User ImageThe day had been a hot, long one, but finally the sun was settling low in the sky providing some relief to the Stormborn lands. The sea breeze had picked up a bit, helping to cool the ground as well as the air so tender paw pads still new to the world wouldn't burn up too badly. Eydis stood at the mouth of her den with her gaggle of cubs behind her and stared out at the sky, contemplating if it was time. She had done some asking around once she realized she was pregnant and had a pretty good idea of what direction to head in to find the Nchi'mahadhi. It would be a journey to be certain especially with a group of young cubs, but it had to be done.

"Come, children," she said with a flick of her tail, stepping out of the den. They were old enough now that they'd begun to explore on their own, but Eydis had been sure to keep them close to home. She didn't want them getting to know this place very well since they would be leaving. Perhaps some day they would return when they were older, but that wouldn't be for many months yet.

Quick to follow her mother's feet, Skadi pounced out of the den, an eager look in her eyes. Her mother had been prepping them for this day since they were born, talking of leaving this place to find their father. She was more than excited, chomping at the bit to go even though she had been warned it was far. The plan was to walk during the night time and sleep during the day, both to preserve energy and to keep her and her siblings from roasting in the blazing heat.

"Come on!" she said to her siblings, looking over her shoulder at the group that was following their mother.

It wasn't exactly a mystery to the little cub laying at the back of the cool den that something was about to change. There had been talk since she had been born of their leaving, a journey that was to come to search out and find their father, the male that had disappeared on their mother. So it wasn't exactly a shock to Hjǫrdís at all when the time finally arrived for them to leave and really she was only feigning at being asleep. At the beckon she stood up simply and wandered towards the entrance after her siblings, her pale eyes looking up at her mother curiously in silence. Skadi beside her seemed to be excited about leaving, but while she wasn't afraid of leaving the dark cub was more reserved about leaving the den she had been born in to run off on an adventure.

Not that she had a say in the matter.

"Will the trek be long mother?" She asked, tail swishing slowly behind her as she thought of all the things that might happen on the road to finding their father. There were quite a few of them and their mother would have to feed all of them at once, by herself. If she had been just a bit larger maybe she could have helped, but she was smart enough to know that it was out of the question for her to do so. Not even a rabbit was slow enough that she might be able to grab them. But Hjǫrdís trusted her mother completely, she didn't know any other way to be of course.

What really had caught her curiosity was her father. Was he anything like her mother and why exactly had he left them all alone? In her young mind the actualities weren't there, more like wild fantasies of what he could be off doing in the world but Hjǫrdís didn't care. They were going to all go off and find him and she was set upon seeing what was out there in the world and what might be different than what she had always known.

"Skadi, do you think father's nice?" She turned her attention towards her sister who's colors resembled her own so closely, colors that seemed to speak to their father given their mother's pale fur. "I hope he's excited to see us once we get there."

As the cubs began to follow her out of the den, Eydis looked back to ensure she had them all. It was quite the gaggle, to be sure, and she looked with pride on the little females that outnumbered their single brother five to one. She didn't love her son any less than her daughters, but to see so many strong little ladies in the making made her heart swell. She'd be sure to teach her son not to love and leave a female, too. Lijen was going to be in for a surprise to be sure.

"Yes, Hjǫrdís, it will be long," she said, not bothering to sugar coat what was in store for them. "But you are all strong and determined little beasts and you'll do just fine." She was worried that something might go wrong, of course, but she wasn't going to let that show. She was a warrior on a mission and she'd see it through.

"Come now. We need to walk all night long." They'd rest here and there, of course, but the majority of the night she wanted them moving. Then in the wee hours of the morning the cubs could sleep and she could hunt as they needed.

Skadi turned as her teal sister finally emerged from the den, grinning at her sister. Although she had a marking twin with one of their lighter siblings, she loved how dark she and Hjǫrdís were. Their mother was all brown so it was pretty obvious who they took after and Skadi was excited to see just how much they looked like their father.

"I dunno! He must be nice enough for Mama to wanna go live with him in his pride," she said, bouncing after Eydis' paws as the lioness began to walk. "But not nice enough to stay here with us. Maybe he's in the middle!"

