Brian sat silently throughout the processions, just listening to what his teammates were saying. Of course, he could understand where they were coming from; the questions that were being asked were tantamount to torture, especially when he saw Doc Owl and the kids escorted into the room. Well, SWIPE and Cruxias were really pulling at straws with that one. Surely they didn't think that people would honestly believe that Snagem would willingly put children in harm's way? It seemed a few of the jurors were sympathetic to their cause, if the looks he could see were anything to go by. Hearing Cruxias ask Deo if he had really struck a deal with SWIPE caught his attention, and he found himself seething inside momentarily, at least until Deo revealed that his grandmother had been threatened.
Apparently SWIPE wasn't above using their own families against them if push came to shove. Brian wondered just what he would have done in Deo's situation, if it were his parents that were threatened. Would he have taken the deal? Would he have called SWIPE out? Arceus only knew what his reaction would have been. No one could really say how they would have reacted in any given situation had they not been part of it. In the past, he would have said with absolute certainty that he would have taken the deal, just to protect his family; now, however, looking back on what he and the other Snagems had been through, he could no longer say with certainty what he would have done.

Aile frowned when she came across the little Diglings, kneeling down lower towards their level. She looked at them, sighing as she listened to the others. There was the whole thing with testing the warp pad, but that was something to briefly put aside. “Hey, little ones. You should probably hide for a bit. Hopefully we won’t be here long, and your parents should be fine, but you might want to keep underground for a bit.” The ground channeller’s gaze would flick over to Clare, tilting her head. “If you’re serious about that, you may actually want to do it now. If things hit the fan and we need to move, we probably won’t have the time to do it.” Looking over to the warp pad, Aile would think again. “Hopefully there’s no bright light on the other end… but something small to test might not be a bad shout.” Aile would bring out the SNAG again to look over the blueprints, frowning. “If I’m reading this right, it’s normally an open floor, but I don’t know how they might have set it up for the trial. It would depend on where this tile falls in their layout.” Aile pointed out the specific tile that was their landing point on the device. “If it’s in easy view, then, uh… Things will get interesting rather quickly.” With her left hand, she would begin to go for her pocket again, until she saw Poggle still resting on her arm. “Unless… Do we have a Pokemon smaller than Poggle here among us?”
—--
Crystal frowned when Deo was called onto the stand, wondering why he was next, after the longer standing veterans of Odd and Blizz. Apparently, it was just to continue on with calling into question their moral fiber, considering where Cruxias’ line of questioning went. Light, he really went and did that? Nothing seemed to come up of it until now, but man… Deo really didn’t know too much about keeping his mouth shut… Whatever, hopefully he’d find some way to explain himself out of this. And hopefully, nothing was actually said. Or tracked. Light….

DeoLux Once more with the heart sinking. Deo needed to answer carefully. Though lying was off the table he wanted to shout at the lawyer calling him wicked and the court kangaroo, but no. Deo looked at the paper, at the lawyer, and at the jury. “They made a deal with me to keep a radio to be in contact with them mentioning violence or hostile intent to my grandmother should i refuse. I will say right here and now.” Deo tensed and relaxed a bit. “Not once did SNAGEM make any criminal moves, rather when we were all victimized for crimes which were brought up against us for what? I will say though, the thought of SNAGEM and CYPHER being bed buddies is laughable. But, would you accept a deal with an underworldly being if they threatened your family? Your loved ones? It is a deal with a devil in a sense. Faustian at that. The deals don't stop, how much would you get for hiring former goons and leaders of CYPHER to work for you so you can be persuaded with the false hope of being a ‘Hero of the People’ when in fact, their mission has you as a pawn in a larger, more wicked scheme. I can conclude that this deal with SWIPE” As he takes out his radio and puts it on the witness stand “is done. We are not bed buddies, we were two different teams. If you were threatened with violence against ones you care about, what would you have done? SWIPE gave me an ultimatum, SNAGEM on the other hand as i discovered is very forgiving and trusting of the ones who call them friends. I will never turn again, even under the penalty of persecution or death.”"