Shale knew well the many memories that were informing her every response. Her question was a good one. It showed that beneath her trained servitude was an astute intellect and a frank honesty that could have been well developed virtues in another person. The seriousness of her words and the ernestness of how she said them was nothing to the depth of meaning that her blood sang into him. He would give that question an answer that was worthy of it. "I have learned over the centuries to trust my instincts. When one is alone, waiting until you need something will kill you." His voice carried his honesty but his look seemed an almost perfect contrast with hers. While she was sensuous and delicate, subtle and refined, and covered with the scars of passions both dark and pleasant, Shale's hidden scars were from training under masters who felt nothing but bitter ambition and sullied greed. His pure black eyes that had not even a reflection to mar the oblivion within them were just one more scar as far as he was concerned. His pale skin was a shade too pale to be attractive and his skin seemed tight, nearly gaunt, stretched over delicate bones that would have looked better in a woman. He was broken in so many ways that he couldn't even feel it anymore. He did know her far better than she likely thought he could in such a short time. His blood had touched almost every part of her skin and flowed through her veins. He knew every scar and the path of every cut. Then, he chose something that his instincts prompted him to do. He opened another door in the bond, allowing her to see exactly what had happened the last time he faced opponents more powerful than himself. He showed her the battle between himself and his family. His father, his four uncles, many of their sons and some of their daughters. All older and possessing more power than him with varied talents honed by decades or centuries of training. Yet, he had a dozen powerful golems and he had crafted them masterfully. They were brilliant in performance and the long weeks of casting had paid off. The battle had destroyed the building, wasted the surrounding area, killed every living thing within a kilometer. But, he had won. He had stood alone with one golem left, the greatest of them, and felt neither guilt nor satisfaction. His blood flowing from a dozen wounds to turn the ground to mud around him. The truth was clear to him in that moment. No one deserves to live. No one deserves anything at all. Deserving things had absolutely nothing to do with anything that happens in life. He thought of showing her another memory but held back, stopping short of opening that door. The time would come for that later. For now, it was time for her next question.

Ilea frowned when he showed her the memory of killing his family. She had to work to understand why he'd done it, though. The pain over what had been done to him, she could understand. After all, she'd been used by Goh in much the same way and possessed some abilities she shouldn't have, abilities he wasn't likely to leave in someone else's control for long. When she got to the lesson he'd learned from that experience, though, it made her question why he'd saved her even more. If he thought that no one deserved to live or deserved anything at all, then he shouldn't have saved her, shouldn't have had that compulsion. Instead, he'd done something that went against that principle and had saved her from the cold arms of death, had even bound her to him as his servant. So it shouldn't have been a surprise that she was confused. But that meant that she was going to have to clarify her question to him. Or, rather, expand on it, in order to understand why he'd done as he had. So she struggled to put it into words and to express what she understood of him as it pertained to her, "I understand that in going to the demon king you risked your death, and even expected it, for the crimes of your family against the king. I understand part of why you killed them. Because of what had been done to you. That part I understand. Not the rest of your reasons, though. I simply do not understand killing them and taking their heads to the king, risking death to do so, when you could have easily sent your golem to deliver them for you. "But now, you risk death again. Over me. That I do not understand. I am not worthy enough for another to risk their life for me in such a way. It seems... noble... I guess would be the right word, if I understand your meaning of it correctly. The act of saving me at such a risk speaks of mercy, a kind heart, a..." she struggled to find the right words for the act but found herself failing and shook her head, "I can't find the words for it... But it speaks of what you no longer believe is in you when it is there nonetheless. "I do not understand those things. I've felt gentleness, kindness, only once in just over a thousand years. You knew them as a small child, before the experiments started. I was never a child. I am much like your golem, there. Created fully formed for a purpose: to see to my master's needs and desires. You seem to have none of those for me. You seem to have no needs that I can serve, no desires I can appease. So I am confused as to why you saved me, why you've bound me to you, at such great risk to yourself. Not only from your king, though. By binding me to you, you have risked the lives of all around you. I knew that Goh would eventually come for me when I ran from him and his anger. I knew I faced death in leaving him as I did. But that was only my death. You risk the deaths of others when his anger runs its course and he comes for me, just as I risk punishment for running from him. "I know the large one over there," she set her eyes on Ost briefly then looked back into Shale's eyes, crimson meeting black unflinchingly, "he believes me fickle, to change loyalties the way I have. But he does not understand. I have no choice. I must serve the one I am bound to. It is why I was created. "But you have no need of me, which leaves me with no purpose except to die at your king's command," she explained it as best as she could but knew she was still failing miserably on some level and attempted to clarify a few other things. "I can feel what you think of yourself, Master. You think yourself broken and undesirable. To me, though, your appearance is desirable. To me, your experiences did not leave you broken, but that much stronger and determined to do better with your life than your family did with theirs. Your experiences gave you a will to live that I do not possess. No, I don't want to die, but I fully expect to do so from one moment to the next. I've lived my life knowing full well that any action I make risks my permanent death. "You have complete access to my memories. So you have seen that I have died many times, only to be brought back by Goh each time. You know why I am afraid now, why I find myself confused over your risk to save my life. You also know that I feel that any questions I may wish to ask of you seem pointless to me. You will tell me what you wish me to know. Whatever you wish me to do, I will do without question. You tell me you are slow to punish and I can feel the truth of that. But questioning is something I do not feel comfortable doing. I even fear it. "So the only thing I can ask of you, I have already asked: What would you have of me?" she finished, hoping that she wasn't bungling the whole thing. But she'd spoken to him in complete honesty. She believed that she had nothing to offer him, that there was nothing she could do but bring him even more misery. Her purpose was to serve, to ensure that her master's needs and desires were met, to keep whoever she served happy or at least content. So she silently despaired over the fact that she had nothing he wanted, that there was nothing about her that he could desire.

