{PRP} After Effects {Kambri x Rinis}

It was the day after the dreadful hatching. Yet another hatching that she'd walked away from without a dragon. That really wasn't what had bothered her the most though. It had been the sheer viciousness of these hatchlings. The aggressive repeated maulings and the death clouded what should have been a happy time.

Rinis had managed to hold it mostly together during the actual hatching. She'd even gone so far to help the green who'd killed a boy get to the healers with some others. Once she'd left the sands though, her walls had simply crumbled. She'd cried most of the night, and hadn't slept very well.

Today she'd stumbled through what chores had been asked of her. The life of a lowly candidate didn't change much. Not like the prestige the new weyrlings were getting. No once she'd finished for the day, she'd gone to find a quiet beach to watch the sun set. She needed time to sort her thoughts. Those young dragons who'd been such terrors on the sands, would, no should be safe to be around now. Right?

Plus she still needed to work through her emotions about the whole situation. And come to terms that she was still in fact a candidate. Rinis was sitting in the warm sand, staring but maybe not truly seeing the spectacular sunset before her. Chaek, her brown firelizard, was perched on her shoulder, cheeping worriedly and reassuringly in her ear.

Kambri had spent most of the day either attending class, completing his duties, or studying his letters. While he hadn't been wholly capable of admitting to his classmates that he came to Western without any knowledge of the written word. Math was something that came easy to him though. In fact, he found himself in more advanced classes for that particular subject. The others? Some were average and others like reading were the lowest. And somehow that still wasn't entirely good enough for him.

As the sun was getting to set over the Weyr, the boy ventured--shirtless--to the beach to enjoy the amazing few. It helped to reflect over what had occurred the day before at the hatching. His heart still ached with the hole that was left in the place of the hope that had welled in his chest. His wasn't there. Maybe he didn't have one. The spiral down into darker thoughts came easy to the boy, something he tried to work on but it was much harder to control inner self-doubt. Taking a deep breath he grew closer to the beach. His honey eyes focused on the figure of a young woman who sat in the sand with a firelizard on her shoulder. It looked distressed at the state of it's companion.

Kambri frowned and approached, not willing to stand by and watch another suffer. Even if they may be suffering the same internal loss. "Hi." He spoke softly as he approached, not wanting to startle her or the flit. "Mind if I sit next to you?" Kambri asked, not wanting to impose before she allowed him to.

Short sorry.

Chaek twisted around to peer at the new comer. He gave a trill of greeting at the boy. His actions brought a little more awareness back to Rinis. She blinked, it was unclear if it was because her eyes were dry, or if she was trying to hold back tears. "Uh hello. I'm sorry I didn't see you approach." Chaek rubbed his head against her cheek.

"You can sit if you want. Sand's warm." Rinis wasn't sure why he'd picked a spot nearby her in a whole otherwise empty beach. As she became more aware of her surroundings, she did note with amusement his shirtless state. "What have you been doing that you lost your shirt?" She reached a finger up to scratch a proffered eye ridge on the brown firelizard.
