Since Safura couldn't very well glare at the cubs without being noticed for too long, she had to keep glancing around elsewhere. Pleasantly, she noticed, the cubs weren't attracting too much attention from other lionesses. While there were certainly the obvious few who sat with the mother and cubs, she also saw other lionesses milling about, some seeming impatient, others restless and a few only just have woken up.

She was getting to her paws to go over and speak with some of her other pride sisters, but she noticed the smallest blip on the horizon. She narrowed her eyes at it, identifying it as something dark brown and getting progressively closer. Her ears twitched in interest and she decided to call the attention of others' to it.

"My sisters," She said, approaching a pale spotted lioness and a dark coated lioness, neither of whose names she knew. "What, or rather, who, do you think that might be?" She inquired, gesturing to the dot on the horizon with a nod.

Imvula stopped her limping pace, looking to the horizon. At the distance, she couldn't quite tell, and the wind wasn't, at present, favorable for catching the distant figure's scent. Narrowing her eyes, she tilted her head, before looking over toward Kuhasa. There were no other Inselele at present, and the Abaholi were out on patrol. Had somebody slipped in? "I can't tell who that is, from here... But it's not a lioness."

One ear twitched before Zola got up abruptly. She stared, transfixed, at the approaching figure. From what she could see, the figure was dark brown. Had Gabedi returned? But no, he couldn't have. When he'd lost his last fight, he'd left for good, never to return. So, then, who was she looking at? How many lions were dark brown? It could be an entirely new lion, or it could be one of the former males of the pride, raised on their ways, come back to them. Either way... There was no taking chances. Not looking away from the stranger on the horizon, she called to the others, "Somebody's coming, I don't think it's a current pridemate!"

"Not.. to?" Omisa answered doubtfully when asked what she'd been told about wandering off on her own. She was probably lucky that her mother didn't know so much about her wandering.. she never went that far, after all. Properly caught, she picked herself up and moved around to sit down by her mother's paws-- purposefully on the opposite side as her sisters.

"I don't know, do you think they'll behave if I stick around?" Kuhasa asked with a chuckle, earning himself a glare from Omisa- who opened her mouth to argue but was cut off by the approach of other lionesses. And both father and daughter were distracted by the compliments.

Khanga glanced over at Nolaku when she joined her, a smile peeking through her usual stern expression. She caught the glance but didn't give it any special mind, she was more interested in her niece's presence. She barely had time to wonder if Nolaku was looking to start hunting soon before they were joined by another lioness. Nomvula. And her attention shifted to the small family at the center of everybody's attention.

"I'd be surprised if we didn't end up with many more now that the drought's over," she answered, looking back at Nomvula with a slight smile.

Of course, Bangizwe had been acting strange, Andhaka already had his fair share of children in the pride (including Khanga herself) and Kuhasa was far too pale.. maybe it wouldn't be surprising if things stayed somewhat slow.

She didn't immediately hear the cry that somebody was coming.

User Image

Kuhasa did, though.. and he excused himself from the group around Maditah and the cubs to go see what Zola was shouting about. He looked off into the horizon and saw.. nothing especially clear. But he did spy the bird as it disappeared into the tree.

He looked back to the horizon.

"There's something coming," he agreed, though deciding an intruder was unlikely to walk right up to the lot of them and confident that getting too worked up while it was just a shadow in the blinding sun wasn't going to help. Unfortunately for him, if it was an intruder it was technically his job to deal with it.. so he stayed where he was with Zola, Imvula and Safura.

Ishaka grinned toothily back at her sister, completely and clearly unrepentant. No one had ever accused Ishaka of being shy or retiring. "Give them a few months and they will be fun to play with." She agreed easily, though she folded her paws together, leaving her sibling's flicking tail alone in favour of twisting her head to watch the cubs with their mother. "Energetic little things aren't they." She mused cheerfully, her ear flicking towards Ziyo as the other lioness spoke up. Smirking Ishaka eyed the Inselelo. "It's about time he produced a litter. I heard several females have approached him but Maditah is the only one to have a litter." The fact that the pale male was the father was pretty obvious, several of the cubs shared his silvery coat.

