompting Nanna to stop chasing after the nearest light. She looked sheepishly at the other lions there and then slithered back around to be by Snorre's feet. Rule one of being a good thrall was to stick close to your master, especially around strange Reavers.

"See them? I want to touch them!" Cad was rather fascinated by this little magic trick. He wasn't fully convinced that they weren't all drunk, staring at the same thing. He wanted to make sure it wasn't a firefly, even if that meant he would be cursed to hell and back, or whatever those witches in the woods liked to threaten (that was all hearsay, as well).

"And if you bring down some curse on us all, I'll kill you." Melkofur wasn't in the mood to be messing with things of unknown origin. He would rather prefer to live another day, and gain some real traction in his career.

Cad sighed, and made a face. "Awww, c'mon, you know nothing is going to happen! Right, Snorre?" He shot a wink over to his not-really buddy, hoping to get some level of traction with convincing Melkofur that it was fine to mess with the little glowing wisps.

Snorre actually smiled at Cad's response, and then gave Melkofur a quiet, critical look. He rather liked Cadwgan, he was realizing. Melkofur was just so gruff and unpleasant. He was a perfect Stormborn, of course, but that wasn't how Snorre identified so he just didn't really like the more serious fellow. Cad's remark and wink drew his attention back to the situation and he grinned.

"They can't be that dangerous, Mel," he said, assigning the blue grump a nickname knowing he was going to hate it, "I've been following them around for a little while now, I'm pretty sure we're right back where we started. Right, Nanna?"

Nanna was swaying, watching the dancing wisps and half-listening to the conversation amongst the lions.. but at the mention of her name, she stopped moving and looked up to Snorre with a nod.

"Not quite but a big circle, yes," she agreed.

Melkofur glanced down towards the green snake, his golden eyes narrowing at her. He wasn't sure if he knew of another snake thrall within the pride, but he had to admit to himself that he was a bit jealous of Snorre in that regard. A snake seemed rather advantageous to have. Small, quiet, can sneak into small places, and is otherwise ignored. Not like a lion, especially those that liked to treat them like dolls.

"Your little snake is rather smart," he said, the first compliment he had given to Snorre.

Cad jumped on that softness that Melkofur just exposed. "Yeah! So clearly it's fine to touch one yeah? Yeah?!" The blonde was like a cub just ready to get into trouble so he could climb himself out of it. Life was worth living, why worry about the things that would never happen?

Before anyone could react, Cad jumped into the air and smacked one of the wisps. It seemingly swiveled around Cad's paw, but nothing seemed to have happened....right?

Nanna smirked at Melkofur, naturally quite pleased to have been both noticed and praised. It was enough for Snorre to look down at her and almost smile-- but then Cadwgan was suddenly jumping at one of the wisps and time seemed to slow down around them. He had just said he thought they were harmless but he still braced himself for something dramatic.. only for the wisp to move out of the way and for Cad to hit the ground again with an exceptionally loud thud in the tense silence.

"Well," Snorre said finally, "That was disappointing."

At least this wasn't a giant, ominous circle of death but he half-expected something more interesting to come of this. They seemed strangely alive and yet they just.. moved out of the way.

"Hold on."

Snorre moved forward and batted at another wisp, thinking if he could just herd it towards Cad they could get it together.. but it just gently twisted out of reach when his paw came near. Nanna snickered quietly in the background.

Melkofur had moved to try and shove Cad in midair to not touch the blasted thing, but nothing had happened. He felt the strain against his muscles when he suddenly halted, the edge of panic and fury pumping through his veins. These two were absolute idiots, and he was slowly starting to think that the snake had the brains that Snorre was lacking.

"Oh, oh!" Cad was thinking that Snorre must have been thinking. "Yeah, let's see if we can push them together! I bet something would happen once we got two of them to touch." He started flailing a paw in the air, hoping that the wisps would shift with the air movement his paws were making. It seemed to dance a lot more than it had been, but it wasn't moving all that much towards the one that Snorre had.

"I swear, you two are really cubs who never learned how to grow up," Melkofur groaned. Out on a viking, and playing with magic.

Snorre nodded and kept on trying to coax the wisp nearest him over to where Cad was flailing right back. It would be obvious to anybody not hoping for something fantastic that they weren't making any progress, but every once in a while the wisp would move towards Cad and Snorre would be encouraged. Even though the wisp would immediately move back, making no net movement in the direction he wanted.

