Finding a good spot, the two settled down, looking over as Lucy curiously hunted around for pokemon to battle. Mel pulled her legs up and wrapped her arms around them, frowning a bit in concern. "Do you think it's bad I taught her Focus Punch?" she commented in concern, "It looks like it's causing her a lot of delay in attacking..." Brian shrugged, bending his legs and resting his arms on his knees, his hands clasped together with his legs splayed a bit. "Nah, I dont' think so. It'll probably do her really well in the long run," he commented, shrugging, "Besides, she's got those potions, and she's not taking that much damage. She should be fine."

Mel nodded a little, then sighed, pulling her bag around, and withdrawing some of the books she had got before. "Alright, well... we might as well see what the other's can learn," she commented, flipping through her pages a bit. "Let's see... Could always teach Z a few moves. I could use that last heartscale to teach Phia Giga Drain... Oh! And I could use that TM to teach Kiwi Dig. Gosh, these heartscales are useful, though..." she murmured, going through the options. After a bit of contemplation, Mel decided. She put her book down and started going through the items her father gave her, smiling a bit as she saw them. She blinked, though, as she pulled out two fo the pokeballs, then jumped as she remembered her dad telling her about them. She looked up, locating Z and Phia. "Phia! You done eating?" she called over to the pokemon, smiling and waving the pokemon over. The sember eyed her uncertainly, but started making her way over. Mel called Lucy over as well, and got onto her knees, pulling out everything she needed, and making sure her starter was still set on health while she had her close.
Once she had everything out, and she released all her pokemon, she began doling out the items. It was quite a bit, but she methodically went through, and once she was sure everyone had what they needed, let her pokemon resume roaming for a bit. At least until Lucy was done training.

With everyone a little more set, Mel leaned back on her hands. Unfortunately she couldn't keep Blue out, but hopefully once she was able to find a fish bowl or something, she could work around that. Something durable, for battle... but light weight enough that it wouldn't kill her back. It was too bad finding something that could also be reduced in size was.... probably too high an order. She shook her head a bit, leaning back against one of the hedges, and watching her pokemon. She noticed Kiwi hopping, occasionally, along the grass, apparently watching Lucy as she trained and battle. Occasionally it would turn and hop in another direction, and appear to observe Z, and then Phia, and then go back to watching Lucy. Maybe Brian was right... Maybe it was a learning robot. And maybe she should try training with it, at some point... test how it did in battle and everything....

It didn't take long for Mel to get bored. She watched Kiwi watch her pokemon, then she watched her pokemon, and finally she stretched, fidgeted, looked up to the sky, stretched again, and finally slumped. "Alright well I'm bored," she muttered, deflating into the hedge. Brian raised his eyebrows and glanced at her, then jabbed a thumb in the general direction of Santalune. "Want to go get us some food and check in on the gym? I can keep an eye on the pokemon if you want," he offered. Mel blinked, then looked at him thoughtfully. "... Y'know that's actually a good idea," she remarked, then smiled. "Thanks Bri." He lifted his eyebrows and gave a nod, settling back as she pushed herself up and stepped over his legs to head into the city.

Brian was almost tempted to lay down and take a nap as he waited, in fact, he got to the point where he was laying down. Upon noticing Kiwi hopping away, however, he quickly scrambled up, and walked over to pick the little robot up. Probably better he stay awake-- he didn't want Mel getting back and scolding him for slacking when he said he'd watch her pokemon. He was preeeeettty sure Z and Lucy could handle the others, honestly, but.... still. Keeping Kiwi with him, he walked back over to the spot and sat down, glancing up, when, a little while later, Mel returned. She seemed to be eating a protein bar, a bag on her wrist, a large glass bowl in her hand, and a pamphlet she was reading between her fingers.

Mel nodded, looking over, and then reaching back for a pokeball. "And in the meantime..." She smiled, releasing Blue into the fishbowl. The goldeen was still a moment, before he released a swirl of water that quickly filled the bowl, allowing him to begin drifting around, looking at it appraisingly. "Got that for you, Blue," Mel remarked, pulling out her own food, "So you don't have to worry 'bout floppin' 'round 'n such in battle." Blue eyed her a moment, then seemed to nod, exploring the bowl some more. 'I see... Thank you, Melinda,' he mused.