Meepfur

Smiling back at Kuhasa, she nodded easily. "Probably better than without." She sent a meaningful glance at the stray cub he had brought back with him as Omisa settled down away from her squabbling sisters. Kuhasa knew he was always welcome. Maditah as a Busisa, had come from a smaller pride and had enjoyed a close relationship with the only male. The distance the bonelander lions kept had always felt a little cold to her and she enjoyed simply sitting and talking with Kuhasa.

Maditah, being an older and experienced lioness, had caught the few irritated glances Safura had sent her way but ignored them. She had never understood when other females got competitive over who had cubs. Any litter was a success fo the entire pride, what did it matter who was older? Everyone could have the attention of the males, it was hardly a contest. Instead she looked up as Ukufana approached, smiling warmly in welcome at the pale youngster. "Thank you, that they are. And a handful." Maditah laughed softly as the darkest grey cub of the litter wriggled free and pounced bodily on her tan-hued sister and the pair proceeded to wrestle right there against their mother's chest. Maditah chuffed a soft laugh at the vulture's comment. "Not for long. They are growing fast." She informed the bird, idly wondering if any of her daughters would end up with a vulture companion of their own some day.

Glancing over as she felt another's gaze she smiled warmly to Nomvula. The female was welcome to approach if she wished, Maditah was not one of those over-protective mothers. She appreciated any help in babysitting the lively youngsters and enjoyed the adult company and conversation herself. Her attention was taken however by Mazuri's approch. She knew the young lioness to be the daughter of Sobala, a lioness Maditah knew through her friendship with Sanele, the pride's primory Gossip. And as such she knew of the lioness' daughters; Umlilo’umoya, Khethiwe, Umlotha, Noxolo, Mazuri and Mthunzi. Smiling at the younger female she bobbed her head in greeting. "Hello Mazuri. Thank you. I am grateful indeed, it is always a worry when one has a litter." She looked down at the squirming cubs. "No future is assured, but they have a good start."

Qisa and Ama, the two arguing cubs, had finally stopped fighting and were now in deep discussion together, evidently whatever had got them riled up had been just as easily forgotten. Qisa looked up, pointing the unusual bird out to her sister. They were used to the large heavy-framed vultures that came and went with their Cinga partners, but this one was lighter and leaner without the distinctive long neck. "What is it?" She stage-whispered to Ama before frowning at her tan littermate's blank look. "A bird..." Ama replied, uncertainly. Not uncertain that it was a bird, but uncertain about the type. Looking back at Qisa she shrugged. "Mama?!" They chirrped in unison, looking up at their mothers chin for information.

Looking up as Kuhasa stood and set off, Maditah was distracted from his departure by her two loud and demanding daughters. Turning her gaze down to them she took a moment to ascertain what they were asking about then looked over to identify what bird in what tree they meant. As such, she missed the first stirrings of unease as the figure was sighted in the distance.

Added Maditah's reaction to your post! I didn't see it before.

User ImageSváfa was a relative new-comer to the pride. An ex-Stormborn lioness she had arrived on the boarder one day and requested entry. After being accepted she had simply started to hunt and provide for the pride. She hadn't yet made any close friendships, she seemed perfectly content to do her part and keep her own council. Many had noticed her willing yet oddly distant manner but as of yet, no one had managed to get close enough to her to discover her story. Only speculation and rumours currently circulated, fuled mostly by her reserved yet perfectly pleasant demeanour and the numerous scars that littered her body. She was even more heavily scarred than some of the Qyrhyeshti females that had joined earlier in the year, yet when asked, she said she had never heard of the pride.

