Bell and Mercury were within sight when Al stumbled upon a heart-shaped item, and although he wasn't personally familiar with it he knew of its intended purpose. He scooped it up, no doubt some careless trainer had dropped this without realizing, and contemplated using it on himself before deciding that it'd be better to use it on of the other two, whatever Dom decided to have them do, it'd be made easier if one of his pokemon had a powerful move.
"Oi," Al called out to the two, grabbing their attention and pulling them from out of whatever discussion they were having. As he drew closer his gaze drifted between the two as he decided on who to give it to, eventually going with the pokemn who had already shown an interest in battle. "Here, Bell." The Aipom tossed the Heart Scale over to the Chespin, who fumbled twice but ultimately caught it before giving the item, and its send, a curious look. "Crush it," he instructed, but didn't wait to see if she'd follow directions before he turned to Mercury. "While she's figuring out what new move she has, I want you to find a pokemon."
Al swiveled his head around the immediate area, and after a bit of searching he spotted a Caterpie angrily wiggling towards a fallen tree branch, its leaves fresh and apparently its target. "There. You've even got a type advantage, so it should be easy." Mercury padded forward, joining Al in his observation of the little caterpillar. "Are you sure? It looks stronger than me..." Al dismissed the other's concern with a wave of his hand, "charge at it., that'll take it by surprise."
Mercury's ears fell back, uncertain, but after a few seconds, which he apparently used to calm his own worries, he gathered up the courage to charge at the Caterpie. It squeaked, once it saw the fox running straight for it, and shot out a sticky substance that splattered across his face. Instead of panicking, Mercury simply spat out an ember of fire, burning the Caterpie and causing it to flee.

Once the Caterpie was gone Mercury felt safe enough to flop onto his haunches, his back leg lifting up to help scratch the substance from off his body. From behind him he heard the sound of footsteps drawing closer. "Congratulations," he heard Al say, though he spoke in monotone, which took away from praise. "It attacked me," Mercury commented and flicked his ears, successfully dislodging a bit more of the web. "But you didn't receive any damage, which is what we were aiming for," Al quipped and then gestured for him to investigate behind a fallen log. "I saw movement," Al reported. "There's a good chance there's another pokemon back there."
Mercury simply nodded, this time deciding to keep all worries to himself, and quietly made his way over to the log, and indeed there was a pokemon behind it. The muscles in his back-legs tensed up before he propelled himself up, claws sinking into the soft wood to help him make those final few inches up the top. He panted from the exertion, chest heaving, and waited just long enough to make visual confirmation on the little yellow pokemon before he spat out another ember of flames, successfully knocking it out with one hit.

Well, that was certainly an ego booster! Mercury hopped down from off the log, his tail now whipping back and forth through the air. Two battles in and he was already feeling stronger! Of course, he wasn't as naïve to think that he could take on any pokemon, he knew for a fact that Al was still stronger than him, but... at the very least he would be able to take on the forest's pokemon without too much of an issue.
He was in the process of returning so that he could report back to Al when he, literally, stumbled upon his next battle. The Fennekin failed to notice the outcropping rock in his path, at least not until he had tripped and tumbled over it, his acrobatics sending him through a pair of bushes and into the Metapod behind them. Mercury quickly shot up, shaking his head in order to regain his senses, but yipped when he found himself staring into the angry red eyes of the cocoon. Before the bug-type could exact its revenge he quickly dispatched it, the fire still smoldering when he ran back out to finally join Al and Bell.

Mercury walked up to Al and Bell just in time to see the latter show off her new move, a swift uppercut into the open air surrounded by crackling electricity. He found the fur on the back of neck raising from the electricity in the air, in fact his entire body was threatening to frizz out when the move finally died out and Bell noticed his presence. "There you are, Merc!" She ran over to him eagerly, grin wide. "How'd the training go?"
He tipped his head to the side, for the moment more concerned about the name he'd just been called rather than answering Bell's question. "...Merc?" That was an... odd thing to call someone. was it a nickname? "It's your nickname!" Bell confirmed, excited. Oh, so he had been right. "Erm..." Mercury sat down and just barely stifled a yawn, suddenly tired. "It went well, I didn't take any damage." This last part he added for Al, his eyes shifting slyly towards the Aipom. He still didn't look impressed, but he at least acknowledged the information with a nod of his head before he turned to Bell.