Lareth had come out of the castle and when anyone looked at him, it sent them fleeing and moving away as the king was obviously displeased.
He looked over towards Ost but said nothing and did nothing as there was nothing to be displeased with the titan for.
Lareth continued his walk and soon spotted Shale and someone else. As he drew closer his look grew darker as he realized who the woman was and if he could set people ablaze with a look, Shale would have been on fire.
with a snap of his fingers Ilea was enclosed in a black cage of fire. If she dared touch it...well not even ash of her would remain.
Lareth approached the baron and stopped in front of him."I DO hope you have a really grand explanation as to why, you ripped open my barriers and brought an enemy of my kingdom here to my home Baron." Gone was the formality from before when Lareth welcomed Shale. The king was livid and it was taking all the control he had to keep from going on a rampage.

Shale understood her confusion. It had taken him many decades to come to that view and a very different life than she had known. And now he would have to explain it. It was more daunting in the explanation than it was in the acceptance. "Part of my actions that puzzle you are rooted in principle, some in the heart, and some in politics and the will." He began. "Killing my family was satisfying because of their deeds to me, but that was not why I took the risk to kill them. I chose to walk a different path because I chose to, mostly by will alone. Their deaths were the most logical starting point on that path. I had seen where their path had led them. I did not wish to arrive at the same destination." He paused for a moment as he knew this kind of thinking was unfamiliar to her. "I brought the heads of my family to the King myself because he would have not accepted my service if I had not. That was politics and the calculation of the mind. It also allowed me to begin again with a new name, a possibility that I had not considered until it was offered to me." "I saved you because I felt something familiar in you, a choice of the heart. I did not know your allegiance or much of your master. I also did not know that the spell I used to keep you alive until you could be healed would react so permanently with your innate nature." Shale had been cataloging her questions in his head while she was speaking, not really processing them until it was time to explain. Then he processed that one. Desirable? With my true shape ripped away and my very nature twisted? He blinked his black eyes a couple times. But, before he could come up with a worthy reply to that set of issues a more urgent matter arose... or descended... like a storm front from hell. Or a King who just received very bad news on a very bad day. ... Hell. Scorned women know nothing of fury beside an enraged king.He stood just long enough to kneel to his King, choosing a formal posture for a concise explanation. He took no action to protect Ilea, knowing that she understood all too well that he would not protect her from Lareth. He had sworn to his King and would serve him. But, he believed that this poorly thought out action would offer opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable. "Your Majesty, I was unaware of her allegiance when I retrieved her. However, the spell I used to heal her has also allowed access to her memory. There is much to be learned of this enemy called 'Goh'. I know that he will come for her in time. I intend to create a trap for him. It may not succeed but if I may have the liberty to craft a spire just within the walls but not attached to the keep I should be able to confine any mortal threat to that place, my own person, and my golems." He took only one quick breath and met the King's eyes, not with challenge but with the awareness of an opportunity that he had not looked for. "I did not erase my past by letting my enemies choose the time and place of the battle. By having suitable bait, he could be lured into a place where he would not be able to escape or survive." He took another breath. This part was slightly harder to say. "However, you are my King. If you choose to destroy her then so be it. As she has been an enemy to you at least you could guarantee her permanent destruction. If this is your choice then at least I prevented her from being recovered by her former master from the battlefield." He did not mention the specifics of the blood bond. It would sound like pleading, a thing that would only enrage his King further. If he chose to incinerate her the pain Shale would suffer would be enormous. However, he was unflinching in his position. He had provided several opportunities to his King. What the King chose to do with them was his perogative.

