Monsters & Creatures Compendium
Some things are better left alone.

User Image

___Overview: A monster is any creature, usually found in legends or horror fiction, that is often hideous and may produce fear or physical harm by its appearance and/or its actions. The word "monster" derives from Latin monstrum, an aberrant occurrence, usually biological, that was taken as a sign that something was wrong within the natural order. In most cases, these entities are found far from civilization, but with the inevitable spread of the latter, occurrences are bound to become more frequent with the former. Generally speaking, those that can manage to fell one of these without a squad are usually regarded as unbelievable, but any group that can do so are given the opportunity for unfettered experiences.

___Chapters:

  • Land- and Terrestrial-type
  • Air- and Spiritual-type
  • Water- and Deep Water-type
  • Insect- and Arachne-type
  • Plant- and Faux Plant-type
  • Fungal-, Viral-, and Bacterial-type
  • Exotic Monstrum

___Specifics: Any mod is quotable for an encounter not just in back country sides, but even in well-worn routes like the great path to Takumi. More often than not, monsters are found in quantities much greater than 1, typically leading to group dynamics or hasty retreat maneuvers. Do not fear running away to report to a Kage about a needed Bingo Book update, as many foolish souls have perished in not doing so. In particular, simple Giants from all creature categories are very common, and do not require mod interaction unless wanted. For mods, please see this thread for information.

___Titles: Even within the realm of monstrum, there are exceptions which will generally be introduced with associated titles. They may be as simple as 'Supergiant', as complex as 'The Eater and Bane of Oinin', or as muted as 'Elementally Gifted'. To be sure, these are not to be undertaken without a full squad and advanced scouting measures, but the rewards for taking them down will be more than normal.

___Bingo Book Updates: It will be wise to keep a simple Bingo Book for information, in your Kage's Office, with a trusted shinobi. As information for each monster will be known only to that village's Bingo Book, it will not be listed here, and can be considered valuable for trading measures between shinobi villages. If the information is spread to all shinobi villages, it will be officially posted here. Each 'Unknown' entry is a specified, defined piece of information, with the 'Notes' section typically defining either extraneous info, treasure, or carcass usage. (as applicable)

Giant Animals and Creatures

User Image

___Name: Giant Animal
___Epithet: --
___Threat Level: E-Rank to B-Rank.
___Description: An animal that is anywhere from large to exceedingly large as a member of its species. Generally includes all creature types. Young threats will usually be much weaker than adult or even elderly threats.
___Abilities:
___• As normal for the species, but enhanced to E- or up through B-Rank, depending on the animal's threat level.

___Known Weaknesses:
___• As normal for the species.
    ___• No inherent, passive defenses.

___Notes:
___• Often hunted as big game.

Mountain Stalker

User Image

___Name: Mountain Stalker
___Epithet: "Beast of Aries"
___Threat Level: D-Rank (children) to A-Rank (adult).
___Description: A massive quadrupedal creature that moves across mountains and rocky plains with ease. Adults stand at just over twice the height of a horse with all the necessary bulk to support that frame and a sizable set of curved horns. Mountain Stalkers travel in herds of four to six and feed mostly on grass and leaves, and though they are capable of eating meat, they hunt mainly to secure a feeding ground. These beasts are some of the most vibrantly colored land creatures known, ranging in color from deep reds to brilliant greens and blues, with pattern and color being determined mostly by genetics; as such, heavy adult hides fetch a very hefty sum at auction.
___Abilities:
___• Minimum D-Rank defense to physical attacks (children), A-Rank (adults).
    ___• 7 unknown abilities.

___Known Weaknesses:
___• Need a run up to reach peak running speed.
    ___• 3 unknown weaknesses.

___Notes:
___• If incorporated in either tailoring or leatherworking, a Mountain Stalker's hide adds its price to the final cost of the project and increases the maximum number of Variable Marbles that can be added to the project by one.
    ___• 3 unknown uses.

Glass Wolf

User Image

___Name: Glass Wolf
___Epithet: --
___Threat Level: B-Rank (pack), D-Rank (solitary or pair).
___Description: These dark wolves are about the size of a normal grey wolf, but are in no way related, given that they have almost no corporeal form. In fact, they almost seem to be made of smoke or shadows. Facing one, that might not seem like such a dangerous thing; in fact, they would sooner run away than risk attacking something bigger than them on their own, but they run in packs of five or more and therefore rarely feel the need to run. Their prey is often caught unawares in the middle of a pack's surprise attack. Only their glowing red eyes set these beasts apart as something more than a simple shadow.
___Abilities:
    ___• Travel in packs.
    ___• 4 unknown abilities.