...While I appreciate you producing the radio to prove my point, me marquant comme ayant raison," Cruxias says smoothly, idly twirling his ivory cane as he continues to keep his eyes on the much larger hybrid crouched behind the stand. "You should know we would have had to present that as evidence prior to the trial, which we obviously could not do. So hold onto that radio, I doubt the judge wants to fingerprint what could potentially become a piece of evidence." A light chuckle emits from the lawyer's throat, he was quite pleased that his current witness was being so forthcoming. As Deo comes to the point about SWIPE threatening his grandmother, Cruxias raises his hand with a white glove and interjects. "I would like to raise an objection your honor, Deo is testifying contrary to evidence I have already supplied the court. If you would indulge me for just a moment?" Jenny thinks for a moment, and then mildly nods. "Mister Deo, please refrain from your testimony a moment to allow Cruxias to present this evidence." She commands, turning back to look as Cruxias rummages through a large box of electronics next to his briefcase, pausing a moment before emerging with a thumb drive. "This," He announces in a triumphant sort of way, not smug but very self-assured all the same. "Is bodycam footage from the interrogations conducted by SWIPE personnel - this was taken from Essentia, also known as Emma. Let's take a look and see what it shows off." He presents the device to Surge, who hooks it into a miniature projector. After a few moments the lights dim and a lower-resolution video projects onto a blank space of the erected courtroom, showing Deo frozen in place in Sub's office back in headquarters before the video begins to play. Atlantis_Darts Emma's helmet clicks off as she removes it, looking at the former officer with sad eyes as she approaches, tucking it under one arm. "You're amongst law enforcement now Deo. We know, from talking to the other Snagems that a lot of them feel like family... they get people to buy into the hype that everyone's one big happy family." She shakes her head though, as she hops up to sit on the desk on Deo's side, looking at him. "But that's not true, is it? You already have a family. If they've threatened your grandmother, we can help." "It looks like to me, your honor and other people of the jury," Cruxias announces, pausing the video with a small remote. "That while the SWIPE interrogations were intense and indeed strayed into uncomfortable at times it was filled with very human emotions like this. The officers are people, they are human, but you can see here the exact opposite of what this Snagem on the stand is proporting. They offered to protect this Luxray hybrid's grandmother, offered him empathy and succor in a time of enormous stress for everyone involved, and yet he stands here and demonstrably lies to the court. Un menteur to the end. I implore you to consider why." The prosecutor thrusts a hand forwards, pointing it at the Snagem on the witness stand again. "Why are you standing here and lying to the court? Could it be you had doubts about the purity and 'forgiveness' as you say? Why did you take the radio in the first place? Answer that not only for me but for the whole court to hear." He lets the accusation hang in the air, waiting for Deo's answer. SubonicXP "...well there is the warp panel...not sure how I feel about this." Larrimore said as he walked up behind the others, looking around at all the young Diglett. "The panel at least looks to be in one piece, for what it's worth. What about the Dugtrio though?" Espeon_Commander “If I’m reading this right, it’s normally an open floor, but I don’t know how they might have set it up for the trial. “Unless… Do we have a Pokemon smaller than Poggle here among us?” Requiem of Whyspers Clare regrouped with the other Snagems as everyone else managed to either evade, defeat or capture one or more Dugtrio. As everyone gathered in the chamber beyond the false wall, they frowned. “I kinda feel bad for catching it…” They noted to themself, looking down at the Ultra Ball in their hand. “Maybe I’ll let it go when we leave?” They wondered to themself. If they did so, they would once more be defenseless but they could at least take solace in reuniting a family they had unintentionally separated. They watched some of the baby Diglett pop in and out of the various holes around the room before focusing on the warp panel. Unfamiliar with the devices, they asked a question that felt obvious. “How do we make sure it’s working? Toss a coin onto it or something?” "Well I don't keep a lot of coins on me, I don't think I have..." As Darts rifles through his jacket, Ogerpon onlooking, he pulls an ancient coin out of one of his inside pockets, recognition flickering into his ruby eyes for a brief moment before it 'plinks' out of his hands, him pantomiming trying to catch it as it bounces from claw to claw and then lands on the warp panel. There's enough delay with the old technology for Gimmighoul's form to be recognized, bursting free of its ball as usual with no regard for Darts' orders as it chases down its favorite piece of currency, landing in the middle of the warp panel with a confused, "Gimmi?" barely escaping its lips before vanishing out of sight with a corkscrew-spin. The jacketed Snagem is horrified standing there for a brief but incredibly incredibly long moment before there's another woosh of sound as Gimmighoul returns, triumphantly hoisting the coin above its head. "Gimmi!" It shouts, clearly unbothered by the seriousness of the situation it had just stumbled into. "D-Did anyone see you?!" Darts practically shouts, trying to do his best to not bodily lift and shake the little coin gremlin as he kneels down near the tiny returned Pokemon. "Gim... ghoul." The Ghost-type has to think for a second, but shakes its head after a moment. The Giratina hybrid breathes a sigh of relief as it explains and he turns to the rest of the group. "It sounds like, according to Gimmighoul here, the other side of this warp panel is inside of a dark closet of some kind - maybe to hold jackets or gym equipment or something. In its own words 'it had better things to be doing than looking around too much' but nobody saw it."

Anger filled his eyes and his teeth grit. Any one who could detect aura could tell Deo was now an armed ticking timebomb full of rage ready to explode. He would lean up in his chair all while dead stare at the prosecutor. He would say this as softly as he could as he was visibly ready to blow.
