I got this formula from the dumpster. And it involves a lot of butterflies. Most of them I can get from towns but I'm kind of confused on what the Great Monarch is.
I need five of those things and they are expensive off the wazoo.
On second thought, everything is expensive off the wazoo, so maybe that isn't too surprising.
If you happen to have the Great Monarch, I would really like to have it. The bug is worth billions in the marketplace and I don't have that kind of money.

The Monarch Butterflies are expensive because they're rare to find on towns. x .x; I think I've read that they're also used in the alchemy backwing quests, so they're also highly sought after. Good luck!
Each type of bug has one rare kind: Butterfly: Great Monarch Grasshopper: Golden Legs Fly: Purple Beetle: Rhino Dragonfly: Demonfly Cicade: Whistler
If I remember correctly, you should be able to recognize a rare bug because its icon is different (but just as tiny! so it's hard to tell) and because the rare bugs fly faster than common bugs. I'm not sure if they're faster though. I just remember hearing that the Demonfly is fast. Each bug appears during certain times of day. The Great Monarchs will only appear during the daytime. I wish I could be 100% sure on this bug speed info. I can't find a guide that talks about the speed though. It's just something that I think was common knowledge, so that doesn't help. u .u;
If you know this next part already, please feel free to ignore it. I figure I'll add this info just in case. I'm no expert in alchemy, but I know a bit:
The Butterfly Coat formula is level 3. Therefore your alchemy level must also be 3 (or above) to use it. Maybe you can level up your alchemy while you're questing the items (if you aren't already at 3). There's no need to level up if you do not want to get into alchemy. You can also go to the Item Alchemy Exchange Subforum where users will craft the item for you. Just bring them the formula and ingredients.
Hope your quest is coming along. I've never actually seen a Great Monarch Butterfly in towns, so I understand how difficult they must be to catch. heart

I just saw a guide and thought of this thread.
Someone explains a method of using Adblock to hide common bugs so the rare ones are easier to spot if you come across any. If anything, it's a really good compilation of info about the Towns trash, flowers and bugs.
