Only people who posted in The Wild Hunt can post here!

...You are met by a shoreline and the sea.

Maybe you've been here before? Maybe this is your first time? What does it feel like to be here, under these... bizarre circumstances? How long has it been since you last met with the wolf known as Kale Greenleaf? You're here, so a part of you humored the stranger, but how much of you actually believes in all this?

To the right and left of you is sand and rock, but stretched out endlessly ahead, in the ripple and roil of waves crashing, is the unknown. The great mystery. What were his words again?

“Travel to the West. There you will find the beast which lurks beneath the waves. It is said to be twice as long as the shore itself, with a beak and many limbs but no feathers or fur to speak of. It has not been seen in many years and yet… I believe there are clues of its existence scattered about the shoreline. Find proof and return to me. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain… What do you say?”

    Ah, yes. Proof.

    ------

    How to Play:
Generate a random number between 1 - 4. Find the corresponding item to match your number and then respond by 'finding it'. How and where do you locate it? What are your thoughts on the item? And then, make it clear that you leave the beach in search of Kale once more.

    Rules:
    • Only generate one random number, and then edit your responses into that post.
    • Please do not hint at seeing any of the other objects. What you roll is what you find.
    • You may only participate in this if you replied to the introduction prompt.
    • This response should be at least 500 words.

    Object List:
    1. A small, round, shimmering scale. It is hard to the touch and colored like oil-slicked water.
    2. A two-foot-long piece of bone, with the very tip of it serrated. It looks almost like a porcupine quill and smells of raw fish.
    3. A thick tuft of course hair, still attached to a portion of whatever scalp it once adorned. It’s a beautiful orange/yellow color.
    4. A broken piece of plank which likely floated in upon the waves. Carved into it is the shape of a long and mean looking squid.

The next prompt will be posted: 4/14/2020

The reddish brown female called Dark Skies Bloodmoon has traveled to the west just as Kale Greenleaf had tasked her. She was looking for some sort of proof to bring back to the large berserker and she didn't want to disappoint him. The reddish brown female had no idea what to actually look for but she hoped something would crop up. The female's thoughts had been filled with so many tales and random thoughts as she had traveled down the mountains to the shores. It had felt like forever before she reached her destination but the travel had been nice. No real disturbances or stops, though she had felt like she might have back tracked once or twice. Not that anyone could prove such a thing. As she traveled on the colder air had given way to warmer tidings until her paws hit the sandy shores. It had been breathtaking and Dark Skies Bloodmoon had forgotten what she had come there for.

"Proof." Dark Skies Bloodmoon mused as she padded down the beach, reminding herself of the quest. Surprisingly the red female had never been to the beach and yet she had found herself there. It was strange and the roar of the ocean was startling sometimes. Especially when it crashed upon the shore, even lightly. It was the rocks she was more scared of. Looking out she wondered if anyone had ever ventured out further than this point and across the blue vastness. Dark Skies Bloodmoon couldn't even see the end of the beach as she looked left and then right. Where was she even going to start looking? "This is daunting." A groan escaping her.

Starting to the right the reddish brown female started the trek to search about. All the while sand getting in her paw pads, sticking and sometimes clumping together as the water rushed up to greet her. The smell was strange here, way too salty for her. Definitely not drinking this. Thinking to herself as she continued down the path right. Continuing to walk in almost silence Dark Skies Bloodmoon still hadn't found what she was looking for. For a moment she almost decided to call her search and return to Kale Greenleaf empty handed, to tell him she had failed his quest when she noticed something. Something that was a bright and beautiful orange and yellow color. With some pep in her step, she rushed to the item. The smell was awful and smelt so strange. Not something she had ever run across before. Was this the proof she was seeking? This strange thick tuft of coarse hair? Well she was going to find out either way.

Doing her best to get the hair part and not the scalp, which mind you the whole thing was kind of disgusting. Dark Skies Bloodmoon started her journey back to where she had found Kale Greenleaf. At least she had an excellent memory of locations and how to get back to places. The reddish brown female's paws hadn't failed her yet and they certainly weren't going to now. One step after the other for both her journey and her quest to become a Monster Hunter.