"Have you, not anyone else, been chained down by the ebonite bomb collars?" Deo would begin "Were you turned into something you could not bear to have done to you? SWIPE would put bomb collars on innocent children, they would not have forgiven me. What of the other evidence of the rest of the interviews? Did they get a bodycam or did it suddenly 'not work'? I took the radio to be clean, but I am a SNAGEM operative now, thus I took the radio feeling like faust and now I retract the offer that SWIPE offered. As I rather voice my allegiance to SNAGEM and not SWIPE as they would have rather…. Questionable antics? I will not speak on how I feel about this charade, but to answer the question. I took the deal for my selfish sake, which I feel terrible about now. Why would I lie to the courts? Have YOU been accused of something so terrible as Bio Terrorism?”
After Deo finished he would slink in the chair and mutter to himself quietly “Und jetzt bist du der Verbrecher” (and now, you are the criminal) all while giving the hateful eye stare of death to the lawyer, or what Deo would call him Faust.

DeoLux Anger filled his eyes and his teeth grit. Any one who could detect aura could tell Deo was now an armed ticking timebomb full of rage ready to explode. He would lean up in his chair all while dead stare at the prosecutor. He would say this as softly as he could as he was visibly ready to blow. "Have you, not anyone else, been chained down by the ebonite bomb collars?" Deo would begin " Were you turned into something you could not bear to have done to you? 'Faust's' blue eyes cloud over, filled with something that looks less like joy at his case going well and more like akin to pity. He lets the accusations and jabs wash over him, as Jenny begins banging her gavel to try and interrupt him. "Order, order! I will have order in my court. Bailiff Surge, if you-" Cruxias holds up a nonchalant hand, interrupting the judge lightly as well as causing the Electric gym leader to pause for a moment as Deo finishes. "As you can see, it is my belief that the court should consider this key question. Why would someone engage in un pacte avec le diable unless there was some reason for it? They said themselves, they did it for their own selfish reasons, a motif that has shown up a few times so far in witness testimony. That they were doing what they believed was right. But who gave them that confidence? Who made it so they felt as though they had the mandat de Arceus to do whatever they wanted carte blanche?" He pauses, moving himself back towards the table where the box of various electronic devices were still perched. "I have here, all of the camera recordings taken on that first day of questioning when Snagem was taken into custody. You will find no missing moments or strange absences. Just pure evidence. Think on the questions I have brought forward, and it will show you the truth of this case." His eyes lock with the Snagem leader's over the heads of everyone, belying again his indication of just who he thought was at fault here. With that, clearly ceding the rest of his time, he re-seats himself at the desk, adjusting his striped tie back to straightness with a jingle as his prosecutor's badge moves on his lapel. "Now then, Mister Sub," Jenny seemed to be calming down, despite the manic disruption in her court room a moment ago. "Normally you have been allowing the witness to speak on their behalf," She indicates Deo with a nod as she looks down at him through her spectacles. "However, this witness should count himself lucky not to be found in contempt of court or disrupting proceedings and facing another trial." A sigh escapes the judge's lips as her veneer of official courtroom arbiter drops, considering the Luxray hybrid with more than a little bit of care and concern. "It is fine to be angry, young man, but how best to channel and use that energy should be just as considered as your own anger." Her eyes raise to consider Reno, Sol, and Sub as they cluster around the Defense table, the rest of the team just behind them in the gallery. "Do you have any closing statements? Otherwise I will have the prosecutor call his next witness."

Sol had taken a glance towards Deo as he was called to the stand, watching as he approached. He'd been a member he kept more wary about, given what he understood about his past as a cop. He couldn't help drawing some parallels to Cera's attempt at trying to play both sides between the team and the Rangers, certainly aware of her past actions despite not being present for them. Was Deo the same way too, was there someone else he was answering to? Sinnoh was definitely a region less keen on the team even before all this, they could be the sort to send someone in undercover.
He wasn't quite expecting an answer to such curiosities when Cruxias brought up that Deo had received a radio from SWIPE. Had to have been during the interrogation... his eyes narrowed as he looked at Deo, then at Sub. Was this news to him too, or yet another thing being kept secret from most everyone else? At this point, he supposed it didn't matter for now, but it did give him all the reasons in the world to justify why he couldn't trust him or the idea that the so-called deal with SWIPE was off. How much of Deo's whole thing was an act, an attempt to make them look worse? Was the remark about his grandmother just a way to grasp at the heartstrings? Even if it wasn't, shooting his mouth off wasn't doing anyone any favors now.
It'd be the closest Sol got to actually making any meaningful movements during the entire trial, a hand resting on the Defense table in case he had to stop Deo from adding to the charges against them from his outburst.