Melinda settled back and popped open her own box of food, taking a breaded chicken bite and tossing it into her mouth. Lucy continued battling on with a few more pokemon, before she seemed to decide that it was enough, and came bounding back, running on all fours, and then slowing about halfway there. Mel chewed her food, but blinked a bit when she noticed her starter change her pace. Lucy stood up on her back feet, then straightened,a nd then.... glowed? "Oh my god." Mel shoved her food at Brian, scrambling to her feet. "Lucy's evolving!""Hufhga?" Brian blinked, mouth full of noodles, and looked over, trying not to drop his or Mel's food in the process. He blinked a few more times, then quickly shoved the rest of the noodles into his mouth, and carefully set the food down. Phia, who had came over with the rest of the pokemon, eyed the two boxes, but moved over to look at the hedge hungrily when she felt Z come up behind her, and eye her carefully.
Mel, meanwhile, was very much distracted watching her starter evolving, the bright light engulfing Lucy, and then fading to reveal her evolved form. "Mon!" Lucy greeted, throwing her hands up. Mel beamed, dropping down, and sweeping the pokemon into a hug. "Oh congratulations, Lucy! You evolved so quickly!" she praised, pulling back and grinning, "I'm so proud of you."
She picked the pokemon up, resting her on her hip, noticing she was a bit heavier now. "Come on, you've earned a meal. And if you want, we can go challenge the gym after. I can't believe you've evolved already..."

Mel was still marveling over her starter's evolution. She almost forgot to eat, just watching her in wonder. Was it normal for a starter to evolve this quickly? This was the first time they'd even trained together! Maybe the chimchar line just evolved fast? She would have to check into it. She had to shake the thoughts off and remind herself to focus on eating, like her pokemon were, so that they could go into the city after. It seemed Lucy was interested in testing herself against the gym, and Mel certainly didn't want to hold her up. She may have had her own, other priorities, but seeing Lucy evolve like that... It got her a little excited for all this gym business, too. It was like getting to test yourself, and you and your pokemon's progress. It was a progress test! And she wanted to see how she and Lucy faired.
Once everyone had finished eating, Mel quickly gathered everything, and everyone, up, and recalled her pokemon, other than Lucy. She hesitated in recalling Z, but, given his size, and the fact that they would be going into a gym, it seemed like it might be a good idea to keep him in his ball, for now. So, with a mournful apology, she recalled the legendary, but perked up as Lucy hopped onto her shoulder and gave a chime of consolation. Right. They had a battle to do, after all.
Making her way into the city, Mel looked around, then headed straight for the gym. She had managed to scout it out a bit earlier, and had read up on it when she got her pamphlet. Brian hesitated outside, however. Pausing, she sighed, then turned and looked back at Brian. "Really, Bri? You'll be on the other side of the stage from her, you know," she commented, folding her arms over her chest. Brian quickly threw his hands up in defense. "I know! But she'll probably come over to give you your badge and stuff. I don't want to break out in a sweat or bolt just because she gets closer. Besides, I'm sure you and Lucy can handle this yourselves," he replied, giving a nervous grin. She stared at him, but then rolled her eyes and turned away. "Alright, alright.... fine," she drawled back, before heading inside, and challenging the gym. Hopefully this would be about as easy as she thought it would be...

Well, that sure was a short fight. Viola returned her defeated Vivillion before snapping a picture of the victor. "It's not often I see a Monferno! She packs quite the punch!" Viola commented, then approached Mel with the prize. "Here you go. You've earned this. I also want to give you this tm, though i didn't even have the chance to show you the move." she smiled, handing over the badge and tm for Infestation. Once that was done, she left to heal up her pokemon to prepare for future challengers.

Mel had her hands over her mouth, her eyebrows raised, and her eyes wide at the end of the battle. Sure, yes, she had expected the first pokemon to go down pretty fast, though even then she was a little surprised, but both of them? "Bloody hell," she breathed, lowering her gaze to her pokemon, "That was incredible.""Mon!" Lucy chimed in agreement, though she seemed just as awed as Melinda had been. They both shook their heads a bit, and snapped back to attention as Viola spoke up. She beamed at her comment, giving a proud look down to Lucy, who swelled up in satisfaction of her work done, trying not to look too overly confident about the victory.
"Thank you, Miss Viola," she replied appreciatively, giving a bit of a bow-curtsy as she look the items. She seemed to inflate as she looked at them, then gave another appreciative nod and remark to the gym leader, before turning and gesturing to Lucy. The monferno leaped up onto her back, and the two headed out.