After some discussion the trio decided to move to a different area, still within the vicinity of their trainer, but Al had pointed out that after three battles in the same area the pokemon would be wary, and less inclined to make an appearance. Dom, in the meantime, was busy making a phone call. He'd settled for laying out, legs spread before him with his back propped by the base of a tree. Before getting comfortable he had pulled out his baseball, and now in his left hand tossed the stitched ball up and down with a roll of the wrist and a lazy underhand, subtly suppressing the urge to actually play, but he didn't have his pitcher with him and he needed to stay focused.
The phone rang only once before the line was picked up and an excited, feminine voice spoke into the phone. "Finally! I thought you'd never call," there was audible sigh on the other line and Dom rolled his eyes, she was always so dramatic. "I told you I would, didn't I?" was his only response, his eyes flitting up to follow the movements of his ball. "Yeah, you did. But, I got worried. Where are you now?" Although it wasn't necessary, he found himself looking about anyway, it wasn't as if he needed to try and find some definitive landmark, he knew where he was. "A forest," he finally replied, shifting himself on the ground. "Where are you?"
There was a pause, one so long that Dom actually had to check to see if they had been disconnected. Nope, the call was ongoing. "Robyn?" From over the line he heard a sigh, this one different from the last, it was pensive. "Well you see, sweetums I--""Don't call me that," he interjected almost immediately, eyebrows scrunched at the mere name. "Love?" Now that was just worse. "No.""Babycakes?""Hell no.""Sugar?""......""Sugar cookie?""...I don't even know how to respond to that one." After several minutes of her rebounding pet names off him, Dom finally decided to put an end to it. "I'm going to hang up," he informed her, voice tense. "Aw, sweetie don't be like--"
And with a firm click Dom hung up, cutting off whatever it was Robyn had been saying. He'd call back in a few minutes.

While Dom waited to call Robyn back he turned his attention to the egg in his lap, the hand that had been holding his phone moving to quickly swipe the egg's smooth surface. Just like Sheik, he had 'claimed' the unhatched pokemon from Team Aqua, however it had actually just been found rather than stolen-- who would've thought. Without any identifying features, or any sort of hint found it'd eventually been taken in on the premises that it was a legendary, or at the very least a rare pokemon.
Unlike most of the other items he'd grabbed, he'd planned to take the egg from the beginning; it hadn't just been an 'opportunity swipe', he'd actually prepared for it. Now, he wasn't much of a breeder, there was no way in hell he could be compared to a 'parent', but the allure of an unknown pokemon had been too strong. So, he would try his hand at hatching an egg and then afterwards he'd raise the pokemon as his own, and that's what he was looking forward to the most. Unlike catching, or even claiming, raising a pokemon from an egg meant having a direct impact on its personality, its quirks, and its own moral code, which he had no experience in.
Which meant a challenge, and there was nothing he loved more than that.

