Round 1 information:

- The winner of this duel will be guaranteed the rank of 'Corporal'.
- The winner is the lion/ness who rolls the highest number across 5 turns. An extra turn must be rolled by each player to break a tie. [Reminder of rolls: 1 - miss, 2 - bide/glancing attack, 3 - hit]
- Even if you rolled higher than your opponent, if you fail to edit your rolls with an RP response, your character is disqualified.

Move one: Glancing Blow

Mate'moto dug her claws into the sand, getting a feel for the ground she'd be fighting on. She certainly wasn't a stranger to battles, having to go up against her fellow soldiers from time to time to kept their skills strong and their senses sharp.

She recognized the lioness she was facing although she didn't know her name. That seemed to be the case with lots of Firekin since their pride was so large. Still, she knew her opponent was a soldier, and that was all she cared about. This would be like any other battle on the job.

Mat darted forward, making the first move suddenly to hopefully throw off her opponent. It wasn't a head-on attack, though, as she wanted to be able to dodge if need be.

Roll 1: 2, Glancing attack

Though she wasn't a boisterous lioness, Alya made no effort to conceal her desire to climb the ranks. To prove herself. In that regard, 'desire' might not have been the right word. On proving herself, she was intent.

Her weight shifted beneath her paws, her body otherwise still as golden eyes stared down her opponent. The lioness was familiar--the markings and colors and shapes she recognized as being that of a fellow soldier. Had she had more time to think on it, Alya would have berated herself for not studying her fellow soldiers enough to get an idea for what specifically she was up against. There were too many of them, though. To try to memorize specific fighting strategies of individuals would be a lost cause.

There was no need for formalities, here. No introductions. They all knew what they were here to do.

At the sudden movements of the black lioness, Alya's muscles clenched. She remained stone still until Mat closed the distance, moving to the side only at the last moment. When she felt contact at her side--throwing her a bit off balance--a grunt escaped her. Mate'moto. She was fast. Alya would remember that.

Paws skid in the sand as Alya moved to stop her momentum, turning quickly in place in order to lunge at the black lioness, hoping to make contact as she recovered from her own attack. Mat might be quick but Alya was, too.

Move 2: Hit

Mat wasn't surprised when her opponent swiped at her in return. They were soldiers, not guards who tiptoed around situations. They dove in head first regardless of who or what they were fighting. It was important to learn as you fought rather than wasting precious time looking and waiting, after all. From this quick encounter Mat knew she was up against an equal, a lioness a bit her senior but with just as much fire and spirit as any Firekin.

Mat didn't let up. Rather than darting away, she charged forward just as Alya darted, ending up with a glancing swipe to her shoulder as well. She took it, though, to land a full hit against the grey lioness. It was worth it. Her teeth bared in a snarl, she used her voice to add a bit of oomph where her claws couldn't.

Move 2: 3, Hit

Her opponent didn't relent. Alya would expect nothing less from her fellow Firekin. Excitement and reflex drew a snarl from her tensed maw, a noise that was only made louder at the solid contact against her shoulder. Her teeth grit and her lip curled as the grey lioness adjusted her positioning as to not get fully pushed over by the impact.

Alya's legs braced as well as they could in the sand. It was a fighting environment they were all used to. No one would get favor, here. The compression of her body turned into a lunge as the lioness sprung forward. Her weight behind her, Alya moved to butt her shoulder into Mat's mass in an attempt to weaken her opponent's footing. The contact drew a hearty grunt from her chest and she prepared to follow through.

Move 3: Miss

This was truly a battle of soldiers, Mat thought to herself as Alya retaliated without so much as thinking about retreating. Whoever won this battle would surely deserve the rank of Corporal, if not more! She took the powerful hit to her shoulder, throwing her off balance a bit which forced her to side step so she didn't fall. They might be females, but they were just as large and strong as their male counterparts.

As she got her footing under her again she lashed out with her paw once more just in case Alya had decided sticking close to her opponent was a wise idea, but the strike went wide.

Move 3: Glancing attack

The strike may have been wide, but only marginally so. Alya had remained in close proximity with the other lioness, hoping that the close engagement would give her an opportunity to get another hit in. Mate'moto was a capable opponent. Regardless of the results of this duel, she'd have to commend her on such when this was all over.