User ImageHel loved to travel. There was always something new to see, to smell, to taste. Wandering the lands never left her bored, but now that she had a task to complete things were somehow even more exciting. Normally Hel would let her paws take her wherever they wanted, meandering and not following a straight path. For this quest she has specific instructions, though, so she kept her nose pointed west. It took a few days of travel - she was keeping true to the direction she was heading but she wasn't particularly fast, she did allow a nice field of flowers to distract her on one occasion - before the salty tang of ocean air reached her nose.

Hel had been to the sea a few times before now but never with the intent to stay. She'd played in the water and even caught a fish once but she didn't care much for how the salt water made her fur feel after going for a swim. Fresh water was far superior in her humble opinion. There was never a lack of things to see and do at the shore, though, and as she reached the start of the sand she took a deep breath and paused, taking it all in.

The sun was fairly high in the sky as Hel padded onto the sands, her paws warmed while she walked. She knew from experience in the summer time the sand could be so hot it was near impossible to walk on so she was thankful for the gentle heat that warmed her rather than seared. As she walked she thought back to her meeting with Kale, her nose twitching and searching for any sign of this great beast he had spoken about. How long had it been since she'd seen him now? Three days? Four? She couldn't remember exactly, but she knew that when she found something to bring back to him her paws would itch to move a little bit faster.

Putting her nose to work, Hel began to sniff around the seaweed that had washed up on shore and the rocky tide pools that were sprinkled here and there. She found a crab that distracted her for a bit and gobbled up some fish that were stuck in one of the pools before really getting down to business. It took her a few hours of searching and she was almost ready to call it off and try again the next day when her nose caught the scent of something different. She swung her head around, eyes locking on something fuzzy. Oh. That wasn't normal.

Trotting over to it, Hel dug into the sand. Whatever it was had been unearthed in the last high tide, the strange orange fur a bit crusty and sandy but definitely not normal for the shore. There was still skin attached to the fur on the underside and Hel considered this a victory. She had no idea what it was which was in her favor, she supposed. She didn't know what this monster looked like so it very well could be fuzzy and golden!

Satisfied with her find, Hel got a better grip on the salty, sandy prize and headed back the way she'd come down the shore, following her paw prints. The tide was just starting to wash her trail away when she reached the spot she'd come down the dunes at, so with a quick turn to gaze at the rolling sea once more, Hel changed her pace to a light run to start back on her way to Kale. Hopefully he'd be as excited as she was about her find!

User ImageWith a new goal in mind he prepared himself for the adventure to the shore line, it had been far to long since he had smelled the Ocean, it was back when he had visited his grandmother that he had first encountered this smell, he had a fondness for it. Upon arrival he began walking down the beach line, he kept in mind what kale had said. just what kind of creature lived within theses waters, what it was like, what did it eat? hopefully not wolves and preferably the fish that lived within the vast dark waters before him.

The wind brushed threw his fur as he began to search threw the damp sand. damp clumps of sand infiltrating his fur between his claws. so far the young wolfs search was fruitless "how doses he expect me to find anything with so much sand and waters, if there was any proof it would of been washed up long ago" he sighed to himself, but in the back of his mind he heard his fathers voice " never give up nightingale, giving up gets you nowhere and definitely wont benefit others." with hat memory he raised his head and continued searching.

Scowling the shore he walked for a while holes scattered across the shore line the sound of water crashing upon rocks and the beach filled his ears.he wanted to stop and enjoy the sea fro what possibly little time he had left with it, knowing eventually he would have to return home once this whole ordeal was over. upon gazing out at the sea he took a moment to ponder this situation, what they where after, was it even real or a hallucination? there where so many plants out there in the world wolves have not yet come to understand them.

It was possible that this wolf could of ingested something to cause such an apparition, but at the same time there was so much of the world that wolves have yet to see,he however was taking helping kale very seriously who knew what kind of adventure this would bring. as he finished taking a moment, before moving on he wondered how his mother was doing and if his new siblings where born, he would be sure to bring a few seashells home for his siblings. he smiled faintly and went back to searching the shore "So much sand" he sighed.

He grew ever more restless but determinant the longer he searched, he had come this far threw his trek threw the sand however his search would soon become a fruitful as he turned back after reaching the end of the beech he saw something peculiar, floating piece of wood floating in on the waves, not to far from his current location he ran over hoping to reach it before the tide could pull it away, he garbed the drift wood in his mouth and dragged it from the waters, taking a moment to analyze the peculiar etching in the wood "what is this?" he asked himself bulling over the strange creature but after looking it over he began to carry it back toward where he had last seen kale.

