Well yeah part of it is true u.u I remember that when my father lost his job and my mom became the only provider for the family, my dad began to be all stress-out and stuff. Also now that I think about it, even though when married, women tend tobe the ones that do most (if not all) the house work, men are the ones that 'sacrifice' themselves the most (there are exceptions) but ussually, in a good marriage, the man would be always trying to make his wife happy, etc

Although I'm not saying that women don't do the same n.nu...

I'm just curious, dragon_sword, but what country do you live in? (since it was a major part of your argument.)

Wow, all very interesting so far.
Id like to agree that this is an incredibly complex topic, and without a defenition of "easy" it can become incredibly broad aswell.

I am female, and I think that it is easier to be a woman.

The main reason I think this is because of the way that I have seen people I know react to certain situations.
I think that yes, there is always underlining expectations on you depending on your sex, and I also admit that different countries have incredibly different opinions on this matter but:

I believe that a man strives to the expectations held by their family, their friends, their partners, their employers, their community...ect.
There is a version of them that they believe that they should 'be' based on all of the people listed above.

But women? In my opinion, I believe that the hardest expectations pressed apon a woman, are put there by herself. They say that there is no tougher critic that a woman when she looks at herself in the mirror.
A woman (again, in my opinion) wants to present herself nicely, she wants to become as intelligent as her mind will let her, she wants to have independence, yet desires to be depended on by others.

I mean, how many women do you know that CONSTANTLY take others problems onto their shoulders, when they really couldn't care less?

She wants to be respected, she wants to be liked, she wants to be known, she wants to be loved...etc etc

I am not trying to imply that men do not have the same thoughts of themself, but what im trying to say is that in my opinion a man has many many many critics, which makes living up to expectations hard, a womans greatest critic is herself, so if she doesn't reach a certain expectation of herself...only she will know.

Id love to hear what you all think of my point of view.

Well, the biggest question is whether the number or quality of critics in your life really determines how easy/difficult things are for you. Even a man with many critics in his life may have it easy enough to ignore those critics or not try to appease them all. Likewise, a woman with her only critic being herself may find that self-criticism makes her life far more difficult than it should be.

Do you think it is easier in society today to be a male or a female? Maybe it is equal?

Include social life, physical attributes, sterotypes etc. in your responses (: I am sure we will have very different opinions from people.

So, post your thoughts!

I think we're both equal. Guys have their reasons. Random erections, dealing with OUR periods. All that good stuff. Paying for dates. Us girls have our reasons, too. We have our periods (guys should be lucky they don't have to bleed downstairs evil ), mood swings, keeping in shape. The girls stereotype, being wusses, needing protection and being really peachy. We are actually really strong, those of us that choose to not be the stereotype. Guys are known to be strong, and keeping that reputation isn't easy, I understand. I salute those guys that choose to do ballet and to be sensitive. heart

Ugh I hate periods. But yeah guys do have to deal with us during our mood swings. Though most of the girls I know have hat pretty much under control and are careful around their periods... I'm just really uneasy during that time of the month... Yes, sensitive guys are great, but some times a nice stong, non-sexist guy is better. Girls still have to deal with guys just going and treating us girls like toys and breaking our hearts... my last ex was a sexist jerk who lied constantly to me and though I knew what he was doing I still loved him and couldn't bring myself to break up with him. We had been dating for almost 2 years and I find out that he never even loved me... he had lied to me all that time... used me. Like I said before, sure some guys get used but girls just have a huge chance of snagging a perverted sexist freak for a BF. Then there's also the guy that goes too slow in the relationship and even after a month you haven't even held hands and you're starting to think of when to end the relationship that seems to be a plane for Hawaii that wont go any where... stare

why do you think so, aang?

to me it seems like a tradeoff.

girls make less money, and that hurts.

we also face condescension and belittling.

guys are judged more harshly though. if a girl and guy commit the same crime, such as a teacher making out with a student, the girl gets probation and the guy gets ten years.

that just happened in the same state in 2006.

From a girl's point of view, I think I have it easier being female - I'd hate to have to live up to the sterotypical standards of males - that is, being good at sports, jocular among friends, not sensitive, etc. But then again, if I were a guy, maybe I wouldn't care. ::shrug:: It's hard to say.

stereotypes come up a lot in this discussion, so here are some questions to spur on the discussion.

Since stereotypes exist, do they make being a guy or girl easier or harder?
Should we be living up to stereotypes or breaking them?
Should we be worrying about stereotypes at all?

I say screw stereotypes. They only make life harder for both guys and girls. But I also noticed that your sexuality also plays a role in how hard it is for a guy or girl. Like if you're a girl who isn't strait some people will do some pretty nasty things to you. (like spray you with white board cleaner...) It's just not right. Which I also have to think that for a bi or homosexual guy it'd be hard for them a little. Same as it would for a lesbian or bi girl.

That's their own fault though. WE don't try and persuade them to be guy-like in order to be "equal." They do it themselves. Nobody's telling them they have to do it, so nobody's going to marvel over how much "work" they're doing trying to play both genders when nobody asked them to. I know i don't. In fact I'd prefer them to be less man-like. That's kinda creepy if you think about it, esp. if you're straight like me.

Is it their fault that they've been oppressed and treated as second-class citizens for centuries? Sure, nobody's telling them to go around looking for equal footing as men, just like nobody told the blacks to go around looking for equal rights.

It's not someone telling them to do something, it's them WANTING MORE FOR THEMSELVES AND FROM SOCIETY. In a world where vast sums of women are still denied basic human rights and freedoms, where even in super-power status nations women are denied equal pay or job opportunities.

Is it harder to be a woman in today's world? Yes, absolutely, but not because they have to play two roles, although that's certainly a facet of the issue. It still stems from a world that does not accept women on the same level as it accepts men, and a world where you have to work and struggle twice as hard if you want to make it half as far.

Thank you for saying this. It's completely true
