White Cliff was next, and once again Jubath could feel that her rider was properly in the groove of things. This was the Jackie she knew and loved to bits and back—confident, bold, brave, everything that Jubath herself, deep down inside, wasn't always able to be. The coordinates rang true to them both, and without hesitation the zippy green launched herself between, reappearing with barely any pause over the Weyrhold, piping up again in a rapid burst of eager joy to feel the wind beneath her wings, and rushing through her rider's short curls. We will be so good at this with only a little more practice, my Jacquol! Can't you see? What fighters we'll make... that is, if we stay with the Weyr, and all...

And though Jacquol scoffed, as she always did, at the idea of being Weyrbound... this time she did it with a grin on her face. Because, you know what? The dragon, as ever, was quite right.

It was done, it was great, they'd not had any (real) troubles... now it was home, and to rest, drowsing in the sandy pit of the 'weyr' they'd been given. The sun, the sand, the surf, it called them home to Western Weyr. Even if just for now, for a few more turns... well, that was a matter for after those turns! The easiest leap of all, it took barely a blink and they were there, coasting down with a trumpet of triumph into the bowl of Western Weyr.

With the general idea in mind, the pair hung for a moment in the sky, Cucuaranath taking in his siblings states as well as the hold with dancing blue eyes. Once he was certain and ready, they were Between with the newest set of coordinates for Solace Hold.

This time it certainly felt somewhat warmer than before, a little bit easier and shorter in the cool of Between before they appeared above the Hold. A happy bugle left the starry winged blue as he deviated for just a moment to peer at his surroundings once more. It was exciting and he was of course focused, a little. Not entirely, but enough.

I can't wait until we're allowed to do this on our own, on our free days. So this is what other dragons do. Cucaranath crowed just a bit.

Don't get too cocky just yet, we still have three more hops and this is just our first. He couldn't help but smile himself though, even if he knew there was a chance they might muck it all up. Someday we might be stationed as a Watch at one of these Holds. Then you'll have all the time in the world.

Once more they hung with the image in their head and hopped Between and once more the bluerider pair popped out above another Hold. Most of these X'ael hadn't seen either, having only come to the Western Continent in a panic of Threadfall and siblings, he and Mikhel hadn't taken the chance to even pay attention to their surroundings. And really why would they? But it was beautiful. Hopefully this was what Ezyzu and Kha got to see from time to time.

I think they have bigger concerns around the Weyr and beaches. there was affection in Cucuaranath's voice as he said it though. This could be a good thing when both of your free days align? Go for a fly around the beaches.

X'ael flushed as red as the Red Star itself and tried to cover his face with one hand in a futile attempt to hide it, when really it was his own emotions that had Cucuaranath trumpeting laughter.

If this is your first roll for this circuit, and you have an anxiety level of 1 or 2, you find yourself in dire straits and panicking during your first jump. If you have a 2, you make it out, though it certainly took a lot longer and you're now feeling extra-stressed about this entire affair. If you had a 1, you get lost forever... unless you get your coordinates double-checked.

Despite a rather smooth trip Between on their fourth jump, Cucuaranath had noticed something like half a heartbeat longer or so and let his eyes roll orange as they let the warmth of the Weyrhold whisk away the cool they'd just been in. Maybe a bit more focus and no more embarrassment on the last jump. Given that it was so abnormal for his dragon to actually chide him meant that it had concerned the blue more than a little to hang Between for a second longer.

Not that it didn't concern him either, but X'ael only wanted to focus in the moment so he took a deep breath.

One last jump, we can focus on that much right? He wasn't about to get lost Between when there was so much good happening.

Kat'eel rested his hand against Biralath's warm flank as he inspected the harness straps once more, ensuring the leather that wrapped around his bronze dragon wasn't worn or cracked. This was their first attempt jumping Between and he wanted to make sure everything was as perfect as it could be.

"All right, big guy," Kat'eel said as he returned to Biralath's shoulder, reaching up a hand to haul himself onto his dragon's back. "Looks like we're ready to go. You just keep us airborne and I'll do the rest."

Biralath turned to look at his rider as Kat'eel settled himself into the saddle and strapped himself in. HIs eyes were tinged with a bit of white, nerves making his hearts beat quickly, but Kat'eel was calm and ready to face the challenge before them. He took courage from Kat'eel and let out a heavy breath before spreading his wings to take to the skies.

All right, Kat'eelMine. I'm ready. I trust you, Biralath said, wrapping his thoughts around Kat'eels mind as best he could to give him a bit of encouragement.

