By the First what is that? Invidiath tilted her head to one side, her curiosity and revulsion mixed together and brought a laugh from her bonded.

"It's called a 'tuber' and you'll see me eat some. They're very common. You won't get anything like that though." Miela really only fed her green the best cuts of everything thus far, making certain to be methodical as she could with her depth perception. In fact she'd cut up a number of tubers in her days when she helped out in the kitchens during chores.

"That's easy enough, it's a belt." Miela said after a moment or two of focus, she'd worn enough of them since she'd begun losing weight from stress, and even before that as she'd always been just a bit too small.

Hmm... well it doesn't look as though it would be comfortable, when the time comes we'll have to remedy the need for these... things. The little green gave a snort at it and waved a claw asking for the next.

When R'ul held up the next one Invidiath nearly gave a small trumpet of success before Miela even spoke. Of course she knew what that was, why they were what made her so luxurious and comfortable, what kept the itch away. Hers had been doing a stellar job of it and she'd never once felt the twinge of an itch her siblings and cousins spoke of.

Miela shook her head. "It's an oiling brush. No one should be that excited about an oiling brush Invidiath."

Yes well you've just never experienced the luxury of a good oiling is all. She snorted.

It was cloth. Cloth? It was some sort of cloth, but they were always specific like with the riding strap versus the belt. Despite her attempts to focus properly to guess she couldn't quite put her thumb on it because Invidiath was about preening, going on about how yes, this was the best thing ever.

As if the oiling brush hadn't been the best thing ever.

Part of her wanted to laugh and really when she said "It's a blanket right?" aloud she could feel the groan come from all around. So close to getting all of them right! She pulled the blindfold off her good eye sheepishly and tossed it into the bucket. "That was my bad, we were so close too." she admitted to R'ul and the two dragonettes that were now lounging in the sun sleepily near them. "I'll have to practice a bit more."

Ara had been worried at first that she would prove embarrassingly bad at the actual dragonrider part of being a weyrling, for although she knew that no one in lessons had been a dragonrider any longer than she had, some had been in Weyrs for much longer. Of course, some had spent less time than she in the Weyrs, too, and so she supposed everything more or less equaled out.

Are we ready? Damahath inquired of both Ara and Feidemeth.

This lesson, actually, didn't seem so bad to the erstwhile drudge. True, it felt a little silly to tie a blindfold over her eyes and wait for Damahath to tell her what her partner was holding up (if she could), but Ara didn't mind so much.

Yes, Ara replied, doing her best to think clearly so that the dragon would be able to tell that this thought was meant for her, instead of simply something crossing Ara's mind. She nodded to her partner, Nalacko, and waited.

Damahath was initially mystified by the object Ara's partner held up. It was flat, but stringy, and smelled of human sweat, blood, and sand. The combination of scents reminded Damahath of the day she Impressed to Ara, and the shoes she and the other candidates had worn. She had not seen Ara wear such footwear since then, and did not know the name of it, but she did know that it was for feet.

It is like the strapped foot covering that you wore on the Sands, she told Ara. There is a flat portion with leather ribbons attached to it.

This was not too much of a puzzle for Ara, as it turned out. She guessed, "A sandal?"

Her partner confirmed and rummaged for another object in their bucket. Ara wondered who was going shoeless for this lesson.

There was silence while Ara waited for Damahath to describe the next item to her. Or was she supposed to picture it in her mind? Either would be acceptable, she recalled with a sudden burst of mental clarity. And yet neither occurred.

For her part, Damahath stared at the hand-sized flat object in Nalacko's hand, baffled. It was basically rectangular, with a pattern on one side. The other side was solid blue. She tilted her head from side to side, trying to begin to guess what the object was. She even extended her neck to try to smell it, but it held only a faint scent of human sweat.

She tried to simply show Ara what she was looking at, which was the preferred outcome, but her own confusion and speculation about it made it impossible for Ara to discern what she was looking at.

"Is it a napkin?" Ara finally guessed, unable to make heads or tails of her dragon's mental image. As it turned out, it was not.

What is a playing card? Damahath asked after the solution to their first failed attempt was revealed.

People play card games with them, Ara explained, rather unhelpfully in Damahath's opinion. They have numbers and suits on them, and the games are usually based on getting certain cards. They come in decks, so there are lots of them in every game.

Damahath's muted vague disapproval of card games was cut short as Nalacko held up the next object, which was, again, unfamiliar to Damahath, at least initially.

