Koril’s trial was not over when the first kehtra left. He was still lying on the branch to take inventory of his body’s condition while Flana barked and ran after the creature that had tried to harm her earthling. “Flana! Stop!” Koril yelled, groaning as he pushed himself upright. He was going to feel all of that fall tomorrow.
“Flana!” The hybrid slid down the rest of the tree as fast as he could, running the moment he hit the ground. He could hear his zanteer’s growl mingling with a sharp hissing. He pulled his whip loose, prepared to defend his best friend.
He leapt over a fallen log, gasping when he saw the pair wrestling. Flana’s yellow fur was getting stained with blood, but she wasn’t giving up at all. The kehtra looked quite done over as well. Koril swung his whip around, hoping the sound of the sharp snap would startle the kehtra away.
The kehtra was indeed startled, but, rather than running, it turned to charge Koril.
He did not want to use the whip… He had never liked using it very much. It was fine for friendly sparring, but to actually use on a creature?
His indecision left him standing still for too long, and the rough impact sent Koril onto his back with the air knocked out of him. Arms lifting to protect himself, the kehtra was thrown off course during a second charge by Flana coming to Koril’s aid.
With Flana and Koril together now, the kehtra hissed and bolted up the tree to return to its family.
Koril sat on his rear, gasping for air while patting Flana’s head. “I don’t think we won any of that,” he said with a sigh before flopping onto his back again to rest.