Ten minutes passed before Dom finally picked his communicator and redialed Robyn's number, his eyes shutting as the ringing of the phone echoed out. The phone rang twice before the line was picked up and Dom stifled a yawn before he spoke into the speaker, "so, are you going to tell me where you are now, or are we just going to start that nickname game again?" From the other line he could practically hear Robyn roll her eyes before she laughed, "you're a very rude person, you know that?" she remarked rhetorically and waiting a moment before she sighed. "I don't know where I am," she finally admitted, causing Dom to quirk an eyebrow.
A strained laughed escaped him afterwards, before it evolved into a full on guffaw. "What happened to that 'superior sense of direction' you were bragging about, eh?" he mocked, and through another onset of merriment heard Robyn sigh dramatically. "Look-- just shut up, alright? You said you're in a forest, right? I think I know where you're talking about. Just keep moving and I'll meet you in a day or two in the city to the North." Dom cleared his throat and regained his composure, at least enough so that he could process the information given to him.
"Alright. I'll stick around for a day or two, if you're not there by then I'll move on," he told her, eyes absently flittering about the area. "Well aren't you a gentleman~" Robyn cooed. "But, you underestimate me. I'll find out where I am, hitch a ride, and should meet you at the Pokecenter iiiiiiin a few hours, tomorrow at the latest. Speaking of, when you get out of the dingy forest go visit the Pokecenter, I left a little gift for you!" From her tone of voice, Robyn seemed rather proud of herself, and that was enough to tempt Dom into asking about it, which they both knew was exactly what she wanted. "What sort of present are we--""That's a surprise~" she interjected, the joy in which she got from withhold said information enough for him to grit his teeth in mild annoyance.
"Don't worry, it's a good one. You'll like it," she reassured him, before something in the background drew her attention away for a moment. It was quiet for a full thirty seconds before Robyn returned, her tone much somber. "I've gotta go now, so I'll see you in a bit. Love ya, miss ya, mwa~" And just like that their call ended.
Dom couldn't help but to furrow his eyebrows as the line went dead and looked towards his communicator, his incredulous expression reflected in its screen. "...Yeah, a'ight," he muttered.

Dom shook his head before he simply slipped his communicator back into his pocket, freeing his hands up to toss his baseball in between his hands. He'd memorized the Kalos region's map, so his next destination was Santalune City, home of the first gym leader, Viola. He'd done his research on the region's gyms, after all he did plan on trying the whole 'trainer' gig, and knew the basic information on its leaders and their types. If memory served right--which it always did, eidetic memory had its perks--she was a bug-type trainer, so that meant Mercury would be his best bet. Speaking of the fox, he wondered how his and Bell's training was going on. He'd have to check on their progress soon.

The starters' training had trickled down to an uneventful search that, despite growing irritation and weariness, was still going on even after nearly twenty minutes of fruitlessness. Mercury's sigh was audible as he settled down for a personal break, his chin nuzzling into the gap between his front-paws. He'd never had been a pokemon with much stamina, always the first to tire out whenever he'd played with the other starters back at the lab. Al, through some psychic or other-worldly power, seemed to understand this and neither questioned him or forced him back to his feet, instead he only spared him a neutral glance before he turned his attention to Bell who seemed to be the opposite of Mercury: she ran about with boundless energy, only stopping whenever she heard a noise, and, when it proved to be nothing more than the wind, continued on.
It was certainly impressive.

Christin and her ragtag group made it to the forest in no time! She wasn't going to like this she was sure, since she had to pick up her board or risk getting it stuck in the grass. With a sigh, she tossed it into her bag. With it sticking out above her head and Phalanx and machine behind her, she was definitely a sight. With a chuckle, she started walking. This damn forest already to overbearing for her. Machine growled in protest since he was hitting most branches. She relented and put him away, before letting Mia out. BuT something was strange. It was like she had a cold or something. Eyes widening, Christin hurried her step. What if it was bad?!
At the next ruffle of leaves Bell pounced, figuring that even if there wasn't a pokemon she could still gain a little enjoyment from the action itself. To her immense surprise, however, the source turned out to be an actual pokemon. A little red robin who was quick on its feet and slammed the Chespin in agitation and indignation. Bell rolled backwards, catching the brunt of the attack before unsteadily rocking back to her feet. As she was clearing her vision she remembered Al's advice and retaliated with an electrified uppercut that proved to be far too successful.

