I understand that only Rings and not weapons (ie Ninja Sword, etc.) can be used in zOMG... but do the armor, shields, gauntlets, helmets, etc., or any other items made from our recipies, have any defensive or other use in zOMG? or are these items merely for avatar cosmetic purposes?

Purely for avatar dressup purposes. They cannot be used in-game, dropped in the Aquarium, sold back to shops, etc.
Well, you can put them in your house...but unlike other games, recipe items aren't used in the game to make you stronger.
