Kadaj wasn't one to ignore the summons of his own children, so when word reached him of Ger's intentions to see speak to him again after so many years of silence... the older male felt overcome with joy and stern a sense of duty to answer the call. Duty to his family and to his pride, he would see her again to find out why she was calling for him after all this time, after so many years of worry and sadness. The red male was unaware of anything Ger might have needed to say, or was going to say... he only knew that deep down inside seeing her would do him a world of good. He was a father after all, and he loved every one of his cubs, regardless of how old they had become.
Tiah begged to come with him so she could see her pale sibling again, but Kadaj insisted she stay home - she was fat with cubs after all and travailing in her condition wasn't the best idea. So, after a lot of firm insisting Tiah agreed to stay behind and rest, leaving Kadaj to fill her place with another familiar face.
Sia.
They hadn't really talked after the nasty falling out the two had weeks ago, still, he knew if he was going to trust anyone with the task of traveling to see his long lost daughter it would be her. She was after all... his best friend. Together or not, he needed her more than she could possibly fathom. So he had requested she join him on the journey, not really knowing what to expect from any of the females in his life. The poor idiot was so tired of feeling helpless when it came to this sort of thing. Still, he would try his best and hope that come sunrise she would show up and join him.
They needed to head out as soon as possible.

Dawn was always nice at first until all the memories and emotions started to flood back in. Sia had been awake before the sun (which had become something of a trend ever since Kadaj had--since Sia had broken up with Kadaj). She'd spent extra time tending to her hair and accessories as usual, but try as she might she couldn't get anything to look right. She'd tried the gold bangles, then the cuffs, then the hair pin, then two hair pins, then a cactus flower (which she found had stupidly closed overnight, and by then it was too late to pick a fresh one). So now there she was, staring at her naked shadow on the wall. Blank. Bare. She took in a breath and stood tall, holding herself like a queen. But then her gaze hardened. Her head dipped. Her posture fell. She sneered. Sia pushed away and skulked out of her den.
After some time of walking, the lioness cast her eyes to the horizon. The sun was just beginning to peek. She was right on time, dammit. She hadn't wanted to be too punctual, but now she was almost at the meeting place. Of course it was a given that she would go anywhere or do anything Kadaj asked her, but he didn't need to know that! Ugh. Whatever...it's not like he could assume she had rushed out to meet him or anything. Not that it mattered. She didn't care anymore, and neither did he.
"I'm done with you," Kadaj's voice echoed in her mind. Sia felt a cold pit in her stomach. She caught herself before she came apart and stood tall, feigning nonchalance. She rounded a dusty outcropping and saw Kadaj ahead, his eyes to the horizon. She'd pretend she wasn't happy to see him, pretend that the first beams of morning sunlight that played against his clay fur and icy eyes didn't send her head and heart swaying, that he didn't look like the most perfect and beautiful rock--her rock.
Only when Sia was close enough that her own fur was striped with first light did she finally call out, "Hey." No nonsense. She would mask it all. "So what now? Which way?" she asked, biting back a yawn. Fake, of course.

Kadaj had very little time to think about his strained relationship with Sia or where they even stood as friends, the second she showed he would insist they head out, so without much else being said the two did. The travel would be a long one, but it had to be done. He would not ignore an invitation from his own child. The sudden contact after so many years felt dire.
* * *
Along the way Kadaj would explain how Tiah and Gur's mother left as quickly as she came, taking with her most of the cubs the two shared. Tiah was the only cub he was able to keep, because when she left she did so in the dead of night... without warning or a goodbye. So all of the years Kadaj had spent separated from his own blood, it was not by choice, not by his own choice at least.
Maybe that's what drove him to see Gur after all this time. Maybe that's why this meant so much to him.
As the two travailed they stopped at a silver shore kissed by ocean waves. The place was so unfamiliar and strange, yet he was told she would be here waiting for him. So, with a loud voice he called out, Sia beside him.
"Gur?" His heart sink deep into his chest. Would she show up? Was he at the right place? The large male was starting to worry. If he and Sia were still on good terms he would have turned to her for comfort, yet he knew he couldn't right now. Not with how things were. So instead he stood in silence, hoping his daughter would show her face. A face he longed to see again.

