Mel was uncertain whether her bafflement and confusion were coming through on her text. She didn't want to make it obvious or anything, but... she was very puzzled. Unfortunately, the next reply didn't help at all with that. She placed the palm of her hand to her forehead as Cheri responded just as quickly, shaking her head a bit in disbelief. She could hardly text that fast! What, was she somehow... using telepathy or something? Shaking her head a bit, she read over the message, looking even... more confused at her response.

She... he.... what? She paused, thinking that over a moment. Finally, she got it... at least a little sorted out, or at least, she thought she might have.

From what Lafayette had said earlier... she half imagined he was flying on one of his pokemon, duking it out with bird pokemon. She honestly hoped that wasn't the case, though. As for the rest of it... she didn't really know. She assumed Lafayette must at least know how to open a message, since she'd sent him one before and he didn't say anything about it, but.... maybe that was an incorrect assumption? Maybe he didn't know how to use his communicator....?

The duo made their way into the pokecenter, and headed back to get some food, Mel still enraptured in her texting conversation with Lala's espurr. "Hey, y'know... I think Phia's wanting to battle," Brian remarked observationally, looking down at the sember. She seemed to be... smoking a lot more. And glaring. He got the feeling she had a lot of... pent up... stuff. Probably from having been on the sidelines so much. "Want me to take her out and trainer her after we eat?" He lifted his gaze back up to Mel. She glanced up from her messenger with an amused smirk. "Shouldn't I be the one training?" she remarked. She shrugged, though. "If you want, you can. Why don't you take Shaie and Bubbles, too? I'm sure they'd appreciate the exercise," she remarked. Brian's expression fell. "Horsea," he corrected forcefully, "His name is just still Horsea. I haven't nicknamed him yet." Brian hummed, giving her a begrudging look. That melted away as Mel perked up at the sound of a message, and quickly dived back down to read it. "You sure seem to be enjoying that conversation..." he commented, frowning a little. Mel shifted a bit, leaning back, but not taking her eyes off the screen. "It's just so... weird!" she remarked, gesturing at it, "Especially what she's saying. Listen to this: 'No. He can’t do that either--' She's referring to me asking if he can read my texts-- 'Yes please--' regarding me bringing her cotton candy -- 'I like the yellow cotton candy. I think it’s lemon. Or banana. I will be expecting this compensation for the information. No. Not yet. He’s using the others. I’m sure he would if allowed. Why don’t you humans just fight us yourselves? He has. You might stand a chance." She sat back as she finished reading it, looking stunned at her own reading. Brian raised his eyebrows.
"... How do you mix up lemon and banana?" he asked, narrowing his eyes a bit. She gave him a look. He shrugged, giving her a flabbergasted look in return. "What! The whole thing is weird, alright?" he added, dropping his arms back onto the table. He shook his head, pushing himself up. "I'm going to go get us all some food," he decided. She nodded absently, already working on a reply. This was probably the weirdest conversation she'd had....

Brian returned to find Mel already reading a reply. He shook his head a little, but went about dispensing food to all the pokemon, once he'd pried their pokeballs from Mel and let them out. He dropped into his seat once everyone had their food, staring at her from across the table. He couldn't imagine what could possibly be so engaging, given what he'd seen when he was looking over her text... and what she'd just read to him. Meanwhile, Mel was finding the conversation interesting.
Text to Mel: No. He doesn’t read at all. I think he guesses. Do you prefer biscuits with honey or gravy? I read once for him, I think it was from you. Please bring the pink cotton candy instead. I think that would be better.
Most pokemon are not fire proof either. That doesn’t stop them. Grass burns badly. No, not yet. I think he would win faster if he did. Your gym leaders are not very tough looking.
She was taken aback by what Cheri seemed to be saying-- that Lala was illiterate. He couldn't read? Did that mean he hadn't gone to school? Or did he just have something like dyslexia? She tapped a finger against the communicator. She was fairly sure it would be rude to ask him when they met up, especially considering this conversation was with his pokemon, not him. She wasn't sure whether it would be rude to ask Cheri, though...

That's different. Pokemon are more resilient, and can be healed more easily. Human beings can be easily killed by just one pokemon attack. You should see Crasher Wake.
Of course, they probably already had seen Crasher Wake, but... she obviously didn't know that.

