Round 3 - Day 1 - Roll 2: General Grid
Brown Hessianth: 14/14 hp
Held saves: 1

Quote:
As you're flying, you notice one of your wingmates in trouble! You call out to them, to try to warn them, and hopefully avoid witnessing a catastrophe. Save! Remove all damage from a single roll for this Round!

Vedmath's downing was going to weigh on the brownrider pair as they continued their circling, and Hessianth was more than wary on behalf of all of his siblings who were still in the air - and could still be saved. The alertness suited him, though L'nik wished it hadn't been a side effect of so many ill factors.

But if another was in danger, they'd respond. They'd be ready.

Round 3 - Day 1 - Roll 3: General Grid
Brown Hessianth: 14/14 hp
Held saves: 1

Quote:
No Thread is near you, and there's nothing really to be done. The winds are calm and you're in good spirits. You've got this. A moment to think, a moment to breathe. Look at you, fighting Thread like a real rider!

With the chaos of dragons switching in and out, L'nik took a moment to clear his head while no thread was immediately nearby. He'll be fine, Hess. Just like the rest of them. We're doing well and we can go check on them when we get back. It wasn't anything Hessianth didn't already know, and they were doing well to keep their heads clear for the time being.

But worry wasn't easy to convince away.

Day 1 / Round 3 / Roll 2: Bad Luck Grid
Blue Aramath: 11/12 HP
Held saves: 0

It wasn’t long before Silviu began to feel… rather sick. The sensation was coming off of Aramath in waves, coupled with audible rumbles from the dragon’s innards. The boy knew then that he had stupidly fed his dragon too much firestone. When the chance came to flame a nearby clump, Aramath let out a huge belch, the flame bursting out in a large, nearly round cloud instead of a straight line. By some miracle the blue was not singed, but he trumpeted in panic and nearly went between. Silviu leaned forward in his straps, physically embracing the blue’s neck to get his attention. Aramath. ARAMATH. CALM. I need you to be CALM.

I’M BURNT! IT HURTS! the blue shouted in his head. Aramath’s flying was becoming shaky, and they were beginning to edge out of formation. A dangerous red was bleeding into his fear-white eyes.

You are NOT burnt. It’s only a little bit of ash. You are OKAY.

5. You're just not feeling good. You're tired, you're sweaty, you're stressed, you're upset, your dragon is hurting.... but the show must go on. Thread isn't over, and though you're dragging, you know you have to keep up the fight. Welcome to the rest of your life. There is nothing glorious about this fight.

Round 3 / Day 1 / Roll 1: Ambitious Grid
Blue Tinanath: 10/12 HP
Held saves: 0

Quote:
1. In your dragon's haste to get Thread, you completely overshoot the target. Your dragon's tail and foot get caught in the tendrils, forcing you to blink Between. Ouch! -2 HP

There was the signal! Tinanath practically leapt to form up with the second wave dragons in the Weyr bowl and bugled in excitement. It's our time, Phaymine! We will show everyone how it should be done! Waves of impatience and anticipation washed over Ph'ton from his dragon. Tinanath wanted to get going now!

Ph'ton checked his ridiing straps grimly. He knew how dangerous this was going to be. Thread had killed his mother, after all. He too felt anticipation -- anticipation at finally avenging her death. Focusing on the task ahead, he urged Tinanath to take to the air and go Between with his clutchmates to enter the fray.

It was nothing like he imagined it'd be. Even at the lower altitude, there were dragons everywhere, swooping and diving in pursuit of the silvery clumps of Thread that slipped through from the upper levels. Spotting a clump that no-one was on, he patted his blue's neck. I see it! Tinanath blinked Between to reach it -- but his aim was off, or the Thread twisted in an unexpected way, or something, and instead of appearing in a position to flame it, the clump was behind him! Before he could react, the Thread had wrapped itself around his rear leg and tail, and the young dragon bellowed in pain.

Between! NOW! ordered Ph'ton, and Tinanath blinked into the frigid nothing of Between until the writhing tendrils had frozen into dust. 1… 2… 3… The pair re-emerged and rejoined the formation. Tinanath was more than a little embarrassed, even as the Threadscore throbbed painfully; he hoped no-one had seen that. They'd get it next time for sure!

Day 1 / Round 3 / Roll 3: Bad Luck Grid
Blue Aramath: 11/12 HP
Held saves: 1

Aramath bent his head, scrubbed at his nose with a paw, and saw that, once the ash had been wiped away, that there was no burn. It seemed to mollify him a great deal, his flapping becoming strong and regular again. Silviu patted his neck, relief washing over him even as he continued to send encouraging thoughts to the blue. The next clump of thread that came near them received a quick gout of flame from Aramath’s mouth. The boy almost laughed as surprise and then a powerful burst of pride swelled his dragon’s hearts.

