81-90: The line snaps and slices your hand right open. Ouch! Not only did you lose the haul, but you now have to visit the healers and get the wound dressed. Roll a D4 to see how severe your damage is! -5 points

The wound wasn't terrible, but it becomes infected! This will prevent you from fishing for a sevenday [skip the next week's rolls].

OW!! OW OW OW!! For as calm and laid back as Amna usually was, she was...honestly a bit of a wuss when it came to pain. She'd held it back until she'd gotten to the healers and seen her hand looked to, but the next day, waking up to find it throbbing and swollen... the woman was in tears as she got it checked and cleaned again. Eventually she'd find the humor in now having a scar across both hands... but not just yet. Right now, she just wanted to curl up and sleep the next week away.

Orange means week was skipped as result of past roll.

Quote:
1-10. You don't know exactly what happened, but somehow you have wound up tangled up in a fishing net, out in the middle of the ocean. You thrash around and try hard to free yourself, but all you wind up doing is breathing in the salt-water. Thankfully, you're fished out by your fellows, untangled from the net, and dragged back to shore. Outside of being a little traumatized, roll a D4 to see what the results of your poor fishing happened to be!

You fall ill. Perhaps it was drinking too much saltwater; perhaps it was getting wrapped up in netting and wire, but you find yourself coming down with the sniffles, and then it turns into a full-blown cold. You wind up needing to be a few days in the infirmary, and aren't going to be able to participate for the next next sevenday. [-20 points, and character loses the next sevenday's roll (so skip a week)]

If you are a rider with XP points, take your two highest stats. Change that number to negative. You now take that many extra negative points. (8+8=16)

They saying was that pride went before the fall... and fall Wione did. Right into the sea, tangled in a net. One minute laughing and half-sporting carelessly, the next... drowning. It left her shaking once she was hauled back to shore, but not as hard as she was shaking a few days later, bundled up and feverish with the healers, and Findith crooning and whining through their bond with worry.

61-70: You're fishing with a pole today, standing on the small floating dock. You see the bobber go under, and pull up hard. Sure enough, there's a whopper at the end of the line. It's a fight, and you can tell you've snagged the largest packtail you've ever seen. Unfortunately you yank too hard and the line snaps. Not only is your pole now useless, but the big one gets away. Worse, your fishing luck the rest of the sevenday seems to follow suit... You wind up with a whole lot of nothin'. -10 points

Ah... drat. The line snapped, for the third time that week, leaving X staring dully at the pole in their hands. A soft croon brought them out of their mental wanderings though... a mingled flinch of pain and spark of barely-there joy as the little green firelizard from the week prior piped up from their shoulder, tilting her head this way and that at the snapped line. Well. At least the firelizards didn't judge them...!

Well, shoot. It seemed to be a generally unlucky week, as far as Raen had heard, and her luck seemed no better. Another snapped line, another lost fish... there were going to be hungry bellies tonight, it seemed.

As you begin to reel in the net or line, you are overpowered by a strong wave, and your catch is set free. Shardit! That had been a good haul, too! Nonriders or riders without XP points, take -5 points. If you are a rider, your dragon is able to support you, and you manage to bring in a full net of packtails. Riders with XP points add 5 points to their total.

If B'jor had happened to be alone, the great wave would have over taken his net he was certain was brimming with a good catch. No matter his rippling strength, the waves were far too strong to fight like undertow. Mesikath, eyes whirling with determination, took to the water. The net carefully brought to the dock in his claws.

Shalbyath was patient as her rider netted spiderclaws. The gold watching in delight as Noma scolded ones for pinching too much, or threatening them just how they'll be cooked. A good haul meant her rider would sleep easier that night, not worrying about what would fill her children's bellies.

Yellowstripe and Whitefish over here! Those'll sure be tasty with some citrus, over rice, or in a lovely stew.

If it wasn't raining, D'emi might have fished better... he bit his lip as he hauled the net in. The haul was modest, but he still wish it was more. If he did more maybe the Weyr would worry just a bit less.

Aquiel and Blue Kepalath

Quote:
Well that didn't go as planned. You thought you were pulling in a whopper, but instead all it turns out to be is an ancient, slimey, and very unsalvageable boot tangled up with some driftwood. There's nothing edible about this--not even any shelled seagrubs. To top it off, any fishing you do the rest of the day will either result in no bites or catches. -15 points

Aquiel struggled with the line for what felt like ages. His blue Kepalath encouraging his rider as they watched the burly man try to move mountains to reel it in. Aquiel didn't have to haul it in to know what bobbed at the end of his hook as soon as it broke the surface. With solemn sigh he unhooked his line and let the driftwood float back to its resting place.

K'ent's dainty green had his back. She drove as soon as she saw her rider have difficulty with his catch. She couldn't let him struggle... how uncouth! She plucked the net ashore with her two toned forelegs, looking rather pleased with herself waiting to be praised.

Do fingertails taste good? Neuwith asked as she watched Taibbi emptying her fish baskets into other, more tightly-woven baskets.

Taibbi shrugged. They taste like fish. Might be because the kitchen doesn't know what they're doing with them, might be because they don't have much flavor to start with. Might be something else. I don't know.

She didn't mean to sound surly, but she had grown a bit tired of seafood. Since it couldn't easily be stored, it seemed it had supplanted the regular land-grown foods she'd grown up eating, and her stomach was unsettled most of the time. Not to mention the new and unpleasant nature of her stool.

I bet I would like them, Neuwith declared, prompting a gurgle from Taibbi's intestines.

Doubtless, Taibbi agreed. I'd trade with you if I could, but the amount of fingertails it would take to keep you fed would be astronomical.

I suppose I'll stick to herdbeasts then.

That's probably for the best, Taibbi agreed again. She had realized that she didn't even smell the fish anymore, she'd grown so used to handling them. It seemed unfair that she could have become immune to the smell, but still got stomach grumbles from eating them.

Csinda and Tijuth
Quote:
31-40: Surely you have a knack for this, for the water is teaming with sea life. Roll a D4 to find out how plentiful your catch is!

Csinda had decided, based on how good she and Tijuth seemed to be at fishing, that she would give some more consideration to what retirement might look like for them, and whether the idea of acting as ship guards during Threadfall was really actionable. Frustratingly, it meant having to figure out what sort of maneuvers were best-suited to a solo dragon fighting Thread, which didn't seem to be an area the Weyr had done a lot of experimenting with, for obvious reasons. There was also the firestone problem.

It continued to tug at her thoughts as she cast a line from Tijuth's back. It was a challenge to get a good cast while sitting on dragonback - there were lots of things to get in the way of the rod and the hook, like the dragon's wings - but Csinda had a knack for it and she liked sitting out on the water, using Tijuth as a sort of raft. For her part, Tijuth didn't mind as long as that hook never caught her wing.

The fish were really biting, so the pair couldn't devote as much thought to planning as Csinda would have liked. At least, Csinda couldn't. Tijuth was just acting as a boat, and could think a great deal on the topic, and the fact was that she did not like the idea of being solely responsible for protecting a ship during Fall. There were too many opportunities for things to go very wrong and for her to disappoint everyone. She knew that at some point in the near future, she would have to let Csinda know that she would not go along with a plan to hire out as solo protectors of fishers, but for now she let it go. Csinda often got ideas in her head that were chased away by other ideas in a few sevendays. Tijuth could probably wait this one out.

Totals
R'bin & Huarangith: -10 +15 +10
Taibbi & Neuwith: -5 +15 +5
Csinda & Tijuth: +20 +5 +5
Z'men & Brilath: +15 -10 (out for the rest of the game)

Overall: +65