At first Kadaj couldn't believe his eyes, Gur had grown so much, it was shocking to him, even though she shared a birthday with her sister Tiah. For some reason... at last in his mind he could only envision her as a cub. Maybe it was because that was the lion's last memory of her, the only thing Kadaj really had to hold onto after all of these years. He could forgive her being confused, in truth he was surprised the lioness even reached out to them. No matter what happened here the large male was very thankful to see her doing so well. Sia must have been confused, Gur looked nothing like him.
"Gur--" His pale eyes narrowed as his estranged daughter spoke. Her questions came back to back, leaving very little room for him to respond. So he waited until Gur was done, eyeing over Sia with a light smile. Things felt so tense.
"Tiah couldn't make it." His voice lowered, "--she is with cubs and was in no state for travel. So I came in her place, with Sia of course." A failed introduction, Kadaj was all over the place emotionally.
"Sia is... a friend." Though he did take a second to correct himself. The blue eyed lion didn't need to upset the brown female more than he already had. The relationship the two shared was on thin ice right now.
"Oh--" What was this? His eyes narrowed as the sight of a small cub caught his attention. "You had cubs? Both of you..." The large male swore under hushed breath, it was hard not to feel frustrated, the irony was really too much. Maybe he would just die here. "How many did you have?" He would have asked to see them all... but the lion knew it wouldn't be possible, not now at least.
"Ivee, huh? That's an odd name. Why her?" The messages shared between the sisters had not been disclosed to their confused father, so why any of this was happening was beyond him. The lion felt completely uncomfortable, this could be easily seen. He wanted to turn to Sia for guidance, but...
"She looks more like me and less like you. Sure she isn't mine?" A bad joke instead. Kadaj was really... really bad at this.

The back-and-forth exchanges between father and daughter were awkward and strangely sweet at the same time, but only at first. As the conversation progressed, Sia could feel her insides begin to burn. She could see things taking a turn, could recognize the tell-tale signs of Kadaj beginning to spiral. It was only a matter of time before everything went completely south. It wouldn't take much. Kadaj was already fragile, and Sia knew she wasn't helping matters. But what could she do? She was just a 'friend'. Besides, even if she could be a comfort, she couldn't prevent the inevitable.
Sia couldn't help but look down her nose at the other female. She tried to mask it, but her efforts were mostly focused on not snapping at her ex (which was proving difficult). She offered no introduction, not even an incline of her head. She tried not to watch the dusty red cub wriggling innocently at the blue lioness's feet.
Her ears moved at the change in pitch in Kadaj's voice. He was confused as to why Gur had brought only one of her cubs along, let alone any cub to begin with. But Sia knew. Tiah had told her in confidence. They were to take the cub. It wasn't wanted. She felt her throat tighten at the idea of raising cubs. Here was a lioness who had produced offspring, yet she was casting one off. It made little sense to her. Sia saw a phantom of herself mirrored in that moment, except with every cub she might produce wriggling at her feet, waiting at some lonely border. She could see herself somewhere far away, sending the cubs away, leaving them someplace, leaving the Outlands, leaving Kadaj, leaving... She swallowed and glared.
"Kadaj, really?" Sia snipped at the lion's poor attempt at a joke. Not only was it badly timed, but the idea of him having cubs with random other females sent her bristling. And yet the idea of herself having cubs was also terrible. She felt cold. She didn't want to be here anymore. She kept catching the cub wriggling in the corner of her eye, wriggling, wriggling...

A hollow sigh left Sia's lips as she listened to Kadaj question his daughter. She tried to tune out his pain, tried to channel her emotions into anger. When glaring over her ex's shoulder didn't work, she tried to turn off everything altogether. She didn't want to listen anymore. There was no use dragging it out. If she could help get it all over with quickly, she would. It was enough already. Enough.
"Maybe she doesn't want it because it's just one cub too many," Sia jeered through a curled lip. "Or maybe she doesn't like how it looks." While she felt a sense of relief when Kadaj moved in front of her, blocking her from seeing the little squirmy thing at Gur's feet, it didn't stop the hot anger from rising in her throat and filling her eyes.
"It doesn't matter. There's nothing to be explained. She doesn't want it, so let's just take it and go. Tiah will raise it better besides," Sia said.
Would Kadaj fight his own daughter? Would he hurt her? Would Sia have to stop him? Or would he simply break down? She didn't know what to expect. But whatever happened, she'd do what she could to alleviate the outcome. Still, the sooner they ended this and started for home, the better.
The sand...was the sand too hot for--? Ugh...