Quote:
6. Everything. Hurts. Your dragon is in pain, you're in pain, and you're exhausted -- physically and emotionally. Nothing seems to be going right, and everything seems to be going wrong. Ah, but the day is not yet done, and the story is not over... No, depsite your pain, you find a new wave of hope, or at least determination. You will not let the Enemy win! In fact, you see where a wingmate is in trouble, and are able to call out to them in warning--or might even be able to save them with a burst of flame and speed! You earn a save! Another clump of Thread slipped through, and before anyone else went after it Tinanath blinked Between to get it. Once more he misjudged the distance, and once more he got scored on the tail before he could twist around to flame it. He roared in pain and frustration as he immediately went Between to kill it.

I think you're gonna have to calm down, big fella, Ph'ton advised the blue once they re-emerged, and pay attention to exactly where the Thread is! He couldn't understand it -- they had done so well in Between training! It had to be that Tinanath was just so excited to fight Thread that he was miscalculating his target's location. They'd have to be more mindful from now on!

Tinanath grumbled beneath Ph'ton. Oh all right. I just want to flame Thread! And of course show up his siblings, especially Strigonth (who had gotten to be acting Wingsecond in the first wave!) But the blue knew His was right -- if they continued to charge in headlong as they had been doing, they weren't going to be effective at all. And what kind of example would they be setting then?

He saw several clumps of Thread break through from the upper levels and bugled loudly at his wingmates to warn them. With a proud smile, Ph'ton thumped the blue on the shoulder. See? This is how we should do it! There would be plenty of Thread to flame; even though he too wanted to destroy as much of the silver menace as he could, the young rider knew they wouldn't be able to do it if they weren't more mindful of it.

Round 3 / Roll 1 - Gen Grid
Green Gallath 10/10
Saves 0

Yevalee let out a breath, checking one final time their hair, Gallath's straps, their gear. Everything was in place and secure and they slid up, settled up, boots lightly placed against Gallath's thicker sides. Gallath never lost the weight she had as a hatchling instead keeping plump.

It worked for them though and Yevalee couldn't find anything else to focus on cept now it was the sky, the formation of their fellow wing mates and the falling thread. They didn't do anything new, it was classic maneuvering... classic shift and it felt good.

It was dangerous but they could do this. Gallath flames were bright and steady and hot, burning away the silvery clump and a subtle shift and they were back into the formation.

5. It's a classic textbook maneuver. An ugly strand of Thread is falling down, drifting, blowing, squirming on the wind. If it stays course it will put it right in your airspace. Your dragon shifts position, veers, and manages to catch the tangle with a belch of flame. Nothing to this Thread thing, nope!

Round 3 / Day 1 / Roll 1: Cautious Grid
Blue Loreleth: 12/12 HP
Held saves: 0

J'lar could feel how his blue trembled beneath him. The blue dragon knew that some of his beloved siblings were now scored, and some badly at that. He knew that very soon, he would be risking not only himself, but his rider, too. Would they meet death? Would anyone mourn for them if they passed? The dragon had never thought much about what would happen if they died, but his green sister, Nzambith, now had the blue wondering.

Death might not be frightening. but it still hurts. I would miss you terribly so, Nzambith. I would ache for your loss, for never seeing your pale hide, or getting to hear your sage advice. He creeled in distress.

But her words of her riders fear, and her own suggestion at calming, did help. He knew he had to be calm, and alert, but what if something happened? How could he save them? How could he help them? "You'll help but fighting Thread. This is what we're here for, i'nt it?" J'lar asked, reaching down to thump his blue's side. "Now come on. We'll be all right. We'll be fine. Ain't nothin' to it." J'lar spoke, sending soothing thoughts to his hot-mess of a dragon.

Loreleth creeled again, but there was nothing more he could do. Do we have to? Came the pathetic question.

Yes. But we'll be together. You want to keep your friends from hurtin', right? Then killin' the Thread is it. Stoppin' it from hurtin' anyone else, or takin' the hurt for 'em. J'lar wasn't afraid. Growing up as he had, death was an inevitable fate. The strongest survived, the weak were culled, and the most you could hope for was a bit of glory before you fell. Being a dragonrider gave him purpose. He had Loreleth, he had found his match, and he had something to fight for until they failed. Thread might take them out, but that didn't bother him none; he'd long accepted such an end. Kharin might not be there to see him, but he liked to think the man might have been proud. Would have been proud. Fighting was something he knew, and though this fight was different than his usual style, he'd never run from one in his life.

"You've got this, baby. Don' even think twice about it, eh? Just focus on me, 'n the Threads." Keeping Loreleth's focus was going to be the hardest part of this battle, he was sure. But maybe, once they were up there, his blue would be too busy keeping the enemy at bay he wouldn't think about the others....

Be safe, Nzambith. Be safe, my siblings. Goodbye, mother. The little blue reached out to those around him, sending a spike of alarm, but also a wave of steadfast, unconditional love and yearning. I love you all. Words that he did not say lightly.

When J'cheyn and Savaceth gave the signal, Loreleth sprung into action. He was a heavier dragon, but he had actually mastered the art of flight. He took to it well, and seemed to enjoy flying with his rider immensely; it brought new freedom to the both of them. But they were flying to a fate unknown, and Loreleth was afraid of what he might find.

One... Two... Three....

