Josh stretched as he woke up, looking at the plushies on the bed. He wasn't the type for such toys, but he wasn't the type to throw them out either. He brushed a lock of his reddish hair out of his eyes, then tossed his clothes in a pile. He changed quickly, scooping up Tatiana's pokeball as he took off. Well, he'd missed gym class. He partially worried about his grades, but then realized that Tatiana was going to have extra energy as a result. That could be trouble. The grades could be made up. Probably.

Marcus had been considering skipping the Halloween event, particularly after the whole thing with Harvey went down. He hadn't really thought much in regards of a costume. It wasn't like he had the skills to make one. He wasn't sure which of his cousins packed the kigu ( since school had started shortly after summer) but finding it in his suitcase had made filled him with both joy and a bit of embarrassment. He was certainly glad Josh hadn't been in the room when he unpacked it...or when he put it on. He had made some small talk with his roommate while Josh got ready for the Halloween event but hadn't really had any inkling to go until he got the message from Ray. He couldn't help but scoff a bit at his friends voice, sounded like his cousin when he got himself in trouble. Usually starting calls with "see what had happened was" and ended usually with "don't look at me" and "please don't tell our parents."
"Ray? No it's fine where are ya?..I don't actually know where the haunted house is" he had come to his room to think ( not sulk!) after the fight with Kirsi and hadn't really kept up to date with everything that was happening. "I can go meet up with ya if you-" he jumped when Ray said WHAT and started saying he couldn't move "wait calm down tell me what's happening" he said trying to sound calm as calm as possible. It was what he did when his sister cried, or his cousins fought, or his parents fought. It was what his uncle said you needed to learn as Ranger, to stay calm when everyone else doesn't. It wasn't as easy as they made it look but neither he nor his uncle would ever admit to that. "Ray?" Marcus frowned when the call cut off...Ray had said something about spider webs..so maybe spinaraks? They wouldn't have Ariados in school grounds those things ate people. The school did know that right? He bit down on the concern that was trying to lodge itself in his brain. Ray's problems tended to be worse than the usual. Marcus felt anxiety and dread build up as he listened to the message, mounting as the message was cut off on the note of Ray crying. He still wasn't sure what he was gonna do. Ray cried a lot, he still had to be told to eat sometimes. Talking to Elijah seemed to have helped him, and talking to Tera had made Marcus a bit relieved ( he still kept the plushie she gave him on the shelf next to his book...shut up he wasn't lame) but...it was still a daunting problem. One he needed to solve if he wanted to help Ray. He wondered if Ray still wanted to die. Swalloing back that feeling he reached for the sneakers under his bed and janked them on. He returned his pokemon, who had been lounging on different parts of the room and stashed the pokeballs hastily away. Guess I'm going to the Halloween thing anyways, he thought, hopefully Kirsi stays away. And hopefully Ray really had nothing worse to deal with than spiders.

►Wrap ►Leer ►Poison Sting ► Marcus had spent the rest of the rest of the week since that last gym class in a pretty abysmal mood. Seeing Tera collapse had been bad enough. He had watched as Marco took her to the office and had made to follow but then he had spied Iris ( that was her name right?) trailing after them and a wave of introversion had hit him. They already had too many people trying to help, having any more would just hinder things. And there was also the fact that neither Iris nor Marco had even acknowledged his presence whenever he was around them. Iris had ignored him without so much as a hi, and Marco only seemed to want to talk to him in clipped short sentences. "Ah swear it's cause I'm a boy" he had told his cousin Katie later during a skype call. He usually only called his sister daily and his cousins biweekly but his sister staying over at his mom's Pallet town residence and his own lousy mood had led to him seeking out family calls more often. Katie had given this some thought, her face staying still on the screen frame rather uncharacteristically ( she was a very emotive talker) "Well I mean some guys are like that. They're taught that girls are so different. An entire new creature. Not the same human as them. So then they get all weird. He might just be chasin after Tera and you're just this person who's always there when he doesn't really want ya to be" Marcus had taken this with a frown. It sounded so...ungodly stupid. But he didn't dare say that to his cousin. For one, she was a teenager and well versed in how stupid people could be and all sorts of people things in general ( a wisdom obtained in High School that Marcus had yet to unlock) . For two, he'd be seeing her soon and the last thing he wanted was to make her mad. But seriously even if Marco was chasing ( whatever that meant) after