"Woohoo!!" Mel couldn’t help but give a leap of joy as she exited the gym, releasing all the pent up excitement. They won! EASILY! It was so exciting! She flashed Lucy another grin, then looked down at the badge once more. Brilliant… She looked up, blinking and smile fading a bit to a curious look as she noticed a distinct lack of someone. She frowned. ”Would have hoped he’d at least be here to congratulate us,” she remarked, placing a hand on her hip. ”Mon. Monferno,” Lucy commented. Mel gave a glance back at her. ”Yeah, probably.” Of course, she didn’t actually understand Lucy without Z there to translate, not perfectly, but she felt she got the gist of it. Speaking of, though, Z could actually probably help find Brian, releasing the Zygarde, she gave him an apologetic look, knowing that he probably already knew what she was releasing him for.
And, indeed, he turned, searching, though she was fairly sure it wasn't just with his eyes. He had a pretty good awareness of his surroundings most of the time, though it was even better any time they were out of the city, and around nature. Which was... unfortunately pretty rare. 'Over here,' he remarked leisurely, gliding off towards a couple buildings. Mel followed at a light jog, following into pace beside him, before slipping back as he moved to an alley.
"Oh my god... did he really..." she muttered, pressing a hand to her forehead. She rolled her eyes and shook her head, but followed Z to the back of the shops. There were a few dumpsters and a large tree back behind them, on the other side of a cement raise that kept the concrete ground from the earthen land beyond the buildings. "Seriously Brian. Yew this scared've bumpin' into a girl?" Mel asked, spotting him sitting between the two dumpsters on the short wall under the tree. He looked up from a hand held game device, a popsicle in his hand, then glanced off to the side, and then back at her.
"What? I... just wanted some privacy to play my game," he muttered, utrning the device off and standing up to tuck it away, "Anyway, how'd the battle go?" Unable to help herself, Mel smiled, and flashed another proud look at Lucy, who beamed. "One-shot K.O.ed Viola's entire team," she reported back. "Whoa! Nice! Remind me not to get into a fight with you, Lucy!" he commented, grinning. Mel smirked and raised an eyebrow at him, and he gave a sheepish grin. "Either of you, actually," he added.
She rolled her eyes a bit, then nodded back. "C'mon, we can check out where to go next," she suggested.

Brian followed, but was clearly looking around as they stepped back out onto the street. Mel raised another eyebrow at him. "What? You get some admirers or something while I was battling, Bri?" she asked, torn between amusement, annoyance, and slight concern. Brian gave her a look. "No, just..." He stopped, making a bit of a face as he realized there was no real defense. Melinda rolled her eyes a bit, but didn't tease him. Instead, she changed the subject to provide a distraction, while Lucy happily hopped onto Z to get a free ride, and relieve her trainer of the weight.
"Well, do you know where we ought to go next?" she asked, and Brian, after shifting and looking around a second longer, looked back at her. "I think Geosenge or something like that. Maybe it's Cyllage? We have to go back through Lumoise either way, I think," he replied, stuffing his hands in his pockets. He scrunched his mouth off to the side and looked up. "I kinda wanna go for a run..." Mel gave him a look of her own. "Well you should, after all the junk food you've been downing," she replied back.

Brian stuck his tongue out in retort, and might have said something, but a body suddenly appearing before them made them both stop. Mel threw up her hands, nearly running into the person, and blinked and looked up at the guy grinning at her. Raising her eyebrows, she took a step back, very much ready to punch the guy if he tried anything. Not in an angry way, just... reflexive self defense, way. She let him speak first, though. "Sorry!" he apologized, tossing a pokeball in one hand, "But I saw you take down Viola's pokemon earlier! I was thinking of challenging her myself, but I figured, hey, what better way to test myself than to go up against the person who just pummeled her pokemon to a pulp?"
Mel exchanged a look with Brian. Well that was a bit of an... exaggeration, but.... "So? Whaddaya say? Wanna battle?" the guy asked, still grinning.

Mel looked at Brian a moment, and, despite his uncertain look, turned to the man and gave a nod, her hands on her hips. "Sure! I don't see why not," she decided, offering a smile. The guy's grin grew even more, and he stepped back. "Alright! Why don't I start us out, then?" he offered, tossing his pokeball up into the air. Mel blinked as a bug pokemon was released. She paused, then pulled out her pokedex. A... volbeat, huh? Well alright, they could handle that, then! "Go ahead, Lucy," she suggested, flashing a smile to her starter.
The guy blinked, his smile suddenly disappearing. "H-hey, wait! You're not going to use some cheap tactic and use type advantages against me, are you!?" he asked, lifting his hands up as his eyes widened. Mel only gave a grin back. "What? I thought you wanted to see how I 'pummeled Viola's pokemon into a pulp'?" she shot back, giving a playful wink as Lucy landed, crouched down, and then leaped forward with a fire punch.
