You thought an earthquake was bad? Well, there are bigger problems now, because it's panicked the widlebeest herd the pride was following and started a stampede - right towards them!

Event: roll a 1d4!
(For anyone who did not fall in the fissure, or who thought it was safe and climbed out.)

1. You hear the call to get down, but aren't fast enough, and you're knocked down by a fleeing wildebeest and stepped on by one or more others, and will be left with deep gashes and at least one broken bone. [Death is an option, if any player finds that appealing.]
2. You scuttle to safety, but don't quite get your head down in time, and are clipped and gashed by the hoove of a leaping widlebeest.
3. You reach the crack, but hesitate before jumping in, only to be clipped by a wildebeest and knocked in, and may sustain an injury up to a cracked bone.
4. You make it to the relative safety of the fissure and hunker down just in time to avoid any injuries.

After she finally got out of the crack she'd fallen into with her injured paws aching and making tears spring up in her eyes. She whimpered as she got out and then looked around in time to see something charging at them, and they were coming quick.

So, as fast as she could, Afsar went back down into the fissure and hunkered down, tucking her face in her front paws. She just prayed one of them didn't fall on her, or another lion didn't either.

He'd hit his head pretty hard on a rock in the fissure and, so far, he hadn't gotten up yet. Dwa didn't know it, but he was safe from the stampede above. He was definitely going to feel things in the morning.

High above the ground, Khapha saw the danger before the lions down below. She gave a startled squawk of alarm and pulled her wings close to her body to try to dive to warn them, but she was a vulture and her flight wasn't meant to be fast in any way, shape, or form. She realized too late that she wouldn't make it in time so she unfurled her wings and hovered in lazy circles despite her anxious emotions. She tried calling out to Ukufana, but her voice didn't carry over the rumbling of the earth.

Rising from the crevasse, Ukufana groaned softly as she lifted her head. Even though she had a bit of padding to her fall it had still not been a comfortable landing. No sooner had she risen than she heard the call to find cover and a quick glance around told her why. Stampede.

Quickly crawling, she moved over the other lionesses that had tumbled down to a deeper part of the crack, hiding her whole body from the thundering hooves.

---

The new rumbling didn't feel right. It wasn't as deep or as sudden and it seemed to be growing louder. Umkhombo called out for those that hadn't fallen into the crack to get into it, and it was really the only safe place from what was thundering towards them. Faust tried to herd some of the shell shocked lionesses towards safety as the stampede descended upon them and barely got them in before he dove in as well. He thought he was safe but the area of the crack they were in was rather shallow, and despite crouching he was still exposed.

A sharp blow to his head stunned him, tossing him to the side so he leaned against the edge of the crack. Blood ran from the gash above his left eye, blinding him for the time being as it flowed hot and free down his face.

She probably shouldn't have run so close to the edge, in retrospect.

Melokuhle heard the call just as she'd made it over. Head swiveling around, she stared with widening eyes at the herd making its way straight towards them. There was no running away except... down. Snapping her gaze back down, the lioness hesitated for the briefest of seconds. The fall would be unpleasant... but at least she'd be able to catch herself, unlike the others. So with a determined look, she crouched and start jumping-

Only for a wildebeest to clip her across her side. Evidently she'd waited too long. With a strangled yelp, Melo went tumbling down, momentum thrown completely by the hit and no longer capable of judging her fall.

With a thump, she landed on the ground beside a few of the other lionesses, winded and gasping. For a moment, all she could register was the pounding on her side and heavy footsteps above her. At least she'd gotten out of the way of the wildebeest, she supposed. With a grimace, the tan lioness pushed herself up.

Or tried to, as with a gasp of pain, she flopped back down. Great, the jerk beast had injured her. Twisting her head around, she tried to gauge the damage at a glance. She didn't think it was too bad. A very painful bruise at best, or a cracked shoulder blade at worst. It was going to make traveling obnoxious though, she thought with a grumble.