There was no time for compliments, now. Alya was an almost excessively serious lioness, and this occasion didn't serve for any break of character.

A paw swung out before her, heavy and aimed at Mat's side. She may have missed being hit by that last swing, but she wasn't going to let up now.

Move 4: Glancing blow

Her miss was frustrating, especially when Alya was able to retaliate. Mat was quick enough on her feet to partly dodge the attack, but she still felt the power behind the swing against her side. Teeth bared once more, a low growl left Mat's muzzle as she dug in her paws and darted in again. She wasn't a Guard, they weren't going to dance around each other and focus more on running and dodging than fighting. They were soldiers and would battle as such.

She snarled again as she reached up with her paw again, this time going for Alya's head. This wasn't the time to back down from the fight, even if it kept them close together and primed for a decent blow. The battle was coming to an end and they only had a short time to determine the winner.

Move 4: 2, Glancing attack
Total: 9

Neither of them were backing down, and Alya would expect no less. The constant engagement of the battle got her heart racing. As soldiers this it the sort of battle they trained for. The battles they lived for. Fierce and fiery and unrelenting.

The grey lioness didn't see the swipe to the face coming, moving aside only enough to where the blow caught the end of her maw instead of being a full blow to the cheek. A grunt escaped her and she reared back, following the momentum of the dodge. Her golden eyes met Mat's own as she lunged forward in a swipe at the legs. Aim low. Disrupt the balance. She had to stay on her feet. Though she might have had a slight advantage at the time, a moment's action could change it all.

Mat's hit was slightly off, but at least she connected. This was definitely an evenly matched battle and she knew there was no shame in losing this fight. She had seen some duels before that were horribly mismatched, one lion beating on the other without remorse or mercy. This was a battle of strength and two lionesses who would both wear any rank given to them with pride.

As she withdrew her paw, her eyes caught the lower movement from Alya. Going for the legs, not a bad idea at all. It caused Mat to jump to the side just a bit, the grey paw catching one leg well enough that she stumbled a bit but managed to stay on her feet.

Using her own awkward momentum, she reached forward again to try to knock her opponent on the shoulder, hoping to send her toppling over now that her center of gravity was balancing on three paws rather than four.

Move 5: 1, Miss
Total: 10

The swipe didn't quite send Alya toppling over, but it did enough. The hit made contact with her shoulder and sent her stumbling back a step to regain her footing. Things were coming to a close. She could feel it. The lioness recognized the need to end things soon or risk slipping.

A snarl escaped her maw and she lunged forward again. She instantly recognized the move as not precise enough and her paws found no contact. The snarl faded, but a low growl remained in her throat.

Move 6: Glancing blow
Total: 12

Mat took the time to find her footing as Alya stumbled away from her. She was breathing heavy now, adrenaline and excitement coursing through her. This was why she loved being a soldier - battle thrilled her to no end. Perhaps if this match didn't go in her favor she'd try for the Battlemaster rank instead. Fighting was always something she enjoyed after all.

The snarl alerted Mat to another incoming attack, but this one fell a bit short. Rather than dart in, the dark lioness reaching out to swat at Alya again from her secure spot in the sand, her paw clipping the other female once again.

The clip did more than Mat might have expected. Alya winced as a paw caught the side of her face, skidding backwards. A frustrated growl escaped her and she lost her footing, stumbling into the side.

"I concede," she muttered, knowing when she was beat. It had been a long battle and she would fairly say that the younger lioness had bested her.

"Mate'moto," Alya started, her voice low. There was frustration there, but a respect that she couldn't deny. "You'd better go far. I'll be... rooting for you."

The hit landed a bit more squarely than Mat thought it would, and she watched as the grey lioness stumbled and fell to the sand. She took a step closer in case Alya was going to rise and retaliate, but instead she gave her the victory. Had she been younger, Mat would have reacted far less professionally than she did. Still, it was with a grin that she accepted the gruff compliment.

"I'll go right to the top," she returned confidently. "And you can say you took the new General into extra rounds." She still had a ways to go, it was true, but Mat wasn't lacking in confidence. And with Alya snarling at her heels on the sidelines she knew she better go far, or else she'd never hear the end of it.