Item Found: A thick tuft of course hair, still attached to a portion of whatever scalp it once adorned. It’s a beautiful orange/yellow color.

          -------

tab With the so called, possibly self proclaimed, still highly suspicious Monster Hunter Kale’s words rattling around in the forefront of his brain, the dark Dire made his way to the west. He followed the scent of salt hanging heavy in the air and soon the distant sound of water lapping at sand grew. The greenery of woods began to fade, tree trunks became slimmer, leafy boughs became slender branches lined in grass like frills.

tab White Bone’s mouth twisted into a grimace. With no one around, he could be completely honest with himself and say, if only in his head, he did not like big bodies of water. He hated to be near it. Hated the sound and the smell. Hated the soft sand beneath his paws and between his toes. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that he'd nearly been drowned by his father as a pup. But… that couldn't be. His father had only wanted to make him stronger; to make him face his fears and overcome them. In a way, he supposed he had been successful. He sure wasn't afraid of the water any more.

tab Despite his complete and utter disdain for where he was to search, the male took his time. He walked as if he were simply taking a leisurely stroll across the sands, never mind the fact the hour at which he was doing so hardly ever saw many creatures as wide as awake as himself. Most creatures, himself included, would usually be in between the waking and dream worlds at this point in time. Which called to question….

tab Was White Bone entirely sure he wasn't simply dreaming? He had one heck of an imagination, or so he'd been told. Would this not be something he would dream up? Could this be his subconscious warning him of the severity of his actions, both past and future?

tab A growl rumbled through his chest as he shook his head, dispelling his train of thought before it caused him more upset than it was worth. He'd set out a different mission now. There was no time to begin doubting himself about another.

tab He had walked nearly the entire length of the shore before he saw it; the clue, the proof the monster hunter had requested--though perhaps that was too kind a word to use, ‘tasked’ would be more accurate--him to find. Golden eyes zeroed in on the stark contrast of colour between the fur tuft and the sand just as his paws carried him slowly to it. Whatever it was… it had come off something he had surely never seen. The pigments in those colours that seemed to shift from yellow to orange when turned to just the right angle were nearly mesmerizing and the thickness of each strand of fur, or hair, was also unlike anything he'd ever come across. For a while, he simply glared down at the thing as if willing it to speak to him, to tell him something about the creature it had been ripped from.

tab After a while, when nothing profound had happened, he bent and scooped the tuft of fur into his mouth. Grimacing against the texture of the fur against his tongue, not to mention a taste he could barely even describe, he made his way back down the shore. He wasn’t entirely sure why, but he felt compelled to take it back to the berserker and not just because he'd asked. No…

tab The Dire returned to Monster Hunter Kale because he needed to know what this was.

The sun lay low over a vast sea, casting pinks and oranges over the early morning sky. The roar of waves rolling across the shore nearly drowned out all other sound. It gave off a false sense of comfort, being unable to hear the potential dangers of the world. Her trip west had not been without its fair bit of peril. Everything had seemed unfamiliar to her, every sound somehow different, every shadow somehow menacing. Charting her way through new territory was a trial she had been unprepared for. The scent of other packs nearly veered her off track, she was so ready to avoid them. Nothing had attacked her. Despite being young, Lady was a robust young wolf and not so easy a victim to pick on.

It was the first time the young female had been on her own, and though her parents were reluctant to see her go they couldn't actually stop her. The first day alone she had to keep checking back over her shoulder to ensure that they weren't trailing after her. Lady was sure they did not understand her decision, but at the very least they seemed to respect it. Our Lady's Tears hadn't given her family the specifics of where she was off to and why. It was enough to let them know her intent, and that she would eventually be back. Though she would never admit it aloud, she liked the companionship her family offered her.

Looking out over the sea, she exhaled a long breath that she had not even realized she had been holding in. The waters were still dark, but she could understand immediately how a creature so large could lurk in its depths unnoticed. She had been to shorelines before, but nothing compared to how vast the expanse of beach was. The young wolf could not help but spend a little bit too long staring out over the sea. She took in the experience silently and allowed herself to enjoy the peace before getting down to business.

