Phew. Man, was Theo ever glad that didn't turn out like the battle with the Roselia. Poor Regal....He definitely earned a rest. Patting his head head and thanking him for his efforts, the blond returned both him and Beatrice to their pokéballs. He also switched Regal out with the Chespin he'd received from his PC. Alexandra switched her gaze between the road ahead and Marx, making sure she actually went in the right direction towards Connecting Cave and give the proper eye-contact needed for her conversation with Marx. She couldn't help but to squint as they entered the cavern, the passage ahead of them shrouded in darkness. "You could practice training more," she suggested as they moved ahead, her voice echoing. "Try your mettle against a few more trainers before you try going against a gym leader." Of course, practicing could only take you so far, and they never prepared you for everything. It was also possible that battling wasn't Marx's forte, so perhaps focusing on becoming a ranger or contests, as he suggested, would be better for him.
"I think that would be--" Alexandra started, only to stub her toe on an outcropping rock, tripping over it and stumbling. Instinctively she stuck her arms out, flailing a bit, to try and catch herself. "..I'm okay," she muttered, once she'd managed to put a halt to her uncoordinated lurch. Not keen on having a repeat incident the trainer released her starter, the fire on his tail providing a much needed light source. After a moment's thought she turned to her other pokemon and returned all but Xion, the Mawile far with She extended a hand to gently run her fingers through his hair, earning a coo from the primate. "...As I was saying," she continued, inclining her head towards Marx once more. "I think that's a wonderful idea, Marx, but you ought to remember that your pokemon can, and will, disobey you if they get too strong." It wasn't an ideal outcome for any trainer, but considering that, in this specific situation, said trainer was Marx well.. having his pokemon disobey him was the last thing he needed.
While his trainer conversed Caldo took it upon himself to explore a bit of the cave, he made sure not to wander too far, however. It wasn't even a possibility, in fact, for a group of Hoppip were blocking his path. Despite having a disadvantage in numbers he made quick work of the pokemon, and afterwards he scratched his cheek lightly as he looked at the unconscious grass-types that now littered the cave floor.

Marx scrunched up his face a bit, his lips pushed off to the side as he considered Alex's suggestion. "I guess so... How do I make sure I find trainers that aren't too strong, though? Or... i mean, I guess I could learn through losing, too..." he mused, his expression melting into a more considerate one as he looked up at the ceiling. His pokemon likely wouldn't really appreciate that, though. In fact, some, like Sableye, would probably outright revolt. Not that Marx was really thinking about that; he was just considering whether it would be strange to ask total strangers for advice on that kind of thing.
He jumped slightly when Alexandra stumbled, quickly dropping his hands down and moving forward to try and catch her, but she seemed to get her balance. Giving a small exhale of relief, he leaned back, keeping his hands ready just in case. Once he was sure she had recovered, he dropped them back to his side, only for him to quickly lace them behind his head again, looking up towards the ceiling once more. He did look down, though, as she released her starter, humming thoughtfully. Should he let Litwick out to add to the light? ... nah probably not. He could let Basil out, though!
Reaching down, he grabbed his own starter's pokeball, looking to Alex as she continued, and releasing the grovyle while continuing to walk. His starter appeared, visibly annoyed with his arms crossed, but quickly fell into pace with his trainer, too busy staring at the back of his head to realize his friend was also still out of her pokeball.
"Are gyms the only stuff the keep them from disobeying?" Marx asked Alex as they walked, now instead shoving his hands into his pockets. He paused, looking a bit uncertain. "And, uh... is there any way to tell when they're getting close to it...?" he added. He remembered Felix warning him when some of his pokemon were getting close, but he wasn't sure he'd be able to notice on his own. And Felix was Rose's, too, so... he might not really have him with him all the time...

"Hm," Alexandra hummed thoughtfully as she pondered Marx's question, her lips pressing together into a firm line. "Areas with weak pokemon usually have relatively weak trainers," she finally replied, though even she was a bit unsure of her answer. "There isn't much of a sure-fire way of knowing though," she quickly added. She would've added more, perhaps a tip or two that would help Marx assess a trainer, but she stopped when she saw that he was looking up at the ceiling, his mind elsewhere. "You could learn from losing as well. After all, win or lose, you can always take something from a battle." Marx could figure out it out, or at the very least come up with a certain technique that suited him.
Caldo managed to inch back into his original spot with Alexandra's back still turned to him which meant, in his eyes, he'd gotten away with his excursion. He grinned broadly at that idea, and was still grinning when Alexandra turned back around to start heading forward once again. She raised an eyebrow, but saved whatever comment she might've had to herself, her starter was a rather happy little thing, something she'd come to appreciate, there was no reason to question his smile. Wanting to make sure she had all of her pokemon with her, Alexandra turned to look at her side where, just as expected, Xion still remained. Sure, she'd managed to wander off when the excitement of entering a cave, an environment she was happily familiar and comfortable in, but she'd never strayed too far and always zipped back to Alexandra. It was adorable.

