Times were changing, Safura thought as she sat, a few dozen yards away from where the rest of the group had settled for the day. The Abaholi had been replaced with new lions and while Kuhasa had been allowed to remain as the Inselelo, Safura could see the tension in the way he walked that said he wasn't yet comfortable with the change. Well, he wasn't alone. Everyone was making adjustments to the new order of the pride, including Safura herself.
Safura had undergone quite a lot since joining this pride. While it had been her idea (though she let her twin pass it off as her own) to join the Bonelands, she soon found herself alone in the pride with no status or sister. Sauda had vanished after going on a hunt on her own and never returning. This had occurred just before the drought and when the drought hit, Safura had to assume the worst: her sister had died alone on the savanna. The result of her sister's absence had driven Safura to desire the companionship and admiration she had received from her sister in others. She did everything she could to prove that she was a fierce lioness, worthy of attention. When no attention came, she decided to take a different route. Mothers were revered in the pride, so she would court one of the eligible lions in the pride and become one herself. Kuhasa was the one she chose and only time would tell if their copulation attempts had succeeded.
Safura had been so obsessed with her popularity that she bottled everything else down deep inside of her, until she started turning into a bitter creature that she had never wanted to become. It wasn't until she had spoken with another Busisa, a gentle, patient lioness by the name of Ezinothuzi that she realized that she had not succeeded in advancing up into the ranks of the pride, but rather fallen into a place where she could not easily manage to get up again.
"What would Sauda say if she could see me now..." Safura muttered, curling her tail closer to her. She was taking this time to reminisce. To recall all that she had lost and all that she had managed to gain too. She finally allowed herself to mourn her sister's passing, rather than try to cover up her raw emotion with other matters.
Just sitting here isn't helping you feel any better. She told herself with a low growl. Go out and do something useful for your pride. So, heaving herself to her paws, she set out walking further away from her pride, glancing over her shoulder and knowing with certainty that they wouldn't be going anywhere. She could find her way back and when she did, she would come bearing prey. A good hunt always cheered her up.
