Is it just me or is anyone else sick of people stereotyping you because of the music you listen to?
I am, I love all genres, part from rap, I used to like Will Smith but that’s about it. I like all types, for God sake. I even like Frank Sinatra, I admit though that my first love is rock and all the different genres within that wide area. But just because I like “emo” bands, like My Chemical Romance, I’m a freaken emo, then I say I like some of Marilyn Masons songs and automatically I’m a drug induced Satan worshipping freak! The truth of the matter is I am myself, yes I wear black but I wear it with other colours too, it doesn’t mean I’m emo or anything. So is anyone else sick of this? I just wish everything didn’t have to be stereotyped over something stupid like music, I mean I even like classical!
Things to talk about: ~Your experiences of being music typed ~ What music you like. ~ You’re views of people passing judgment for liking a certain band, singer etc ~ Just general music.

I try to never have a problem with people because of the music they listen to. If I don't like the music that people listen to, I still try to get to know them as a person insted of their music genre. People think I'm stupid when I say that I listen to Powermetal just because they've never heard of it before. A kid told me that I sucked when I said that I didn't like Nirvana upon meeting him. It made me very frustrated, so I try to stay way from doing those kinds of things. I find it more respectful, anyhow.

I do get tired of it. Though basically everyone in my school knows I listen to metal and rock and almost anything like it and thats it. Besides techno. Gotta love it. I just hate it when people pretend to be what their not. Thats when I just want to take a butter knife and implant it into their chest cavities.

Well I've gotten used to the sterotype thing. I'm Asian, so people called me crazy. I told them I listened to some dark techno (usually with bell tolling), some "emo" stuff--Shinedown, Good Charlette, Mudvayne, etc, and some more rock stuff, and they called me mental.
Though I am a bit spiritualistically crazy, people now call me an insane Asian who has "mad skills like a tiger" and all that bull.... Then again maybe I am insane... I don't know anymore!

I love it when people stereotype my tastes. They think that I listen to such complex and amazing music, that it is beyond what their humble ears can listen to.
And in all truth, they couldn't be closer to the truth.
Though it gets annoying when people confuse what I listen to. I.E comparing Hardcore with Death Metal.

I am glad to see it is not just me who gets tired of this. I agree with your way of thinking Ioji, a lot of the friends I have, have many different tastes to me in clothing styles, music and such but I got to know them, like they did me and it turned out we all get on well. I think people should spend less time caring about what other people like or listen too and more time just seeing what that person is like instead of classing them and thinking they won't get on stright away.

I hate it when people stereotype Broadway as all being stuff like Annie... there's a lot of different musicals in all different genres. There have been musicals of Dracula and Interview with a Vampire, too.

I like a lot of music, some really random crap, but hardly anyone I know says I'm -insert stereotype here- for liking a certain band/artist.
But I think that's because most of the people I hang out/talk to are pretty open-minded and like the same stuf I do, even if it is Britney Spears or *Nsync.
Either way, I don't really care what people think of my music; I like what I like regardless of their opinion.

Hence why I'm called emo. All of my bands are supposedly emo...but I swear if I hear another person say MCR is emo, I WILL kill them...it's only emo if you aren't popular...stupid preps... Lemme see...how many miscategorized bands... 1. Three Days Grace (wtf?! they aren't emo!) 2. My Chemical romance 3. Fall Out Boy (whoever the hell thinks that FOB is emo needs to go die) and a crapload more.

OMFG YES!
I have the same problem. I love rock music but I do listen to a lot of different types within rock, like Gothic, Metal, Hardcore, Screamo, etc. But people are so damn sterotypical that if you listen to this one band you must be this, I'm sick of it. God forbid if your music isn't heavy enough! I generally hate people who act like god because they listen to Heavy Metal or Hardcore music. They won't even allow you to speak your opinion before they blurt out their opinion of you. And I want to know what is up with this Emo bullshit. Half the bands people label as Emo aren't even Emo but the ones there running around listening to are. In my opinion Emo refers to whinning about MADE-UP problems, not problems in general. Granted if every song on a bands album whins its going in the trash.
Well all of them can take there closed minds & hardcore want-to-be-selfs and kiss my butt!
Don't Judge Me By Your Ignorance.
