I personally feel that it's not that geeks have social skills (one group are defined by the fact that they have none) but they have their own friends and word and socialize with each other whereas nerds try to function in normal society and refuse to interact with other nerds...
I've also broken the geek world down into 3 (well potentially 4 but the 4th group is VERY rare) through my observations at various conventions and selling video games. If you'd like an explanation pm me and I'll try to explain

OK OK that is completely backwards. A geek is a person who is cool yet does all of the societally unaccepted things. Like band. A nerd is Urkle. Geeks are the coolest people ever and have intelligent things to say and are also talented in different things and are not afraid to be rejected from society. A nerd just doesn't care and is just plain ugly...

my distinction between a nerd and a geek is that a nerd doesnt really have to be good with computers, geeks are nerds with computer knowledge. i am somewhere in the grey area between the two distinctions i guess.

My view of nerds and geeks can be summed up by that one Earthlink commercial (I've skipped over most of the thread, hopefully I'm not echoing anyone)
The commercial said something along the lines of "geeks get it done, and nerds don't".
Well, I consider myself a nerd. I was one those kids that only stayed afterschool for Anime Club, who wasted too much time on the internet, and spent many lunches at the corner-table arguing over stupid, nerdy things (Kirk vs. Picard, Nintendo vs. Sony, Porn vs. Hentai).
On the other hand, geeks were enrolled in honors calculus 7, played instruments, always built class projects nicely AND somehow turned them in by the original due date!
If two or more nerds met while doing homework at the library, they'd each leave without having completed anything. Geeks, though, would multiply their productivity when combined! Truly astounding creatures...
