 Utatu looked down at the puddle with an expression of contempt, mouth drawn into a scowl as he examined himself. Idiot. He had done it again. He had almost walked up to her den to see how she was. That wasn't going to do either of them any good, he knew it. Years had passed since Utatu had slipped away into the night, hoping his absence would soothe her mate enough to stop her aggressive insistence on making his mates life harder whenever Utatu came nearby. It hadn't been a pretty situation, he knew that. He always had. Hearing your mate slept with another male and almost could have had the oncoming litter be the other males was hard, and despite how desperately Utatu stood on the sidelines, helplessly hoping that she'd run away with him, it hadn't happened.
It wasn't going to happen.
Ever.
He knew he was supposed to get over it by now. Years had passed. They probably had another litter by now. They most likely solved their troubles and were madly in-love. There was absolutely nothing to be done, and if she was happy then good, that was what he wanted. Pining for a girl he couldn't have wasn't healthy after some point, and he had crossed that point eons ago.
So why couldn't he rid his mind of her?
Frustrated, he slapped at the puddle, groaning in protest. Oh, please, just stop thinking about it!

 The female cheetah stretched herself out as she came down from a tree she'd been napping in. During the heat of the day, she liked to conserve her energy, but sometimes it just couldn't be helped. Thirst was making her throat hurt and her nose incredibly dry. No amount of licking it would keep it wet because she had cotton mouth. The most evil thing in the world, in her opinion.
With the rains that recently fell, surely there was a nice and large puddle around to drink from.
Just as she thought that, Fainauriel's ears picked up splashing and she headed that direction cautiously, but automatically. As she neared it, she knew by scent, she spotted another cheetah at the puddle. He looked deep in thought.
Did that mean she could sneak in and get a drink? Probably not. It meant she'd have to make conversation wit him. That meant effort.
So she put on her brave face and quickly came out of the tall grass.
"Can I get a drink of the water?" She asked, not even bothering to say hello.

He heard her pawsteps before her voice, head jerking towards the sound. His eyes trailed to the puddle before he shrugged a shoulder. "Of course, be my guest," He hummed, not one to deny her a drink regardless if her entrance lacked tact. His tail flicked around himself as he retracted his paw from the water, manners not forgotten.
He couldn't help the brief glance over, noting her aesthetically pleasing pattern before diverting his gaze back to the puddle. For a moment he almost thought he wanted to try small talk, but how in the gods was he going to accomplish that?
He wasn't, lets be honest.
So instead, Utatu found himself carefully running through various lines and phrases he could say that might strike interest in the new cheetah. Being along for months on end made one eager for company, and Utatu was no exception. His nose scrunched at the realization that he just wasn't good at this anymore; getting your heart smashed took something out of you. So, instead, he cleared his throat, redirecting his attempts at an easy yes or no question despite his inner protests.
"This isn't pride lands, is it?"
