Koril wasn’t sure how he had gotten into his current predicament, but here he was. He kept creeping out further on the thinning limb to attempt escape. At the thicker end of the branch crouched a kehtra, hissing and swiping at the air. Below on the ground, Flana yowled and circled in frustration, unable to climb the tree herself.
Actually, Koril knew exactly how he had gotten into this mess. By no means intentional, Koril had decided to climb and gather a bit of fruit during his exploration of the northern forest. At the same time, he hoped to get a closer look at the kehtra family he saw a few trees over. He had perched himself onto a branch while the little clan moved about. Their direction suddenly shifted though, and Koril was delighted to see them headed toward him. He would get really close now!
The family was still over by a couple trees when one noticed Koril watching them. It let out a hoot of surprise and jumped to the offensive, charging at its suspected attacker.
Koril had let out a yelp of his own and nearly leapt from his branch, but it was really a long way to the ground and the kehtra was closing fast. It was either fight and risk it or drop and most likely break his legs.
He really needed to stop climbing trees…
His hand went to his whip, but there was no way he could swing it well enough in this tangle of branches. Running it was! The kehtra was already leaping for his branch though. Koril darted around the trunk and hurried to clamber downward and out in the hopes that the thinner branches would let him move faster. Instead, he was clutching hard to the thin branch as it wobbled while he reached for another branch to start swinging down.
The kehtra charged, Koril screamed, and both went tumbling as the branch snapped. The kehtra quickly caught another branch, but it took a few hits for Koril to smack into one that would hold him. Groaning from the impact, he peeked up to see the kehtra was apparently satisfied with the result and was leaving.
Sighing, Koril shifted to sprawl out along the branch and rest. That had sucked.
