Once Ebbe had finally gotten Delphi out of the sun and into the cool, shady interior of his den, she had all but passed out. The journey from the collapsed mound to the cold redstone floor had been a blur of pulsing pain and mini black-outs. She could recall a bit of Ebbe's questions and, eventually, a lioness that came by to suss out what she could of her injuries. What came of it, she had no idea. The moment she felt safe she simply let the darkness claim her.

By the time she woke, her regrets were tenfold.

Not only did the pain remain in her side and back leg but now it belonged to a body that had lost the numbing affects of its adrenaline. Every inch of her ached when she so much as thought about moving and a stiffness was settling into her limbs.

How long had she been asleep?

With a soft groan, she shifted her head and looked to the mouth of the den entrance. It was all but impossible to tell the time from her position. Instead, she shifted her pale eyes around and tried to find a sign, any sign, of someone closeby.

Ebbe was never a good sleeper. Having a stranger, well...another being, in his den made the act even more difficult. Nightmares usually plagued the mind of the other, events that had happened in the past always rearing its ugly face in the dreamworld.

Claws shifted into the dirt of his den as a sneer rose to his facial feature. His ear flickered, from the dream maybe? No. Just the light groan from Delphi caused an eye to crack open, the normally white around the orange holding a slight pinkish color. A clear sign of lack of rest.

He maneuvered his feet under him, lifting up as he slowly made his way over to her. "You're awake." His voice was low, even with lack of sleep it didn't crack, as some would when they had recently awoken. "You've been touch and go for the past day." We were worried about you, he added silently.

"How do you feel." Once again, what should have been a normal question was a statement from the Claw. Personal skills were not his forte.

It took a moment for Delphi's eyes to focus on the figure that lumbered toward her but once they did she found an odd sense of peace at the sight of him. Ebbe wasn't the most empathetic lion around but she knew here, at least, she was safer than anywhere else she could be in the pride.

"Like death," her scratchy voice croaked, making her all too aware of how thirsty she was. The raw tissue was added to her checklist of regrets but she couldn't find it in her to wish she hadn't done what she did. Though her memory of the last day or more was quite spotty, she knew that the cub had walked away from the accident unscathed - and that Ebbe himself had lumbered under her weight to bring her to safety.

"You don't look much better," as she spoke, she tried to smirk at him, but it was half-hearted. Everything ached. Everything throbbed. The smirk faded to a grimace as the energy of staying upbeat sapped from her and she simply let her head loll to the side where it lay against the redstone floor.

"Ancestors take me," she murmured, "I hope someone gave that brat an earful."

"Well. You aren't dead." He stated. "But good to know the feeling is there. You aren't suppose to move for a while," what 'a while' classified as, Ebbe didn't know. He was by no means a healer, nor was he some nurse lion. He'd have to get the one who had given those instructions to him to come back with a more defined answer, or, as Ebbe would take it, have them take her off his paws.

"I am sure you would look the same if you were in my situation." He said bluntly. "I'm not use to having another in my den." It had been awhile since he had shared quarters with a female. Although in the roguelands, everyone slept under the stars, Ebbe had grown quite accustomed to his personal space.

The grimace caught him off guard. He looked over to the pile of herbs left behind in the corner. Moving away from the female, he went to grab a few leaves, before returning to Delphi. "Here." He probably should have gotten her water, but the thought of carrying it back did not please the Claw. He could opt to carry her again, but now that she was coherent, he didn't foresee that going well either.

If she walked on her own, he'd probably get reamed by the healer. That one seemed like the best option.

"She is Katiti's ward. I am sure her birds have told her what happened, and she will be rightfully disciplined." It was not Ebbe's place to do that, only the bright red female if she chose to.

"Think you can stand?" A soft nudge to her shoulder followed his question. Perhaps the only time Ebbe had physically touched the female, save for him carrying her back.

Fair enough, she thought. If Katiti was anything like her father claimed (and she had seen enough of her thus far to suspect he wasn't embellishing his misfortunes too much) then that cub was more than a little sorry for getting them into this fine mess.

"No," she answered, grumpily. She wasn't supposed to move, he'd said, but he also seemed aware that she was going to die of thirst if she didn't get water in her soon. The soft nudge was enough to convince her that she needed to be proactive if she wanted to heal quickly and with a sigh, she contradicted herself by putting a little weight on her paws.

By the ancestors, it hurt.

A grimace flashed across her face until she picked her back foot off of the ground and put her weight on the remaining three paws. It didn't hurt quite as badly as whatever she had done to that foot in the accident but her bones protested every millimeter she rose above the den's floor. The surge of pain, probably in combination with the lack of water, made her immediately light-headed. She did her best to lean towards him, hoping his bulkier weight would catch her lest she pass back out into a heap on the floor.

sorry for the double quote, realized I mistyped a rank.

