Number 1) Excel Saga It's a comedy at heart, but you'll find serious parts without having to look *too* hard. The characters are memorable, the idea is amusing, and frankly I've yet to see another series that even comes close to matching it.
Number 2) Ranma 1/2 For when mild comedy isn't enough and you have to have complete off-the-wall comedy, Ranma 1/2 fits the bill.
Number 3) Hellsing Vampires, a psycotic Scottish Caltholic priest, vampire Nazi's and a vampiric Nazi catboy. Ah, Hellsing...
Number 4) No Need For Tenchi/All New Tenchi Muyo It has Sasami. That's enough of an explanation all on it's own.
Number 5) Ghost in the Shell The anime is better, to my mind, but the manga is still good, and you can see where some of the plot ideas came from.