((Rolling for Pahana & Kokulzawa

Pahana - 3 roll
Kokulzawa - 2 roll))

The white lion was lucky. The initial shout to run caught him just as he was clambering to his paws. The hole, the fissure the ground had opened up to was the best place to go. He bolted for the gap in the ground, but looking down at the lions already down there he hesitated.

That hesitation cost him and just as he was about to dive in when a wilderbeest charged past forcing him to stumble down in to the pit. It was a most unceremonious deposit in to the depths. He roared his outrage but at least he was safe. The wilderbeest had struck him hard enough that his rear hurt, his scrambling tumble in to the fissure had caused some scrapes and he was fairly sure he had lost a claw. Nothing felt broken but maybe that would change when he managed to get up off his side. He’d landed on his side the air pushed from his lungs.

——

The brown female ducked. Her reaction was slow though as she pulled her cubs beneath her. She shuffled as quickly as she could towards the hole, but no where near swiftly enough. A leaping wilderbeest knocked her over as she shoved the cubs down, its hoof gauged across her back and she smelled her own blood.

She called out unhappily and rolled down in to the fissure. She was bloodied and bruised but at least she was safe.

Yikma bint Nesf was toward the back of the group, keeping her eyes and ears out for threats. Her dreams had been particularly troubling of late, and it had the silver-eyed lioness grumpy and feeling like she needed to help protect the less...martially experienced, shall we say, of the pride. Thus her...somewhat sentinel position at the flank.

Unfortunately, there was nothing she could do about threats from the earth itself. She could only cling to the ground as it shook beneath her, stare horrified at the gash opened into the earth...and then something else. A call to 'get down,' but as far from the crevice as she was, her mad dash wasn't fast enough. She was knocked down hard, bellowing with pain as hooves bruised and tore her, sharpening to a shriek as a foreleg broke with a sharp crack beneath the weight of one of the stampeding beasts.

Desperate, she rolled upright and scrabbled along the ground as best she could with her three good limbs, nearly blacking out each time the broken leg was jostled.

---

Tufani, for all that she was one of the older lionesses in the group, still had sharp reflexes and a fair burst of speed. She shot towards the crevice, scrambling to keep her feet as she slid down inside. She hunkered down inside, panting with adrenaline, her eyes gleaming with it. Not everyone was so lucky, and she wondered how many of the lionesses would be out of commission for the near future.

Cerobi felt something pulling beneath her and realized she had landed on someone's tail.. but the angle was strange, which explained the crushing feeling. These realizations came with the understanding that she really wasn't alone when she fell, so she finally opened her eyes and took in what was going on around her.

"What-"

She struggled to disentangle herself from the group that had fallen closely with Giruvegan. The ache all over her body distracted her long enough that she didn't realize something else was happening until she saw Ukufana look above them and immediately seek shelter again.

"Giruvegan!" she cried, transferring all her panic to her silent brother rather than focusing on the earthquake or stampede themselves. Focusing on him would keep her grounded in this chaos, even if his state wasn't going to make her feel any better.

Nenkani's decision to stay on the ground until the shaking stopped turned out to be a very bad idea. She felt the change in the movement beneath her but she didn't fully register what was happening until it was too late. For an old lady, she moved surprisingly quickly, getting to her feet and hurrying for the safety of the fissure- if she hadn't started on the ground, she might have made it.

Unfortunately, the wildebeests reached her before she reached the edge and she was knocked back to the ground. Whatever happened next was a mystery to her as she mercifully blacked out.

Chaos reigned.

Most heard his warning, saw the wildebeest, and reacted in time to get to the relative safety of the fissure, but Umkhombo himself had hesitated, eyes scanning for Khazine, for Nesf, for his grandmother, for cubs.  But wherever they were, there was no time left.  The herd was bearing down on them fast, and so he slid down into the crack by Ahlaq and Faust, though he couldn't help from sticking his head up to look - not the best idea, as a hoof struck him in the head and made his vision spin...but not before he'd glimpsed the prone form of one of the Omama, so close to the edge but not close enough.