girls...why did that mean he wasn't interested in talking to any boys? Couldn't he make friends with people he didn't like that way? Marcus had so much fun with Evy Eli Tera and Ray he honestly couldn't understand why anyone would wanna limit themselves to one kind of friend. And it didn't explain why Iris had also looked less than interested in being friends with him ( come to think of it, she also seemed to mostly follow Marco and then some very specific people. Wonder what that was about) "But they're not. Girls are people just like us they talk and walk and do everything we all do. It's all so...dumb. Did ya know we can't all even room together? It's like they believe in cooties or somethin" "Yeah welcome to private school kid. They're old-fashioned enough to actually believe in cooties." "Man shut up Jess, ain't no one talkin to ya" This had earned a laugh from the third party of the Skype call. Jess was his other older cousin. Fifteen but already taking college classes trough AP and headed to dual enrollment next year. He was a smartass. As Marcus was reminded as he heard him laugh at his woes and no he was not pouting shut up. He had vented all of his problems that night ( and made them promise not to tell anyone about them which they had both sworn because the cousins held to the unspoken playground rule that you did not tattle on people) It had made him realize how much he missed having family ( family that didn't hate him like oh yeah freaking Harvey) It had gotten pretty late by the time he had hung up the call. Which would explain why when he woke up ( with a pounding headache from the spore attack no less) he had realized he had slept straight through his detention. The office had re-scheduled it so it wans't that big deal, but Harvey had not been impressed. "You're kiddin right? How much trouble are you plannin to get into? I already got a talkin-to for giving my brother detention Alden" "Well..but...Kirsi missed i too! Why ain't you reamin her out?" "Not the point...what is even goin on with you two?" "Oh like you care" '"Hey! Excuse me?!-" It hadn't exactly gone as plan and Marcus had found himself even more introverted afterwards. He had tapped into the groceries he had brought over at the beginning of the term so he could have all his meals in his dormitory. He hadn't even gone outside to take his usual walks Phillpi had started pecking him to take him out to the forest. (Valiant didn't mind because he could just hang from a coat-rack and sleep and Squeeze had her own accommodations) but even that hadn't been enough to get him out of his funk. He shot out texts to Ray on occasions, then worried when he didn't get a reply. He shot out texts to Tera and Evy and found a smile when they did reply even if he couldn't really get himself to talk more or go out. He talked a lot to his cousins. After the fight with Harvey he had come back to his room ready to yank his hair out. Jess had just happened to call him to continue a game of Empire Earth and Marcus had spilled his guts and near had a meltdown. He had never been more grateful that his room provided him privacy. He was even more grateful that Jess had made him a laptop before he got to Ordell. ( computer science cousins for the win ) It wasn't much in means of power. ( basic things like cheap knock off games and word documents and netflix) and it was kinda wonky to look at but Marcus had been glad he packed it in his bag. It gave him a way to call home. Y'know after the school forbid outside contact via phones and there was no mail to speak off. That, and the fact that Marcus couldn't use his own debit card ( given to him for emergencies only) to buy anything had scandalized Jess. "What are they runnin over there a prison? It's like a totalitarian civ victory. It works but ..bejesus." That had gotten a laugh out of Marcus and he had found that for the rest of the week all he wanted to do was stay inside and chat with his cousins. He hadn't really been talkative in class and had started retreating to his room, made himself food and played games with his cousin ( they were up to day 30 in DST and that pesky Wafku mission had finally been dealt with) It was thanks to these calls that he had actually gotten back into enough of a good mood to go on his walks again. Jess had talked him into making a map of all the pokemon nests he had found and had even showed him a way to keep track of them. "It's called a Frequency Distribution Chart"the older Zumbrik had said in full on geek-ahem-Proffesor Speak "basically you write down how many pokemon you find per day. That's your raw data. You then classify them by what kind they are. Once you do that you can work out the Relative Frequency and the percentage of sightings per species...man there's a lot rattatas here. Thought a fancy school wold have rarer pokemon" Jess had been the one to make the chart, but once Marcus found how to do it, he found it a lot less daunting than he had thought. All he had to do was right down how many of each kind of pokemon he had seen. Then add them all up. Then figure out how many from the total were what pokemon. ( fractions tricked him up but yay for the magic of calculators) By the time he was done he