R'in and Bronze Demodeth
Even though the past week had been a success, Demodeth remained of the opinion that R'in should take it easy, and he had insisted that they stick to the beach today, scrounging for food that wasn't fish. The man's flits, Burl and Bark, flew overhead, but after about an hour's searching, Burl popped into view near R'in's shoulder, chittering with excitement.
There's a firelizard clutch nearby. It was only because R'in sounded so delighted at the prospect that the bronze allowed him to wander off, following the little brown flit farther down the beach. They arrived to a small cluster of candidates and riders trying to coax the hatchlings to eat, and when one of them looked up, R'in smiled.
"Any left?" He hadn't started this day looking for another companion, but he wouldn't turn one away either.
The little blue that hatched from the egg he chose practically bit off R'in's finger in his haste to eat, and as he held up another smallish spiderclaw for the flit, he decided he'd call this one Auger.
Quote: 91-100: You decide to take a chance not on the water, but by hunting and scavenging on the beach itself. It seems to be successful! +5 points.

additional roll
Quote: While hunting the beach, you you find a newly hatched baby firelizard! The hungry being demands tribute, and you have no choice but to give in! Thankfully, you have a few snacks stashed to ensure this little flit doesn't go hungry. Well, this is an unexpected surprise... Roll a D20 to see what color, and Quote Uta! (You can only win this once per character. If you roll it on a character who has already Impressed, they simply find shells from an already hatched clutch instead.) 1-9. Green 10-14. Blue 15-17. Brown 18-19. Bronze 20. Gold If you roll a gold but your character already has one, we will turn it into a bronze instead. You can not opt out of this flit. Just like some characters who never intended to Impress, this little flit is now yours. Surprise!

The Council had made its decision.
The sevendays they had spent utilizing their resources and taking advantage of the bounty of the sea around them had been beneficial. Though much of the Weyr--himself included--was quite over seafood, the sacrifice seemed to pay off.
The Candidates, for now at least, could remain at the Weyr.
The Weyr had made a great sacrifice--it almost was comical how terrible they were when it came to salvaging the bounty of the sea--but it would ensure the Weyr could make it through the winter with food in their stores. Unfortunately, he knew that the Weyr could not continue to deplete the ocean's resources. Already he heard of riders having to go further out to sea, or down the beaches, to find fish. They were having an effect on the waters, and local dolphineers and fishcrafters had already expressed concern.
The Weyr would have no choice but to cut back on how much fishing they were doing, and give the waters back to those of White Cliff. But the immediate threat had dissipated--for now. Some Candidates or riders might well get tasked to do a little fishing--but it was no longer as pressing a need. They had salted, smoked, and dried fish aplenty for their future use... Provided the Holds didn't hold back from their tithes anymore than they already had, R'mor, and the Council, felt tentatively more relaxed.
The next move was to try to regain trust and make amends with those of the Hold. They would need to be extra diligent during Threadfall, and try their damndest to improve their relations with the local Holds. They had a job to do. While they absolutely needed the Hold's support to be their very best, they also had to ensure that they were doing everything they could to keep their ties strong. They had failed to protect some of the lands from Thread--that was on the Weyr. They had failed to hold their tongue at both a High Reaches Hatching and at their very own, inadvertently harming ties--that was on them. Perhaps they had not done enough to reach out to the people of Pern--the people they were committed to protect, regardless of personal feelings or slights. They were Dragonriders of Pern. Obviously, they would not tolerate their service being taken advantage of... but it was clear something with the Holds had to give.
If the Weyr could but reach out an olive branch, and settle tempers--their lot might well improve.
The Candidates would remain--for now, at least through the winter months. If tithes didn't improve, and their relations with the Holds continued to deteriorate, they might well need to take a different approach.
He would have to talk to the Wingleaders, as well as Hestina, about their next move. If the Weyr thought Fishing difficult, he could only imagine how their diplomacy would go over, as it wasn't simply on the shoulders of the Council to improve. It would require the entire Weyr being on the same page--and knowing damn well how to act around persons of rank and position. Perhaps it was something Western Weyr had forgotten, but they would remember, soon enough.
For now though, the Weyr's position through winter was tentatively secure.

OOCly: Sorry for the delay on this guys! Despite having some terrible sevendays, and losing supplies (and fingers)--the Weyr actually came out well in the black with an overal lscore of +482.
Prism Shine had all the dice luck with a final score of +135. For such a heroic effort, and helping carry us, we bequeath this little lady:
We will be including this Fishing Grid in our Weekly Grid Rolls for anyone at Western Weyr who might have been assigned to gather some of the sea's bounty--but overall riders, Candidates, and Weyrlings can relax. They have some free time back.
Diplomacy is something R'mor will be talking to all his Wingleaders about, and the Weyr is going to be expected to go all-in in helping to restore good relations with their allies, dragonrider and holder alike. More to come on that front in our usual snail pace. :3
Thanks for participating!
