How many ways could this possibly go wrong? You've managed to throw yourself completely off course, and honestly, any solution right now seems like a good one.

With more love and reassurance flowing from T'roi, Destrierth launched himself into the air again with a running start, flapping furiously to get airborne. Due to the distance he had to run, however, he found himself flying completely off course from where he had been instructed to fly. The young bronze was approaching the active part of the Weyrbowl and knew he was in danger of colliding with one of the adult dragons!

Is it your hatchday, because you are killing it. Possibly literally, when it comes to the plant life you just demolished on landing, but you know what? You stuck the landing.

Destrierth refused to ask for help from His, though that was exactly what he should have done. Instead he took matters into his own claws, like a bronze of old would have done! Banking sharply in the air to get himself off of his current trajectory, he saw the group of weyrlings off in the distance, and flapped as hard as he could toward them. Then when he approached, he backwinged hard, to the point he nearly stood still in the air, and delicately lowered himself onto the ground. He may have inadvertently crushed someone's herb patch, but otherwise he had landed perfectly!

T'roi whooped and ran over to the bronze, once more hugging him around the neck. "That was amazing! You flew so far! And that landing was totally perfect!"

The bronze dragonet held his head high. That was what I meant to do, he replied proudly. He was still exhausted -- even moreso than before -- but he was more than ready to go one more time!

Vardoth Take 2:

Quote:
It's difficult to get off of the ground to begin with. This requires a lot more muscle strength than you were prepared for, and by the time you're airborne, you are already pretty tired.

Quote:
You may be tired, but your are mighty! Take that, sky! You muster up a hidden reserve to remain in the air, but now the trouble is how you land.

1 - 5: You start off strong, but then a gust of wind throws you off your game. Roll a d4 to see whether you're able to correct your trajectory:

  1. You veer off of your intended path, angling for a small copse of trees. Try though you might, you can't maintain control and crash into the underbrush.
  2. You've been doing a lot of flaps to prepare for this, and you manage to overcome this temporary hurdle, but ouch, your muscles hurt.
  3. The wind blows you well off course, but you use your tail to turn around, heading back toward the group.
  4. Nothing seems to stop the wind, and you are now well on your way toward the lake. Splash!

Tuelarua’s beam felt like a dragonlength wide, pride at her beloved surging through her. ’I knew you could do it!’ And with a successful landing to boot! Oh, her wonderful Palouseth had looked radiant in the air, and no doubt that come free time, there would be another few sketches from this day be added.

The green in particular trotted out her landing, almost dancing with the pride that flooded their bond like a river. With your support, I can do anything, Tuela. For she did. If Tuela supported her, she felt as though she could take on the world!

...well, maybe not the whole world. There was a lot of world.
And not everyone in the world.

But semantics were not a thing to be debated about, not when there was a task in front of her and more attempts to be made. Mantling her wings at the threat of the challenge before her, Palouseth turned to take a running start, her wings pumping hard as she jumped...

Quote:
Psh, this flying thing is smooth sailing! You don't know what all the fuss is about. Except, now that you're here it occurs to you that you don't know how to land.

Remembering to tuck her legs in earlier, wide wings caught the current and up her slight form rose into the air. She trills, peering down at the form of her rider down on the ground. This is amazing. Oh, High Reaches looks amazing from up here.. Flying felt so natural, so second nature. Did she really need lessons on how to do this?

’I hate to remind you, darling. You look amazing up there. But we need to show that you can land.’

Quote:
Who's laughing now? You've got this thing. Yeah, take that! And that! And... whoops, didn't stick the landing.

...oh, if she must. Certainly the landing would be just as smooth as the take-off. With a heavier push of her wings, Palouseth curled around to lower her descent. The ground came closer as she extended her legs. There we go, ease back into a stride on her paws, and --

Palouseth’s backend suddenly was arcing over the rest of her, her back slamming into the ground as she skittered to a halt. ...oww.. She winced, rolling slightly as she tried to find her paws beneath her.

’Are you okay?!’ The panic in Tuela’s tone has Palouseth finally rising up, shaking herself out. There was no way for her rider to sprint to her side, much as the little green could feel she wanted to. Not with dragons taking off and landing.

I’m fine! She has to shake out her leg before she can put weight on her paw, but otherwise was nothing if not minorly sore.

