☆ ☆【 Dear Arceus, these waves of Dragon-type Pokemon just kept coming and coming! Chrysa made a mental reminder to get rid of this Odd Incense by the time this was all well and finished, this thing was certainly a lot more trouble than it was worth. Still, she could see quite a bit of interesting species as she scanned them all into her Pokedex, if she didn’t have a Dragon-type of her own on her team right now in the form of Piper, perhaps she would have considered catching one herself. But for now, training was the most important thing to take care of, at least so that they would be able to stand a chance against Grant when it finally came time to face him. Regina and Amaterasu had the crowd control situation well taken care of, while Ryouichi was simply cleaning up shop with the horde. The way they were working together so efficiently was quite astounding to see, and not so much as even a complaint from anyone thus far. Even though Ammy’s Gunk Shots had passed just a bit too close for comfort to Ryou on at least a few occasions... At least friendly fire wasn’t something that they had to worry about right now. Chrysa hoped that there would be a lull in the waves soon enough though, she was sure that her team could use a breather once they were through with this. ” Keep it up, guys, you’re doing awesome teamwork there!” she called out, doing her best to spur them on. On the upside, it looked like the large horde they had been faced with before was starting to thin out a little from the looks of it.
” Just to go off on a bit of a limb here, be more careful when you pick up those Odd Incenses next time, Ammy darling,” warned Regina in a light but chiding tone, ” Things like those can be dangerous to mess around with, especially if you don’t know what you’re in for.” At least with the Dragon-types herded together as they were, taking care of them would prove to be more manageable with Ryouichi knocking them down and out every few seconds. And from the looks of it, the numbers were starting to dwindle a little, a sign that they were finally putting a significant dent in their opponent’s forces. At this point, their routine was pretty much clockwork, though Regina kept close eye out for any that might try to be sneaky. ” Sorry, Senpai!” Amaterasu apologized quickly as she bowed her head, maintaining a steady stream of goo to keep their foes right where they wanted them. Regina kept careful watch on the corralled Dragon-types, occasionally swiping at them with her long ears if they attempted to try to get around them. Ryouichi felled another Dragon-type quickly and easily with another Icy Wind, the Bagon practically falling to the ground unconscious the moment the attack touched it. The Froakie gave a bit of a snort, turning to face the remnants of the legion as Amaterasu and Regina began funneling them in. A part of him wanted a bit more of a challenge, as the Dragon-types fell to his attacks far too easily that they didn’t ever get the opportunity to strike back at him. At the same time, however, he could feel himself growing stronger and stronger with each opponent he felled, and he was compelled to keep pushing onwards and forwards. Maybe then he would be able to evolve, be able to grow to be more like the ninja he had always made himself out to be. 】☆ ☆