The old warrior was resting off to one side, part of the resting group of females but also isolated, being on her own within the crowd. The dark fur that was draped over her shoulders made her stand out amid the other females even more than her scars and braided mane did. Resting on her belly, head up and pale eyes alert, she was already watching the distant figure when the call to attention was sounded. Slowly raising to her paws she stepped out of the group and headed away from them, towards the unknown figure, stopping near the female who had sounded the alarm but not right beside the small group of Zola, Imvula and Safura, though she knew none of them herself.

"A stranger?" She asked, as being one herself she knew she wouldn't recognise a visiting member of the pride.

"Is that so?" Sher-Kha-t responded to Ishaka, ears pricking up as a gleeful smile crossed her expression. Oh, that was delicious gossip, and she needed to know more! Well, she didn't need to, she'd be happy to spread it regardless, but details were always better. "I wonder if he has...difficulties, you know?"

Ziyo rolled her eyes and plonked the Busisa on the head with a heavy forepaw. "You're terrible, Kha-t, you know that?"

"What? It's a perfectly valid question!" the former princess insisted without remorse. "Isn't it, Ishaka?"

Distracted from the sight of the cubs - which everyone else seemed to think were wonderful and delightful, in contrast to the feelings of the bitter young female in the merciless grasp of adolescence, a circumstance that didn't help the matter at all - Nolaku swept her gaze over to Nomvula when she approached Khanga to...discuss the cubs. Ugh. Did anyone ever talk or think about anything else around here? Though she said nothing, she gave a pointedly audible grunt and plopped to the ground to look suitably disinterested, at least until Zola called out. Her head came back up immediately, ears swiveled forward and blue eyes focused on the advancing shape. Soon, there'd be something else to talk about.

User Image Umkhombo marched steadily onward, one foot in front of the other as he followed his avian friend. Without Tala, it would have taken days longer to find the pride, not to mention track the Abaholi. He'd anticipated that they would be further north by now, well into their seasonal migration if not finished with it, but obviously that assumption had been an incorrect one. Fortunately for him, however, he had an ally with wings, and hadn't been forced to spend extra time searching. Now that he was finally home, or so close to it, he was in no mood to waste time.

Last any of the Bonelanders had seen him - save Bangizwe, when the golden male had just barely bested him in a fight nearly a year ago - he'd been a scraggly adolescent with the pathetically scruffy beginnings of a mane. He'd long since grown into himself, reaching a size that was, blessedly, on par with his father's line rather than his mother's. He was in good condition overall, well-fed and with a healthy coat; whatever he'd been doing, he'd been doing well for himself, though in contrast he also bore a not insignificant amount of scarring. ...as well as a few open wounds, but nothing that would be cause for concern unless they were to become infected.

A slight hitch to his step became more apparent the closer he got, the result of a pulled muscle in his right hind leg. He considered stifling it, or attempting to, but thought it not worth the effort. He'd come by it honestly, after all. As he drew near enough to start making out individuals, he scanned for familiar faces: for close family, primarily, but saw none yet. He also noted any male figures, spotting two light-maned bulks that were very likely Ehluke and therefore not an immediate concern.

And now here he was, close enough to call out and be easily heard, but for the moment, he just...kept moving forward. All this time to think of what to say, and in the end he went with nothing.

The lionesses would more than make up for it, he was sure.

As the form got closer, Imvuli could make out, for certain, that it was a lion. On the deep dark brown coat was a white nose marking that, when she thought on it, gave her the strong hunch that the lion had familiar pink eyes. Slowly, she started to walk forward, her stance optimistic yet still slightly defensive. "He's familiar... I think that's Umkhombo!" It begged the question, though - Why was Umkhombo coming back, if it was him? Had he impressed the Umholi and was now home as an Inselelo? Or was he being accepted back in as an Ahluke?