In the gallery, Cera's reaction to this information would twist rapidly from initial shock that Deo had been given an offer from SWIPE, then disgust that he'd taken it. She knew all about the double agent thing, it didn't work and just made you an enemy of everyone. Or at least whichever party one cared more about. Apart from that, there was almost no way the team hadn't been tracked ever since the interrogation, nothing they had done was safe. Even Trainer Hill wasn't any real sanctuary for them either, it never was. Even then, his outburst only added to the anxiety already piling up on her.
Just perfect, she thought. Parts of the team were in-fighting, things continued to find some way of being utterly compromised, and now there's a member she had exactly zero trust towards and he was putting on a show that she couldn't tell was even sincere. She was unaware that she'd started trembling, wondering who'd bring the next string of crap that'd seemingly prove Cruxias right about his arguments.
---
"Getting in and out's still easier said," Amaranth remarked, her voice low as she looked around. With the police and SWIPE everywhere, most of the usual exits were out. Lots of people also meant lots of potential witnesses to their actions, but it would be a lot of chaos to wade through... and it was mostly in front by the looks of it. If anywhere had a chance at being a good weak point, she had a feeling it might be around the back.
"With so many people though, I'm not sure how well they or SWIPE could handle them being riled up. But if they're all at the door like this... Rachel, do you think you can get a better look? Maybe something around back will be more useful to us."

As I sat there, I listened to Deo and couldn’t help but to grimace a little bit. For someone who was part of law enforcement, he apparently was ready to spill out all manner of stuff immediately. He was with Sandgem PD for several years? Didn’t know that from what I talked to him. Did he stay a slick-sleeve the entire time? Because geez, that was rough intro to the court. And it got me to wonder our chances of what Odd and I had set up being maintained. Though, maybe this was all of Cruxias’ plan. Carefully picked out someone when things started to look too good for us. Odd and I kind of left ripples in the courtroom, making some question a few things that were addressed.
Unfortunately, as the two talked, I come to realize it was far worse than that. The radio, the interrogation back at the headquarters, Deo had threw us under the bus and for what…his grandmother? Am I understanding it right? I quickly thought back to the past few weeks, trying to think back to where everyone was, what Deo did in the meantime. Did he end up calling SWIPE at Ein’s tower? Who was he with? It wasn’t with my group. The situation got even more grim the more I thought. He had this thing ever since those blasted interrogations. Meaning he stayed with us during our escape from the Devon Co building. Mr. Devon was confident that no transmissions was going to get out, so if that held true, then Devon wouldn’t know anything about what we saw from SWIPE’s files. But he could have stayed relatively in touch since then. Like the location of where we have been hiding out at. But then why didn’t they come after us knowing where we were? This court trial started to look like a nastier trap than initially perceived. It wasn’t just to trap the ones they sought to bring in, like Sub and Sol…no, they probably figured some were going to separate off for whatever reason. To better their odds in apprehending all of us altogether. I started to feel more justified leaving Tristen behind to help the likes of Doc Stoja, Laverne, and hopefully GRAY to escape. But then again, those back-up plans started to look pretty bad now. Even if we did escape from this courtroom, from Trainer Hill, and wherever the rest of the team were at in the Viridian Forest, where would we go then? The whole, meticulous, hastily cobbled-together, work-in-progress means of trying to get our innocence proven was upended by the most inconspicuous person in the team, ironic that person being a seven-foot tall, musclebound Luxray hybrid.
I looked back towards Odd for just a brief second, seeing our hastily built defense made under the assumption we could win this start to crumble to Cruxias’ examination and Deo’s apparent temper. I looked at the back of Sol’s, Sub’s, and Reno’s head, trying to see if I couldn’t get a read out of them from their body language. Sol came off looking nervous at the very least by what I could tell. I could feel my agitation flare up and if not for my training over these years, my pressure would have went up along with it, ready to just unleash all manner of hell with Deo first on the hit list, knowing he would stand no chance against me. The implications were honestly was worse than Cruxias coming after me, by a grand margin. I was trying all I could to stay calm, remain seated and while I was successful, it was dicey that if I was going to stay that way.
-----
Freth thought back and unfortunately, she had nothing small on her. Bruisers as big as Mamoswine, and nothing really any smaller than her Absol or the Grovile standing right next to her. She would give a shake of the head ‘no’ as confirmation, but as soon as she did, she looked over towards Darts, eyes going wide when the Pokémon vanished; not really sure what went through but worried for the worst. Relief came back when the Gimmighoul came back, and really, that relief turned into bemusement when she realized you couldn’t really ask for anything smaller. Unfortunately, it didn’t really tell her what was on the other end of the warp tile. A closet or perhaps an occupied room for the duration of the court proceedings.
“So, we found a room.” Freth said to everyone. “Great, clears it right up. Someone is going to need to go over and find out what we’re dealing with. Since there doesn’t seem to be anyone on the other end of the tile, getting in should be fine, but it’s the matter of scouting it and I don’t think all of us needs to go.” Freth suggested. “Not until we know what’s truly over there, anyways.”