Just because she was an aspiring monster hunter it did not mean that she couldn't stop to smell the roses. The sun had risen quite a bit into the sky by the time Lady shook the sand out of her fur and started on her hunt. Kale's words echoed in the back of her mind, reminding her of what sort of creature slept underneath the waves. She assumed anything... fishy and obnoxiously large would be enough proof to convince even the most skeptical of wolves. A giant scale would be an amazing find! Or perhaps a really long eyelash? Lady wasn't sure if a gigantic sea beast had eyelashes or not, but she couldn't rule out the possibilities.

She combed through the shoreline, her gaze intent on the tan sand. After the first few seashells (that she was very excited to discover) she got a feel for what would actually stand out as 'odd'. Minutes turned into hours, and it was growing to be very late in the day when something caught her attention out of the corner of her eye. Mostly buried by sand, she saw the white sheen of bone. It was enough to warrant an investigation. As she dug through the sand to uncover her prize, curiosity turned into hope and then turned into excitement.

"OH MY SPIRITS," she screeched into the wind. She grabbed the bone with her teeth and dragged it out of its sandy grave. The object was nearly two feet in length with peculiar serrations at the tip that were unlike anything she had seen on any other creature - especially not at this size. "I can't believe I did it! YES!" Thankfully, no one was around to hear her gleeful cheers.

Adjusting the bone between her teeth, Our Lady's Tears trotted off the beach with her stubby tail held high in the air. Unfortunately, she hadn't considered just how much of an inconvenience it would be to bring back such irrefutable evidence. It was not until she was off the beach that she realized just how exhausting her return to Kale would be. "Aw, f-"

Wild Holly had never been to the shore before looking out across the water she felt small and a little unnerved by the dark water she wondered what was in it, certainly not wolves, least she didn't think wolves would be able to live in water like that. It didn't smell good so she decided it was unsafe to drink. She shook her head and attempted to focus on what she was doing and get down to the task at hand. She had traveled for over a week to get to this shoreline, going as fast as she could to find this shoreline thing that Kale Greenleaf had spoken of. She took him as literally as she could and went straight west till she found the water that was too big to be real.

Wild Holly believed Kale she wanted to see the Kracken and she wanted to see much more than that, she wanted to see what lay beyond the veil and explore the land of myths and legends. She really wasn't sure what drove her to seek strange things and adventure but it was just a part of who she was or perhaps her need to figure out if there was a reason her brother had disappeared and never returned. She didn't believe he was dead nor did she believe he had left her for no reason, they had been so close and she knew he would never have left her without telling her. She felt like she would have known if he had died. So to her, that meant he was still out there somewhere.

She looked at the rocks and the shore and thought over what Kale had said, ok it was time to get down there and start looking for clues, she took a deep breath the large water still making her nervous. After all, Kale did say something lurked under all that water and it was certain to be bigger than any wolf. She needed to find something and return to Kale as quickly as she could. Wild finally spotted something partly buried in the sand. She went over to the piece of wood and grabbed one end in her laws and pulled it from the sand. She pulled it loose and dropped it to the ground. She frowned looking at the weird creature carved into the wood. It was unlike anything she had ever seen before. What in their world could it be? This had to be what Kale wanted, carrying this back would most likely slow her down a bit but she had to. She was determined to finish this quest and learn more about the veil and the strange creatures she believed were coming from it, perhaps that was where her brother had gone? She nodded firmly and once again picked up the wood and took off back towards Kale Greenleaf.

She had to take more breaks and by the time she got back to Kale her jar hurt badly from traveling so long carrying something in her mouth, she really needed to have a raccoon fashion her a bag. She was out of breath when she arrived and presented Kale with the carved wood piece.

Shapeless ran forward, very methodically and quiet for even a big beserker like himself. He had to teach himself how to be quiet, but agile with a bigger frame, but it was something that he mastered fast. Making his way towards this shore, he suddenly felt like maybe this was just a goose chase, and he was on the receiving end of a scam. Stopping abruptly, he turned to face the direction he came, growling lowly. He was not one to talk to himself, but his actions came across clear. If this happened to be a scam, he would make sure this Kale would understand what troubles he had gotten into.