Ilea was frowning over Shale's explanation, trying to work it out in her mind, when Lareth showed up. Up to that point, she'd only known she was still in the demon realm, not that she was actually within the demon king's castle walls. Her crimson eyes went wide as the cage was formed around her with little more than a mere thought, showing her that Goh had vastly underestimated the demon king's powers when he'd tried to make plans to take over the realm. In that moment, she was actually grateful for the restraints that kept her where she was in the suspended pool of blood. She stayed silent but for a small whimper of fear at the words she overheard between Lareth and Shale. She knew Lareth wouldn't just kill her if he decided she needed to die. The rumors of how the demon king treated those who were allied with those that hurt what he considered to be his... Those rumors were enough to make even Ilea know new fear. Lareth could make Goh seem kind in comparison. When Shale finished speaking, she closed her eyes and waited to die, fully expecting the order that would end her life. Shale's words had proved his loyalty to Lareth, and spelled the death of her creator. She knew that if she lived long enough to be the bait Shale spoke of, she wouldn't have any chance to warn Goh of the trap. She would only be able to watch as he died. If she lived that long, her life would be forfeit as well. Either way, she didn't see herself living for very long. Her life was now at the whim of the most ruthless and deadly king the demons had ever known. So she simply knew that he would order her tortured for the information Shale said he could get from her then would order her death. She simply knew it would happen and could find no reason, no counter that would allow her to live. She silently wondered if she should plead for her life anyway but decided against it. There was nothing she could say that would sway Lareth in her favor. And with her secured in the tub, Shale might as well have gift wrapped her for the king. She couldn't move at all. Just one thought from Shale and she knew she couldn't fight either. His will was to be subservient to his king and that made her so as well. One bloody tear escaped her closed eye as she realized that if she were free of her physical bindings, she would simply kneel there as Lareth took her head, she would go willingly to whatever torture he felt she deserved. She wouldn't fight any of it, even if the physical bindings holding her in the tub of blood were gone. She would simply accept her fate, just as she had with Goh each time he'd killed her before reviving her. The master/servant bond pretty much guaranteed that she couldn't fight at all what she now faced. As much as she wanted to live, as much as she really and truly didn't want to die, she knew in this moment that it wasn't meant to be. There was nothing she could say to defend herself either. From her creation to this moment, she'd done nothing worth defending. And she faced a king she knew with absolute certainty would order her death. So she kept her eyes closed and waited for what she knew was to come as that single bloody tear slowly moved down her face to add to the pool of Shale's blood that was healing her and finishing the master/servant bond between them...