Lykas and Odd managed to contain themselves by the time Blizzard was set free from the witness chair and Cruxias called his next victimwitness; Deo. The pair watched, the hybrid almost holding his breath as Odd simply stopped bothering for entirely too long. As Cruxias began to question the massive hybrid, the pair both found themselves fighting to contain a rage neither thought they could feel for another Snagem after so many years and so much the team had survived but this? Deo had accepted a deal from SWIPE during that first interrogation? He’d buckled like a tin can trying to support an Aggron, apparently, at the first sign of trouble and for what? A single loved one who shouldn’t have known anything about him being part of SNAGEM beyond, perhaps, that he had joined? What could SWIPE have possibly done to her that would have been legally justified? The group claiming law and justice was on their side certainly wouldn’t have resorted to something like torturing an old woman for information she was extremely unlikely to have. But for the love of dear old granny, Deo had thrown them all into the Pyroar’s den with a hungry pride surrounding them on all sides.
How much had the hybrid done to hurt their attempts to clear their name by now? How much had he told them? Were they being tracked by that little handheld? Thinking back on it for a moment, Odd recalled Wren saying SWIPE had shown up at Realgam Tower during their venture out to Orre in search of evidence in the team’s favor. Had Deo been the one to call them or could that be blamed on the apparently mad Cynthia they had encountered there?
Lykas’ eyes flashed black for a brief moment as his Hex slipped past his control, likely causing Deo to suffer a severe migraine as the Ghostly energies directed his way unintentionally ripped through him. Odd, briefly, focused on the hybrid’s soul. He could sense the sincere regret in his decision to agree but nothing more than that. Focusing, instead, on the trio at the Defense’ table, he attempted to read Sub, Sol and Reno for their feelings on the matter. So far, all he sensed was a righteous fury from Sol that rivaled his and Lykas, if not exceeded it, and a profound disappointment in the hybrid at the witness stand. If the Snagems managed to get out of this, would Deo be able to justify his decision? Would he be able to put things right with the rest of the team? Given the seething emotions he was barely containing, he felt he already knew the answer but who could truly tell the future? Certainly not him.
Lykas slapped his hands over his face, slamming his eyes shut after only a second or two, taking deep breaths to try and calm himself. He hadn’t meant to release that energy but the sudden, volcanic rage that swelled up when Deo’s betrayal was brought to light had caused him to lose control for that brief instant. All he could think was that if he lost his family, not just Snagem but Odd and Libelle in particular, because of the other hybrid’s inability to sacrifice his own wants for the good of others, then neither Heaven nor Hell would stand between him and getting even with Deo. The Luxray hybrid had better pray to Arceus or whatever other deity he chose that the team got out of this mess.
“He is truly remorseful.” Odd announced quietly to those around him. He didn’t know how much knowing that might help Deo’s case with them, however. It certainly wasn’t doing much to change his mind just now. Casting a look toward Blizzard at last, he met the hybrid’s gaze with his own sightless eyes, not even realizing he had done so, and gave a sigh. He and Blizzard had set the stage for the others to make their own emotional bids, playing toward the humanity they all shared with their literal judge and jury and here was Deo, practically blowing it up in their face with a blatant betrayal. The proverbial knife in their backs had been sunk deep and Deo’s temper might just be the twist Cruxias needed to end them. They would have to hope Sub could somehow salvage this absolute crap storm with his own questions but that would depend on a question he hadn’t thought to ask until now: Did Sub know about this? Had he always known and planned accordingly or was this a sudden revelation to him as well?
Focusing on the Dark One directly at last, he attempted to gauge the man’s reaction to all of this.
~~~ ~~~
Clare shrugged as Aile suggested they try something quickly if they were going to. “No pockets.” They admitted, shrinking the Ultra Ball containing their new Dugtrio down and tucking it inside their shirt, just hoping it would stay put for now. A moment later, Darts had pulled out a strangely familiar coin and, for just a moment, they wondered why it looked so familiar. And then the Giratina hybrid dropped the coin and his Gimmighoul emerged in frantic chase. That was why it looked familiar. It was an ancient Paldean dubloon -the kind Gimmighoul went mad for- and they had been there the day Darts had found both the coin and its keeper.
“Gimmi-!” They called out, trying to calm the little coin gremlin down only for it to be warped away mid-exclamation. “Oh dear…”
They practically held their breath for the matter of seconds the Pokemon was gone for and went it returned, they couldn’t help but to laugh at the absurdity of the Pokemon’s obsession. “You little miscreant…” They giggled at just how unbothered the money-hungry spirit was before calming themself down again. “Do we have anyone capable of scanning the area without needing to see it? Like a Psychic-type?” They asked. “I’d love to offer more than ideas but I’m afraid I'm a bit limited unless someone has all my Pokemon on them?” They pointed out.