- - - -
Everything seemed to happen at once. As soon as he arrived, one of his beloved clutchsiblings fell from the sky. It was the first thing he saw, and he shrieked with alarm. Vedmath! No! Please save him! Save him!. This was horrible. The sheer terror and concern and alarm almost threatened to spook the dragon back to the Weyr...or back between... But J'lar was firm and constant.

"Ya gotta focus, Lore!". This wasnt even a higher level wing and still the thread was everywhere. Seeing the writing masses so close caused even J'lar a moment's fear. But he pushed it back, ignored it... The time to fight was now. This was no different than any other battle.

The blue dragon was feeling awful. He turned his head back, wanting more stone.. but when he caught the rock he wound up biting his tongue. The pain seemed to help draw the blue back. Thread would hurt them all. He had a duty to fulfill...he had to face down the enemy and win. He couldn't just cry or weep.... He had to fight. For Vedmath. For Brieteth. For J'lar. For all his beloveds... Though he was feeling ill (and expected to lose his touch with Vedmath) instinct still gripped the blue. This fight was his fight. The better he did, the better he'd feel... And the safer Pern would be.

(Will fill in after the DMV. xD )

6. You're gong to make sure your dragon doesn't run out of firestone. You keep feeding your dragon the precious stone, even when they're not asking for it. Unfortunately, your dragon winds up biting his or her tongue bad! Ouch! Furthermore, they're feeling very bloated and a little ill.... That's probably not good. Maybe you should hold off... -1 HP and your next roll must be from the Bad Luck Grid!

Round 3-day 1- roll 2- gen grid
Green Gallath 9/10hp
Saves 0

Something was wrong and it was scratching at her mind but she wasn't sure what yet. They had gotten up and she had flamed and it had burned but there was noise all around them. Individuals were getting hurt and she felt a slight nudge from her rider to focus and there was thread in front of her. Gallath swooped down and flamed.

Yevalee winced as they lifted to high and shifted. They had checked those straps but something had shifted or were just a tad loose. They scrambled to adjust the straps and tighten them. And catch a glimmer of bronze falling down.

She whispered, tipping back to see the bronze, rage growing in her eyes. The thread dared to hurt her brother. She hissed, anger smoldering. IT WOULD DIE >

2. Your dragon swoops down to flame a writhing silvery Thread, but your riding straps are just a little bit loose. The sudden fear of feeling yourself lift just a bit higher in the straps than you like is terrifying as you fear you might slide off. Furthermore, when your dragon swoops back up to return to formation, you're forcefully returned to your seat! You're able to tighten the leg strap with shaky hands, and were never at risk of actually falling off, but it's not an experience you want to feel again. Your tailbone is going to object for a few days. -1 HP Rider Damage.

3. Your dragon spots a silver strand of Thread. You visualize the space you need to go to flame it, but don't take into account the wind, or your dragon's flight speed. Instead, you appear Between but have completely overshot your airspace and are now out in the open, exposed, and with no Thread anywhere near you. Shaffit all! Don't you look the fool. Whoops.

-----

It seemed that with Strigonth no longer in the air that Illiandinth was a trifle... frustrated. However, now was not the time for such antics. C'sar grit his teeth when they arrived into a completely empty patch of air. This was not the showing he wanted to make as Wingsecond.

The blue dragon wasn't feeling particularly grand. His mouth stung, and though he fought admirably, he couldn't help but feel miserable. And yet, with every belch of flame, with every maneuver that helped turn Thread into ash, the blue couldn't help but hope. He was worried about Vedmath, so very worried, but he was not yet dead. And though he knew some of his clutchsibs were in pain, none of them had died, either. In fact, they were all slowly getting through it. They were doing their part, they were defeating the menace of Pern.

When fear gripped him, the blue found his rider's endless support; the large man did his best to keep Loreleth on task. The fear he felt was pushed to the side as he focused only on staying on task. This was what he was hatched for, was it not? Every successful attack on the menace was one less risk to his fellow weyrlings, and the golds below. He was afraid, but he did not need to let fear rule him. He... He could do this! He was doing this! He would protect them with all his hearts. He loved them all too dearly to do anything less.

Vedmath fell from the sky.

Vedmath fell from the sky, and for the first time in his short life, Illiandinth was helpless to do anything about it. He had never been unable to change any aspect of his fate, and yet he must watch as his brother, rival and perhaps even enemy though he might be, fell. Illiandinth growled, flaming at thread that would not threaten him, try though he might to challenge it. He was the master of his state! This Thread is incorrigible, the Bronze grumbled, and C'sar did not have the words, at that moment, to explain that there was nothing that could be coherent, could be reasonable, about a wriggling, mindless entity.

Aleyath burst back onto the scene with a vengeance, failing to immediately notice that one of their number had fallen until he was already in the thick of things. Confusion and alarm made the brown falter, setting off a chain of events that seemed to play out as if they were underwater.

This... was unacceptable. Frustration licked at Illiandinth, and C'sar reached through their linked and clamped down hard. Focus! They were not here to be self pitying! They were the Wingseconds of the hour, and by Faranth, C'sar was not going to simply wash out of it.