Zola's mind went back to a rainy day, Bangizwe looking over the pride from a good vantage point. There were a couple lionesses pregnant, and some cubs, and amid the lions watching over them had been her brother, Gabedi. Slowly her gaze went to the lionesses not hunting, looking for anybody from Wodi's family. If Imvula was correct, then would Ukuthula and her daughters be as happy to see Umkhombo as Zola and her mother had been to see Gabedi? How, too, would Kuhasa react? He'd become part of the pride long after Umkhombo had left. Which, if it WAS Umkhombo, then... Why was he here, and where were the Umholi?

OOC:
Double-checked it just to be sure, Imvula and Zola were adults when Umkhombo was a cub heart

Ukufana smiled down at the cubs again as they began to wrestle, paying no mind to the crowd they were drawing. She could remember wrestling with her sister not long ago when they had been small. Now she was getting bigger and older and could start taking on more responsibility, just as her mother would have wanted, she was sure.

Murmured voices and soon louder ones drew her attention away from the cubs. Pink eyes squinted against the rising sun and she had to look away for a bit as the stranger came closer. Once he was within a closer distance she looked again, taking in his dark pelt. This wasn't a male she knew, that was for certain.

"Who'zat?" Khapha said with a huff, ruffling her feathers a bit as the male drew closer. She was well aware of the rules within the pride about strange males. It seemed some of the lionesses knew who it was, though, so for the time being he remained off her 'peck out eyes' list. Her silvery head turned up to regard the other bird, smaller than she but no less a potential threat.

"If y'want me t'go rough him up a bit, I will," she said, leaning in to speak quietly in Ukufana's ear. The young lioness laughed softly and shook her head.

"That's all right, Khapha. Let's wait and see. Perhaps he's here for an important reason."

It pleased Safura immensely to know that she had been the first to spot the approaching male. That was what he had been revealed to be, thanks to the keen eyes of the others she stood with. Her tail flicking impatiently, she turned her gaze around to the others who were coming up to join them now. How satisfying.

"Should... Should we go approach him?" She asked hesitantly. If she were not with cubs, for she surely was, even if it had yet to show (she wouldn't accept any other answer, not even from her own body) then she would have marched straight up to this foreign lion and demanded to know what he was doing here. Now that she had extra reason to look out for her well being, however, she refrained from such actions and stayed with her fellow lionesses. Turning her head to Kuhasa, she asked him directly. "Are you supposed to go meet them?" She may have been in the pride for a while, but she still had a lot to learn about the various protocols of the pride, it seemed.

"Oh, wouldn't that be wonderful?" Nomvula sighed in dreamy tones, imagining the sound of tiny pawsteps all about her. Whether they were to be her cubs or those of the pride's she would love them all the same.

Her eyes once again wandered towards the little ones and Maditah successfully caught Nomvula's eye. After a shy smile, the prey-coated lioness was in the process of getting to her paws when the call for another to approach reached her ears. Turning to the voices raised by others, Nomvula found herself staring at the horizon with narrowed eyes. Yes, she could see it: a brown shape, steadily getting closer.

"Oh, um, excuse me, Khanga." She said as she moved away from the other lioness. Rather than move closer to get a better look, she found herself at Maditah's side, planting herself close to the cubs and their mother with a strong protective impulse coursing through her. She had no way of knowing if this newcomer was a threat, but he wasn't getting to the cubs on her watch.

Unlike many of the other lionesses, who had moved towards the sound of the call that announced the arrival of a newcomer, Mazuri had opted to stay by Maditah and the cubs, where she felt the most comfortable. She sat across from the mother and beside the spot where Nomvula stood. Then, noticing Dwa, one of the Ahluke, from the corner of her eye, she beckoned him over with a paw.

"Who is Umkhombo?" She inquired to the mother or anyone else listening, really. With her question hanging in the open, she turned her gaze onto the cubs and decided to engage with them, in hopes that they wouldn't suddenly rush at the new approaching lion. Some of her sisters seemed to know him, but Mazuri did not and while she was friendly to lone lionesses, lions were an entirely different story.