"That's true," Rachel said, nodding in agreement with Amaranth's words about getting in and out. "Would it be possible to use the crowd to our advantage?" It wasn't going to be easy to get anywhere with this amount of people she could see crowding the entrance. She looked to Amaranth as she asked to check around the back. "Sure, give me a few minutes to see what I can find," she said, slipping away from the crowd and toward the side of the gym. Her goal was to scout the building from all angles, hoping to find some kind of entrance or opening that they could exploit.
Sub sighed as he listened to Deo, having a vision of the future in that moment, knowing good and well where this was about to go. Cruxias was no fool, neither was Looker nor SWIPE at large, this was a classic case of baiting if there ever was one and Deo was falling into the prosecutor's trap like a Venomoth to a bug zapper. That radio was an ingenious plot, he had to admit. SWIPE would benefit from it no matter what, either Deo used it to betray the team or simply held onto it and they could later use it to show Deo had doubts about his own team's innocence. Either way the moment Deo accepted the radio he sealed his fate, the only winning option was to not play SWIPE's game at all in the first place but Deo could not have known that so he didn't hold too much against him in this case. It did however make Sub feel better about just telling Deo to hold onto the radio. Sure, they could have destroyed it but it still wouldn't have made a difference, he still accepted it. And maybe there was a chance they could have used it against SWIPE, though that was before this entire court ordeal. Alas they couldn't have predicted the future. Too bad they didn't have Aden around.
"Yes, your honor." Sub answered Jenny the First as he stood up, giving Deo a sympathetic half smile before looking down at Reno and Sol. They needed to at least try and salvage this, at the very least to mitigate the damage somewhat. So for this he would finally call on some back up. "I wish to address the prosecutor's statements on mister Deo and then I'd like to allow my Co-Leader to wrap up the defense's closing statement, if it pleases the court, your honor." He said, putting a hand on Reno's shoulder. He knew he could trust Reno to keep a level head, more so than Sol in this moment. After giving Reno a nod he'd turn his attention back to the court at large as he stepped out from behind the table.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you can see clearly that mister Deo is an emotional man, prone to outburst but that is only because he clearly has a big heart. When SWIPE agents brought up his grandmother, someone who is very dear to him, I believe mister Deo was unable to think logically in that moment and instead reacted with sheer survival instinct, thus why he accepted the radio. And SWIPE didn’t just offer Deo the radio, they used his love for his grandmother as a weapon. It is those very same emotions that may have altered his memory of those events as he now once again finds himself in a high stress situation of which you can see clearly now he does not handle well. And as to the prosecutor's claim that he accepted the radio because he had doubts about the team I say his claims are shaky at best, that he was unable to think logically at all. Accepting the radio in that moment proves nothing about how he viewed the team's own innocence, only that he felt he had no other option but to accept their offer if he was to escape that stressful situation. SWIPE pushed him into an emotional corner and he was desperate for a way out." He spoke to the jury before beginning to make his way back to the table, stopping short and turning on his heel before giving one last bit of speech.
"You might even say that him accepting the radio and returning to the team, and staying with the team when he certainly had chances to run, to maybe act as a mole for SWIPE instead showed how comfortable he felt co-mingling with his teammates even after that, that he never feared what they might do to him if they found out. He knew Team Snagem was a forgiving group, one that has only shown him kindness and knew if they found out they wouldn't hold it against him as they have done for other teammates in the past." Sub said as he looked towards various members of his team. Was he speaking to them instead of the jury this time?
Returning to the table Sub would speak again before sitting down, this time directly to Jenny the First. "Now as previously stated I yield the rest of my time to my Co-Leader who will finish up the defense's closing statement. Thank you, your honor." With that he sat down and waited for Reno to rise.
He could hear it all. The maelstrom of thoughts and confusion from everyone as Deo's deal that he had cut with SWIPE was brought to light. Not that Reno was excluded from the small sensation of betrayal that Deo had made such a move, but that was always going to be the feeling no matter when this came up. This wasn't the first time something like this had happened, and it wasn't likely to be the last, but he couldn't take it that personally. They kept their doors open to avoid restricting themselves on who could join and that meant that sometimes you ended up with people who had a background or issues that made it so they might do things for their interest instead of operating purely for the team's interest. But with how close knit their mild isolation made them, it made any time this happened hit harder. Made it hard to not subconsciously blame yourself for letting this happen and then directing the anger towards the offending person if all that person mostly dealt with was you and the others in the group. But now wasn't the time for the team to stew on this. Not with an audience of their peers watching their reactions and judging them based off of it. They needed a lightning rod to draw attention away before their discord got focused on and interpreted as something bad.
He didn't even know he was moving his arm until the sound of metal impacting wood echoed through the room.
