"Do you honestly think I'd let you out of my sight? You ingrate! I am going to follow you around this ship and make sure you do a very good job of inspecting every inch of it." the master said frowning. "It's just you will do all the work." he smirked evilly.

As Todd walked out onto the deck, the sudden change of light disoriented him slightly, and he stumbled, nearly knocking a gentleman dressed in dark clothes. He caught himself in time, and edged around him, hoping to look out over the town one last time.

THe man glared at Todd. "Is everyone on this voyage clumsy and inconsiderate?" he growled.

First Mate Hanley was leaving her deck, preparing for a final patrol on the ship when she came upon the three on deck, two of whom she recognized as part of the crew. She appraoched them and frowned slightly.
"Is everyone on this voyage clumsy and inconsiderate?"
"You two, are you at your stations or do I need to remind you of your jobs?"
She turned to the dark clad man and raised an eyebrow.
"I'm the captain's first mate, may I ask why you've held up two of my crewmen?"

((Sorry I had Bday things to do... PLUS an anime viewing... PLUS churchy things... Been busy!))
James turned towards the First mate and immediately whiped the scowl he had been wearing off his face.
"Sorry Ma'am. This gentleman had one of his slaves escape this morning and was about to search the ship for it. I just did a search of the ship Ma'am, and the only stowaway I found was male and african. He didn't seem to believe me though."
James looked the first mate square in the eye. He was a good actor and this translated to being a good liar. He just hoped that the cook hadn't seen him helping her and if he did, that he would keep his mouth shut.

THe dark clad man almost let a smile show on his face. Maybe this boy was not a stupid as he looked. He turned back to the first mate. A lady? He frowned again. "I want this ship searched again under my supervision! I want that slave of mine found. If she is not on this ship I will move on, but if she is...well..." here the man smiled coldly. "Let's just say I know a lot of businessmen who would rather another ship take care of thier cargo."

Knowing that this was a conversation between the merchant and the first mate, James wisely stayed silent. He had said his peice already.
((A one liner... NOOOoooooo!!!))

"Let's just say I know a lot of businessmen who would rather another ship take care of thier cargo."
Senna raised an eyebrow at the man's words and shrugged casually.
"Well the Lady Willow has built a reputation for efficiency and accountability, one that I'm sure her passangers will consider before simple talk and rumor"
She didn't like the man and wanted him off the ship as soon as possible, yet Senna was inclined to give him what he wanted before getting rid of him. She gesutred toward James and continued.
"He's told you already that your property is not on this ship and I'm inclined to believe his story more than yours. Nevertheless, I'll give you limited access to search the deck and holdings-only the deck and holdings. I will escort you on this search and want you off this ship once you're done"
Senna really hoped she wouldn't be proved wrong.

James nodded.
"Yes Ma'am. I just get back to my duties now that you've got the situation well in hand."
Without another word or look at the merchant, he quickly walked off and resumed loading cargo.
I'm gonna get whipped! He knew that neither the captian nor the first mate would be amused by his deception and he tried to control his shaking hands at that thought. Smuggling the girl back on the ship was going to be very hard at this rate.
He was just glad the places the first mate had mentioned were not anywhere near where he had hidden the girl. He hoped she was alright but couldn't help but be a little angry at her for putting him in this position in the first place.

Todd, who had wisely decided to step back a little and say nothing during this conversation, tapped James on the shoulder.
"Look, if you want to get that girl in a better hiding place, i can distract the first mate if it helps." he smiled cheekily. "although you'll be owing me a favour when we reach the new world!"

James slumped in relief when he realized that Todd wasn't going to turn him in. He had been concerned about what the younger boy would say about the slave situation.
Quietly, he leaned towards the cook as they worked side by side and whispered, "She's off the ship right now. I was wondering how I would get her back on it. Thanks and as long as I'm on this ship or in America I'll help you all I can."

Todd grinned.
"no problem. You didn't think i'd snitch on you, did you? I may not have money, but that doesn't mean i'm thick. I know we're gonna have to work together, and as long as you're happy that means i'll have one less person to worry about. "
He licked his lips, winked at James, and set off after the first mate. He caught up with them and called out.
The position of Cook, to a lateral thinker, is actually one of suprizing power. Without a cook, would the crew be fed? And without a good cook, would the crew be satisfied. Todd was both a good cook and a lateral thinker, so he used this knowledge to his advantage.
"Ma'am!" He called to the first mate, as respectfully as possible. "I was just wondering ma'am, what should the cast-off dinner be? If we were to have a meat dish, it would inspire the crew, but it would also mean that we would have to limit it for the rest of the voyage. What do you think ma'am?"

James quietly smiled as he looked after Todd. It would seem the young cook was well aware of how much power he could hold on the willow and how important it was that the two of them got along. He resolved then and there to help the other boy as much as he could, perhaps he could even call him friend?
Only time would tell.

Senna blinked at the cook's question. What did she know about food and cooking, except to eat it? But she had to give some kind of reply.
"Erm...you do whatever seems fine to you. If you think an inspirational meat dish is in order, fine"

Todd smiled. The man in the bar had been right. Act as if you knew a lot, and people would think you did. He said that success is mostly image. If you look like you know where you're going, people would think that.
He glanced over his shoulder to see if James was back on board the ship. He probably needed more time.
"Uuh... perhaps Ma'am would like to take the gentleman down to luggage storage. After all, that would surely be the easiest place for a stow away to hide?" he prayed that James would have the sense to hide his stowaway well.