___Known Weaknesses:
___• Bright light and light-based techniques blind and terrify them.
    ___• 4 unknown weaknesses.

___Notes:
___• Fur and blood can be used to mask traps or hide things from sensory techniques.
    ___• 1 unknown use.

Cursed Shadow

User Image

___Name: Cursed Shadow
___Epithet: --
___Threat Level: Variable, typically B-Rank.
___Description: A mound of polluted Chakra that accumulated under a battlefield or other place filled with highly potent Chakra, the Cursed Shadow straddles the line between Ninjutsu and Genjutsu. On its own, it is very feeble and is easily dispersed by either physical means or with Ninjutsu. When it has a host, it becomes completely incorporeal and exists as a second shadow of the person, regardless of lighting. When killed, a Cursed Shadow lingers as a puddle of Cursed Shadow Chakra, fading over the course of a day unless gathered and bottled.
___Abilities:
___• A Cursed Shadow of at least B-Rank grants its host the ability to passively sense other Chakra sources within 50 meters, albeit with fairly low resolution.
    ___• 6 unknown abilities.

___Known Weaknesses:
___• Weak to physical attacks when without a host.
    ___• 2 unknown weaknesses.

___Notes:
___• A salve infused with Cursed Shadow Chakra can be used as a catalyst with Genjutsu to increase the number of affected senses by one for two Genjutsu before the effect dissipates. One such dose of the salve can be created per rank of the Cursed Shadow from whence it came.
    ___• 1 unknown use.

Coal Beast

User Image

___Name: Coal Beast
___Epithet: "Gelel Guardian"
___Threat Level: S-Rank.
___Description: A ferocious beast that resides in mines, always near veins of Gelel. Dissection of certain specimens has revealed traits typically attributed to many other subterranean species. Oddly, their faces resemble closely those of humans, but with the maw of a shark and flat, blunt teeth ideal for crushing food. Their front legs end in what can loosely be described as hands with long fingers perfectly suited for reaching through small gaps. The rest of their bodies are covered in a thick black fur that it manipulates freely and easily. It is hypothesized that Coal Beasts consume Gelel Stones for energy and leech moisture from the ground. Survivors of Coal Beast attacks describe them as beings of the shadows that move swiftly and travel through the dirt as they do on land. Typically appearing in groups of three to five, groups of Coal Beasts are typically entered into the Bingo Book as S-Rank squads for their lethality.
___Abilities:
    ___• Free movement through earth.
    ___• 9 unknown abilities.

___Known Weaknesses:
    ___• Blind.
    ___• 1 unknown weakness.

___Notes:
___• A hand can be used as a divining rod to find ores, granting the possessor the ability to add up to two to a mining roll.

It requires an immense amount of chakra to open and contains a demonic, bird-like monster called "Satori", which is tethered to the world outside the box by the person who opens it. User Image

___Epithet: "Beast of Aquarius"
___Threat Level: A-Rank.
___Description: These bizarre, otherworldly creatures live in groups of one or two in the depths of the ocean. Their clear bodies allow their glowing, purple blood to illuminate their surroundings and attract prey, which they crush between their hooves before consuming. They are constantly shrouded in a thin veil of steam that clings to their bodies as a protective layer; held in place and sustained by unknown forces, the steam does not immediately dissipate upon their death and propels their carcasses upward until it dissipates, which usually happens around the time their blood stops glowing. Inspection of the few Deep Sea Hippocampus carcasses that have washed up has revealed they have a unique brain structure, though its function is unknown.

Salamandasaurus

User Image

___Name: Salamandasaurus
___Epithet: "Axe-Headed Leviathan"
___Threat Level: Variable, minimum C-Rank.
___Description: A beast that embodies the extreme survival traits of wild animals, the Axe-Headed Leviathan has been found not only in the ocean, but also living on land on isolated islands. Its flat, rectangular head is the widest point on its body (excluding its limbs), sitting at just under three meters in width. The beast gains its epithet not only from its axe-shaped head but also its phenomenal length, as the shortest specimen discovered was forty meters long from head to tail. It has been shown to absorb water and it is speculated to subsist entirely off of the ambient Chakra in the water, given that it does not seem to have any noticeable digestive system. It possesses a large, toothless mouth that it uses to suck up small creatures and plants so they can be drained of their energy. When on land, one end of its tail always remains submerged in water so that it can remain hydrated at all times; if the tail is severed while performing this function, the creature will rapidly retreat into the ocean. Axe-Headed Leviathans live alone and will attack Samehada-relatives if any are nearby. Threat level is based on creature size and damage caused, and after reaching A-Rank or higher in strength, specimens are typically entered into the Bingo Book.
___Abilities:
___• E-Rank Chakra drain in its mouth.

It can travel up to a hundred miles this way before dying. When inhaled, it takes root in the unfortunate creature's lungs and starts to grow there, causing pneumonia-like symptoms in the host. The host remains contagious until the fungus is killed or removed from the lungs, and will naturally recover in a few days after treatment. If left untreated, it results in death in about two weeks.