Turning around, he stumbled upon the rocky shoreline and gazed upon the coast. He could only imagine a beast twice as big as this and what it might appear like. It had only been a day passing since he spoke to Kale, Shapeless had made great timing to the coast.

Lifting his snout, he smelled the breeze of the water, and let the sand blow against his unwavering body. He had been to the coast before in his ventures but he did not know what drew others here. It was nice, but it was just a vastly open space. Shapeless could easily find victims here but they would be able to spot him from quite a distance. He rather liked the mountains or the brush of the forest, that even with his bigger than average body, he could stay quite hidden for an ambush.

With his mind remembering what exactly Kale had said, he stepped down on the coast and let his eyes shift from side to side, looking for anything that could possibly be great proof to take back to Kale. Shapeless also scanned the horizon of the water for any creatures to break the surface and make their presence known. Maybe he could break Kale make the creature, although if the rumors were true, he would have quite some difficulty getting it back to Kale.

With a low chuckle at the thought of Shapeless taking on such an extraordinary creature, his nose was abruptly filled with the stench of raw fish. With a shake of his muzzle, he started to look around for the origin of the smell. The beach was covered in many smells, dead fish, seaweed, and other wolves, but this smell was something he even could not pinpoint.

As some time passed, Shapeless stretched forward, letting his nose guide him off the coastline. That's where his eyes landed on something sticking out of the sand and covered in weeds from the sea. With a pondering thought, Shapeless started to scratch away the seaweed and used his neck and front paws to bring this object to the surface. While it was a struggle, he finally freed the object from his sandy grave and looked upon the specimen. With a scoff, his soulless eyes gazed upon a bone that he figured to be around two feet or so. It had a weird, jagged edge to it and the smell that filled his nose earlier, now fully engulfed him.

It was strange for Shapeless to find something like this, on the shorelines that Kale had sent him to scavenge. With a quick glance, he looked up again at the horizon and decided this was something of importance to bring to Kale.

"He should be happy, and if not..."

Shapeless chuckled at the thought of the wolf turning this piece of evidence down. Before checking on his surroundings one last time, he scooped up the bone in his jaws and started his way back towards Kale. The journey might take him longer to get back due to the bone, but he would ensure he would get it back in one piece.

Midnight usually grumpy was excited to take on this quest with an urge to finally chase prey that was worthy. He prepared himself a few days before he set out pondering what it was like to stand along the beach and listen to the resonance of the waves. In between this journey he rested dreaming of huge creatures- Colossal Beasts. Each dream that fulfilled his desires led him closer to his goal heading to the West. After a enticing hunt of a spray prey his tongued licked a muzzle stained with the strong taste of oxidized blood.

He was almost there.

Midnight Frost stood looking out over the vast ocean that carried a picturesque view of a painted fantasy. As the cerulean sky awoke from its slumber so did the sun which seemed to rise toward the heavens. Pastoral pinks and orange hues dancing in a sea of clouds that glistened in golden hues. The air itself was salty as he could taste it on his tongue without actually drinking the water was mesmerizing.

In one word he could of described this new encounter as "breathtaking.

Taking a cue from a seabird that announced his arrival he let his paws sink downward in the sand caving inward around his feet. It was a strange sensation feeling like you were being timidly pulled inward with the tiny grains creating a vast ocean of sand. He couldn't help but be a little playful walking quickly through this amazing dream. Having never been here before his strong legs carried him up to the ocean itself as it rocked gently, pulling itself inward and outward. The water itself he found was extremely salty with a foaming lip leaving his experience with a never ending fishy taste against his tongue. Clearly noted he would find fresher water after he came what he was looking for.

Then he started pondering what Kale had spoke of... “We have always lived in the shadows of colossal beasts. Always.”

Midnight pondered walking normally through the sand noting jutting rocks like spires around him. This beach was riddled with mysteries which he had chosen to follow in the words of a strange Berserker. He wondered stopping idly to look out over the crashing waves what truly was lurking out in the vastness of darkness slowly glistening from the sunlight. This Colossal Beast definitely had plenty of room to roam that was for sure.