Ignoring the hunger that had been tugging at her own belly for the past few days, something that she was becoming used to being life in general really, Hjǫrdís followed along behind her mother dutifully and took complete comfort in knowing that her mother was the strongest female ever. Stronger apparently than their father who'd left them, as Skadi pointed out, which bothered her that they were even going to find him. Hopefully their mother smacked him around and made him regret it. She'd sit on him and help her mom if she had to, she was strong!

Well... not, but she would try to be in that moment! If only she didn't feel so blasted hungry.

As they moved she looked about at the last parts of the pride she had been born in, the last bits that she would see of it even if it was in the dark. Hjǫrdís planned to hold onto what she saw for as long as she could, for it had been all that she'd known until that moment and maybe there was something better out there, but at least she didn't have to wonder that she would be with her family and safe. There were others with even less than she, that had lost and would lose more than simply never knowing their father or leaving one pride for another.

"If he's somewhere in the middle, that wouldn't be so bad." Hjǫrdís grinned over at Skadi despite how worn out she felt and turned her head so that she no longer looked at the rest of the pride about her, looking towards the future she'd have with her sisters and brother, with her father? "I still think mom should slap him around as hard as she can for leaving her, for leaving us."

Making sure she didn't pace too closely to her mother, not wanting to get under her feet as her own beloved sister was doing, the little teal lioness made certain to keep the pace, even being ahead of her other siblings as she prepared herself for what they would see in the future, where they were going. She was excited and more than a little worried about the trip, but their mother was strong and they took after her, right? So they'd all be strong alongside her and find their new home in one group.

She just hoped a bit that their mother knew the way exactly.

Skadi hopped from her mother's side to her sister's, bumping up against Hjǫrdís as they walked through the pride. She hadn't thought about their father not being present until Eydis had mentioned that they'd be going to live with him soon, but now that she knew they did indeed have a sire she was excited to see what he'd be like. He must have been pretty special for their mother to hang around him long enough to have cubs, after all!

"Maybe he's a warrior," she said as they walked, eyes wide with wonder. Even though they were only a few months old she already knew the honor and pride of being a Reaver or a Captain. They were going to a pride that didn't have those ranks but maybe he was one of the guards or soldiers that protected their new home. "And he has a duty to his pride so he stayed there instead of coming here!"

Eydis listened to her children speculate what might happen or why Lijen hadn't stayed, a little smirk on her face. Oh, he wasn't a warrior by any means, but he was cunning and had drawn her in with his charm. There were other ways than strength to win a lady over and he had done so in record time with Eydis, and now she was going to ensure he paid the 'price' for his silver-tongued ways.

"Oh, don't worry," she said as she glanced behind her to look at her two teal daughters. "Your father will be quite stunned to see us, I'm sure. That will be punishment enough for his fleeing."

Thoughts tumbled around in her head as Hjǫrdís batted at her sister's side for bumping into her, what if their father was a brave and strong warrior? What if he had the great honor of defending his pride against invaders or outsiders that might wish to cripple it from the inside? What if he were a great leader?

Surely their mother's eyes would have been drawn to him if he was any of those things, for she was one of the strongest lionesses in their pride after all! No one would ever be able to tell Hjǫrdís otherwise and if they even so attempted she would eat them alive, rib by perfidious rib. But if he were any of those things, why would her mother accuse him of 'fleeing'? That itself left a sort of bitter taste in her already hungry mouth and the little teal cub rolled her eyes at her own daydreams.

"Whatever he is, still needs a slap across his snout for leaving us, mom's kind for even giving him the time of day to take us there. I wonder what living in that new pride will be like though... what the rules are and how lions live." All that Hjǫrdís had ever known was the Stormborn and they were the strongest to her. By both her pale eyes she would make it known that she and her sisters were strong and worthy in this new pride, even if she had to work extra hard to do so. Flexing her claws into the dirt as she walked, the little one let her eyes flash upwards towards her mother, a grin crossing her muzzle darkly. "Well punishment will be many paws then. No one leaves my mother!"

With those brave words she bound forward just a bit and batted playfully at Skadi's tail as she passed, trying to draw her sister into a game of tag as they went, something to keep their spirits up.