She shared her mental image of it with Ara, who was equally confused at first, then she asked, "What is it made out of?"

Sorry, she corrected herself, remembering that she should be practicing speaking mentally. What is it made out of?

Damahath once more extended her neck and very lightly nudged the object with her nose. It had some little weight to it, but lots of give. And, this close, it smelled faintly of soap. All of this information she relayed to Ara, who puzzled over it for a few more seconds before seizing on the answer:

"It sounds like a pillow. Though smaller than the ones we put our heads on for sleeping?"

Once again, their partner confirmed that this was so and Damahath rumbled happily in her chest, pleased to have such a clever human.

Their fourth item was not as strange to Damahath as the playing card had been, but she was definitely stumped by it at first, for it looked like a rock, but something about it said "not a rock" to the dragon.

It is a long-ish not-rock that smells like dirt. It is maybe the size of a human hand, she told Ara while simultaneously attempting to let Hers see the thing she was looking at.

Certainly Ara had no doubt that there were rocks fitting that description all over the Weyr, but Damahath had been fairly emphatic that she was not looking at a rock, even though she couldn't offer any sort of suggestion as to what she was looking at. Thankfully, Ara did not have to make her guess based solely on the little gold's verbal description.

"It's a tuber," she told Damahath and Nalacko. Faranth knew she'd peeled, diced, and mashed enough of the things in her life to recognize one instantly.

Humans eat them. They can also be heated up and carried in pockets for warmth on cold days, she explained to Damahath.

Do dragons eat them?

I'm sure you can, Ara replied. But I think you'll grow faster if you stick to meats. Nobody has said anything to me about dragons eating plants.

Damahath decided that was good enough for her, and that she was not interested in eating tubers. Ara signaled that she was ready for their final item.

Oh, I've seen this, Damahath told Ara as Nalacko brandished a playing card. She wasn't sure that they were supposed to use the same item twice, but she didn't care to make an issue of it. Since Nalacko did not turn the playing card around so that she could see the back this time, she forgot that its back should have been solid blue, and with less than her usual care she showed Ara a picture of a white-ish rectangle.

Ara, not actually sure what she was looking at, other than a white-ish rectangle, considered the objects they had already been shown, since this was apparently a repeat. Without any detail to go by other than shape and color, Ara supposed, "It's the pillow again?"

No! Damahath exclaimed. It was the other thing. The "playing card."

"Ah," Ara said, rather than criticize her dragon. Aloud, she could hear her partner telling her the same, and wondering whatever had made her guess that it was the pillow. "I wasn't sure. Shall we switch?"

She untied the blindfold and passed it to her partner, and then picked up her own bucket, which seemed to have different items in it.

"Ready?"

"So it's okay that we're going first?" Kinye asked for what was likely the dozenth time as she put on the blindfold, waving her hand in front of her face - as though she herself wouldn't know it was there. It was her hand after all.

"Ready, Metisoth?" she turned her head towards where she knew her dragon was sitting, looking towards A'ide and Elpisath dutifully. I'm ready, she said, then waited for the first item to be held up. Perhaps they'd decided to go easy on the pair, because Metisoth knew what it was immediately - and in turn, Kinye could too: "Oh! That's an oiling brush! Maybe one we used this morning," she added, in jest. Though it was still likely.

"Did...you change it?" Kinye wasn't sure if Metisoth had been so on the ball that she simply informed Kinye that it was, once again, the same object. In fact, Kinye leaned into her (albeit fresh and still weak) bond with her green to make sure Metisoth wasn't simply delighted to have gotten the first one right so quickly.

It's a different brush than the last one, can't you see that? Metisoth briefly wondered if Kinye couldn't tell the difference between the two brushes - because they'd very much not been the same one. What details would have helped in focus for Hers to see the distinction?

"If you did, I guess it's another oiling brush?"

Clearly the oiling brush had been a touch too easy on them and it had given both girl and dragon a little too much confidence in themselves to tackle whatever was held up next.

'Whatever' was the best description for it, because Metisoth.....had never seen whatever it was in her short little life. In spite of this, she tried to pick out the best edges and distinctive shapes it had - not that she was a good judge of what would particularly help Kinye with recognizing it.

After a minute of a green dragonet squinting and a bit of a headache, Kinye declared "I have no idea," with a small frown. "Put that one aside so I can see it after?" Please?
