i usually go with water type because i like the easy going for the first part of the game. since you'll often face a rock type gym first, going with fire type is just stupid, and early on you encounter flying types that completely RAPE grass types, so water type is the obvious choice.
My total fave is Mudkip, because his evo's gain ground type.
But honestly, there should be a game where you can choose a Psychic, dark, or fighting type as the starter because that would be just so awesome

He was the first Pokémon I ever used (aaalll the way back in Red)

My fav. starter from the games for all time is Bulbasaur just cuz he's soooooooooo cute and my ultimate favorite pokemon besides, and his evolutions are cool, but probably not the MOST powerful of all starter choices.
But if we're talking power I LOOOOOOOOOVE my Monferno in Pearl! He rocks!!!! biggrin
Usually I go for fire starters though, 'cept in Bulbasaur's case
Cyndaquil is also super-cute!! biggrin

5th gen fave: Chimchar
mind you, I have never played past 3rd gen.
all time fave: Charmander/Charmeleon/Charazard
2nd all time fave: Chimchar. Flaming Poo Attack!!!!!

my favorite starter is torchic becuz it evolves into the 100% awesome blazeken (hence my name) my second favorite is turwig cuz it evolves into the 95% awesome torterra

hmm... squirtle(I love wartortle) or charmander(charizard is awesome). I used to have a level 100 Charizard that I was really attached to, and then my game stopped working, and I was super-mega-ultra pissed when that happened...for the later games, I like cyndaquil and mudkip... not sure 'bout the last game, though.

i've always liked the challenge of rock vs. fire myself and of all the starter fire i'd choose charmander the oringinal fire pokemon. Plus fire just matches me ^^