Ebbe watched carefully as she lifted herself up. The little sway she did was enough to bring more concern to his features. He shook his head, more to himself than anything.

This is not going to work. He thought to himself. A small, frustrated sigh left his lips as he braced himself as she leaned against him.

"Lay back down." He ordered, his tone gruff. He felt his own legs moving to curl under him, as if to help her. "I don't need you passing out on the way to the water source." He looked around his den. He wasn't going to carry her. So that left the first choice. He would just need to bring her back some of the cool liquid.

The faster you do it, the quicker she will go back to her own den. He concluded.

The question was, what could he use? There was nothing in his den that would be of use. He'd have to stop and find something alone the way - perhaps the Soul or Mind had some sort of hollowed item he could use.

"I'll be right back. Do not move."

Delphi would have rolled her eyes if she had been able to muster the energy to waste on it but instead she just blew an annoyed harumph from her jowls and let herself lower slowly back to the floor, using the prop of his thick body for a brace. The last few inches she gave up and let herself collapse, ungracefully, in the same heap she had been huddled in since he brought her back.

"Stand, sit, move, stay," her voice was low and grumbly, laced thoroughly with a tone of irritation. Everything hurt, she was thirsty, and Ebbe was being the same incredible grouch he always was.

She let her eyes slide shut and rolled carefully onto her side to stop the faint sparkles that dotted her vision and singalled a spell of lightheaded discomfort. Even such a minute attempt at motion had caused enough harm that she mostly just wanted to go back to sleep already. The only answer he earned with his command was a grunt of something that could have been agreement but was probably just indifference. If she had felt better, she would have pointed out how unlikely it was that she could go anywhere but as it was, she just relaxed like a shadow stretched across his dusty den floor.

Ebbe heard her remark, but chose to not say anything. It wouldn't help if he argued.

He left the den in haste, not bothering to look back towards his apprentice.

---

Ebbe hadn't been out too long. He carried as small pouch around his neck, something for him to take for his inability to sleep later, and in his maw a hollowed out contraption he was carrying some water in. It wasn't a lot, but hopefully it was enough to satiate Delphi's thirst, or at least give her a little bit more strength to make the journey to the water source herself.

He placed the bowl down carefully, trying to preserve as much water in it was possible. He glanced at the still form. Maybe she went back to sleep? Letting her rest was something the male should have done, but instead, he found himself nearing her again, nudging her shoulder lightly to rouse her.

"Water's here." He said with a huff. Bedside manners were not his forte.

He rounded back to the bowl, lifting it between his teeth and bringing it near her head. That way, she would not need to move much. Conserve her energy, so when she was fully awake she would be able to stand a bit better.

"Drink er...slowly." Damnit. Maybe he could get Shetani to watch her. She was a teacher after all. She had so much more patience than he did.

What little sleep the apprentice had been able to find was fitful and uneasy; if she had been stronger she would have been tossing and turning uncomfortably on the floor of his den. Of course, if she had been stronger she wouldn't have been there at all.

The sound of his feet and the soft clunk of the bowl on the ground roused her well before his voice ever reach her dark ears but she did not bother to crack her pale eyes open to look at him until he finally spoke to her again. It was a peculiar sight, watching him try to set the bowl so gingerly - hell, anything that Ebbe tried to do carefully just seemed so damnably out of place. If she'd had the strength she would have smiled at him. As it was, the corner of her maw lifted just-so and she raised her head the distance required to lap at the water.

"Thank the ancestors," she mumbled as the first drops trickled down her dry and aching throat. She lapped until it hurt too much to hold her head up and let relaxed back into the stone with the cool liquid settling low in her belly. "And you too, I guess."

The words were meant to be playful but lacked her usual oomph - belatedly, she realized he might not get her playfulness if she didn't spell it out for him in the sands.

"I appreciate the effort but shouldn't you be.. doing something?"

Ebbe's ears pinned back at her question.

The simple answer. Yes.

He should be out in the fields, observing the unbranded, looking at their potential. Watching the Shields and the Scars duel, and advising his Claws what to do. The problem with Ebbe while he had a strong sense of duty to the pride, he also was ridden with the guilt that had if he had been a few gaits faster, he would have been the one under the rubble. He could handle himself getting injured, not others in the pride.

His eyes narrowed, contemplating how he should answer. He needed to get back to work. He could only stay away for so long.

But, now that Delphi was awake, and seemingly out of the woods, his life could get back to normal.

"I should." He finally answered. "And since you are on the mend, you can spend the rest of the time of your healing with someone who has more luxury with time." He felt his nose twitching. He would dare not ask one of his own. Perhaps one of Kat's wards, or the Vessels could take her.

"I'll make sure they come retrieve you." Then, he could really get his den back, and his life on the old track again.

He didn't wait around anymore. Now that she had her water, she could rest and Ebbe could go get others to move her (whether assisting her, or carrying out of his den).