Lareth wanted to throw an anger tantrum so much right now.....but no....there were guests....and he was trying to be better....better....not weak....
He felt a slow smile cross his face. A smile that was sinister in nature as he kneeled down and was on eye level with Shale. Lareth reached forward and lifted his chin with a gloved finger and spoke softly.".....for such a man who wants to help his king, you sure know how to infuriate him. But....you have done something that not even the strongest warrior Gypsy could do....and that was capture Ilea." Lareth continued to smile and speak softly as he traced the curve of the mans chin."Now I am unsure of what 'magic' you used and I do not care for details, but if you have access to her memory, you have more than just a memory bond....perhaps a physical one as well? My strong suit is not in the magic you dabble in, but I know enough from my upbringing, that magic always has more than one attachment. So if I destroy Ilea, I destroy my powerful magic wielding baron....or destroy him to a point where he is no longer useful, and frankly that's not good as I haven't had that much time with you." Lareth removed his hand but remained in front of him."Now technically, I should kill the wench behind me. I have no love lost if I were to even erase her soul from existence. She, like her master, have annoyed me and touched the lives of people I call 'family' and I do not like that. I want her dead and she will die, but not today. Her death will come but only after we get rid of Goh. You will be in charge of her and in charge of extracting information by any means necessary. I shall allow your spire to be on the grounds within the walls but so help me....if you fail...well I think you know what I will do to you." Lareth stood and looked down at him."You may reside in the castle, but she will be in the darkest part of my dungeon. I haven't used it in years, but it is called the void. Lareth turned his gaze to Ilea and walked over to her cage of flame."It's a special place where her energy will be sapped and no one will hear her scream as noise is also absorbed. I have special tools and racks in there....and let me tell you....I will do worse than what Goh could have ever imagined for you in there...." Lareth waved his finger and a black tendril of flame reached out and burned Ilea's arm. It sizzled and crisped her skin."But even before you die Ilea.....permanent death will not come from my hand, but from Gypsy herself. I think she deserves that much after all that she has gone through with you." Lareth thought she would answer, but when she didn't he asked her a question."Before I toss your sorry beaten a** into a dark hole, tell me Ilea..what do you know so far about myself and my kingdom? A good answer may stay my hand some when I get a hold of you later."

Ilea gave a small scream of pain when her arm was burned and cowered as best as she could under that angry gaze. In this moment, she knew she had nothing to hope for at all. Not even a quick death. Then he asked her a question she knew she had to answer. So she did so in complete honesty. "I know you're the most ruthless and deadly king to ever rule over the demons. You're more powerful than Goh imagined you to be. And I know I'm looking at my death when I look at you," she told him, her voice actually shaking with her fear. "Goh intended to undermine your rule, make your subjects doubt you. He planned to take you down that way so he could take over the demon realm. But I can see that he underestimated you greatly. It would take all-out war to take you down, but even that is doubtful. You command strong allies, and inspire loyalty in your subjects. But your wrath is the stuff of legends. I know now that I will never leave this realm alive. And I know I will learn new meanings for terror and pain before I die," she added, giving him information freely without hiding her fear of him or her certainty of her impending death. The information she gave him, though, was more than useful. It told him why he'd been having trouble with his servants and warned him of what he was likely to face with his Barons. It also told him how long Goh had been working in the shadows to attempt to undermine his rule. In this moment, she revealed that she knew more about him than most of his demons did. She didn't try to save herself with that information, though. She simply gave it to him as he'd asked of her. She licked her lips nervously and cautiously raised her eyes to meet his, knowing he'd be able to see just how terrified she was right now, "And once I am dead, there will be no one else to know what his face looks like under the mask he constantly wears. I can tell you how much of a force he commands, the size of his army and types of creations he will eventually send against you. But none of it will compare to what you command. He knows of your Incubus assassin and craves the power in the woman you've claimed as your mistress. But he knows nothing of your guardian or of your newest Baron. His information comes from two of your Barons. They opened talks with him when you claimed the woman, information in return for one of them taking your throne. He will betray them, though, and take the throne for himself," she gave him that information freely as well without hesitation. "I know none of this will save my life. But you should also know that my bond to Goh has been severed and replaced. I can only do as my master commands me, serve the one who controls my life. You were right about the bond that has formed between myself and your new baron. Killing me will weaken him. But he can control that... If he severs the connection before I die," she finally gave up that bit, letting them both know that there was a way to keep from weakening Shale when her death was required.