had a chart for how many pokemon he had seen since he arrived at Ordell, and had ranked them by where he saw them and how often they were seen. He had started to see some patterns. "There's some pokemon that are always there" he had said after looking at the colorful ( yes he had used magic markers..and stickers. Hey, he was ten. Sue him) charts that now lined some of his wall. "Like the rattatta and weddle, and oddish, and ledyba. I think those are the native species and the Fletchling and Duckletts and Dedenne and Pichu just migrate...though it'll take a while to figure out how...I swear it's like a themed migration, birds an cats, and rats" "Yeah okay, and we're all just characters in a book, c'mon Alden how would theme migrations even happen" Unlike when Harvey spoke things like that, Marcus was able to stick his tongue out at the screen. He knew Jess was right, Jess knew he was joking and the cousins laughed the rest of the night away. With Marcus falling into his own "geek mode" because this was so interesting. The Pokemon migrations were a wonder, a mystery waiting to be found. And he could not wait to explore it. He wanted to go out now. It wasn't until Katie had pointed out that they all had school the next morning (after the clock had already hit 2 AM mind you) and the cousins had, begrudgingly in Marcus' case said their goodnights, "Hey and Alden?"' "Yeah yeah Jess I'll keep my head down. No more detentions" "Nah keep it up cous. Hold your head high. And remember. Hannukah soon. Lexie's been askin for ya." "Yeah...yeah I can't wait. Later gators" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- He had meant to go to bed but wasn't surprised to find he had fallen asleep on his desk chair. ( hey, a new Nature Documentary on moster-shaped pokemon had come out. What other possible choice did he have but to watch it?) It was what woke him up that had been surprising -the day will begin with the usual morning phase but to start off these events we ask that all students make their way to the Daycare by the time of Morning classes- "the daycare..." Marcus had mumbled still rubbing sleep out of his eyes "by the...by..."-yawn-"by the time...Morning Class!" he said suddenly looking at the clock "aww shoot I'm late!" He spun the chair around nearly slipping on his socked feet ( and actually sliding in place for a bit in an astounding rendition of Scooby Doo) before heading for the bathroom. A quick shower and hair product ( you did not want to know what went into making thick curly hair manageable) and he was walking around the appartment, grabbing his pokeballs, his key for the room and two granola bars for breakfast before heading out the door.

Marcus had spent the rest of the night in a...conflicting mood. On the one hand he had gotten to see dragon pokemon,on the other, hand Ray no longer wanted to talk to him. It was Kirsi, he had told him something, something along the lines of no one liking Ray. The memory still made him frown. Marcus had been so close to going up to Kirsi and asking her what she had said to Ray. But Elijah had been there, shooting him that look. Marcus wasn't looking to alienate any more of his friends. On the plus side, he had found a new friend in Iris and Giselle and had hung out with Ava and Tera. So..well, that was nice. After the dragon pokemon had been introduced he had been completely focused on them. After grudgingly, leaving the pokemon, he had been told to go back to his room and pack for another field trip. He had been told to 'pack warmly' and ushered back to his room. That bit of news had also given him mixed feelings. Marcus had been keyed up about the change in routine but also interested in a new district. He had gone back to his room, released his pokemon and just...tried to process everything.
Now the day of the roadtrip was here and he was...rather reluctantly packing the last of his things. He wasn't sure how long he'd be going so he had packed a week's worth of clothes, although he imagined they'd have to be back before they hit the 24th. Looking at the date on the calendar made him smile. Hannukah would fall on Christmas Eve this year. So he'd be getting a break for his holiday the same as the kids who celebrated the holiday.
He'd get to go home. He'd show his uncle and cousins his new pokemon. And he'd get to be warm ( Kanto was always warmer than Sinnoh) and he'd finally get to see his sister again.
But he had to go on the trip first.
Making one last check on his room, Marcus turned his computer off, put the food he had taken out for breakfast back in the fridge, and recalled his pokemon into ther respective nest ball, pokeball, and great ball. Checking off that he had everything he needed he grabbed the scarf Elijah had given him ( he hadn't meant to keep it but he found the texture really soothing, and the fact that it had been given to him by a friend conforting) and wrapped it around his neck. He wasn't sure how cold it would get ( coldest it got back home was 60s and that was certainly cold enough for Marcus to stay indoors or bulk up) but he would have to hope that his jacket and the scarf Eli gave him was enough. Grabbing his gear and bag, the boy made his way out the door.