☆ ☆【 It looked like they were just about nearing the final stretch, the horde’s numbers were falling with each foe Ryouichi took down. They just needed to pull it one more mile if they were going to get through this… ” Alright, gang, we’re making good progress! Just keep right on it!” Chrysa declared, hoping that they would be nearing the end of it soon. Hell, she wasn’t even sure if she would want to see another Dragon-type again once this was all over. At least they could have a chance to finally rest once this was finished, she was sure that they would need it after everything they’d been doing. However, she would soon come to realize just how far from over their troubles were… All of the sudden, she heard a noise from close by, what sounded like… huge, heavy, lumbering footsteps, as if something huge was headed their way… and fast. Regina heard it too, the Mega Lopunny quickly starting to back up towards Chrysa as she noticed the smaller Dragon-types seemed to be scattering hither and thither as quickly as possible. ” I suggest you both back up… now,” she warned in a low tone of voice towards Amaterasu and Ryou, her ruby red eyes narrowing in the direction the stomping was coming from. The Fennekin quickly followed suit, looking a bit scared now as she stood next to Regina, prepared to hide behind the Lopunny at any moment. Ryouichi huffed softly, but stood back a bit, prepared for whatever was to come out of the brush. The footsteps seemed to slow down, their pacing more laborious and careful, and then stopped altogether.
For several moments, everyone stood deathly silent, Chrysa, her Pokemon… It was as if they were scared to even breathe out of fear that whatever it was that was undoubtedly hiding would find them. Suddenly, a flash of red appeared for a brief moment or two from a nearby tree, disappearing seconds later. Another minute went by, and then slowly, very slowly, a thick, red head peered out from behind the tree, slitted, draconic pupils gazing out timidly at them. The redhead blinked slightly as she tried to get a better look at what the Pokemon was, a… Druddigon? It seemed the most likely, considering its distinctive spiky head shape and that it was also a Dragon-type Pokemon. The Druddigon’s eyes slid down towards the purple incense nestled in Chrysa’s lap, carefully stepping out more into the open and further confirming Chrysa’s suspicions. Thick, blue-scaled hide, long, gangly arms with red spikes jutting out of them, the large fanned out structures on its back made to look like wings… The Druddigon’s eyes were fixated primarily on the incense, however, as it stepped closer towards the red-headed girl in the wheelchair who seemed to be the owner of the object that gave off such a compelling scent. Chrysa could only stare in awe and fear as the beast drew nearer, feeling dwarfed by the large dragon even though it was likely only a foot or so taller than her at most. As imposing as it seemed, though, somehow she felt that it was actually quite harmless, it only seemed to be interested in her incense from the looks of it. Ryouichi narrowed his eyes however, sensing his trainer’s distress, and acted quickly as he leapt forth towards the Druddigon and sprayed it with a blast of frigid wind to knock it down and out quickly. The dragon barely had time to react, the beast holding up its arms in an attempt to shield itself just as the icy attack struck. Groaning softly, the Druddigon slumped forward, frost clinging to its thick hide in the aftermath of the attack. Chrysa could’ve sworn that the beast looked at her with an odd sort of expression in its eyes, as if it was… pleading with her, just before it fell unconscious.
” Poor thing… it looked like it only wanted the incense, for whatever reason,” the redhead said as she gazed at the collapsed form of the dragon, ” You didn’t have to be so harsh with it, Ryou, I don’t feel like it had intended any harm towards me…” Come to think of it, the Druddigon hadn’t even acted aggressively towards them at all. She supposed that she couldn’t blame Ryou that much, he had only been doing what he had to in order to protect her. The Froakie frowned slightly, though it all honesty he did feel a bit bad for striking down the creature so quickly and mercilessly even when it had been clear that the dragon hadn’t been aggressive at all to them. Chrysa reached into her bag and pulled out a Pokeball, giving a small, soft smile as she tossed it at the fainted Druddigon. The beast disappeared within, being captured without any resistance. ” It’ll be alright now, okay?” the redhead spoke softly as she picked up the Pokeball, as if trying to comfort the dragon that it now held inside. Tucking the ball away, Chrysa glanced around them, noticing how it seemed oddly empty now after the absolute onslaught of Pokemon that had been coming at them nonstop. It looked like the rest of the remaining smaller dragons they had fought earlier had run off when the Druddigon had arrived. ” Well, looks like that’s the end of that, for now I think,” she remarked, glancing towards her own Pokemon, ” In any case, we should continue on to Camphrier from here. We’ll train more along the way if possible, alright?” She wasn’t sure if Roxas had made it to the town or not, and hopefully Bastien wouldn’t be following too far behind. For now, though, it was best that they try to get back on the road again, though somehow Chrysa felt that they hadn’t seen the last of those Dragon-types just yet. Still, she supposed it wouldn’t hurt to hold onto it for a bit longer, as long as they didn’t have to deal with a whole horde like just minutes ago at least. 】☆ ☆

"Uwaaaaaaaaagh!!" Running as fast as his legs would carry him, Bastien did his best to escape the wrath of that bird-horde behind him. They were just too fast, though! He couldn't hide and he couldn't shake them. "Into the woods!" Bassey and Cotton passed several skaters, attracting quite of a lot of attention to themselves before running into the deeper parts of Route 5. Now that they had some sort of cover above them, they might be able to focus on taking them out one by one. Bastien turned with Cotton, keeping an eye out... And it was just as he thought. "Ha! They can't attack through trees!" Watching as another Taillow swooped down, Cotton prepared himself and dealt with the bird with a couple of strong tackles. "Alright, good stuff. Keep it up, Cotton--" Just as he said that, Bastien looked up and took notice of the sheer amount of birds flying above those trees. This was going to be a long day. "But, I'm not giving up this incense! I've gotta become more manly!"