Now Lareth usually would have been preening with pride as she basically told him how powerful he was...how his wrath was that of legends that had spread across realms as she knew about it.
But he didn't puff up or show any sort of self indulgence in the relishing compliments.
No his eyes flared for a moment but then went back to their simmering hate.
Hearing that Goh had long since been working inside of his realm, making his subjects doubt him, planting disloyal servants into his midst, turning at least two barons against him, had Lareth already plotting his next few moves.
Lareth reached through the flames as it did nothing to him and he grabbed her by her hair and yanked her close to the black flame bars. It didn't touch her, but was hot enough for her to feel the heat coming from it.
"You are quite the chatter box....I think I will spare you some pain later...but tell me...were you there when he spoke to my barons?"

Ilea cried out at the pain and whimpered as he pulled her head close to the flaming bars, knowing that just one small touch from those flames would be agony. "He kept me away from those meetings but for the first one. That first meeting, I was chained at the foot of his throne as an example of what he could do. But he had me blindfolded so I never saw their faces. They spoke of the woman, wanting her death guaranteed in return for the information they had to give. After that meeting, I was never with him when he met with them. He either gave me tasks to do or left me sealed in his rooms. He always came to me after and told me what his plans were, after he was finished with me. He talked mostly of what he would do to them once he had the realm and the power he could get from the woman," she told him quickly. Her fear was one thing she'd learned long ago to never hide and she was actually shaking with it now. But Shale's loyalty to Lareth had her spilling information like an open book, though her fear had the information coming out that much faster.

Lareth let go of her hair to allow her to move away from the bars. He thought on what she had revealed. Goh was smart to not allow her to see whom he was dealing with.
But the man had made a mistake.
She couldn't see their faces, but she heard their voices. Not only had they planned to usurp his throne but to kill Cynthia. His woman. His lover. His mistress. His future queen.
They crossed a line when they involved her.
Goh crossed a line.
Lareth was not a very forgiving man. "You have earned a bit of leeway during torture. You have given me invaluable information." Seeing her shake and speak in fear had lareth inwardly relishing it to a point he was slightly turned on.
Not by the woman before him, but by the energy of her fear.
Without looking at Shale, he gave an order to the man."Up and on your feet Shale. You will be helping me take Ilea to her new found quarters in the void. After that.....you and I will be having a talk about Ileas information. As for you Ilea....you best enjoy what time you have left."

Ost simply looked on. He felt some peace, knowing that he had served well this time. The wards were already restored and nothing else was challenging them at present. The information he overheard was merely irritating. He would capture in ice anyone who he knew was a traitor, but the King would punish them in his own way. For now, he would only remain until the woman was removed to the dungeon. Then he would return to his duties.---------------- Shale was not moving at all when his king touched him. He wasn't even trembling the way a normal person does. But that was how his own deeply buried fear manifested. It simply awoke his self-control to such a point that normal functions were suppressed. He could feel a part of Ilea's pain. The King's decision was not what he had hoped for but... it would allow him to begin to prepare for his planned trap. He also saw Ilea's memories as she called them up unconsciously in order to answer the King's questions. Her loyalty seemed to match her master's. A thing to remember. It seemed that her present position was entirely due to who was allowed to be her master for all that time. But, that did not erase the pain of those who she had hurt. The new Baron rose to his feet when commanded and called a small group of ravens to him. Six of them answered, hovering nearby until the cage of flame was removed. Once they could get to Ilea, they grabbed her with their talons by the shoulders as well as her bound arms and legs. Shale also called his archer golem to follow, keeping its arrow ready in case of any interference or an escape attempt. He knew that Ilea would not attempt to flee and also that she could not breach the bonds on her body. But, he did not survive over four centuries by living overconfidently. The pool of his blood destabilized after she was removed from it and ignited, burning with brown and grey flames until only the bowl shaped depression in the stone remained. Shale allowed Ilea to know through the bond that her honesty to King Lareth had pleased him and that he needed her to continue doing as the King commanded. Shale obeyed without a word. However, he was concerned that having her in the dungeon of the keep would negate the benefit of isolating her in a tower. The residents of the castle would now be at risk from any attack made by Goh. Shale's silence seemed more a worried one than a patient one. The King had accepted his plan, but... perhaps there was greater wisdom in the girl being stored in the dungeon for now. It would take some time to finish the shielded spire that he had in mind. When it was complete it would be impossible to scry through and no communication could pass either in or out. It involved a persistent version of warp magic that would make it more like a pocket dimension than just a building. Also, no matter how much power or destructive energy was wielded within it, no energy would escape to damage the castle. Shale would take no chances. But, Ilea would need to be inside the spire for the trap to have any chance of success. True, the King could kill Goh. But, Goh would wait until he could strike without encountering the King. That much he knew from Ilea. Perhaps there would be time enough after all.