"Now girls," She said to the young cubs, "You're right, that is a bird." She tilted her head back to try and get a look at it herself. It didn't look like any of the vultures she'd seen the few Cinga in the pride with, but she could turn it into a lesson well enough anyway. "Now, has your mother told you about Cinga, yet?" She prompted the cubs, turning her eyes back onto the little ones. "Did you know that the lionesses called Cinga have bird companions? Can anyone tell me what sort of bird they're paired with?" She said, giving a "casual" glance to where Ukufana lay with her own vulture companion and subtly inviting her to approach with her silver-winged familiar.

She did hope Maditah didn't mind all the company. Mazuri just so enjoyed teaching cubs about the world.

Ezinothuzi had been sleeping near the cubs. As one of the primary cubsitters in the pride (since the lioness was unable to hunt or help in any physically strenuous manner) she took it upon herself to situate herself near the little ones. Ezino was ready to approach the litter if their mother should ever desire a break for herself. Still, since it had seemed as though the mother was handling the darling well for the time being, Ezino had contented herself to laying nearby and dozing.

Woken by the sound of others calling out about a newcomer, she woke with a start, looking around, before settling again. The cubs were still with their mother, she observed through half-lidded eyes, though with the news of the new lion approaching, she kept her eyes open, just in case an extra pair of eyes was needed, even with the others crowding the mother and her cubs currently.

User ImageThe pale lioness still wore her prize from the fight that won them a place in this pride. The hyena pelt kept her from sunburn where her thin light coat couldn't quite protect her enough. It was also a good reminder to everyone what they had done to earn their place. Her other reminder of the hyena battle was a slight limp that often ruined her stealth, but still allowed her to hunt.

Marmar saw the bird but decided against drawing any attention to it. Perhaps it meant what she thought it might mean, perhaps not. She was getting used to her new home, and didn't want to rock the boat. Let someone else notice the bird.

Some of the lionesses were stirring, but she refused the impulse to stand up like them. From what she heard someone was coming.

---

User ImageUkufa rested alongside another adolescent female, but her ears moved giving an almost nervous impression. She raised her head to look around, trying to see her sister.

"Have you asked anyone yet," she said to Ilantshi, "I mean, do you know who you're going to ask?"

If her friend had asked another lioness to meet at dawn for her Ukuzalwa and then been stood up she didn't want to embarrass her. She didn't even know who to ask herself, and she was worried she'd be laughed at or worse... Were there lionesses who never became Zalwa? She didn't want to be the first.

---

User ImageIlantshi didn't mind sleeping in, but her friend was awake and fidgeting. She sighed and yawned, and with that Ukufa must have decided it was chatting time. With another yawn she turned towards her friend.

"Nah," she said, "I don't see what the big hurry is. I guess I'll ask an aunt or cousin or something."

Andhaka had many children, and her grandmother Nahmba had also left a legacy of plenty of children and grandchildren. There was no shortage of female relatives in the pride, so she could pretty much just pick one. It didn't occur to her that Ukufa asked because she was worried about her own rite of passage.

Ishaka rolled her eyes, mimicking her sister at Sher-Kha-t's words. "I wouldn't know, but since he has a litter, I doubt there are any issues." She responded with an amused grin. No one could point to her as a gossip, she was simply speculating, not offering an opinion. Shaking her head slightly she was about to add something else when the hubbub on the edge of the gathering caught her attention. Lifting her head higher to see over the resting bodies of her pride-sisters, she watched the small group of four lionesses and Kuhasa as they in turn watched the stranger who was approaching. "Now, who is that I wonder?" She asked, sitting up so as to have a better vantage point.

Maditah's attention was pulled from her cubs by the vulture's words and she looked up quickly. Despite being semi-blind in one eye she could see the figure rapidly approaching. A male, and one she did not know. Unease curled in her belly at the sight and she reached out, pulling her cubs closer instinctivly. A new male was a danger to her daughters, even if he was known to the pride, there was the distinct chance that he was here to challenge Kuhasa or even he Abaholi.

