It was a couple nights later that Koril’s trip into the forest came full circle. He finally decided that his fill of the forest had been had, and he was now packing up to leave. A few creatures more friendly than the kehtra were seen and inspected and observed and noted, leaving the hybrid satisfied with his findings.
Flana was off playing in a shallow pool of water while Koril made sure to leave the campsite almost exactly as he had found it. A familiar snarl echoed, followed by an equally familiar hiss. “Not again!” Koril whined out loud as he jumped to his feet and ran for the noise. “Flana! Stay away from it!” He burst through the tall ferns and stumbled right over the angry kehtra confronting his zanteer. A weight suddenly dropped onto his upper body, keeping him pinned under the water, and his mind flew into a panic. He couldn’t breathe!
Claws dug into his back when the weight shifted, the kehtra trying to keep hold when Flana tackled it. Koril could turn and breathe now though! Spinning to sit up, he shrieked out at the sight of the kehtra swiping at his zanteer and swung out his whip without thinking. The rope looped around the kehtra’s neck, and he gave it a sharp yank…
A cloud seemed to hang over Koril’s head when he finally left the cover of those woods that night. All he could see was the lifeless and still body. He had only been trying to get the thing off of Flana. He had underestimated his strength. In addition, the cuts on his back were throbbing and Flana was limping along next to him. He had been quite out of his league with those creatures. Three interactions, and he had lost every time. This last encounter was the worst loss though. For Koril, despite getting himself and Flana out of there in relatively one piece, the battle had been a loss in every way, shape, and form. He was hurt, Flana was hurt, and a kehtra had died. Where was any victory in that?