She made quick work of the Axew, a fact that the Mega Mawile was more than proud of, and she was just making her way back to her trainer when she noticed that their party had increased their numbers by one. Her eyes widened when she saw Basil and with a trill she rushed over to tackle him, throwing her arms out to encircle him into an affectionate, albeit tight, hug. "Mawiiile~" (You're okay!) Xion nuzzled herself underneath his chin before finally releasing him, her jaws cracking open into what could only be interpreted as a smile. "I got worried when I saw you get taken out by Siemens, I'm.. really sorry about that, by the way. He didn't hurt you too much, did he?"
Alexandra shook her head gently, watching her pokemon interact with Marx's starter. She honestly hadn't expected them to become fast friends, seeing as how awkward Xion was with even being around other pokemon, but she was happy nonetheless. "Uhm..." she paused to think over Marx's question, her head inclining towards the male. "Yes, there is!" How could she have forgotten? "Contests, the ribbons you earn also help with obedience. Ribbons are to coordinators as badges are to trainers." She wasn't able to answer his next question with as much confidence as the first, and in fact took several long seconds to come up with a plausible answer. "No, I don't think there is, or at least not one I've heard of."

Marx scrunched up his face and like a rabbit as he listened to Alex's answer. So there wasn't really a way to know, but there were some places where you could at least gamble with higher odds? Hmmm... "Do you think if I asked, they'd go easy on me?" he asked thoughtfully, and honestly, as though that were actually someone could make a generalized assumption about. Oh Marx. Nature took a little extra care to make him so special, didn't it? While his starter rolled his eyes and began tuning out the conversation, Marx finally brought his gaze over to Alex, dropping his hands as they continued walking through the cave. "Yeah, true," he commented, before grinning, "Especially if any of them are as good of teachers as you! I definitely learned something from our battle!" he added.
Meanwhile, Basil was following, still clearly annoyed, and yet fixated enough that he didn't even notice Xion until she was running at him. His eyes widened and his head whipped around, and he just barely turned and moved one foot to catch himself as she threw herself at him in a hug. "Gro!" "Ah!" He wobbled, but got his balance, blinking a few times and then semi-awkwardly returning the hug. Uh. Well... Pressing his mouth shut and glancing up, he not-so-subtly forced down a bit of a smile. He relaxed more as she let go, though, moving to continue walking along behind their trainers. He made a slight sound when she mentioned the battles, and closed his eyes, but gave a dismissive gesture. "Tch, don't worry about it. I'm fine. Just out of shape," he replied, giving the back of Marx's head a bit of a glare, "My trainer hasn't really been.... training any of us. Unlike you," he added, looking at her from the corner of his eye as he folded his arms over his chest, "It looks like you've ben getting stronger." Jealous? Nooo.... Maybe. Basil wasn't a training junky by any means, but it annoyed him to see his friends getting infinitely stronger, while he just sorta... tagged along behind his trainer. Honestly, the only workout he'd gotten was walking...
Marx glanced back as he heard the pokemon chatting, though, obviously he had no idea what they were saying. He shifted his attention back to Alex, though, and positively beamed as she mentioned contests could help with obedience too. That smile lessened a bit when she admitted there wasn't much of a way to tell if a pokemon was about to be disobedient, but he quickly recovered. "Hehe, great! Maybe I can just do that, then! I mean, I'll still try and battle the gym leader and all... but if that doesn't work out, maybe I can try and get some ribbons instead!" he remarked. And just like that, the tension he'd had over disobedience went away. Maybe a bit... too easily. He seemed to be assuming contests would be easy enough to breeze through and quickly recover control of his pokemon with...
He blinked when he received a text, checking and smiling as he found it was from Cheria again. His smile turned a bit quizzical, almost concerned. Cute? Was it? Huh... Hmm... He slowed a moment, shifting his weight, then shook his head and smiled again, typing out his response, and sending it to her.
