Onuj's Story Onuj walked slowly to the den she called home. The young girl did everything she could to procrastinate, but before she knew it she was staring her parents in the face. They were looking at her strangely, and Onuj briefly wondered if she’d broken up yet another fight. It was sad really.
She had always wanted to find true love, and she finally had. A few days ago, Onuj had met the most wonderful guy. She had come from meeting him again that morning. Ajizi, the brightly coated hyena who had stolen her heart, she figured that he should probably know the news first. That way, if her parents killed her, someone would know. Not that they would kill her! Or, at least, she hoped. She had no clue with how her parents were going to react. Her mom would probably understand, but her dad… well, that was another story entirely. He’d always been overprotective of Onuj, telling her constantly how to not dishonor her family. And at the first test of freedom, the white hyena had gotten herself pregnant.
After a few seconds of awkward staring, Onuj finally got up the nerve to speak. “I’m pregnant.”
She could have bashed her head against the wall. After the big long speech she had come up with, the only two words that came out were blunt and to the point… exactly what Onuj DIDN’T want. The look on her parents faces however, were priceless. Had this been a different time and a different situation she might’ve found it funny.
Quickly overcoming the shock, Mzuka’s face turned downright murderous. “How DARE you.” He glared down at his daughter, and she flinched away from him. “What’s his name?
“But dad, he’s really nice and I lo-“ Mzuka cut her off with a growl. “His name is Ajizi.” Onuj bowed her head low, feeling like a traitor. Some lover she was… she’d just put her Ajizi in the worst situation he’d possibly ever been in. Her father was not a man to be messed with.
Without another word, Mzuka stalked out of the den, towards where he knew the young hyena was staying. Onuj spent the next few hours pacing around the den, worried sick at the fate of her lover. At the prodding’s of her mother, she finally fell asleep in the back of the cave. She never heard the sound of her father padding softly home, for she was dreaming of Ajizi.
Mzuka's Story Mzuka lifted his head off of his paws. His mate was asleep next to him, and their daughter snoozing on the other side. Quietly, he rose to his feet, determined to carry out his plans tonight.
He wrinkled his nose and let out a soundless snarl at the thought of what he was going to do. No, what he was being FORCED to do! If no one else would defend his family's honor, it would have to be him. After all, clearly his wretched daughter had no more honor - he scoffed - and her mother was too blinded by her love for their only offspring to properly punish her. But he had chased the boy off, and he would deal, too, with the girl.
Padding silently around the sleeping form of his mate, he eyed his daughter. She looked so like him, and yet... He shook his head, scowling. She had no respect for tradition, and she had dishonored her own parents by going off with that horrible boy in the first place, much less... Yes. The problem would have to be dealt with.
Mzuka raised a heavy paw and dealt his daughter a blow to the side of the head that rolled her over in the dirt. She let out a soft gasp, before falling unconscious. Quickly, so not to awaken his mate, he leaned down and slipped Onuj's limp form onto his back, carrying her out of the den and into the night.
He wouldn't harm her, no, she was his only daughter, the pride and joy of her mother. He had enough sense to realize that would make them no better off. But this plan would ensure that no one, save their small family, would know of Onuj's disgraceful mistake.
He carried her all night until he reached the spot, a long, deep ditch at the bottom of a hill. Going down was tough, and getting out would be even tougher, especially for an injured, pregnant adolescent. He deposited his daughter's unconscious body at the bottom of the ditch, and sat down next to her, standing sentry. He would only have to keep her there long enough for her to have the puppies. He would... dispatch of them, subtly, of course, and then they could return to Uvuli, explaining that Onuj had tragically lost the puppies. Then they'd be sure to find her a respectable mate - once she was grown. No one would be any the wiser.
It was the perfect plan. Onuj would no doubt be grateful to him when she was older, and more capable of understanding the importance of honor and tradition. He laid down next to Onuj's limp body, content that he would avert the disaster caused by his daughter's mistake.
Ajizi's Story In the wimpy young hyena's stupor after losing the female he assumed would be the mate of his lifetime, he groaned, lifting his blue maned face. I've got it! He thought, and raced off towards the family's den. His green eyes scanned the scene, wondering fearfully if Onuj's father was around. If he was, he was sure to get killed at the mere thought of getting his precious mate back. Gathering all the courage he could muster, Ajizi stepped forward, poking his head in her line of sight, "Uvuli?" he whispered, scenting the air for the father. Ajizi was not a fighter, a small thing of a hyena, so his brain was his biggest weapon. With Onuj's disappearance, and now what seemed to be Mzuka's absence, he put what he thought was two and two together. Mzuka had dragged her off, that must be it.
"Uvuli, I have a plan, do you think you could help me please?" He pleaded from just behind a scrub bush, waiting to see if it was a trap. "We have to look for Onuj, I... I'll stop at nothing to get her back... and our puppies... help?" His green eyes welled with tears.
"I'll help," he heard her answer and his heart lept against his ribs in excitement. She had a wonderful voice, just as his darling Onuj, he could tell she genuinely cared for her daughter and wanted to get her back just as much as he did. This was going to work, he was going to win her back! Even if that despicable creature stood in his way. He stepped completely out of the bushes and began to scent around, his white muzzle pressed against the earth at times as he tried to pick out her scent.
Uvuli's Story It seemed like forever that they had been searching, like they would never find either Onuj or Mzuka. Uvuli expected the worst, of course, and over the last little while it'd been seeming more and more likely. She knew he wasn't happy, that he blamed their daughter and that if they had gone missing together then there were very good reasons to worry. Mzuka was arrogant, he was domineering and overall a very unpleasant hyena to be around, but part of Uvuli had grown attached to him, feeling it was the right thing to do after they had Onuj. Over the time spent searching, Ajizi had made her reconsider this. He was sweet, kind and very unlike Mzuka in almost every way, not to mention he genuinely cared and despite his own uneasiness he was willing to go through all of this to find Onuj. It was for these reasons that Uvuli had started to care for Ajizi. It was these qualities that she used to excuse a growing infatuation with him and it was worry for Onuj and knowing they had a relationship. With things so bleak and them getting closer everyday, she’d finally talked to him. They mourned the loss of Onuj but there was one small bright spot in the memory, as Uvuli reflected.
“I love you,” he’d said. Something Uvuli never heard, something that made it all seem OK. And so they had settled in for the night, side by side, Uvuli left to quietly reflect looking up at the night sky. No sounds reached her ears, though there was rustling in the grass nearby. From no where appeared one hyena neither expected to see again, staring with purple eyes.