Of course he was going to be the thing to draw attention.
Pushing himself to a standing position, Reno would draw his arms back behind his back before speaking. "Sorry. New arm. Haven't quite gotten its quirks figured out. But since I have your attention, I would like to ask: is this truly the strongest evidence the prosecution has to offer?" Reno said, taking a few steps around the defense table to better present himself to the jury and the audience. And also to draw eyes away from the rest of the Snagems for a moment. "Because all I have seen offered in our prosecution for the crime of Snagem allegedly operating in cooperation with Cipher has all been tertiarily related at best. We have an attempt to be provocative with the situation surrounding Dull and the actions that had to be taken. Actions that would be seen as an act of self-defense by most juries, but are being cast as some pre-meditated judge, jury, and executioner bit on an innocent."
Taking a few more paces, Reno would continue with his statement. "Then we have criticisms of a man's efforts to parent in a unique situation that, to be blunt, have not generated results any different than the Pokemon League's own rules have resulted in in a myriad of regions. After all, we have many different trainers starting their journeys at the age of 10, many different Gym Leaders barely into their teens and becoming load-bearing members of a region's trainer infrastructure, and a 9 year old in Paldea as an Elite Four member. I doubt she just immaculately manifested herself into such a position, but we aren't prosecuting her parents or guardians for their efforts." Turning to face towards where Cruxias was currently perched at his table, Reno would give a small sweeping gesture with his right hand towards the prosecutor. "And even Mon-sir Cruxias' Kalos has trainers in their legendary Battle Maison at the grand old age of....four, was it?"
Taking a breath, he would take one single step towards the jury box. He would pass his gaze over the gathered Gym Leaders as he kept the train rolling. "And then we have the last bit of work here. Intentionally needling and penning in a man, prodding away at him until you could trigger an emotional outburst and force him to take what would seem the easiest option just to simply get something resembling relief." Taking a breath as he let the statement hang, he would turn once again to look Cruxias in the eye as a more colder sensation crept its way into Reno's gaze. "How did it feel? Making him feel the same pressure and panic to find relief that he saw what SWIPE told him as much more ominous, as an implied threat that taking this deal would give him the relief that at least his one family member would be safe in those incredibly uncertain times."
Pivoting back towards the general audience, he would sweep his arms open as he said. "All I have left to ask is when will this trial actually focus on the alleged crimes that instigated such a strong response that Deo being reminded of it resulted in a trauma response. Because so far, all I've seen is efforts to construe actions taken that were entirely unrelated to the charges against us in their worst light. Perhaps the prosecution wishes to call me next. Attempt to convince the jury that my mobility aids are made out of dissected Beldums and that I use them to crush Pidgeys in my spare time." He would stride back to the defense table as he finished, every step with his left leg deliberately letting out a loud metallic thunk as the prosthetic leg kept his pace regular. Returning to his seat, Reno did his best to keep a straight back and firm posture, even as internally he began to berate himself for biting and deciding that he had to speak up at this point.
Back with the rest of the Snagems, Aria would bite her tongue as she heard the needling and pushback against Deo. As much as she wanted to berate and take him to task over this sort of a deal, it seemed unwarranted to kick the poor guy while he was down right now. No, that could wait for later, once she could properly take a chunk out of his hide without it feeling like abuse. Or never, if they went to prison. There was no way in hell she was going to end up in the same prison as any of the hybrids.
-----
Listening to Freth speak about sending someone inconspicuous through to try and scout things out, Leslie found her gaze drifting over to the one human in the room. Staring towards Aile, the small hybrid girl would clap a hand on Aile's back and attempt to get her moving towards the warp panel. "As the only human-looking one, you're up Lefty." Leslie called out, taking a step back in case Aile was still here and not in the Gym now. No need to get whacked immediately for trying to influence who went where.