Now, the younger wolf known as Midnight Frost was seeking out a clue to return to Kale in proof he had believed and acted on a request. Casually still on high alert he started his exploration nosing about the sand working further down the shoreline riddled with creatures now hardened into dead shells washing up along the beach. Heading further down his nose caught the scent of something rotten, extremely fishy even. Quickly, Midnight headed over to this precarious scent leading him to something jutting up from the deep sand. At first he couldn't figure out what this mystery item was so digging vicariously his paws worked along with teeth to pull this strange thing out of the sand. As he tugged harder the item finally was relieved of the sand. Lying it on the ground before him, Midnight noted it was a serrated bone of some creature reaching two feet in length. Walking around this amazing find Midnight deduced that this was a clue with a definite scent of raw fish. Pausing after another cry of a bird native to the area, Midnight decided this find was perfect for Kale.

Finding the center he picked this massive bone up in his muzzle making his way back up the beach. It would be a couple days travel to reach Bluestone again so he'd have to be exceptionally careful of any other predators trying to steal his prize. Fair enough he carried jaws of his own teeth and a will to survive. As his paws left the sand leaving the ocean behind him Midnight still pondered what was living out out in those depths proving Kale wasn't a crazy Beserker wolf after all. Heading back to Bluestone he was determined to find Kale announcing his find.

Maybe monsters are real....

Many moons passed as Sparrow made his journey West. Over hills, through forests; come rain or come shine. Nothing would stop him in his quest. It was probably wrong of him to leave without so much as a word to Keen Eye though. But Sparrow’s Song was caught up now in a thrilling adventure. He’d never felt quite like this before. The more he walked, and thought about all the stories he heard from Kale, the more he felt himself coming to believe the tales as well. He pondered as he tread along, what could this giant beast look like? It’s description by Kale was very strange. The images that Sparrow conjured up in his mind were fantastical to say the least. And that just made the young dire even more excited.

The sun was now high in the sky, and beat down on Sparrow’s back. The weather was getting warmer and the more the wolf walked, he found himself panting to keep cool. It wouldn’t be much longer now. It had to be close. As he neared his destination the trees began to clear out, and the ground was much flatter. He could smell the salty air. The breeze ruffled his fluffy coat, as he stepped out onto the scene.

He. Was. Finally. There!

The waves lapped at the shore, and Sparrow could feel the sand squish under his paws. There were clumps of green seaweed scattered on the beach. And birds cried out overhead as the dove into the water looking for fish. It was a sight to behold. Sparrow had not traveled this much in such a short time before. And never before had he seen a beach. He plopped down and just stared at his surroundings for quite a long time; taking it all in. He took a deep breath and sighed happily, his tail wagging. This place was wonderful! He shook his head though, snapping back to attention. The whole reason he was here, how could he forget?!

“So….I’m looking for clues,” he reminded himself. “But what sort of things qualify as a clue anyway?” he questioned aloud. He combed the beach, and scanned the nearby water, wondering if waves would bring something in from the sea. As he moved along though he kept getting distracted by the various wildlife. A tiny hermit crab stuck its legs out of its shell and began skittering across the ground at Sparrow’s feet. Immediately he was chasing after it, until it stopped and buried itself in the sands again. Sparrow stuck his nose in after it, snorting as his nostrils filled with sand. And so he began to dig, wondering just where this wondrous creature had gone.

But instead of unearthing the crab, something else caught Sparrow’s attention. It sparkled in the light. And it was small and hard to the touch. The colors were dark black with blues and greens; very iridescent and beautiful. It was a scale! Judging by the looks of it, it had to be special! He just knew it! If he brought this back to Kale, surely the Monster Hunter would be proud of him! And so he picked it up, and began the trek back to see Greenleaf.

Bloodlust ran in that lazy lope that eats the miles without expending too much energy in the process. He had plenty of time to accomplish what had been set out for him, and while a part of him was in a hurry (some part of his soul maybe?) he knew where he was headed was more than likely quite a distance away. Did he really know the land in this area? As he traveled, he looked for flickers of memory perhaps spurred by his past wanderings, but little to nothing jogged his memory. In a way, this sort of fed into his hunger further, and deep inside the question began to sing out of maybe this was a time of rebirth, a time to find out just what kind of wolf he truly was. If someone had ever asked that of him, it would of shocked him to realize how little he truly knew himself. This subconscious longing for discovery, not only of the multi-limbed beaked monster that may or may not exist, but of finding out just what kind of stuff he was truly made of, spurned his paws into longer and longer strides.

