The First Speaker

User Image

Meet the First Speaker.

Anyone may enter for him, whether they have a thousand lions born of the storm or none, but make sure you thoroughly understand his position as he is a high ranking individual in the pride and will require activity. He will be required to help train aspiring Lawspeakers, help with ceremonies when called upon, and so on (I'm probably forgetting something, but the winner and I can talk about that later on).

It should go without saying that this individual is not able to leave the pride.

To win him all you have to do is read the below and get started!

Climb that ladder!
Do you understand and accept the IC responsibilities that come with being a first speaker? Yep!
Name: Mstivoj (Mst meaning vengeance and voj meaning warrior)
Brief Personality:
To those he does not know well, Mstivoj will appear as a serious and grumpy lion. He has little patience for flattery and bribery or anyone trying to rise through ranks quickly without putting in the effort. However he will work patiently with anyone who has a genuine interest in learning. When he is around those he genuinely cares about, he has no problem sharing his softer side.

Describe how he got to his position.
A mix between luck and determination. Mstivoj was born to a thrall mother and an unknown father. From an early age he was told that he would never amount to anything and he would live and die as a thrall. The reaver who owned him would have his offspring use Mstivoj as their punching bag. This taught Mstivoj how to endure a beating. His life changed when he was given to a lawspeaker as a gift. Mstivoj was fascinated by everything the lawspeaker did or said. The lawspeaker was a kinder lion than his original master and Mstivoj did everything he could to impress his new master. When it was time for the Breytast Vindar, Mstivoj was encouraged to challenge a freeborn by the lawspeaker. He would train in his free time. When it was time for the challenge, he unfortunately did not win his fight. Part of him wanted to give up and accept that he would always be a thrall, but the lawspeaker encouraged him to give it another go once it was time to participate in Breytast Vindar again. His second attempt was much more impressive. He fought one of the offspring from the reaver who originally owned him and won. Mstivoj was not content with just gaining his freedom. As he grew older he worked toward rising in ranks eventually becoming a captain. He remained close friends with the lawspeaker that had taught him so much. When the lawspeaker who had been apart of his life for so long passed away, Mstivoj decided to retire from being a captain and become a lawspeaker. When he was eventually voted to become the first speaker, he was completely shocked and humbled by the event.

Climb that ladder!
Do you understand and accept the IC responsibilities that come with being a first speaker? Yarp
Name: Tyr
Brief Personality: Tyr is a hard-nosed, by the book kind of guy. His mental fortitude is his greatest strength and he enjoys his work because it keeps his mind sharp. His greatest passion in life is to ensure the prosperity of his pride and, while his outlook on how to go about doing that has changed, his passion for living and seeing the Stormborn remain a strong, united pride has never wavered.
Describe how he got to his position. Tyr grew up as many Stormborn did: with his dreams set on becoming a Reaver and possibly even a Captain. His father was a decent Reaver although he didn't have the mind to lead a band on his own. His mother, a sharp-witted den-keeping saltwife, nurtured Tyr's mind where his father nurtured his physical strength and skills. The little cub grew quickly in both mind and body and he joined his father and his Reaver friends as soon as he could, securing his position as a Reaver as well.

He made a few trips with his father in his youth, but once he finished growing into his mane he decided to join his own band of Reavers. The Captain wasn't too pleased with the young, bright lion joining the band and feared that he would one day battle him for the right to lead. He ended up plotting to have Tyr die tragically in an accident while out in the rogue lands by stirring up a pack of hyenas. The plan almost worked, but the Reavers came to Tyr's rescue and, as a group, killed the Captain for his wicked deed. They wished to make Tyr their new Captain, but the young male was so badly injured he knew he'd be of no use out on Vikings. He retired his title and returned to being a Freeborn which ate away at him as he healed.

His mother was the one to suggest picking up a tutor to become a Lawspeaker. With his mind he would surely benefit the pride and make him and his family proud. Taking her words to heart, Tyr began to study the ways of the Lawspeakers and soon found himself among their ranks. He once again found himself a favored member of the small group of lions and, once the old First Speaker retired, he was nominated for the position. He couldn't turn down the offer this time, not when he knew there was so much he could do to ensure the Stormborn stayed true to their laws and each other.

Climb that ladder!
Do you understand and accept the IC responsibilities that come with being a first speaker? Yes
Name: Thørn
Brief Personality:
Logic rules over everything, emotion has its uses, but in the grand scheme of things it can cause quite a few problems. Thusly, the lion isn't one who is devoid of emotion, but he is one who keeps it contained. When he's working he has no room for things such as compassion and empathy, he seeks cold, hard facts. He's well known for being the pinnacle of neutrality and very rarely intervenes in trivial disputes - it's a very important day if this lion takes the stand and makes his voice heard in the most absolute sense.

He never speaks without reason and as a consequence, it would be wise to listen.

Describe how he got to his position.
Sheer stubborness - he'd begun as a freeborn and though he had desired greater things he had never quite caught the eye of the elder speakers. They had chosen others, those who were more appropriate than he in their eyes and as such, had been cast to the side. This had never deterred him though and throughout their lessons he had simply eavesdropped and gathered up the very basic knowledge that they deemed necessary to bestow on their charges.

...What they couldn't teach, he explored on his own.