He did pause when Melkofur groaned at them.

"What's life without a little fun?" he asked, glancing over at Melkofur while still idly swatting at the wisps, "Everything on a viking is reckless and dangerous, I'd rather enjoy some magical bullshit than get high off making random strangers out here suffer."

Maybe he wasn't cut out to be a proper Reaver, but was it really in the rules that he had to be chaotic and cruel? Obviously Cad was on his side with this, at least to some extent.

Nanna knew a lot more about Snorre than anybody else here but she was surprised that he bothered to reveal that small truth about himself to relative strangers, especially when that was basically what vikings seemed to be about. Then again, these two probably didn't need to be explicitly told what Snorre thought to guess it. She wasn't there for the last weird thing but she could guess how that went from Snorre's story and just these brief glimpses of Cad and Melkofur.

Melkofur felt another surge of anger, but quickly let it cool. No, there was no point in trying to get an actual fight out of Snorre. It was very obvious that he wouldn't even want to participate in any sort of duel, even to settle a dispute.

"I'm not here to deliver suffering," the blue lion replied carefully. "I am here hoping to finally prove my birthright, as well as find something worthy to bring home to propose." He wanted to throw a jab about how Snorre was somehow already married, but the blue lion wasn't interested in exchanging fighting words; just an explanation.

He was leaning towards finding a fitting trinket, something shiny to give to Tordne to see if she would marry him. A thrall may do some good, but he would prefer a little more experience under his belt before he wrestled with that.

Cad, on the other had, listened intently to this tense exchange. His eyes kept wandering back around to the little will-o-the-wisps, almost wishing it was possible to take one of them home. He wasn't in the mindset to get married, but he knew it would have to happen eventually. He just wanted to go out and have some fun....Snorre was starting to sound more sane the more he hung out with him. "Y-yeah...we can worry about any raids if the Cap'n sees anything good."

Birthright and propose. The two words that caught Snorre's attention when Melkofur deliberately chose not to start a fight but also explain his personal stakes. It wasn't much information but it revealed a lot, and that was pretty obvious in the way Snorre was looking at Melkofur's face- as if he was just recognizing the markings there. Maybe this wasn't the lion to be telling how he'd rather play than work.

And he definitely wasn't going to comment on the 'birthright' thing so he had to go with the comment on marriage. Melkofur was about the same age as him but they had hugely different lives. In the matter of marriage, Snorre was Melkofur's senior. Superior, even. No wife was as good as Creid, but that was something everybody else just had to deal with in their own ways.

"Planning to get married, eh?" he asked, "I get it. Impressing the ladies can be tough. I have daughters, if you don't have your eye on someone yet."
PostPosted: Sat Mar 02, 2019 10:11 pm
Melkofur's eyes narrowed as he looked at Snorre more directly this time. Rather...frustrated that he couldn't seem to do anything about his frustration. "I do, thank you," he replied. He decided not to comment on Snorre offering his daughters to him. Like he would ever want to have him as a father-in-law.

"Now, I will report this issue of these floating lights to the Captain, and I will return with what he would like us to proceed with." The dark blue lion swiveled on his feet, and practically marched away to go find their captain.

Cad watched the exchange in silence, knowing that he didn't want to get in between them. Snorre wouldn't have done anything, but Melkofur may have swiped his head away if the blonde had tried to say anything.

"Er....well..." he said as Melkofur walked off. "Do you wanna see if we can get the lights to do anything else? May be a bit of knowledge to take back with us if they keep hanging around." He actually wanted to ask about these daughters of his, but it probably wasn't a good time to stick his face into that loaded question. Cadwgan was feeling comfortable with Snorre, but he also didn't want to impose.

Nanna was snickering at Snorre's feet as she watched the exchange between them. She couldn't imagine Creid liking her husband's sudden participation in the matchmaking but then again, he hadn't offered any specific daughter. He'd have fun trying to find Verdandi if Melkofur had shown interest, never mind getting her to agree. And that's what he'd have to do to overrule his wife.

Snorre had the good sense to not laugh until Melkofur was out of earshot (probably). He looked back to Cad with a smile, looking more lively than he had on this whole trip so far.

"Yeah," he said, "If we can't touch them with our paws, maybe a stick would work. They look like fire, maybe that's a way to catch them.."

With the Captain on the way, their fun had a time limit.. but he was pretty sure he'd be able to make the most of it with Cad here.