With a final pat on the shoulder and feelings of love and encouragement from T'roi, Destrierth once more galumphed into the air. It was easier this time somehow; maybe after the first two times he'd launched himself skyward he'd gotten the hang of it. He flapped and soared and cruised around the field where the other weyrlings waited their turns as if he'd done it all his short life. The young bronze honked with pride. This was what he was born to do!

...Except he managed to forget that he had to land. Now, he'd done pretty well the last couple of times, but combining perfect flying with a perfect landing, well...

Nobody said this was going to be easy, but somehow you didn't realize it would be this hard either. Try though you might, you can't quite pull of the smooth landing you've seen all the adults do. But at least you managed to land.

Soaring down toward the ground below, Destrierth ran through his mind what he had to do. Backwing, descend to the ground, stick out your feet, stick the landing. That didn't seem that hard, he'd done pretty well before, right? And he felt it was his responsibility to show the others how it was done -- not out of any sense of showing off, but as a demonstration of how the dragons of old flew. He started backwinging, flapping his wings to slow his descent, but he was so exhausted he couldn't slow himself down sufficiently. Sticking his feet out, he braced for a rough landing.

Feet touched ground and skidded on the grass. Still too fast! Destrierth dug his heels in and toppled forward, careening to a stop just in front of T'roi. At least it was a landing....

The bronze creeled and flailed to his feet as T'roi ran up. "You did so well, my love," he crooned as he hugged Destrierth's neck, barely avoiding the dragonet's wings. "I'm so proud of you. You flew!" T'roi laughed and cried at the same time. "You did it, you flew!"

Of course I did, Mine. I'm a bronze of High Reaches! came the bugled reply.

[TAKE THREE]

We'll see about having someone come back with us to mend it properly later, D'rok suggested. Somehow, suggesting simply replacing it without letting it fight didn't feel right.

A few of Khazariath's siblings took their second attempts while D'rok did another check over of his dragon, turning his feet over one by one to check his claws again, as well as searching for any splinters from the less-than-ideal landing. Once D'rok was satisfied, the pair lined up to wait for another go of it.

The first takeoff should have been enough to have prepared Khazariath - and it had for the second. But the third reminded the young bronze once again that catching the air was not an easy task.

Quote:
Nope, this was a bad idea, and you skid gracelessly along the ground into a heap. Shards.

Despite the second attempt being so good, Khazariath would relive his first attempt with D'rok chasing after him to check up on him. Khazariath tucked his face into the young man, allowing D'rok to feel his utter shame. D'rok leaned physically into him. We'll work on strengthening those wing muscles more, he promised, Khazariath's shame being his - though D'rok himself was nothing but proud of his dragon for having a fairly good first round of it all.

They'd figure it out.

Once he was safely back on the ground - not that the landing had been all that pretty, but no trees had been harmed and his pride was still intact, so he was taking it as a win - Maestoth allowed His to check him over thoroughly (and do a bit of fussing, of course). He then prepared to do it again, and even better this time! He had learned from his first attempt, and was certain that he would only be going up from here...metaphorically, of course. He didn't need to go quite so high up as he had earlier.

His take-off was much better this time, but while he didn't go too high, he waa very much blown in the wrong direction. Well. This wouldn't do, either! With some effort, he maneuvered himself back in the proper direction, but the landing he came in for was, once again, not a pretty one.

Still, he was in his opinion doing better than most, overall, and so he held his head high and carried himself with every last ounce of his pride.

After yet more encouragement and praise from I'zrin as the young man checked him over, ensuring that his latest landing hadn't done him any harm, Maestoth was soon itching to go again. Each try was only getting better, and he was sure that the third time would be the charm! He was determined to do this perfectly, and make it obvious who was the best dragon here.

The young brown flexed and stretched, taking his time to make sure that he was as ready aa he could possibly be. His takeoff was better still on his third attempt, and this time, there were no mishaps in the air - no ill-timed thermals, no wandering off-course, only smooth and flawless flying. He was smug as could be, loving every moment, but all too soon, it was time to land.

This remained the trickiest part, and suffice to say it wasn't graceful, but as he didn't end up in the lake or a tree, and he remained uninjured, he was really quite pleased with himself