Brian looked at Mel as she returned, no cotton candy in her hands, but her eyes once again glued to the screen. "You're getting obsessed," he observed-slash-warned. "I am not," she replied, and would have probably been much more indignant about it if she weren't so distracted. She smiled, though, and, as he watched her, he felt some of his concern slip away. "It's just... I mean, it's fascinatin', really. Lala's pokemon is texting. She's also surprisingly honest..." she remarked, looking a bit thoughtful. Brian stared at her, narrowing his eyes. Deciding to focus on training was probably a good idea. Brian didn't really want to get dragged into... whatever Mel was doing, even if, now, he was a bit more relieved it seemed to be more out of entertainment, than.... obsession. Mel had a very brief break before the next text, during which she lifted her head to look up and around. Brian had taken... Bubbles, Shaie, and Phia with him, but she still had hers nearby. Lucy and Z seemed to both be looking at her, perhaps noticing her fixation on the text message conversation. She flushed a bit at this, shifting and looking back down, reminding herself she was not obsessed, just.... interested. It wasn't a crime. And her pokemon were eating! It wasn't like she had better things to do! Except maybe eat.... She paused, then reached over, grabbing some of her food to start in on herself. She probably ought to look into the next gym, too.... So she could make sure she was more prepared.
That could wait, though! She set her food back down as she received another message from Cheri, quickly brushing her hand clean to open it, and read through.
Text to Mel: Maybe. He bought fries. Can I put gravy or honey on fries? Are they the same? I don’t think they are the same. He fought him, with pokemon. I’m sure if he tried he would win. Can you make biscuits? What different kinds? We are in a city. With the bug man, his pants are very bright.

That was a slightly.... disheartening thought. Well, not disheartening. It wasn't like she'd been waiting or expecting to come across Lala or anything. It was more that it was... weird? He'd mentioned coming here, after all. He'd made it sound like he'd be going pretty much directly here, in fact, so jumping off to another region seemed... especially strange. And while they weren't planning to meet up or anything, they'd mentioned possibly running into each other. It was just... a little odd. She wasn't really sure how to feel about it. She didn't have any expectations, per se, so it wasn't a disappointment, but it was also... not expected in of itself, so it was almost... Unsettling wasn't the right word either.
Oh well. She decided not to give it anymore thought -- she barely knew the guy, all things considered, after all -- and set her device down to finish her food. Once she was done, she stood up, waiting until her pokemon were finished as well, before recalling most of them save Lucy, and going to find Brian. She encountered him battling another trainer, and stood off to the side, folding her arms over her chest as she and Lucy watched.

Mel raised an eyebrow as Brian and the other trainer went separate ways, noting the slightly unnerved expression on Brian's face. "And here I thought you were training multiple pokemon," she remarked with amusement, dropping her arms to her side as she approached him. Brian looked up in surprise, but his expression quickly turned to a deadpanned unamused look as he tilted his head at her. "Funny. I tried. Phia, uh--" he paused a moment as the fire starter moved closer to him, looking down at her with unease. ".... Was doing fine on her own. I, uh... figured I'd let her take care of things..." he finished in a mumble. Mel laughed.
"Oh c'mon, you're not scared of her, are you, Bri?" she teased with a playful smirk. Brian gave a sneer back at her, and Mel turned her attention to the other two. "You two alright with waitin' a bit to train?" she asked, bending down with her hands on her knees. Both gave chirrups of affirmation and she smiled, before straightening and jerking her head. "C'mon, we should probably at least start movin' on to the next gym," she suggested, rearranging her party a bit now that they'd reunited, "I don't want to risk any of that 'disobedience' stuff you keep spoutin' on about."