"Ach, watch out-!" Scooping up Cotton, Bastien managed to narrowly avoid being cut up by the wings of something much larger than the rest of those birds. Having chopped up an opening through the trees that were shielding them, a new threat raised its head and glared at the two. It even seemed to be smirking... "EHHHH!?" It was a Skarmory! Oh, this was bad. This was very bad... Now that a hole had opened, more birds were swooping down and landing underneath the trees. "D-dammit! Cotton, use Thunder Shock!" While the Skarmory was busy trying to look menacing, Cotton took advantage of the opportunity and let out a huge pulse of electricity, zapping Skarmory and all the birds flocking around it. It had an obvious effect; the birds were certainly spooked now! Skarmory, looking a little miffed, flapped its wings and advanced to try and attack Cotton... But to no avail. The Flaaffy ducked underneath, sending out another shock aimed at Skarmory's belly. The steel-winged beast cringed and drew back, landing clumsily... That definitely hurt it. Not about to pass up on the opportunity, Bastien tossed out a Pokeball to try and catch the Skarmory. It sucked in the massive creature, and... Click! That was one more Pokemon under his belt. But the battle was far from over, as more and more birds were arriving.

He knew the incense was attracting them, but it hadn't occurred to him that the man had been a con-artist...

Cotton didn't seem too intimidated. This was definitely a side of the Flaaffy that Bastien hadn't seen before... Perhaps he and the others were all being held back when they worked at the flower shop. In any case, Bastien wasn't scared of a few birds, and neither was Cotton! "Alright! Aim for the Taillows first! Get rid of the smaller threats to isolate the big ones! Go!" Cotton nodded firmly, dashing straight ahead to combat one of the Taillows that eyed him cautiously. A good pummeling later, and another one was down. That just left... About a hundred or so more... Oh geez, this was gonna be a tough fight. Noticing that Cotton had knocked something off of the Skarmory from earlier, Bastien dashed over and retrieved it. "Oy, Cotton! Heads up, buddy!" This would help them a bit; another Heartscale! Turning to catch the shiny scale, Cotton grabbed it and eyed it curiously. Whatever it was, it felt nice...

"Alright! Keep going!" Surprisingly, the Taillows were still holding fast, even after seeing what Cotton could do. It was time to change that. Cotton prepared himself, turning towards a small group of the tiny swallows before dashing at them. It elicited a 'EEP!' from them as they scrambled to try and fly out of the way, leaving only one particularly clumsy fellow. That one would be Cotton's target; the Flaaffy hopped up, flipping once before smashing down on it with his deceptively-strong tail. It smacked the Taillow down hard, making it bounce backwards to land amongst the rest of the bird horde. "Ha! How's that? You'd better just give up now, cuz this is our incense. No way am I gonna hand it over to a bunch of bird-brained thieves like you!"

That probably wasn't a smart thing to say... It seemed to have the opposite effect that Bastien had wanted, making the birds look even angrier than they were before.

Stepping back a bit, the green-haired trainer gulped.

Wait, what? Bastien looked around curiously, searching for the source of a mysterious new voice. A few seconds later, he found it; a Xatu. So that must've been the leader. "Why the heck do you want it so bad, anyway? I need it to become more manly!" Bastien instinctively shielded the pot of incense from their view. "Cotton, keep attacking!"

"Raaaaaawk! You've been swindled, little one! That incense has nothing to do with making one more manly! It only serves to attract and aggravate the senses of Pokemon! Now hand it over so that we may destroy it--"

"No way, not a chance! You're just trying to trick me!" Bastien was adamant in his foolishness. "I'm not just some stupid kid that you can pull a fast one on. This incense is staying with me, and that's final! Nyehhh!" He stuck out his tongue at the Xatu, snickering as he noticed how flustered it made the green bird get.