Kat'eel focused on their first jump, the coordinates fresh in his mind, and with a little pop they were Between. It was cold, it was dark, but Kat'eel was unflappable and a moment later-

Ha! We did it! he cried to Biralath who trumpeted their first victory. One down, four to go.

Western Weyr had never looked so much like home as when the pair popped from the chill of Between back over the Bowl. Everything had gone rather smoothly other than an extra heartbeat or two stuck in that black nothing. Now they just had to get it down smoothly until they were hopping in and out like it was nothing. Months before this X'ael might actually have wallowed in an anxious puddle about how things were going to go. Now he had Cucuaranath and things seemed to melt away as soon as he thought about them.

Not everything, you still get flustered if I mention Ezyzu. he laughed and laughed as his rider once more tried to hide an instant blush in vain when there was no one to hide it from.

Despite their success, Kat'eel knew not to get too comfortable. He had studied the coordinates well and had devoted himself to memorizing everything he could the past few weeks to ready himself for this. Biralath had done so well in his flying lessons and Kat'eel trusted him to keep them aloft and safe in that regard. This was all on him, his dragon there for mental support but that was all.

Once again he focused on their next jump, glancing down at Solace Hold before blinking Between again. The cold stung his face, the silence was oppressive, but again they emerged victorious from Between's deadly clutches.

Kat'eel let Biralath stretch his wings a bit as they flew over Black Sand Hold, taking in the sights and sounds and smells. Jumping quickly from spot to spot would be needed during Threadfall, but only in the immediate area. They wouldn't be jumping from coordinate location to coordinate location as quickly as they might need to Between to avoid a clump of Thread, so he figured they could take a little break.

Doing all right so far, Biralath? I think we've been holding our own.

Oh yes! It's been splendid! It's so cold Between but it's so interesting at the same time, so different from anything on Pern.

Kat'eel chuckled softly. Leave it to his dreamer dragon to find beauty in Between's icy grip. He let them fly a bit longer before focusing on the next jump. Again, a few seconds Between brought them to a new location, unscathed and safe.

Biralath circled lazily above White Cliff Weyrhold, using the thermals to rise slowly as they took the time to relax a bit. Stressing out wasn't going to help and keeping a calm, cool, collected mind through their jumps was vital. Kat'eel knew that there was only one left after this and it would bring them back to Western, a place he knew and loved dearly, but just because it was home didn't mean he should get comfortable and assume everything would be fine with less than one hundred percent of his effort.

Ready to go home? he asked to which Bira gave a delighted trumpet.

Picturing the coordinates, Kat'eel focused on one final jump Between. It was just as icy and dark and silent as usual, but when they burst forth it was with a laugh and a bugle of delight. They'd done it! Their first real test Between and it had gone without a hitch. Next week would be harder, certainly, but Kat'eel knew they needed to be pushed to their limits now so when it became a life or death situation later, they'd be best equipped to face it.

Hands nervously scratched Negoncath’s eyeridges, pressing close to the pale green as they savored the last few moments on the ground. Between training had been the daunting moment standing between them and graduation -- truthfully, the pair was less intimidated by their first foray with threadfall than between lessons. But things came in steps, and they could do these hurdles as well.

Practice makes perfect, right beloved? She had pressed her head into her rider’s hands, a wing shielding the moment away while they took a moment to prepare. Cloveth and Phylideth do it when they fight, so does Killakeeth and Teth. -- Khamaith, Kolosoth, and Mesikath. Soon enough, we’ll be just as natural at it as they are. The waves of love and support rolled through their bond like a beachfront, soothing Nonami as they gave a small nod to their dragon.

“Right, r-right.” Emerging from the fan of warmth that Negoncath’s wing provided, they climbed up into the riding straps and settled in. All riders that graduated did this naturally. Surely they could, as well. If they were to graduate and hope to be tapped for Dad’s wing, this was just one more thing in their way.

Negoncath’s legs launched the small pair into the air, climbing to gain clearance for their first destination -- Western Hold. Nonami recalled the visual image of the hold, gripping onto the straps just a bit tighter as they gave the go-ahead …

1 - 2 - 3 ---

The bustle of the Hold surprised Nonami, before a smile spread to replace the nervous bubble. One down on their circuit, and the weyrling's tension drained from their small form.

It's all practice, my strong, wonderful love. We can do this. Negoncath looked particularly pleased at their successful first jump.