Returning to his seat, Reno did his best to keep a straight back and firm posture, even as internally he began to berate himself for biting and deciding that he had to speak up at this point. Sub's closing statement goes down without very much interruption, anyone who was in tune with the mood of the courtroom did seem to feel a few people on the jury shift with the realization that Deo certainly would have fled rather than face justice despite his obvious betrayal made it unlikely Cruxias' painting of them in a bad light to be as bad as the prosecutor purported. Then Reno interjected, rising to try and run down the list of charges and paint the whole thing as defamatory. Cruxias would sit with the same expression he had on for most of this trial - demure, non-expressive outside of his slight hints at sadness or triumph as the case had gone his way. He weathers the storm of verbal onslaught. And to be fair, Reno had a point about the directness of this case to this point. The strategy of the prosecution, so far, for any onlookers wondering, had been to paint the idea of Snagem as a team in the minds of the jurors. That much would be clear to anyone clued in on courtroom strategem - he was attempting to lay the canvas out on which to paint with the rest of his evidence. The argument could certainly be made that everything the southern-twanged lawyer had brought forth so far had been circumstantial at best, and so even though the Co-Leader had stood up and interjected with maybe just only a moment's thought he raised a good point. And the judge thought so too. "Well?" Jenny asks, turning to Cruxias who was still seated at his desk. "What do you have to say, prosecutor? Anything you want to refute in that little outburst from the defense? An objection you might want to raise?" Surprisingly, Cruxias shakes his head a little bit, white locks waving slightly as he gets to his feet, supporting himself on his cane as usual. "No objections, your honor. Other than assuming I come from Kalos - les grenouilles royales could have nothing further to do with me other than a bit of my accent." He smiles at Reno, clearly jocularly taking the jest for what it was worth. "And I think there is a misconception creeping into the defense's assertion that I would like to clear up. I do not work for SWIPE, nor am I affiliated with them. I merely interviewed and collected evidence from them, prior to this trial, as any good prosecutor worth their salt would do. But it sounds like, if I am to understand the defense's objection, that they would like some more concrete proof of their involvement with the crimes alleged whether that be a connection with Cipher as has come up before, or something else. They would like some more concrete evidence - faits irréfutables." There's a dramatic pause as Cruxias raises a gloved hand, extending one digit. "Far be it for me to drag this trial out, if your honor believes we have a suitable portrait of the team's character established as well as motive, let's get to action then. I will call potentially the most decisive witness to the stand." He casts his hand out, pointing directly at one of the Snagems in the gallery, and certainly not one to be expected considering the set up. "The prosecution calls Monique Ka'ana'ana to the stand."
The cold click-clack of heels fell on a courtroom whose occupants were still, to some measure, trying to gather themselves from the roller coaster experience that was Deo.
Every tap on the floor echoed like she walked on cold concrete, somewhere in the bowels of Flower City. She was used to walks like this, stares from an entire room, her body more exposed than it was on this occasion. Except those rooms usually weren't this brightly lit, there weren't television cameras pumping sixty frames a second of her saunter to the greatest audience in history, and there weren't this many men around—especially one escorting her. Surge's scowl teetered between disdainful and lecherous.
For a moment, as she sat in the chair that was pulled out, she thought of the people she'd met who weren't here, watching on myriad devices. The patrons of Shadow House. A tablet in ChiChi's dance studio in Mesagoza. Employees on their work break at the Virbank Complex. Somewhere, Krasha was probably on tour, too.
She fixed her gaze on Cruxias, his white getup bearing all the symbolic dinginess of King Faba's royal garb, adjusted the microphone down from where Deo had to put it, and exhaled.
"My name is Monique Kaʻanaʻana, former sheriff, former showgirl, and member of Snagem since 2021. And because you have questions, I'm not exactly from here. My world fell apart before I was born and then was killed off at the hands of Ultra Beasts. I've spent my time in this world trying to ensure we avoid the smoggy fate that choked mine." She looked up for the slightest instant, imagining the Dome covering them instead of a normal roof, before turning back to Cruxias. How will he fare talking of a world that isn't his own? she thought.
How will he fare talking of a world that isn't his own? she thought. "So SWIPE mentioned, corroborated by the recording of your own testimony." Cruxias acknowledges, not even flinching slightly as Monique talks about the world that she came from. "A faller, I believe was the term he used. Very poetic. L'orgueil précède la chute." He ambles towards the middle of the court room casually, not taking his bright blue eyes off of the Zoroark hybrid as he does so, seemingly keeping her in his gaze like he was afraid she might illusorily slip away in the moment. "So then, Miss Ka'ana'ana, one might conjecture, given that you gave me a specific year that sets your duration with the team, the invisible message you are attempting to give to the courtroom here is that you were uninvolved with the events and thus the charges facing Snagem prior to 2021. Would you say that is the case?"
I watched Deo make his way back down to his seat, trying to do all I could from not jumping up and taking him out now on principal. It wouldn’t have done any good, sure, but at least it would have been a temporary relief to what I was feeling right now. Sub would then get up, making his minor speech, as did Reno following up, as if this all was planned by them…a joint effort to salvage Deo’s outburst and further discredit all of Cruxias’s accusations, calling out hypocrisy in Reno’s case. Cruxias seemed to take it as if he saw and dealt with this all before. This was nothing new. And I wasn’t sure how Sub’s and Reno’s went over with the court at large, never mind the judge and jury. Every word spoken felt as if an eternity had passed; each excruciating moment of trying to hold myself together and not fly off the handle was testing the limits of my patience.
Cruxias wasn’t done, however. He went on, hardly phased, if any, from that whole speech from Reno and Sub. He goes on to call Monique forward. Okay, I understood now why Deo…but now Monique? What, did she also have a radio of some kind on her too? Christ, I’m not sure how much more I can take of this…