"Rrrrgh... You fail to understand reason, skwaaawk! Attack, everyone! Pry that destructive device away from him!"

It was evident that Cotton was getting a little tired from all of his heavy lifting. "It's okay, Cotton. You did good! Take a break!" Bastien quickly withdrew his Flaaffy in favor of sending out Spice. "Your turn, Spice! We've got a bit of a dilemma! J-just don't breathe in, and you'll be fine!"

"Whaaat? Whattaya mean don't breathe i-- ooh, something smells like cinnamon rolls! Oh wait, yuck... And bird poop. Okay, yeah, I won't breathe in." Spice held her breath, turning towards all the birds in front of them.

"Use knock off! We gotta take down those Taillows before we can focus on anything else!" Bastien pointed to the group of birds, watching as his Marill bounced into the air and landed hard on one of the Taillows. Slowly but surely, they were driving them all away. Just a little more pushing! It was strange though, the way the birds all seemed to be waiting for something... Were they gathering energy perhaps?

The little mouse, who was still holding her breath, nodded and bounced on top of another Taillow, knocking it away like a bowling pin. They couldn't let Xatu pull off whatever he was trying to pull off!

One by one, the Taillow were falling. It was clear that Spice was getting a little sick of holding her breath, though... The Marill, once blue, was now a bright red as she flailed her arms around and squinted her eyes. "One more knock off, Spice! I'm sorry!" Spice hurriedly hopped up and smacked down another of the birds before finally gasping for air. She looked seriously confused...

"Bwehhh! Okay, I understand that it smells like cinnamon buns and bird poop, but I'll be darned if I'm gonna hold my breath any longer! This is ridiculous!"

"I will let you in on a secret, fat blue mouse. That incense is not dangerous to you, although he believes it is. Your trainer is not very smart, skrwawwwk!"

"Huh? Oh, Bassey? Yeeeeah, he's a little rough around the edges in most regards. So you're sayin' I can breathe this stuff in just fine, right? I mean, granted, you guys kinda stink, but the cinnamon buns kinda balance it out."

"...I-I guess so? Can you just tell him to give us that incense, skrawk?"

"Pffft! I can't talk to him, dumdum. If he didn't listen to you, he certainly won't listen to me. Heck, he can't even attempt to listen to me!"

Watching as Spice and the Xatu spoke back and forth, Bastien raised an eyebrow. This was all very strange... But luckily, Spice didn't seem to be affected by his incense. Maybe it only worked on humans in that regard? Although, come to think of it, Bastien still wasn't feeling any manlier. "This stuff must have a delayed start on it, or something. Oh, I wonder if I'll get bushier eyebrows?"

"I am, actually," Spice chimed in.

"...Please don't translate whatever it is she just said," Bastien muttered, scratching his cheek. "Let's just negotiate this peacefully! What if I give you something else in place of the incense?"

"That's not how it works, skwaaawk! We can all smell that stuff from miles away! You are disturbing the peace, and we won't stand for that! Now put it out and destroy it immediately!"

"No. Heck no! Not until I've got bigger muscles and a deeper voice!"

"How can one human possibly be this dense, raaawk!?"

It seemed that the Xatu was reaching his limit... Oddly, though, something happened then. The Taillows changed position, backing up behind their leader. Xatu began to laugh a little maniacally, glaring at Bastien. "What's so funny?"

"Ohhh, you're done for now. Skwaaaawk! We've finally focused our energy enough! I'm going to unleash my killer move, and there's nothing you can do about it!"

"Huh? Killer move? You can't kill people in this universe! Our ratings will get all messed up and kids won't be able to buy the game anymore!"

"...What are you talking about? N-nevermind! It doesn't matter! I've got enough energy to toast both of you!" Xatu closed his eyes and began to chant something strange as Bastien and Spice both watched... And then, before they knew it, their surroundings grew dark and Xatu grew in size. "Take this! Night Shaaaaade! SkwaaaaaAAWWK!"