As the days passed, he slept very little and felt little need to eat beyond what happened to cross his path along the way. He kept his nose relentlessly turned towards the west, but it wasn’t until he noticed a salty tang in the air, and the shift of the earth beneath his feet as dirt began to give way to sand, that made him aware of the roar that had been constantly building in the air around him. It pulsed rhythmically, ever present, filling not just his head but his whole being. Having never seen the ocean before, he was awestruck as he mounted a dune of sand that had felt as a barrier between two worlds – and in a sense, it really had been.

He stood there for time unending (probably a few seconds….maybe minutes…who knew?), just taking it all in as the wind off the water caressed his being, winding into his fur, and somehow into his soul causing him to close his eyes and just let it sink in. The rhythm of the waves could not be ignored for long though, nor could the various objects littered about the sand. At that moment, he heard the Old One’s voice cut through it all – it reminded him of why he had come: to seek proof. Proof of this legendary monster with many limbs and a beak and was extremely big. Well, extremely big things should leave extremely big proof, right?

He wandered the shoreline up and down, but after many false starts, realizing that there were many seashells, and strands of plants drying in the sun leading to strong odors were probably not what the Old One had been meaning as “proof”. He needed something….unusual. Different. Something that was unique, and so far NONE of this had been unique at all. Yeah, maybe each shell COULD be considered unique in the sense of each had quirks and differences in pattern, but nothing that really stood out. Certainly nothing the Old One wouldn’t just laught at him for.

Frustrated, he sat down with a huff. Looking towards the setting sun, the evening closing on his third day of fruitless searching, He couldn’t help but wonder for the first time if he’d been a fool. Maybe the old berserker had cracked, eaten one too many mushrooms or rotten nuts or something. Many thoughts like this passed over his mind as he looked out at the water, lost in its thrall. It took several moments before he realized that what had truly drawn his eye was something unusual. Something…was moving in the waves. Keeping his eyes glued to the spot, he slowly got up and approached it as if in a dream. It was some sort of flat piece of wood (a plank? Was that a thing?) with something scratched on it. Catching it I his teeth as the waves pushed it towards him, he carefully caught hold and brought it farther up the bank to the top of the dune separating this world from the inner island. Laying it down carefully, he studied it for a long time. What was on it was something that looked like it MIGHT be a fish but had so many limbs, and like it was hungry for lunch. The Old One’s voice floated into his memories once more, and with a smile that creased his muzzle, he realized he’d found “proof” after all. It certainly seemed to be what he’d been looking for, it was truly unique. Bounding to his feet, he was careful to get a good grip on the wood away from the scratched area (he was afraid his teeth marks would mar the etching and thus ruin it forever) and turned back inland to find the Monster Hunter…the Old One.

This time, no easy lope would do. It was time to run.

Piranha's roll, will edit in asap <3

. A broken piece of plank which likely floated in upon the waves. Carved into it is the shape of a long and mean looking squid.

Piranha snorted as his paws met sand and sea. He merely lifted a paw and gave it a small shake, not phased by water in the slightest. Being part of a family of wolves who, contrary to how most addressed themselves as being part of the "Fish Line", didn't really act like one huge close knit family. Still, they all haunted the same waters, all grew up learning to fish so the aptly named wolf didn't exactly find himself uncomfortable.

Bizarre?

Still very much so. To think he had agreed to go hunting for some sort of sign of some sort of creature for some sort of massive wolf that could gobble him up and use his bones as tooth picks. The thought made Piranha laugh out loud and he listened to it crash against the waves and echo out onto the rest of the shore that stretched on. His narrowed green gaze scanned both water and land. He was still supposed to look for something, might as well look. How long had it been since he had met that wolf actually? A day? Two? He'd lost track. If it wasn't worth keeping in his memory banks than Piranha simply didn't.

Still, he had to admit to himself he found the sun's rays warming against his fur and oddly at ease, or at least more than he had been in quite a while. A wonder what simple things did for someone who found themselves plagued by troubled sleep. Maybe he needed to get out more often and go on silly hunts? Piranha laughed again. "Yeaaaaah right. Wild goose chases are about as fun as one can throw one." he groaned indigenous to himself. "They'd miss me back home anyways." he told himself, grinning. Would they really was another thought for another time.