Looking up as Nomvula approached, she gave the other lioness a grateful smile. 'Safety in numbers' was just as applicable to lions as it was to the beasts they hunted and she was glad to have both Nomvula and Ezinothuzi nearby. Mazuri's question received a shake of Maditah's head, as she had no idea who he was, other than a potential threat to her cubs. Nervous, but disguising it well, she let Mazuri distract her offspring as she herself kept her gaze on the intruder. Where were the Umholi? At least Kuhasa was there, but that dark male looked strong and she worried for the father of her cubs and her friend.

Qisa turned her attention from her mother to the brown lioness near by. Staring up at Mazuri with wide eyes she shook her head, fascinated already. "No!" Ama glanced between the big female (all adults were big to her at the moment) and her sister before swiping out at Qisa. "Yes she did. She told us Cinga could go out of the pride with a bird." She reminded her silver sister. Qisa turned back and stuck her tongue out. "Fine, but thats all she told us." The paler cub retorted, scowling at Ama before looking back excitedly at Mazuri. "What do they go do?" She asked, eager. Ama cut across her sibling, answering the lioness triumphantly. "Vulture!" Which earned her a sour look from her sister.

User ImageUser Image Anashe had just wandered over to join the gathering. She knew the hunting party was currently out and she was hungry so had decided to wait for their return with the rest of the pride. She had tried to persuade her mother to accompany her but the blue busisa had opted to stay at home as she wasn't feeling very well. Anashe was determined to get a good hunk of meat to take back to her mother and so was staking out the gathering place ready for when the hunting party returned. Looking to one side she grinned as she spotted Kezela lingering at the edge of the group. Altering her directioin she bee-lined to the tan and cream female who was only slightly younger than Anashe herself. "Kez!" She called out, smiling when she recieved a dark scowl in return. "Anashe." The motherless-adol returned in a flat tone which would have been enough to put anyone off, except apparently the ever-cheerful blue-marked youngster who had been Kezela's bane ever since she was a cub. "What do you want?" She sneered, eyes narrowing as the silver female drew closer.

Imvula's suggestion of who the strange lion that approached was didn't put Kuhasa at ease, he expected familiarity but he didn't know what it meant. And until he did, there were right and wrong ways to respond. Umkhombo was an imposing sight and his silence amplified this appearance.. and he unfortunately hesitated just enough to hear Safura speak up, reminding him that this was his job.

It was his understanding that he was the most vulnerable male in the pride, if there was any challenge issued it would be to him. Challenging an Umholi would require more support from the lionesses in the pride, wouldn't it?

Not that it mattered, it was only him here now.

So he moved forward and put himself between Umkhombo and the lionesses, but just like the intruder, he remained silent.

Omisa watched silently as the lionesses crowded around them, wondering if she'd get another chance to make a getaway now that there were so many lions around to serve as a distraction.. but she realized quickly that it more than likely meant there were more eyes on her.

She was distracted from her plotting when her sisters noticed the bird, and then happily engaged with Mazuri as everybody else started worrying about the visitor.

"Cinga have --"

Ama managed to spit out the answer first, leaving a slow Omisa sending a similar sour look her way. She closed the gap between her and her sisters so she could learn more, too.

Khanga's ear turned towards Nolaku when she grunted, but she maintained a polite focus on Nomvula until she excused herself. She nodded and then turned to look at her niece.

"Have you--"

Wait, something else was going on. She realized it in the same instance she saw Nolaku's attention off in the distance.. and she saw a familiar figure. He was dark, very dark.. but in the light you could almost see the very familiar patterns on his fur.

"Hmmmm."

She didn't move. Her glance wandered to the present Inselelo and then back to Umkhombo. This would be interesting.