With their first mark down, Nonami took a moment to peek about the Hold curiously. Perhaps when they had graduated, they could visit some of these locations -- but that wasn't a thought they held onto for very long, instead turning back to the task at hand. The second was Solace Hold, and the image of the Hold was easier to recall now that Nonami had a better idea -- and a mite more confidence that came with experience.

Negoncath had peered about for her siblings, seeing the shapes of them winking in and out, crooning sweetly to any who stayed long enough to hear it. I wouldn't be adverse to returning. Maybe some of my siblings could even come.

I'd like that. Maybe take a friend of mine along... Hand running over Negoncath's neck, they drew up the image of Solace Hold once more, giving the order to take them Between...

Quote:
1. You failed. Somewhere along the way, you absolutely botched this jump. You go Between but find that it takes a lot longer than three coughs to get out. One, two, three, four...five..!... six!! Oh shaffit all! You're stuck! You can't feel, you can't breathe, and you and your dragon start to panic. But nobody hears your cries in the cold waste of Between.

Dead.

=Alternatively= you may opt out of this tragic fate by having your weyrling double check their coordinates with an assistant. It might be shameful but better you live another day, yes?

If you roll this 3 times or more, you will be enlisted in remedial lessons =and= an NPC has died. Please let Uta know so they can suffer the fate that should have been yours.

--- no, no, No, NO!

The mental halt from Nonami gave Negoncath a startle, her wings freezing a moment before continuing to beat to stay in place, feeling the fear radiate through her beloved. She peered back at her rider, whatever confidence in her eyes drained immediately to whirlpools of anxiety and panic. Nonami? Beloved?

The young weyrling's hands shook against the grip in their riding straps, biting down on their lip hard to control the cold shock of fear through them. The coordinates had slipped, had become fuzzy as soon as they had been about to --- they would have -- that would have been the e n d of them, so easily, like a whisper in mid-day. "S-sorry, Negoncath. S-s-sorry, I.."

The wave of assurance washed over Nonami, like a blanket to soothe their beloved rider's anxiety away. We are safe, you corrected us before something ill were to happen -- you did that, my quick-thinking delight. We are safe. Take a moment, we'll check our coordinates and make a safe jump. Negoncath wished nothing more than to bundle her rider's anxious form up in her wings and soothe away tears that wanted to fall -- but that would be later. For now, they would keep each other focused -- and, more importantly, safe.

Collecting themselves together, and with a gentle check with their coordinates of Solace Hold, they winked out of sight --- 1 - 2 - 3 --- and appeared correctly above the next Hold.

With the dredges of the almost failure still stinging, Nonami had less appreciation or desire to glance around at the surrounding Hold. They gave a cursory glance around, making certain to hopefully not have their jump be lost again like that once more.

Yet they could not stop now, not when they were halfway through. The third coordinate was up next -- Black Sand Hold. They could do that one, certainly. They drew a breath, trying to calm how their heart wanted to stammer right out of their chest. But they had to stay calm. Third jump. They would be home soon, after all.

With a gentle pat to Negoncath's neck, Nonami focused on Black Sand Hold, giving the nudge to send them between once more ...

... Yet once more, the mental halt came through, as Nonami gripped the straps so tight that their gloves squeaked at the pressure. The clear image they had first summoned had blurred with the deep aching worry to make another misstep -- and had once more almost cost them dearly. Their heart ached, as their shoulders shrank in slightly. Were they this much of a disappointment? The worries that had beset them before impression never dwelled long, but having two bad jumps in a row -- staring death in the face not once, but twice in such a short time?

We are learning, my little love. The ache in Negoncath's voice was almost palpable, everything in the little green wanting to tuck and protect their beloved rider away from the challenge that wounded their esteem and shattered their confidence. We can do this. I know we can. The doubt that still snuck in had Negoncath wanting to recoil, but wrapped their rider in a firmer blanket of love. Take a breath. We will check our coordinates, and try once more.

And thus, after some face scrubbing, they checked their coordinates once more (embarrassingly twice in a row, but at least they weren't dead ) -- and after a short hop, the pair appeared above the next Hold. Three down.

Shifting in the riding straps, the young weyrling took a shuddering deep breath, nodding to themself. "We -- we can do this. R- right, Negoncath?" A wave of nothing but pure, syrupy love washed back in return, as Negoncath was peering down at the Hold below them.

A few calming breaths passed by before Nonami called to mind the image of White Cliff Weyrhold -- giving the softest nudge to take them between ...