He had almost forgot his reason for being here when something odd caught his attention. Nosing his way over to a strange lump in the sand, he paused to study it. Dried up seaweed had been washed ashore then stuck to something that had now been buried in the sands after countless high tides carried sea and sand over top of it. Tilting his head, Piranha got to work, digging quickly with his front paws to uncover it, grabbing the leafy greens and tossing em aside. A few seashells went skittering out of his way and perhaps a few unfortunate tiny land and sea creatures went flying back into the sea....whether they wanted it or not. When he was finally done, Piranha found himself nose to plan with a ....well plank.

Looking slightly waterlogged, he guessed it had been carried in from the sea and now called this particular spot home. Using his nose he thrust it out into the open, clearing off anymore debris and turned it over gently. Into its structure was carved a figure in the shape of a squid. Careful detail was taken to make sure it was long, mean and foreboding. With his head now tilted in the other direction, Piranha almost found himself wondering if he were staring at some sort of image of a family member. Another chuckle escaped him, though curt and rough. There had yet to be anyone in his family named Squid. Yet. Still, was this the proof he was looking for? Could be. Kale did mention it was a creature with many arms but no fur or feathers and well, squids had many arms and neither fur nor feathers.

Snorting, he picked up the plank, delicately, which was unusual for the grumpy dire wolf. Now....where was he going to find Kale to bring this back to him? "You better be easy to find..." he gruffed around the plank, nose briefly in the air to try and catch any sort of whiff of where he might find the berserker before setting off back the way he came, leaving the beach behind.

It felts like many moons since Blurred Vision encountered the wolf Kale Greenleaf, when he was given a mountain of a mission. He was to find a beast that exists beneath the darkness, of no feather nor fur, and with many, many limbs. It sounded fantastical, but a part of Blurred Vision really, truly bought into the fantasy. Something was out there. As his eyes set their sight on the shoreline - long and daunting - he became even more sure of himself. Before he could allow himself to settle down with a pack to call home, his heart had called him on one last adventure. And he was determined to see it through to its end.

If he recalled correctly, Kale mentioned that this beast he sought was twice as long as the shoreline itself. Blurred Vision halted in his tracks, flexing his claws into the sand on which he stood. He eyed up the horizon, and shook his head to himself. Could this beast really be? Is it truly possible?

Well, there was only one way to find out. And that way aligned perfectly with what Kale had sent him here to do: gather evidence. His eyes scanned the area around him before he put his nose to the ground and drank in the scent of the sea. Blurred Vision had never been huge on fish, and their smell was quite pungent, so he found himself wrinkling his nose in response. All business, he put his nose to the ground and started wandering amongst the sand and stone, aiming to find something, anything of note.

There were seashells everywhere he looked - mostly broken, shattered by the tossing of the great waves. None of these gave him any kind of... feeling. No intrinsic tugging in the pit of his stomach, telling him that he had found that something he so eagerly sought. Then, his eyes caught sight of something stuck in the sand. Quickly, he padded over. There was a large rock stuck in the sand, within the reach of the water's tendrils. Soft, wet sand sucked at the edges of the rock, but the stone did not budge. Behind it, sheltered from the waves, was a bone. It was long. Blurred Vision squinted, trying to think of what sea creature would have a bone such as this, but the only answer was that it belonged to the great beast.

Staring at the bone, he pushed it with his nose. It budged, but it was pretty firm in its place with the rock. Gingerly, Blurred Vision took the bone in his teeth, pulling it free from the sand with a sucking sound, and padded away from the water. Once out of the reach of the sea, he dropped the bone. The tip of it was curious - serrated, all naturally jagged - and it was even longer than he had initially noticed. It smelled strongly of that putrid smell of raw fish.

Everything was telling Blurred Vision that this was the evidence he sought. He wanted to smile to himself, but in truth, he was feeling a bit apprehensive. He hadn't expected to find evidence of this beast so easily, albeit at all. But here it was: proof of the creature's existence. Thus, his journey was only just beginning.

Taking the bone in his mouth, Vision started off the way he came. In another few days' time, he would be back with Kale Greenleaf, plotting next steps for this great adventure.