Ilea let out a whimper of fear as Lareth released her and turned wide eyes to Shale as the king spoke to him. She hadn't even heard rumors about the Void that Lareth spoke of, though what she'd heard about his dungeon was bad enough. So she was justifiably terrified. But she didn't ask Shale to step in for her or ask for any changes. She simply accepted her fate, however terrifying it would be. Then the cage was gone and Shale's ravens were lifting her up and she made a small pained noise when their talons pierced or scratched her skin. But she didn't struggle. She knew it was useless to do so. Instead, she closed her eyes and forced herself to relax as she was carried away. But in removing her from the bowl of blood, the numerous scars that covered her pale skin were revealed. They showed everyone who saw them that she was used to pain and torture on a level that even Lareth had never seen. There was no part of her left unscarred. ((Exit to the Void))

Lareth lead the way to the castle his mind set on the void and how he planned to deal with Ilea.
Shale quietly followed and Lareth caught a glimpse of the man. The man was thinking hard and Lareth what the male was thinking.
Yes there was a danger to keeping Ilea in the castle, but, there was no where else until the spire was erected.
Besides, he had faith in Ost who sat perched nearby to keep his home safe. If the half titan didn't...well....the only half titan in the realm would be no more.
As they all walked, Lareth also saw the scars on the womans body but it didn't sway him in any way. She was still going to be punished for her part in Goh's crimes.((Exit))

Lareth and Shale came back up top from the Void and dungeons, neither one speaking to the other.
Lareth lead shale to the parlor and had him sit.
As Shale sat down, Lareth went and looked outside the window."How long will it take for you to build your spire, and how much 'power' do you need to create such a place to put Ilea in?" Lareth needed to know as so many things had fallen into his lap and now that the Layline was gone....well, his magic would be tied up tighter than a corset on a woman.

Shale sat as instructed, resting physically while his mind continued to plan. The King wanted a specific amount of time. The trap would function fairly soon but to truly make it impossible to escape would take longer. He took several long moments to do some quick estimates. Then he answered with a decisive voice and without any of the formality that the King had abandoned earlier. "The structure will require two days of uninterrupted casting. Another day will make it secure and complete enough to hold her. Two more days to craft the seals and trap spells necessary to defeat Goh. After that, I intend to continually improve the trap with golems, wards, reactive and aura magics. So, five days to full function. But, only three to hold her securely without any possibility of her location being detectable from the outside. So long as her transfer is concealed from any of Goh's spies he should have no knowledge that she is anywhere but the void until we are ready." With the first question answered, Shale turned his attention to the second. The King seemed to think that his power would be necessary and it was already stretched thin. "Majesty, I am not in the habit of proposing tasks that I cannot perform myself. The amount of raw power involved will be immense, but well within the range of what I have handled before. While I do not have the immediate access to raw power that you do, I am able to continuously pour power into a spell for long stretches of time without stopping. I trade time for power, Sire, and my estimate for time includes repurposing my golem ravens to act as additional components in the casting at various critical stages. Should you have power to spare then you would be able to hasten the process somewhat by channeling it to me through my archer golem. But, it is not necessary."