It was a shame that her first battle hadn't gone as smoothly as Mercury, the only comparison she could think of that was actually relevant, but she was proud none the less, seeing as how she had come out on top.
Stumbling out of the bushes she rejoined the boys, Al taking great interest in her weary condition. "I see you couldn't keep from getting injured," he observed, ambling forward to inspect her from a closer proximity. "Rest up," he finally said, his tone of voice far more commanding than suggestive. "Don't challenge anymore pokemon, I'm going to collect a few potions and when I get back we'll continue."
"Alright," Bell agreed, far too tired to argue or try to compromise. She trudged over to Mercury, who was still resting, and plopped down beside him, offering Al a wave to reassure him that all would be okay. "We'll be right here, waiting for you, when you get back!"

Al crossed his arms loosely over his chest as he regarded the starters, then the forest itself. "Alright." Deciding to trust the two the primate scampered up the base of the nearest tree, and once alighted on one of its more sturdier branches peered down at the two. "If you do encounter another pokemon, Mercury I want you to handle it." Mercury's ears perked up, surprised, before he lifted his head up to look at Al. "What if.. what if they're stronger than me?" he asked, not exactly anxious over the idea of fighting but worried nonetheless. "They aren't." Was his simple reply before he dropped down from off the branch, his tail shooting up to clamp down firmly onto it.
"Remain alert and stay quick on your feet, I shouldn't be gone more than ten minutes," he spoke as he began to swing back and forth, his body becoming like a pendulum, before he released himself at his next forward swing, body propelling outwards and just enough to allow him to onto the branch of the next tree. He caught his breath, brushed down a few ruffled hairs, before he did it again, using the trees as his transportation back to his trainer.
Once he had swung out of sight Mercury gave a soft yawn before he stood to his paws, giving his body a firm shake, if he was going to play lookout he had to be active.

Christin hurried along. Mia seemed to be warm to the touch but was running around having the time of her life with Phalanx. The two were playing while Christin frantically put foot in front of foot. Not sure how to deal with whatever it was that was bugging Mia. Even if she didn't seem to care, of course she still did. The blonde wasn't the type to just go on without checking on her pokemon. What kind of person would?! Mia jumped on her shoulder and caused Christin to fall forwards in her shock at being touched. Mia sat on the blonde's head as the girl regained her composure before she and a certain frog had some words. Phalanx chuckling quietly from in front of them. Christin lifted her head and glared at him as he walked. Still chuckling, Phalanx ran ahead, challenging Christin to get up and get him. Without even blinking, Christin was up and after the pokemon like a shot. Mia, clinging to Christin's shirt as the girl ran. Phalanx quickly getting out of the way and hiding away. Growling a little, Christin wiped dirt off her face before she smirked, pulling out his pokeball. "Now... I think a certain Larvitar doesn't want to go back into his ball. IF not then get your lazy bratty butt over here..." She finished her growl. Phalanx came up behind her and rolled his eyes. It would be funny anyway.
Bell sat back, the palms of her hand pressed behind her and firmly into the dirt, and watched with amusement as Mercury 'paroled' the area. He had taken his sentry duties quiet seriously, for some reason, and now marched about the immediate area in a circle. "Don't you want to rest?" she called out soon after he'd passed by her for the fifth time. "I don't want you getting tired from walking around." Mercury's ear twitched and he faltered in his steps, but before he came to a complete stop he swiveled his head around to check the vicinity. "No, I can't," he answered finally, then began marching again. "The more I move around the sooner I can find a pokemon and prevent it from attacking us."
Bell tilted her chin up, her eyes following the lazy drift of the clouds above to contemplate her companion's 'logic'. "Ever since we moved we've only found one pokemon, and even that took a while," she pointed out, and out of etiquette lowered her head so that they could make eye contact. "I doubt any pokemon's going to just pop out here at random. So you really should just rest, before you tire yourself out again."
Having said her piece she simply waited for Mercury to react, and grinned when she saw him begin to trot back to his original place on the ground. "Alright," he conceded, circling the ground twice before he finally sat down. "But, I'm not going to lay down. I still need to stay alert." Bell beamed, "that's fine by me, Merc." The fox wrinkled his nose at the reappearance of his nickname, but found no reason to correct her. It didn't seem like it'd do any good anyway.
