Itzel grew up in a strict kirin herd, in which no one was allowed to stray form their ancestor's beliefs. The males of the herd were the guardians of the territory while the mares raised the foals of the herd. Young mares were also known as the nannies of the herd.
Itzel's father was the leader of the guards and spent most of his time with the other stallions of the herd. This simply meant that she spent more of her time with her mother and sister than she did with her overprotective father.
Stories of horses with leathery wings and sharp claws instead of hooves were used to scare the foals into doing as their mothers said. Rumors of horses with butterfly like wings and horses that could swim underwater like mermaids were used to entertain the foals when the nannies couldn't think of anything else to do. Itzel was one of the most curious foals of the kirin herd and wouldn't be able to rest until she saw one of these creatures for herself. That was when she decided to escape the watchful eyes of the kirin elders and nannies.
While attempting to escape one night, a colt who had seen a kalona while out on guard duty with his father tried to warn the filly of what lurked beyond the herd lands. This didn't scare Itzel, but soon after she left the lands her father came running after her. The colt had warned him of her plot to leave. This only led to her father keeping a closer eye on her until she was a young mare and about to become a nanny of the herd.
After escaping the herd one night, she found her way to the kawani lands. Although it wasn't like Itzel to stray from her mother's teachings, she was far too curious about what was out past the herd's boundary. Now, she is out to find the different creatures she was told about, especially the horses with the leathery wings.
Even though she has strayed from the herd, she still holds some of the kirin beliefs and behaviors deep in her heart. Each day, she sets aside some of her time for meditation and practices walking on water. If she happens to run into another soquili that is feeling ill or is in pain, she will help them as much as she can with the acupuncture she learned from her mother, but she cannot heal any wounds. Unlike other kirin, she does not faint at the sight of blood. It does, however, make her feel ill. |