Lafayette hopped from Dova as they landed in Shalour, adjusting his cap as he looked around the rather quaint city. He certainly had expected it to be somewhat bigger, given it’s ‘Tower of Mastery’ or what not (he had no real clue what that was) but it seemed rather … quiet given the circumstances. With a huff, he headed his way directly for the Pokemon center to make sure that his team was topped off, but opted to delay a moment. Oh sure, he could immediately head off to the gym but he’d been going at it for quite some time now and a moment to break would’ve been nice. Plus… he was a little curious if Mel had finally made it to this place or not.
He pulled out his communicator and looked to see if there were any new messages. He might’ve not been able to read, but he certainly knew how to tell when he’d received them or not. Though… Cheri had apparently texted various individuals in the small span of time he’d let her have control of his communicator and his inbox was filled to the brim with messages from numbers that he didn’t recognize. Speaking of which, it was probably a good idea to check on her and see if she’d come down from her sugar high. She’d been all jitters and it was rather concerning at the time, even if he had opted not to address it right there and then give the conversation he was engaged with. Regina had seemed concerned and all… of course he figured it was just a thing. Finding a nice little patch of grass off to the side of the busy streets, he produced Cheri’s pokeball and unleashed the Espurr.
Promptly he was greeted with those bright fierce pink eyes, slight tremors still seeming to rumble through the creature’s fur. She seemed less… shaky, which was certainly a good thing but still had this drugged look on his face. Her headed tilted about, seeming to note the change of scenery before looking at Lafayette again curiously. Clearly, the question was where the nice woman had gone who’d fed her sugar addiction.
"Yeh doin’ a’ight there sheila?" The Aussie inquired of his pokemon, kneeling down so that he was semi at eye level with her. Cheri directed her stare to him once more, still shivering here and there in response. He gave a frown as he eyes her, reaching a hand out and twisting her head this way and that to make sure there was nothing else going on. She seemed all there, which was good just… jittery.
Immediately though, her focus shifted to his communicator and soon she was reaching with her paws to try and indicate she wanted it returned to her. Lafayette was a little leery of that situation… but eventually relented.
"Don’ go textin’ anyone else ya hear, sheila? Ain’ got time feh ye to be sellin’ me ou’ like that." He commented as he undid the band and handed the communicator to her once more. Of course, whether Cheri would adhere to his request was uncertain but hopefully his tone was enough to suggest that doing otherwise would result in trouble.

With Cheri checked and (for the most part) all right, distracted with his communicator and sending needless texts to individuals that he hardly knew, it was time to get on to his next course of action. He wanted to take on the gym before set out trying to see if Mel was still about and promptly headed for that direction, locating the building with the large gym emblem hovering upon it. He gave it an eyeing a moment before walking inside and immediately finding himself confused. There were people on roller-blades rushing about at top speeds, with the battle arena located more towards the middle.
Lafayette stared with a disgruntled look; he didn’t know how to skate and didn’t really want to have to barrel his way through them just to get to his battle. Luckily, there seemed to be some walk ways meant for those without wheels and he took advantage of them. He was still a bit leery of all the skaters and it wasn’t made much better as a young blonde came screeching to a halt on the other side of the arena with a grin on her face. Apparently, she was Korrina, the gym leader and who he’d be challenging.
At least he wouldn’t have to battle her on skates. He took the communicator from Cheri, much to her protests and gestured her forward to start the battle. She could get back to texting after they got this gym battle done.

Despite her loss, Korrina still managed to face her challenger, and the winner of their match, with a smile. Rather than jumping straight into the compliments, she waited long enough to skate over to her prize box before sliding over to Layfayette. "There's no denying your pokemon's power," she chirped. "You've clearly shown me that you have what it takes, and so I present to you the Rumble badge!" She showed off the badge, making sure the blonde got a good luck at just what she was handing over, before she gave it to him. "But, that's not all! You can also have this TM for Power Up Punch. It's the move my Hawlucha used, it's a move that only gets stronger with each use."

Well... that was a shame. Cheri didn't quite last as long as Lafayette had expected. Without hesitation he'd returned the poor thing to her ball to recover, glancing at Korrina curiously as she offered him his winnings. He was still a bit dubious of the whole skating but offered a sincere smile and curt nod all the same. "Ta sheila, was a g'd ol' blue tha' one." The blonde remarked as he took the goods and tucked them away. He gave a little tip of his hat to her and started back towards the walkways to get himself to the pokemon center and get his team healed up. At this point he was considering the fact that he probably needed to do some actual training before attempting the next series of gyms. He'd expected Cheri to sweep the place a little better but that was obviously not the case. He could probably take the next gym in the region, it was just grass or something after all, but still he didn't want to have to go swapping between members all willy-nilly just to win battles. It got harder from here on out and his pokemon needed to last a bit longer than a single battle.
With that in mind he headed straight for the center and handed over his team for healing, waiting with Noah until the situation was handled, retrieving his team and making his way outside to let loose Dova. The Noivern cooed and gave him a face rub in response, still gleeful from her previous participation in the battle. She was certainly enjoying getting the workout and he wasn't about to deny her. He gave her a rub under the chin before hauling Noah up onto her back and climbing up as well, kicking the dragon gently into gear. He'd keep an eye out from the skies for any signs of Mel but he had a bit of a sneaking suspicion she'd long moved on. A shame really, but not something he could blame her for. She seemed the type that needed to keep moving and doing something. If she hadn't made it to the next gym then he'd see her soon enough.