Then the Breytast came and it was in these moments that he challenged those who had questioned his capabilities. Much to the surprise of those who stood to watch this 'fiasco', he bested his opponent with superior knowledge and rose to the rank of Lawspeaker in a less than traditional sense. This was met with some murmurs of dissatisfaction, but this was only the beginning on this particular lions rise to power.

It was during this time that he established himself, with his crowning achievement being the defence of one accused of a crime they did not commit. A bitter war between families had erupted, leaving many injured and far too many untruths. While violence was not something to be shunned within the pride, the lack of finesse in several 'murders' had resulted in all being drawn to the Warlord. However, with facts failing to line up Thørn put it to the Warlord (against the wishes of his peers), that perhaps they should approach this with a more critical eye.

...A trial as it were; not a popularity contest. It would be guided by facts and evidence, rather than personality, and after everything had been presented the Warlord would be capable of making a fair decision rather than one that any could accuse of bias. Much to everyone's surprise, it was something that was agreed. Thus the trials began, the arguments were made and Thørn presented himself as the defence of the one accused of the worst of the crimes; the most severe of the murders.

For days it was deliberated, argued and disputed until all 'evidence' had been aired and this esteemed Warlord was left to muse over what they had heard. It would be weeks later that judgement would be rendered and Thørn had won; yet he remained modest and simply reinforced that the truly criminal should be convicted, rather than those who were simply unpopular. His natural inclination towards neutrality and fairness, to truth and the word of law provided him with a number of fans.

It was after this that he struck.

Several years after his last Breytast he took the plunge, challenging the elderly male who he believed to have forgotten the purpose of his position. It was a close trial, ritualistic in every respect and by no means easy. The elder understandably had great knowledge and at first it seemed as though he might win, but with change ever present in the Stormborn it seemed that fate ultimately lay at Thørn's side and eventually he succeeded. It was yet again through rather untraditional means (or would it be traditional in the truest sense?) that he took his final step up and this time it wasn't met with quite as much discontent as before.

He'd proven himself, he'd been deliberate in his intentions from the very first moment he'd become a Lawspeaker and they had confidence that he would continue to do so... His overall intentions for the Lawspeakers and the direction in which they should head still remains to be seen though. There are murmurings that nepotism will be discouraged and those who truly desire truth, justice and knowledge, will be encouraged to rise to power...

Curses!
Do you understand and accept the IC responsibilities that come with being a first speaker? YES
Name: Havbris (Ocean Breeze in Norwegian)
Brief Personality:
Careful :: He already made a rash decision in the past when he had been a captain. He isn't ready to repeat that decision.
Quick tempered :: Usually, he's very mild mannered and happy, if somewhat somber. However, anyone who takes a foolish risk or does something life-risking will have quite an earful and a bump to the back of their head.
Limp :: Not quite a personality but he does walk around with a limp. One of his back legs has a large scar and pains him something fierce.
Dutiful :: He will carry out his duty until death. Leaving his captain title, he finds no better way to repay his dead crew than to serve the pride.
Somber :: He gives smiles and laughs but his eyes usually hold sadness. His mistake haunts him continuously.

Describe a time when things went very wrong for him.
The Viking had not gone as was planned. But then, when did anything ever go as planned?

Claws digging into the stone, flecking off bits as it did, Havbris clung for his life. Rain pounded down on him, trying to blind him. Water coursed all around him, attempting to rip him from the stone and submerge him to his death. He couldn’t let go. His crew needed him. He saw every one of them get swept away when the lake above the valley flooded over. It had happened so quickly. So fiercely. But he would not die. If he could scavenge and save just one of them after the rapid water calmed, it would have been worth it. If he could go home to the stormborn and tell their loved ones of his mistake, it would be worth it. He would not die after leading his crew to their deaths. He would live on and repent until he died of old age.

It had been his idea to go into the valley, despite the heavy rain. One of his scouts had informed him of the lake but Havbris foolishly believed they could cross the valley. It would have saved them two days, crossing rather than going around. He had done it before so why not do it again? He knew the way, after all. His stubborn decision had been their ending.

It seemed like hours past. His muscles ached from the strain, holding onto the rock. He wasn’t even sure he had the strength to hoist himself up anymore, he had been so focused on clinging. He nearly let go once as a sharp and splintered tree rammed him in the leg. He was sure it tore flesh; there was no way it didn’t. The sharp agony and pain vibrated through him as he scrambled for a better grip. But finally, after the hours that were mere minutes, the torrents slowed. Slowed just enough to hoist himself off the rock. He leg was a mangled mess. He would need to get that looked at. It would serve him right if he lost the leg. He wanted to sit up and immediately start searching for his crew. But when the captain lifted himself to look around, blackness overtook his vision and his mind.

After plenty of time to consider the entrants that have entered and made me have to think not once, not twice, but thrice times over about who the winner should be I have made a final decision...

Epine de Rose!
Colorist: Pinchmonster
Image: First Speaker

The First Speaker is long overdue and we welcome Thorn into this position with open arms! Since it is so early in the year he will not be safe during the Breytast. This means that Lawspeakers, you have a chance to rank up at the end of 2018 if you choose to pursue this!

For those other entrants I would like you to stand by as in a few moments I'll hold a small raffle to thank you for your patience. <3
