He goes by 'Dir' (pronounced like the animal 'deer'), instead of by the more common 'Sam', mainly because he likes being creative and doesn't mind being different, in fact he finds that in itself rather inspiring.
Dir is as his name suggests, imaginative. He dreams vividly and can recall most, if not all, the details of those dreams. He thinks that each of his dreams mean something, even if it is something as simple as 'Today is a good day to play chase with my siblings!' or even simpler such as, 'Respect nature.'
He is also very artistic, as in he is able to transfer his dreams and ideas and thoughts into physical art. Painting is the most common art he'll be found making, but carving (though second by a very long shot) is another one of his favorites. Art, he feels, is how he likes to express himself and believes it is the best way to do so because then he doesn't add unnecessary details, but instead leaves it partially up to interpretation.
He likes to see and hear everyone else's reactions and opinions of his art, and uses that input as critique to help him become better at his art.
As for what he's really like, he is calm but passionate, quiet but blunt, and is practically incapable of lying. He never means to hurt anyone and will try to tread clear of being rude, but sometimes his bluntness may come across as hurtful, and this is something that he needs to work on, something that I see him consciously trying to fix as he ages, but will probably need help doing so.

The Prompt:
You have always been told that you have a huge family and tomorrow is the day your parents take you to meet them all in Eden. You have been told you are going to be travelling up to the mountains, a place you have never been. Describe your feelings and what you think tomorrow will bring. What do you think your family will look and act like? What do you imagine the mountains looking like? Are you excited or a little nervous?

Dir had just been told that tomorrow is to be the big day. Tomorrow he would go to the mountains and meet the massive family that he was a part of. Dir couldn't be any more excited. He had been growing bored of painting the things around the clearing where he and his siblings had been born. There were always dreams to look to, but he was excited to finally see some new faces and new places to add to his memory collection of scenes and even more importantly to him, to inspire him to create more beautiful paintings.
It hadn't taken the foal long to discover his artistic abilities. His first meal after popping out of his basket, in fact, had been a catastrophe to any Soquili that tries to stay constantly clean. But for Dir, it had been the most wonderful discovery. His berry-stained hoof drew lines this way and that in the dirt underfoot until there were a series of strange characters and figures dancing in front of the treeline. Since then, he had gathered everything he could find that gave him new colors along with very carefully peeled pieces of bark as canvas and began to spend most of his spare time painting.
This excitement over meeting his new family had inspired him to draw a very special painting for just that occasion. He found lush greens, dark browns, firey oranges, and varying cool blues to mix and mash together into a scene. He took his time, chewing his lip and cocking his head to one side, then the other. Oranges and yellows first, for the orb that was their sun. He had been told that mountains are like really big hills with the tallest of trees, the biggest of boulders, and a cap of white fluffy... snow... whatever that was. So next came the solid greens for the trees, slurring into the dark browns of boulders and smoothly into the white smear of snow. There, he had a mountain. He wondered if the mountain would be hard to climb, and just how big it would be. Twice as tall as momma? Ten times as tall as momma? Surely there couldn't be anything much taller than that! He shook his head. He would find out the details tomorrow anyhow. On to the next part of his painting.
He glanced up and found his parents grazing a little ways off. He loved them very much, in fact, family was very important to the little foal and he will grow into a strong stallion and have a big family of his very own. He watched his parents graze calmly, sometimes nudging one another affectionately, and he studied them carefully, trying to figure out which parts could be parts that the rest of the family had too. Wings. Yes, that had to be a big part that their family had. He was hearing about how his relatives fly about and do this or that together and whatnot. He was looking forward to meeting them, but he did feel a little nervous. He didn't know any of them! What if he didn't like someone? What if someone didn't like him? No, no, he shouldn't be thinking like that. He shook his mane out and returned focus to his parents. Wings, that's right. And so he began to paint those too, half flutter, half angeni to represent both of his parents, and what he assumed the rest of his family would be like too.
There. He stood up, shaking out each of his legs as he looked his masterpiece over. A crooked smile cracked his lips and he nodded. It was perfect. Not only that, it was the perfect gift to give the Alpha. That was whom he was told was in charge. And he definitely wanted to make a good impression! What better way than to give them a piece of his mind in a painting? Rolling up the bark, Dir took the painting and stored it with the rest of his supplies before curling up himself around them. Tomorrow would be a big day, and he wanted to be ready for anything. He settled in for a long night of vivid dreams of flying among the clouds, and persuasive breezes, and warm muzzles snuffling at him. It would be a dream that would live up to the warm realities of his loving family in the days to come.