Khombo heaved himself up out of the fissure and threw his much larger body over hers to shield Nenkani from the worst of the onslaught.  Hooves gashed into his flesh instead of hers, and bones gave and cracked and broke under the abuse.

Ayana slowly made her way back to the top. She had already hurt her paw. What else could possibly happen now? She popped her head over the edge just as the warning came across to her, but it was already too late. Ayana was clipped by a wildebeest hoof over her head. The impact caused her to lose her grip on the edge and gall back into the gorge. As she tumbled back into it, several over wildebeest trampled over her, breaking her bones and causing gashes over her body. She finally landed back to the stop she was at before, only now she was bleeding and completely unconscious.

((rolling for Umutsuz ))

The dull sounds of yelling and rain were slowly coming around to his ears. Giruvegan felt his head ache, his shoulders ache, and...everything just hurt. The taste of muddy water was the first thing to push him towards consciousness, but hearing his sister's panicked voiced pulled him all the way to wakefulness.

"Ce....cerobi?" he gasped, spitting out bits of muddy water that had begun to pool at the bottom of the crack. The rain was slowly going to fill his crevice if they didn't do anything about it... "What....we need to..."

And then he could hear more panicked cries, the unmistakable sound of a stampede. "N-no!" The Inselelo was doing himself in, trying to push himself upwards into a position where he could protect as many of the lionesses as he could. The trouble was that he could barely keep himself up right, and he leaned on Cerobi as he willed himself to ignore the pain, ignore...everything. "Stay down," he coughed, shaking away the slick mud as he started to gain control of his legs again.

Umutsuz did hear the call to duck, to run, to get out of the way. The rate of the rain fall had not changed, however, so the ground beneath her had become completely slick with the sopping wet grass offering little friction for the busisa to keep her paws beneath her. As she swiveled to get out of the way of the trampling beasts, she slipped. Two-toed hooves sliced into her skin, and she felt a hind leg snap almost instantly. The pain was overwhelming, and she felt herself yelling in pain and fury. The sound was drowned out from hoofbeats and rain, and more hooves were crushing her into the ground. She felt the warmth of blood running down her hip, her tail crushed and unable to move. Her eyes were wild with fright and anger, and she did her best to keep her face protected and also out of the slippery mud that had caused this situation.

It took her a moment to realize that she wasn't alone. Groans came from all around, sounded by bodies squirming beside her in the rift. The bodies of her sisters writhed in the mud, and above her... Mokosh's bleary eyes went wide, ears flattening to her skull at the sight of hooves flashing above. She became aware of several sounds all in the same instant: the pounding in the earth that matched those flashing hooves. Screams in the gorge, bellowed warnings about the stampede. And the shrieks of her sisters above, those that hadn't been...lucky, she guessed? to have fallen into the earth.

Those shrieks near broke her. Mo lunged for the edge of the fissure, hauling herself end over end until she hung bodily out of the crack. Her eyes widened a second time, gasp catching in her throat at the sight of sodden forms struggling in the dirt. So many of them hurt! The lioness focused on the closest, flinging her paws out toward the darker female. "Grab my paw!" Mo called, futile as it felt. She could barely hear herself talk. And that awful drumming filled her skull!

As Mokosh sought to lock eyes with the lioness dragging herself closer to her outstretched grasp, she neglected to keep track of the many wildebeests. A hoof caught her sharply, cracking audibly off of her skull. The impact whipped Mo's head to the side, dragging a roar of pain from between clenched teeth. Her claws clenched, twitching as they dug into the ground - but still reached out for the pride-sister she'd never met.

Excited Apathy

Her ears were ringing, and Ezinothuzi was slowly coming to realize that she hurt more than she had in a long, long time. Everything was one enormous ache, made that much worse when she moved. She groaned, stretching upward with painful slowness. Her muscles matched her protests with their own, and crumbling earth rolled off her pelt. For once, she really was as mud-splattered as she looked, and Ezino might have laughed at that if things weren't so dire. There was dust in places she didn't know it could go.

