Fire Red/Leaf Green - Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard
In the entire series, this line is the only one that ends up with double traits of Flying and Fire, which I like. Even if Ice attacks become basic against him, I can used the flying attacks against most Fight types with ease, and both Bug and Grass have a double trait disadvantage against both types. Another upside isimmunity to ground attacks which is a weakness to Fire. The trade-off: 4 times the weakness against Rock types. It also sets you up with the Legendary Dog Suicune up for a rare random encounter after winning the Champion status.
Silver/Gold/Crystal - Totodile/Croconaw/Feraligator
The reason I would choose him is because Bite is a very useful technique back in the day as it was transformed from a Normal attack to a Dark, which was very effective againsts Ghosts and Psychics. It tends to be more of a physical combat fighter than a Water user, but it's still compatable, and therefor very useful against Fire, Rock, and Ground.
Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald - Torchic/Cumbusken/Blaziken
The one reason why I like this pokemon is it's duel traits as a Fighting and Fire. Even though it opens up the weakness to Psychics and Flyers, the weakness to Rock is closed up to normal damage, and you become strong against Dark types as well. Combine that with an even scoring (If you can pull it off) of Special Attack and Regular Attack, and you basically have a full bore fighter who is willing to KO any opponent out in one hit.