The sounds of pain ringing her 'round drowned out her own discomfort, though. It was almost more than she could bear - especially when one of them omama rolled into the fissure before her eyes. She was with cubs! Cubs, in this turmoil. Yowling out a reply, Ezino finished struggling to her feet and moved to curl protectively around the new mother. She would do anything Kokulzawa needed to help, and said as much in low, reassuring murmurs.

“I’m okay.” She managed to whisper to Ezinulo, she wasn’t okay, she knew that, blood was soaking her sides but she really couldn’t think about that. “Are they okay?” She whispered, her voice choked. Her two little cubs, the only two cubs she was left with. Tears fell down her face as she reached for her terrified little bundles and pulled them towards herself.

“It’s okay, we’re okay.” She whispered her voice cracking with the fear she felt, not for herself of course but for the two cubs she held tightly against her. “It’s only a little cut.” She coughed feeling dust raise around her. Her back was wet and she could feel the dampness of the ‘just a cut’ as blood stained her dark coat. The wound was deep but luckily the beast that had caught her hadn’t broken any of her bones. She was in pain and frightened but she was alive and while the cut was deep she would survive it once it stopped bleeding.

“Are you okay?” She managed at last trying to take her mind off the pain. “She smiled a weak, tired smile at Ezin. “Come and lay with us..” She looked upwards towards the gap in the fissure. How they were going to get out of here she was unsure, especially with all of the injuries a lot of the lionesses had sustained. The herd, she was fairly sure still thundered past overhead, they seemed to be safe for now.

—-

Taking a few long deep breaths the almost entirely white lion managed to at last catch his breath. He rolled to his belly and coughed. He had managed to absorb some water through his nose which caused him to sneeze nad couch at the same time. His usually pristine coat, already plastered by the endless torrent of rain was splattered with mud and debris.

Shaking his head he felt a dizziness pass over his eyes but he blinked this away as he crawled along the fissure in search of others who were already down here. He could see the other Inselele close by and several lionesses crushed together, scrambling for each other’s comfort. He wanted to ask if anyone needed his help, but he wasn’t sure what help he could give. He had strength and speed, usually assets, but here in the damp hole with a herd thundering over his head, he really wasn’t sure what he could do. All he could do was wait for the herd to leave and maybe he could help get everyone out of this hole.

Pahana breathed a slight sigh of relief, he hadn’t broken any bones and as he inspected his paws he realised the initaial fear he had lost a claw was untrue though he had certainly broken skin in many places and his rear end smarted, he would definitely be battered and bruised and when he had time to think about it and clean he was fairly certain he would be purple and black instead of white. It seemed to him though he had been one of the lucky ones. The smell of blood tainted the air.

As Liyana laid under a wriggling mass of bodies and body parts of other lions she prayed her face wasn't directly in the rear of someone else's, not only that but she hoped no one had any severe injuries because of this. She was feeling a little claustrophobic under the weight of so many bodies but she was in a spot were it was easy enough for her to shift and feel less squished. Doing so she felt the shaking continue and realized that no one was out of danger yet, at least not the one's above the crevice in which they had all fallen.

Avani, flying high above the mess looked onward in horror as a stampede raced towards the lions but there was nothing she could do to warn them or even avert the charging herd so she watched in horror as they plowed into the lions that hadn't fallen into the crack in the earth.

Chiko, from her spot was able to look up and then duck just in time as the large beasts stormed through where they had just been. The rain had made it extremely hard to see and she could hear the screams and shouts of some as they were struck and she hoped no one was killed during this.

Cerobi breathed a heavy sigh of relief- one even she couldn't hear through all the noise around them- when Giruvegan opened his eyes. The sense of calm she was seeking by looking to him didn't last long as he struggled to get up to his feet and try to exert some control over the situation. She would have preferred to tell him to stay down but she held her tongue and did her best to support him as he got his bearings again. In all the chaos, she simply seemed frozen in her place now. Everything was happening so fast and getting out of the ground safely at the distance they were at wasn't going to happen.

So she waited for the stampede to pass, tense.
